That case probably (certainly) doesn't have clearance for a NH-D14 since it has a side fan and isn't your typical 8" to 9" wide case. Also has molex fans, no routing holes, shit HDD cage, and so on. Getting a shitty case sort of defeats the purpose of getting a modular power supply? Capstone is fine. If you want to do SLI/Crossfire than the Seasonic Platinum 760 is on sale right now for $140. Thanks a bunch for your feedback. The case is that one because this build is a for a friend, and he likes green/brown/white, and green has limited choices. If I don't find a wide case, the U14S would work for most cases, correct? are there any cheaper PSUs for multiGPU? I was thinking of switching to non-modular PSU. Can I get two graphics cards for around $300 that would perform better than the GTX 680? M12II 750 is on sale for $80 ($60 after mail in rebate). And of course there's always Rosewill Capstone or Seasonic G for around $100-$120. NH-U14S is actually taller than the NH-D14 so if the D14 doesn't fit than the U14S won't either.
would i need a 750W for just a single GTX 680?
would a capstone 450W work? I hear you want to be at around 50% of maximum wattage capacity. (i understand nominal wattage means nothing, but there is a difference between 750 and 450 when comparing quality PSUs right?)

No you don't need 750w for a single GTX 680 and yes the Capstone 450 would work. There's a difference in wattage and price, not sure what other differences you had in mind.

I plan on building my gaming pc here pretty soon and I was wondering if I should buy some different fans for the tower(Fractal Design Arc Midi R2.)?
|
Fits in both, I think you need to remove one side fan on the lower one. e. I'm not even sure if there is a fan there by default.

500W (80+) is more than enough for any single-gpu combo. I always freak out when i see these builds with 750W+ PSUs.

That's what I thought too but I wasn't sure. Thanks for the help skyR!

Hi Hi Rome Total War 2 reminded me that it might be about time to upgrade my PC/video card.
What is your current build? I'm running i7-920, 6gb of RAM (3x2gb), and have a GTX 295. (+1000w psu, LGA-1366 mobo [GA-EX58-UD5])
What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920-1080
Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade?
Increase performance in games (RTW at ultra settings runs at 10-15 fps, would like to get 35-50 at least)
What is your budget?
up to $1000, but as little as possible, I'm assuming I won't have to buy that many parts.
What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA
If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify.
Amazon/newegg
I'm guessing that my best bet is to upgrade the video card for now (plz lemme know if I'm wrong). Should I buy a second 295 (prolly used on ebay), or should I just go with a brand new card? How much difference could either make? I'm prepared to spend a lot for a video card if it will lead to significant improvement and will be future-proof. Did same with gtx295 four years ago, seems to have been worth it. Also would getting 2x 4gb ram increase performance enough to justify the purchase? Thanks in advance

You need a strong CPU and GPU for Rome 2.
The game at this time doesn't have SLI support and quad-SLI support in general is crap so a second GTX 295 is a very bad idea unless it's free.

Thanks for the reply, so i7-920 isn't enough (Quad core at 2.67ghz)? Ok no 2nd 295, and I guess even single 295 isn't working at full capacity since it's basically 2 cards in SLI in 1. Would upgrading to a better videocard alone provide a significant performance increase in Rome 2 and other games? Or is my entire system outdated, without a particular bottleneck?
|
Like Starcraft II, Rome 2 is CPU dependent. Upgrading the video card will provide a performance increase but you'd still drop to 10 FPS in the later stages of the game.

i was thinking if 450W would be too close to the maximum, and if a higher wattage would result in the system using wattage closer to 50% (or whatever the optimum percentage is) of the maximum wattage

Hey, wondering if I'll be able to support a second 21 inch monitor.
Currently running and i5 2400 and GTX 460 on a 430 watt PSU. I'm wondering if 430 watts will be enough.

An i7 and GTX 680 is like 300w under load, a 450w is fine. If you are doing some more heavy overclocks and stressing both the CPU and GPU regularly than I guess a 550w would be more suited.

Yes, a GTX 460 can support two monitors. The power supply doesn't provide power to monitors so that's irrelevant.

This isnt really a an upgrade as such , just a general question. When looking to buy a fan cooler what should one look for? The theoretical heat dissipation it says? or whatever fits in the case you are looking to buy?

The theoretical heat dissipation it says?
I have no idea how this is actually measured. Heat plates? Either way it's irrelevant, because a hyper 212 could for example hold an fx-8350 pulling over 200 watts at 55c while a 4770k pulling 100 would go to 100c with it. You can't judge on such a value
You should be asking on forums etc for price vs performance and absolute performance, i would say look at reviews but very many reviews are really quite bad, especially from Tomshardware and Anandtech.
Just ask what you want to cool, say what you're looking to spend or ask what you should spend, people will help you out on sites like this or www.overclock.net

I see, was hoping i7-920 was enough but after playing some more Rome i guess it isn't. Takes like a minute for each turn to end when Comp makes it's moves for example.
I can't afford to upgrade everything at once so decided to do it in parts. What would make sense to upgrade first? Motherobard + cpu from i7920 to i7 4770k (or i5) and Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H or GPU from gtx 295 to gtx 770 (780 for more future proof)?
Also a bigger question is, how much can I reasonably ask for my current system? i7-920 quadcore 2.67ghz, gtx-295, 6gb ram, 1tb hd, dvd-rw, 1000w psu that is 4 years old. Have a friend that needs a comp so if I can sell it to him I can build a full brand new comp, but I really have no idea what would be a fair price
