Does anyone have any experience in replacing laptop screens when they cannot find what exactly is holding it on? Look up the service manual for that particular model to see what is involved.
Often these constructions are more like tabs or other frustrating locking mechanisms rather than screws.

the fan on my 212 evo died.
Should I be worried with no fan on my cpu for the time being? I have an i3 ivy bridge and don't overclock. The heatsink was hot, but i could keep my hand on it without discomfort. It has been running for some number of hours now with no fan (didn't notice it was out).
Suggestions on a cheap replacement? The 120mm fans on newegg are $10 for a brand I have heard of. Not sure if I can go with a no-name brand or if there is a better place to look.

The cheapest PWM controlled fans with variable speeds and 4-pin connector all seem to be $10 on newegg.com. That orange Cougar fan should be good, probably cheap because no one wants that color (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835553002). The Arctic F12 PWM is usually a safe choice when searching for something cheap, should be quiet.
If you want to use a fan with fixed RPM and 3-pin connector, you should check if your motherboard can be set to use voltage instead of PWM to control the CPU fan. A setting like this is somewhere in the BIOS, usually on the page where you see temperatures and fan speeds. If you find out that you can control 3-pin fans, you can save a little if you want, buy a $6 fan.
You could move the rear fan of the case onto your Hyper 212 Evo as an alternative to buying a new fan. Temperatures in the case might still be fine after doing that.
Running without fan should work when being mostly idle on the desktop if the case fans keep the case temperature down. You should get a monitoring program for the various sensors in your PC, then look at the CPU package temperature. The program HWINFO can open a tiny history graph window if you double-click something in its sensor window so you can track changes.
+ Show Spoiler +About using the cooler semi-passive ("semi" because there's the case fans), that might just work for everything, not just on the desktop. It does for me in normal use like most games, which I found that out when I made a mistake and disabled the fan for a week. This is with a very different and larger cooler, but my CPU is an i5 and overclocked and it still kind of works.
The semi-passive cooling slowly fails when doing something stressful for the CPU like video encoding. The temperature slowly creeps up without ever stopping. I tried this once for about twenty minutes before I freaked out and stopped the experiment. I assume the cooler slowly gets hotter and the air from the case fans doesn't really manage to move that heat away, just delay the failure. After re-enabling the CPU fan, the temperatures dropped, and the drop slowly continued for several minutes, so it really seems like there's something going on about the cooler itself saving heat.

Hello everyone. I have dilemma that I was wondering if people could help me out with. Are you all familiar with .srt files? They're subtitle files for videos (shows, movies, etc. etc.) My retarded friend, clicked on my .srt file, clicked open with, and clicked utorrent. Now all my .srt files open up as utorrents instead of the actual files that they originally arrived in. I have no idea how to revert this back to its original state. Can anyone help?

Right-click on one of the files to open its context-menu. A few lines from the top, there's a sub-menu "Open with", and that sub-menu has a "Choose default program..." entry at the end.
|
Right click on a file, select "open with..." and untick the "always open this file type using selected program" - may not sound exactly the same, I don't have an english version of Windows on me, but it should be close enough to figure out. At last in Win 7, but should be similiar in others too.
Edit: ninja'd :<

He means something like notepad or whatever you usually use for text files (wordpad, notepad++, vim, emacs, whatever).
edit: every installation should have at least notepad and wordpad

Yeah just set it to use Notepad
If you need to manually find notepad.exe, it's in C:\Windows

Hmmm... I already tried it "open with" NotePad. It doesn't work. The subtitles don't show up :/

Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program > .srt then set it to whatever you had it set to originally.
SRTs, as mentioned, are clear text files. If nothing shows up in notepad then there's nothing in the file.
Normal usage of SRTs does not involve opening them through windows explorer. Play your video, then through the video load the subtitle file as appropriate to the player. You may be able to drag and drop onto the player. It's possible you had SRTs defaulted to the media player you use, which had the effect of loading it into the player.

Just to be sure, what's the file size of the .srt? If it's not 0, text encoding issue maybe? Try opening with something else.

Incorrect text encoding should still show content, just with "random" characters. The equivalent of saying "X is ╕" rather than "X is X"

Hi there,
I have a good offer for a Panasonic Tx 42Gw10 and I wonder if it is possible to watch SC streams without having any problems like burning-in the minimap etc.
I habe not found specific informations for Plasmas which are SC (stream) related and I hope it is the right place to ask here.
Beste wishes!

The equivalent of saying "X is ╕" rather than "X is X" That's what I thought, but IIRC I've seen something give up and not load anything, but that probably wasn't notepad. edit: and on second thought, probably because of the filename and not the contents

I tried searching this but I can't find answers. My tower is perfectly fine playing sc2 in ultra with no lag at all and I can also stream it in 720p with a little lag. I'm planing to get a labtop and a elgato capture card to capture my gameplay from my tower (the 2 computer setup). However I'm not trying to get a really good laptop. What are requirements for the laptop to stream 1080p? will a 3120u cpu cut it? The laptop itself wont be used for anything besides watching movies and streaming my computer.
Edit: I was planning on getting this for the streaming computer. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231074R. Will that cut it for 1080p?

That's an ivy bridge dual core, low tdp processor (power limited to something like 18 watts between cpu and igpu before turbo turns off), guaranteed for only 1.8ghz clock speed, it's a very weak CPU compared to etc a 4670k, or even a desktop dual core, would definitely aim higher
I don't have actual performance numbers for working with capture cards etc, but my impression is that if you have sufficient CPU power available on the primary desktop.. they don't help at all, so i find it very hard to reccomend a $500+ laptop and like a $100 capture card for something that might not actually do anything at all.
