The problem is, I have an aftermarket cooler installed (CM Hyper 212+), so this is somewhat surprising (frankly I expected temperatures like this at 4.5GHz+).
Did I install my heatsink/fan wrong or what? I'm okay with putting the clock speed back down to 4GHz if the above is quite bad. How did you apply the thermal paste? The Coolermaster Hyper 212+ is a direct touch heatsink so you should be applying thermal paste in 2 thin lines instead of the small rice grain in the middle: http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=170&Itemid=38&limit=1&limitstart=5Also ensure that the auto vcore is at a reasonable value. A 4.2GHz overclock should not be anywhere above 1.25v. Let's just say I got overzealous with the paste It covered the entire bottom, if that helps. I'll check the VCore settings when I get the chance. I left it at auto because I know completely nothing about voltages (and don't want to touch it with a ten foot poll).
Reapply the paste in two thin lines as seen in the article. Having too much thermal paste can increase temperatures because the paste will act as an insulator.
Don't be scared of touching the vcore, anything below 1.4v is perfectly safe for 24/7 operation. If the proecssor isn't receiving enough voltage, it'll just bluescreen and the vcore will be back to what it was previously set to.

hmm the 12v runs at 19, not good compared to the antec, but still should be more than enough to run my system. besides only 25 for it

The Rosewill unit has multiple 12v rails so you are misinterpreting the label. It has a total of 50a on the 12v rails. Are you buying bnib or used? Not the best idea to buy a used power supply, especially one that only comes with a one year warranty and was released three+ years ago.

bnib
oops i forgot about the multiple 12v rails ><
nvm screw it, old ass psu, i still got the $35 antec 450 deal in cart, ill just stick to that

Hello good hardware people, I have a question if no one minds. I was considering getting a new GPU that would be able to at least run sc2 on low comfortably, and maybe some other older games like stalker and oblivion. I was thinking of spending about 100$ on something and have been browsing around, but it would seem that most cards need a PCI express 2.0 and as far as I know my motherboard (ASrock k8nf4g-sata2) does not support that. So I was basically wondering is there a card out there that would suit my needs, just a simple card to run games that are a bit older with comfort. Also would I need a new power supply for it ? (currently have a Neon px-300, 300w i think) also for reference im currently using a Ati Radeon x550
Sorry for all these questions, last time I took an interest in what was new in hardware was 5 years ago so im totally lost now. Thanks.

Your motherboard supports the original PCI Express 1.0. They're backwards and forwards compatible with PCI Express 2.0 (and 1.1 and 2.1). The difference is that 2.x can run at twice the data rate of 1.x, but that's irrelevant since even the top graphics cards today would hardly be constrained by the slower 1.x interface.
You can use any of these new graphics cards if you want, if you have a power supply that can handle it. However, your old CPU is still going to be a limiting factor in many games, especially SC2.
Considering the age of your system, I would not get anything more powerful than a Radeon HD 4650 as something much better would be wasted and would require a new power supply anyway. That's already more than powerful enough to run modern games on low. It costs around 50 USD here. Other options if they're cheaper are a HD 6450, GT 220, HD 4670, HD 5550, GT 240, HD 5570, HD 5670, or HD 6670, in roughly increasing levels of performance. Actually, a GT 240 or HD 6670 might be borderline too power hungry depending on what that power supply can really do.

Thanks for the swift responses, my current cpu is a AMD sempron 1600 mhz (8 x 200) 2600+, i assume that that means its running on 2600 even though it says 1600 ? I have a budget of about 250$ and was considering getting more ram (1,5 gb currently) and could probably splurge for a better CPU too, im just worried that il get parts that wont be compatible with my motherboard and PSU, and I would really like to avoid overhauling the motherboard and PSU because I don't have a need for particularly powerful system.
|
no it's running on 1600mhz 8x200 you have an old AMD 2600+ (is just their name) which is what a socket 754 or at best a 939 so you have DDR1 ram which past 1.5 eh doesn't really seem worth it i mean past 2 gigs is pretty weird for ddr1 on a mobo. i mean the old socket 939's only supported 4gigs i forget what the avg for the 754 would be although it would depend on the nb used.
amd 2600+ Palermo (90 nm SOI) Socket 754
In other words i'd bet your motherboard would only support 3gb and not run in dual channel which is right around that era for your gear, and it seems like a waste to spend 50+ to get 512 more mb of memory.
|
Yeah that's socket 754.
http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=K8NF4G-SATA2
The CPU is too slow to bother with a higher-end GPU, and it's not like anything much better is available on socket 754. It's also probably not worth getting more DDR1 RAM at this point (max on that motherboard is 2GB from two DIMM slots).
I would upgrade the GPU to something low end like I described above and leave the rest the same, unless you want to get an entirely new system. There is not really enough money for a new system, even a low-end one, with $250 even when buying in the US.

so my motherboard cant support more than 2gb of ram total ? Eh, looks like I will have to wait a bit and get a new board and PSU too, thanks for the help. If anyone wants to recommend some ok motherboards and PSUs for a normal price feel free, need all the help I can get here

Sprinkle some dirt on it and see if a museum will buy it as the missing link between pocket calculators and computers, it pretty much belongs in the fossil record anyway

$75 - HD 5670 $119 - Athlon II X3 + Biostar Mobo $40 - 4GB GSkill RAM $50 - Corsair CX430W PSU
Comes to $244 after $40 in MIR. Hopefully you are somewhere that newegg ships to.

I am finally ready to order! Do you have any suggestions given the new sale? Sorry for asking again, I am just a novice and don't want to mess anything up regarding compatibility. =]

wowow nice build! what kind of resolution and settings can this computer achieve (SC2)? can it do some streaming as well? I am also looking for a similar computer in this price range for SC2 and getting ready for Guild Wars 2. I like that graphics card but anyone know of a different GPU that would work well with this build? I think I would like to spend about $100 more on a GPU but run everything else the same. Thanks!
