Mod edit: Here is a workaround that reportedly works:
- Disable your Internet temporarily (disconnect from your wireless, disable your connection in network connections, unplug LAN cable, etc)
- Start SC2. Once the login screen appears, reconnect / re-enable your Internet and wait about 30 seconds.
- Login to SC2.
Hey guys i saw some old threads about this happening to people from back in the beta and it was attributed to server maintenance.
My SC2 client just stops responding about 1/2 a second after the login screen pops up. I am able to play offline though if i turn off my connection, so it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue on my end.
Is anyone else getting this now too or do I need to reinstall. (had been working fine up till yesterday)

same. it's very recent, too - i didn't have this problem just a few hours ago.
|
Yes I get this on europe, and I know ton of people are getting this, you don't need to reinstall.
|
I'm getting the same thing since this afternoon. It's really bugging me.

THANK YOU
Was getting very frustrated after like 3 restarts.
|
Yes. its happening to me too right now. I tried 4 times.
It was working fine 8 hours ago.
|
Yea it just started im having the same issue start the game and at the login it freezes
|
Yep same issue. US server.
|
So glad it's not a hardware issue, seems all servers patching. Bnet completely down right now.
|
Same here server EU, i almost reinstal sc2.. -.-
|
Same thing, just now
|
same...please blizzard make my day and give us chat channels etc
|
B.net The site is down for maintenance. We'll be back soon! is what i got when i went to the sc2 site to see whats going on
|
Alright then definitely looks to be a battle.net related issue. Good to know nothing has gone wrong with our computers lol.
Sit tight folks hopefully it'll be up soon
|
Same thing, and bnet site down for maintenance. Glad it's not my computer!
|
haha I'm glad I came here after I just reinstalled SC2, now it's not working at the log in screen. At least I know it's not my computer.
|
Yeah, worried me for a minute until I read this. New Vegas time!
|
Was there still a way to watch replays when this happened last time? I don't remember. I don't want to unplug my internet if I have to.
Also, this is an awful problem. Too many people think it's their computer breaking and not BNet. What a horrible idea Blizzard.
|
back from work i want to play now damn it *note to self: call lawyer about this on monday, i payed for it!*
|
i was watching reps this morning and i sit down to play and suddenly this happened too.
not being alone feels better, like something good will come of all this
|
Freezing on me right now, no fix huh?
|
|
Good to know its not my computer dying or something
|
same here, very weird that this is happening on US and EU servers...
|
Phew, relief to see this thread. Keep bumping so people wont freak out!
|
So what you guys wanna do while we pass the time... Really hope this isn't a balance patch.

Yes, go to C:\Users\compname\Documents\StarCraft II\Accounts\your acc name
then theres a folder or just dl replays and start it like that, there's no need to login for watch them so(i just tried)

The following steps that worked from last time this happened still work now:
Disable internet connection. Start SC2. Enable internet connection. Log in and play online!
|
^ Beat me to it :D
Fix: 1. Unplug Ethernet 2. Click Okay not play offline 3. Plug back in 4. Password / Login.

hahaha dude i thought my comp took a shit on my but i'm glad to see that its not my hardware. i also got battle.net is down for maintenance when i was trying to see what was wrong how convenient

WHY DOES BLIZZARD DO THIS TO US ?

My shit is freezing and not even dropping the log in screen down at all. Not that I can't log on, I can't get to it

Oh, lucky me, I was already close to smashing my keyboard o well =] time for fallout New Vegas :D
|
This has already been stated, but to ensure people know I'll state it again. This is a known issue when Blizzard does rolling restarts. A good way that I've learned to check if this will happen (rather than trying to load SC2 and it crashing), is to go to battle.net. If the site is working fine then you should be able to load SC2 fine. If the site has a message saying it is undergoing maintenance, then there is a good chance that SC2 will crash when loaded. Please remember this is all from my own personal experience, so it's not guaranteed the same will happen for all users.
|
I love how the TL.net community is so good that we can just log on and get something like this fixed :D thanks TL
|
Yeah alright. I sucked it up and just disabled my internet for a few seconds. Thanks guys, I thought I had to have it disabled the whole time.

This is confirmed to not work.. for me. I think there's a reason Blizz wants EVERYONE to be offline. TL.net bot says every server is currently patching. Something important must be going on imo. Maybe it has to do with the interface, adding chat channels perhaps?
|
Hope it's up soon :| in a tournament, lol.
EDIT: That fix worked me for anyways, ty!

Seriously....why can't I just open a program that I installed. It's MINE NOW.
I shouldn't NEED to do some stupid run around. Blizzard...why did you let yourselves be bought by those evil money lovers.....>.<

Same problem here.
I hope Blizzard fix it soon so we can even access the option to play offline. It should never hung un the first place :S .

I have a feeling that Blizzard would implement another way of notifying you that they do not currently want you to login that does not involve locking up the application.
Likely, some oversight on their end having to do with taking down certain battle.net web servers. Either way, disabling internet until prompted worked fire for me.

They should've made the message clear on the login page like they usually do. At any rate I'm sure something beneficial will come out of this.

I should always remember to check to see if battle.net is working first before I drink a ton of coffee

I tried some things and here is the solution for the problem:
1. Just unplug your cable 2. Start SC2.exe 3. The login-screen appears 4. Plug your cable in again 5. Wait like 30 seconds
-> You can join Battle.net as normal!

