Due to the large amounts of useless threads posted about this subject, this thread will serve as some basic troubleshooting steps as well as outlining the minimum amount of effort you will be required to put in when posting about a streaming issue.

Can you stream?
You need a good computer and good Internet to stream. If you've tried streaming and it just lags your game or has terrible choppy video, chances are your PC isn't good enough or you went way overboard on the quality options.

You will want at least a quad core PC and at least 1mbps upload speed (use www.speedtest.net to California for an accurate assessment of your upload speed) that has no packet loss and low jitter (use www.pingtest.net to measure your packetloss and jitter). Modern Intel CPUs such as the i5/i7 are a lot more efficient than AMD offerings.

If you think your PC is good enough but you are still experiencing issues, read my stream quality guide for an idea of the settings you can adjust to try and fix things.

PC not good enough? Look at the Computer Build Resource Thread for upgrade options.

How To Stream
If you're completely new to streaming and want to know how to stream, by far the easiest way to get started is by using XSplit. XSplit captures your desktop and streams it to either JTV, Ustream, Livestream or a number of other services. It has a good number of options for controlling quality amongst other things.

Here's a guide to getting started with XSplit:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=195391

The more complicated option is to use Adobe's Flash Media Live Encoder with screen capture software such as VHScrCap or SCFH. ROOT's destiny wrote a guide to using FMLE with VHScrCap which you can find at http://root-destiny.com/newbies-guide-to-streaming

Having Problems?
If you are having issues that you absolutely can't solve yourself (after reading my stream quality guide and adjusting all relevant options), if you want to post a thread ensure you've at least done the following first:

  • Ensure your upload speed is fast enough to support streaming (1mbps+)

  • Ensure your CPU is fast enough to support streaming (quad core)

  • Updated to the latest Tier3 version of XSplit (instructions) if applicable.

  • Reduced resolution and bitrate to low levels to verify it's not a CPU or Internet issue.

  • Searched TL using "Content Search" for error messages you may be receiving. Is XSplit telling you "Unable to synchronize settings with server"? Then search for it first!

If you still want to post a thread, include at very least the following information, or your thread will be closed:

  • Streaming software used (Xsplit? FMLE? VAC? SCFH? VhScrCap?)

  • CPU type/speed and amount of RAM (eg: Core i5 2500k 3.3 GHz, 4GB RAM). Not sure? Use CPUz.

  • Windows version (eg: Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit)

  • Download / upload speed as measured by www.speedtest.net to California, USA (eg 15000 down / 5250 up kbps) and ping, packet loss and jitter as measured by www.pingtest.net to California, USA. Connection type - wired / wireless?

  • Settings used in all your streaming software (take a screenshot if you're lazy - you can upload screenshots directly to TL using the 'upload image' link when making a post).

Make sure at very minimum the following information is available / visible: Resolution, bitrate, frame rate (fps), quality options.

Make note NOT to show your stream ID / key, as this is private data that lets anyone stream to your channel.

  • Streaming service used (eg: Justin.TV, UStream, own3d, etc)

  • If posting about video issues or something visible, a link to a recording / VOD of the problem exhibiting itself. Almost all streaming services auto-record VODs, so link to the VOD where you had problems.

Obviously not all these will apply to all types of questions - there's no point testing your Internet speed if you can't even install your streaming program for example. But please include as much detail as possible. No one can help you if you didn't provide the necessary information.

Ensure your CPU is fast enough to support streaming (quad core)

Can you specify in Ghz (approx. 3.4?)

Any quad core should be fast enough, even an old Q6600 if the settings are appropriately set.

Ah, glad this was put in place by the way. Won't net everyone from spontaneously making a topic about how to stream, but it will stop a huge chunk of those people (and the rest will be redirected suitably).

Cheers and thanks a lot!

Some Intel bias..... I have to disagree that Intel CPUs such as the Core i5 and i7 are better than AMD's offerings. Yes the i7 are better than whatever AMD has, but as for the i5, it all depends on what you compare it to.

Thanks for the sticky though. It'll help me greatly. If it doesn't.... Then I will post a thread when I can.

Not Intel bias. The 2nd generation core i5 processors destroys all of AMD's current offerings by a good margin.

If you're comparing quad core to quad core and not factoring in price, then yes AMD gets destroyed. But if you factor in the price, then well, I believe it's a bit more balanced as you can get a hexcore from AMD at the same price of Intel's quad cores (i5).

However I'll check the reviews and see what the results are just to make sure I'm not giving false info.

I did say all of their offerings which include their hex core. Cores and frequency is not all that determines processor performance.

Yes I know that, but again, factor in the price and things change a bit. However re-reading the review, it seems that Intel's offerings are better overall, so I guess I got corrected.

So once you have your stream up and running on jtv, how do you go about getting the link on the TL homepage? Is there someone you have to talk to about it or a form to fill out?

I don't know whats wrong with my stream.. I stream but for some reason I don't lag its just very choppy...

Let me explain, even when my FME is open I instantly lag, without even streaming.. I'm guessing its my output size which is at 1920x1080 right now.

I have an i7 with a Radeon 5850, 6GB, 1TB of space, and 2.80ghz.
My download speed is 41mpbs and my upload is 31mpbs. Ping is 5.. Please help. =(

2.8ghz i7, so last gen? You're going to need to OC that puppy if you want to stream at 1080p probably. I know Day[9] was running at a 4.0ghz OC when he was using a 920.

I'm no streaming expert, but I know even at 3.4ghz my i7 930 wasn't able to encode 1080p 30FPS raw Fraps output in the same amount of time as the length of the footage. I assume you need to be close to doing so.

