Probably because HDMI cables are expensive as fuck? They're the only cable I can think of that I have zero spares laying around, out of cables I've had a use for in the last 5 years.

Hmm I guess some of the new mobos actually have display port sockets in them. Would a display port -> dvi adapter do the trick? (I'm assuming those exist never actually looked for one).

Keep in mind if you are going dual-link DVI <-> DisplayPort, a lot of them are buggy and may even refuse to deal with high bandwidth content like 2560x1440. Monitor, video card, and hardware implementations of DisplayPort have been piss poor. Since my HD5850 has a poor implementation of DisplayPort, I have to use an Altona AT-DP200 to run my Apple Cinema Display - that's a $150 active adapter.

You want to push a 2560x1440 monitor right?
If that is the case, DisplayPort and dual-link DVI are the only two connections that can push that resolution. HDMI and single-link DVI don't have enough bandwidth to do so. HDMI is really, really shitty by the way.
If you want to use DisplayPort on your motherboard, you need an active DisplayPort <-> dual-link DVI adapter. Passive adapters will not work here. The cheapest active adapter is probably found at Monoprice and they are $70 minimum over there. A low end GPU with a dual-link DVI port is likely cheaper than that, will definitely work, and probably has better drivers than the joke Intel calls software.
So if possible, just get a GPU. If this is a mITX system and you need that PCIe slot for a tuner card or something, then fair enough try the adapter and hope it works.

Seriously, buy a cheapass passive PCIe powered GPU to push the resolution if possible. It'll actually probably end up being cheaper than a dual-link DVI <-> DisplayPort adapter, which requires an expensive active adapter anyway. And it'll definitely work unlike the DisplayPort adapter.

won't work? I think we may be talking about the opposite directions here. DisplayPort -> DVI should be much easier than DVI -> DisplayPort. From reading the specifications of DisplayPort, it seems that it is a superset of DVI. Should be backwards compatible in that direction. I'm talking about taking a DisplayPort signal from the computer and using an adapter to turn it into DVI on the monitor end. Are you talking about the other way around?
If that doesn't work, it's only $8, w/e.
I can definitely see where the other direction (DVI -> DisplayPort) would be sketchy as fuck.
And if nothing works, I'll likely just accelerate my purchase of a real video card. Not terribly interested in a >$10 interim solution.

my computer acts weirder and weirder the long i leave it but i cant tell y. if i happen to have my computer on for days and days(yes i know its not good for the computer but sometimes i just get lazy and dont feel like turning it off) lots of stuff like lag, sporadic download speed, chrome and origin randomly crashing or plug-ins crashing happens frequently until i reset the computer and then everything seems to go back to normal.any thoughts on whats happening?

The short version: he knows he should reboot more often, but he doesn't, and wants to know a way to get all the benefits of a reboot without rebooting.
And he didn't give us any info regarding his PC or OS. I'm guessing Vista or XP on a PC that was mid-range 4ish years ago.
I don't even want to know how long it's been since his car had an oil change.