Yup. works!
Startup screen was locking up but if you unplug your cable after starting up sc2 it seems to work fine..... so its battle.net related. not my computer. woot!

They were likely logged in before the issue began. Either that or it's specific to a certain set of people.
|
There was a post last night from blizzard (one of those ones beside the login) that said the servers were getting restarted or something today. This is definitely the result of that.

Confirmed works, EU yah, this works fine - you can also jsut disable the LAN Adapter (under network connections) for a second, load SC2, as soon as the login screen is there, alt-tab and re-enable (no need to wait) -> login works, no freezes

I got it working by;
1)Disable your network adapter 2)Load SC2 3)Enable your network adapter 4)Make sure as soon as you hit enable on your network adapter you try to get back into SC2 as soon as possible, if your network is enabled before you alt-tab(or click) into SC2, it will crash again.
EDIT: I realize I'm not the first to post this. Just posting this for the people that didn't seem to get it to work, step 4 was screwing me over because I didn't click back into SC2 soon enough.
|
Oh you're 17 minutes late

Here I was tweaking my overclocks and I thought it was just unstable to run SC2... ugh.

i've had to do this in the past and i assume we're going to have to do this multiple times in the future. it's annoying.

I'm experiencing the exact same thing.
Trying the solution in OP now.

this workaround works, thanks alot for saving my friday <333333

I tried this, and it happened to work. Not exactly sure what was accomplished, but I was able to log as per normal, where as when I'd click my desktop icon I would get a frozen screen before I could even type the first letter of my account name.
I right click'd my sc2 icon on my desktop, "locate file location"..
Scroll down to the folder labeled "support"...
In this folder there is an executable sc2 file labeled "sc2 switcher"...
I ran this file and was able to log in no problems.
edit: sorry had this post on my internet tabs from earlier, didn't see so many posts had been made in such little time.

Bnet is back to normal for me.

Thanks man you just saved my Friday !

The best way to use the workaround is by using your ethernet cord. If you use your control panel/network settings to do it it will be too slow.
Again in detail: 1. Disconnect your ethernet cord. 2. Start up starcraft, hit ' ok at the prompt ' 3. DO NOT TYPE ANYTHING until your ethernet is back in and wait around 5 seconds for your internet connection to get back to working. 4. Now type in your password and connect.

Did WoW ever have retarded problems like this in its first couple months?
It seems so backwards to force people to login to B.net to play, when the service has so many interruptions as this. Horrible.

Although there weren't client crash on login issues, Tuesday maintenance used to last about twelve hours every week. Patch days would usually have the server down longer than that and then you'd experience constant server crashing over the next few hours.
Just recently, there was a bug in game that when you moused over certain objects, your client would crash. It took them two weeks to fix it.

no need anymore for this workaround, just login normally now
|
From reading the above, this sounds like an issue with a cached IP address.
I'd be interested to know if the same effect could be achieved by:
1) Windows key + R
2) Type CMD in the dialogue box.
3) At the command prompt (the black box of oldskool that appears) type: ipconfig /release
4) In the same black box, type ipconfig /renew
Thanks for any responses in advance.

Are some people in NA still having a problem logging in? I ran a trace according to blizzard's support website and got this
18 12.129.211.38 reports: Destination net unreachable.
on my last hop. I googled this IP and it seems it is CI - Blizzard Entertainment SID-8916. Is it just that they are still working on it, or am I missing something? Note: I tried all of the above fixes, and none of them worked
|
Ok, I fixed it. Apparently Windows 7 recognizes it as a new game when the patch has happened, but doesn't bother to ask whether you want to allow it or not. You might have to go to Windows Security and re-allow Starcraft II for home/private and public. Hopefully this helps some other folks.
|
SC2 Freezes right when that planet view appears or right when the login screen pops up I turned my router off, opened the game in offline mod Turned the router back on Game didnt log in automatically Pressed Menu>Login It freezed at the login screen
|
If the solution in the OP works, then the problem is probably with your connection to Battle.net
That method also works for other online games when you want to play online/LAN but can't connect to the server.
|
Servers are down cuz blizz is bussy with the cataclysm set up
|
yeh its down because of cataclysm's release tonight. I understand they got ridiculous amounts of players but its pretty shocking that with all there money they have to take down all game servers to do one update!
|
So, where is the problem?

That battlenet cant handle SOOOOOOOOOO MAAAAAANY players
|
On December 07 2010 06:17 ReiKo wrote: So, where is the problem?
SC2 fetches the news via HTTP that are displayed at the login screen on the left side. Since Blizzard shut off all their sites and replaced them with a generic error page, this is sent as a response, and SC2 seems to choke on it. You can prevent that by using a firewall following the steps in this post: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewpost.php?post_id=7214472

Yup pretty much this.
The funny thing is, due to the "obligatory" log-in attempt, this seems to cripple the whole sc2-code so that everything freezes and you can't even quit the game. Just another screw-up on the already very long list......never had anything like that with warcraft 3, only the servers were down for a VERY short amount of time every 2-3 months or so.
|
Stupid that different games affects eachother in this way. They should change it and fix it..