Mind you, I was also using handbrake to encode, not sure how efficient or not it is. This is probably not super relevant, but it's the best I can give.

Not sure, tbh. I'd say just try different settings until you hit a good framerate/quality combination.

is there a specific reason why we should test it to California or you are just using the state as an example?

ya i got the same question. Is there specific reason why we should test it to California. I do live in Eastern Europe so CA is like on the other side of the planet and my down is 1.70 up 1.03... But to lets say London UK is ok-ish down 26, up 9.59

Hello,

I got a problem with VAC. I want to find a way to boost my microphone somewhat.

This is how I set it up:

This is how it looks like in Skype (microphone is fine in there for some reason, notice the green bar as opposed to audio repeater)

Anyone has any idea as for why the microphone is soooooo low (can barely, barely be heard on my stream)?

I have a dual 4.0ghz at the moment. Is the nature of the dual core such that it is very hard to stream? My graphics cards and other specs seem plenty high but lag is consistent. Should I consider upgrading to a quad?

i have a core 2 duo e7500 2.93Ghz, Geforce 9800GT, 3gb ram, and 0.5mb upload, i cant stream at all with Xsplit, i can't find a setup to make my stream ok, everybody says that xsplit is better than FME but i cant find the way to make it work, all the time im getting lag spikes, with FME i dont have this issue at all, but uses a lot of CPU, that's why im trying with xsplit but i think im gonna give up, is just, i tried a lot of setting, like video bitrate: 400, audio: from 32 to 96kbps, then preset faster. quality 10, frames from 20 to 30, and still having lag spikes...

You could try turning off hyper threading and OCing a bit. With "a bit" meaning shoot up to 3.6Ghz or so. Can do that at ~1.25 volts on my 930. Or try leaving HT on, but that can get kinda melty on temps. You got a decent cooler?

Generally, if there's a "Read this" sticky, you should read the OP. Your question is answered there. Just so you don't end up accidentally putting any effort into your problems, the answer is "no".

I'm trying to start streaming, I got it working with FMLE + VHScrCap and XSplit, but I'm wondering, is there any way to make VHScrCap or XSplit continue to capture the game window even if I alt+tab to another window?

I tried the select window on VHScrCap but it just captures the screen in the same resolution of the window I select, instead of only the window and nothing that is on top of it, and XSplit I only found options for capturing a part of the screen and not just one window.

Hi guys, i could need some advise.

Rig:
i7 920 at 4.2Ghz
6Gb DDR3 1600
2x GTX 580

100mbit download
10mbit upload

i would really like to run at HD HQ 1080p...

these are my current settings that work (framerate 30)

I mean its looking good, but its not like ingame with ultra graphics - I see streams that are looking like you would play yourself with ultra graphics - how do i achieve this ?

and second: is it somehow possible to stream also fullscreen ? even though i play sc2 in window mode, there are other games that do not support window mode.

I feel like people should actually read the thread when it's tagged with "Read this!".

@danteafk: You use a program with better quality (XSplit reduces quality a bit, even at maximum). Also, you certainly don't use a bitrate of 4000 for 1080p streaming >_____< 1080p streaming is overrated, anyway. I doubt half of your viewers would even be able to watch it at that quality.

@Veclada: That would be enough for 480p streaming. Quality depends on the program used.

Hey guys, I did read through the forum but my question wasn't answered, so hopefully somebody can help. I'll post my specs below, but first my problem. I have the resolution on xsplit set to 720p, however the quality looks as if its streaming in 240p! Nowhere close to something like 720p when I'm watching other streams. I messed with a few settings but couldn't fix it. What may be wrong here?

Specs:
i72600k, 6850 graphics card, 12gb of ram, and I average about 1.5mb/s upload, and around 14mb/s download(I know dl doesn't matter for streaming). And I'm using xsplit.

So everything seems it's in line that I'd be able to stream. I don't lag at all while streaming, and usually put my graphics down to high even though I can run ultra. Sorry if this has been answered.

My stream dont lag AT ALL. The only thing thats lags, is Starcraft 2 in windowe mode, window fullscreen, and fullscreen. Not on my computer but in the stream.. The stream dont lag while sc2 is in it, just the starcraft 2 window.. :/

My specs: FME and camwist, 12 core 16 gb ram (mac osx)
Connection: 12.mb down 4,5.mb up

FME settings: H.264, 30 fps, input size 1920x1080 (same as camtwist), bitrate 1000 kbs, 960x540 output size. I had to turn maintain spect ratio of to be able to have widescreen on twitch.tv.

I noted that my cpu shows only above 30% while streaming and gaming.

Any suggestions?

@danteafk: You use a program with better quality (XSplit reduces quality a bit, even at maximum). Also, you certainly don't use a bitrate of 4000 for 1080p streaming >_____< 1080p streaming is overrated, anyway. I doubt half of your viewers would even be able to watch it at that quality.

i switched to FMLE and now it seems fine.

however, i would also like to stream other games that have no window mode option. how is this possible? it does not show anything on the stream when playing fullscreen

any other app for this?

I am sorry if this against the rules of this topic to ask for help however i have tried making my own topic and i havent had much success with the feedback given there.

I have:
i5 750 2.6ghz (3.2ghz) (quad core)
4gb RAM
GTX 260

My internet speed is:
30mb down
3mb up

However, when i have tried to stream at 720p it is extremely laggy for the WATCHER but does not lagg at all in-game.

During streaming i have a consistent 100+ FPS.
I have tried changing the priority of xsplit to high with no apparent improvement.
I have tried changing the bitrate / quality, etc..

* The stream does not lagg at all at 480p
