Do you need to buy from Amazon?

Anyway, I'd just get the TruePower New 550W. That could handle SLI GTX 560 Ti unless you plan to overclock them and run them with an overclocked i7-9xx or Phenom II X6, and then try to max out the power consumption. It would work under normal gaming load with the above conditions. You would just need to use a couple molex to PCI-E power adapters whenever you get the second GTX 560 Ti, if that happens. It's $60 on Amazon with $12 shipping, so a pretty good price for something of that caliber: http://www.amazon.com/Antec-Truepower-TP-550-550-Watt-Certification/dp/B001RTPMLA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1304375795&sr=8-3

You could overclock a i5-2500k and overclock two GTX 560 Ti and be fine on the TruePower New 550W. Just don't be unreasonable on the GPU overclocks, or also run like 8 HDDs in RAID or something like that. If you're doing stuff like that, then expect something like FurMark + LinX to make the PSU shut itself off harmlessly. + Show Spoiler [video] + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA_OYYneNsU Keep in mind that the above parts aren't overclocked and the test they're running isn't maxing out power draw, but you get the idea. I don't think you're going to be running a full synthetic load 24/7 either. The PSU has a 5 year warranty anyway. edit: so 650W may be recommended for SLI GTX 560 Ti, but if you have a lower-power CPU like a i5-2500k and especially if you don't plan on overclocking the GPUs, you're good to go. You're especially fine on a good PSU like a TruePower New.

I'm not all that tech savvy, but from what I've read I should be able to manage it... I hope. I was also thinking of possibly buying from cyberpower, they seem to have crazy low prices, though seem to have some mix reviews. Any thoughts on buy/building? I have keyboard/mouse/speakers, but need a monitor. What is your budget? I'd like to stick as close to 1000 total, but I'd be willing to go over with the monitor+OS. I want to get a quality machine that will last, but not go over board if an upgrade isn't to noticeable. What is your resolution? 1920x1200 What are you using it for? Mostly gaming, I'd like to be able to play on ultra, while streaming(if I get into that in the future). I'd also like to be able to handle future games. What is your upgrade cycle? 2+ years. As long as I can go without, without going overboard on the spending. When do you plan on building it? I want to finish it by May 30th. Start building it asap. Do you plan on overclocking? I don't think so... I don't know too much about it. From what I've read it may not be worth the effort for me, plus, it seems a bit too tech savvy for me. Do you need an Operating System? Yes, but I don't want to add it in the initial budget. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? I wouldn't mind advice on this. Is it a good idea/worth it? Or is can one nice GPU cut it. Where are you buying your parts from? Tigerdirect or newegg. Any preferences on those? I keep seeing different things about them. My preliminary build: CPU- i5 2500k - 229.99 MB- MSI P67A-http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=40755&CatId=6978 -- I really don't know what I'm looking for with motherboards, I just matched the sockets and picked a mid price. RAM- 4GB- single stick ~50-60 bucks HD- http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7332879&CatId=2459 -500GB, 7200RPM- $40 Graphics card(I'm debating, not sure how much I need to spend)- Radeon HD 5850 Video Card - 139.99(after rebate)-- do I need more? Radeon vs EVGA geforce? Case- I like the cooler masters, I wasn't sure if I would need a full tower, or one of the HAF 922 or 912 Mid towers would fit everything fine/keep it cool enough. Monitor- I was think a nice big LED backlit. 21-23 inch. ~$200. Power supply- I'm really not sure how much I need.. 500-750? ~$100 That's coming out around $900 I think+ the OS, which is good. So, good build, bad build? Do you think this is more or less power than I'd want? Thanks!

Overclocking isn't that hard on the newer Intel processors but it will add a premium to your configuration as it can only be done with a core i5 2500k ($225) and a P67 motherboard (~$130). SLI / CrossfireX is not worth it unless you plan on playing at a resolution higher than 1920x1200. In most cases, it is always better to get a single graphics card and upgrade to a newer generation of graphic cards. A classic example would be the 8800GT which was released three years ago at $200. Now we have the GTX 460 and 6850 for sub $200 prices and they outperform a 8800GT SLI setup and give off less noise and heat as well. There is no point in paying for higher frequency RAM or tigher timings, there is a negligible increase in performance: http://techreport.com/articles.x/20377 You should not be paying anymore than $42 for 4GB and no more than $82 for 8GB. The below configuration is capable of streaming and playing most if not all current games at 1920x1080 on high settings. Total comes to $871 before mail in rebates: Core i5 2400 @ $190 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074 Asrock H61M U3S3 @ $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157236 Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB 1600MHz @ $75 (with promo code EMCKFHB23, ends May 4th) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145345 Gigabayte GTX 560 OC @ $245 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125369 XFX Core Edition Pro 450w @ $55 ($45 after mail in rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207012 Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB @ $45 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136769 Coolermaster HAF 912 @ $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233 Windows 7 Home Premium @ $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986 DVD Drive @ $21 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204

Looking to build one within a budget of $1000 - $1200 -- this is including a monitor as well. What is your resolution? Unsure but I'm looking at getting a monitor that is 23" or bigger. So any video graphic card that can support that in max resolution. What are you using it for? Mostly gaming but generally an overall good computer. What is your upgrade cycle? Probably 2 years so I'm looking at a computer than will last me quite a while. When do you plan on building it? Hopefully over this summer ![]() Do you plan on overclocking? I'm new to this whole building your own system thing so I'm not particularly comfortable in overclocking just yet, maybe in the future, so I will like to have the option to do so. Do you need an Operating System? I do but I might be able to get it for free. So please don't include it within the budget. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Most likely not, but I wouldn't mind having the the option to be able to do so. Where are you buying your parts from? I work at Microcenter so I'll most likely be getting the parts there. But newegg is a close alternative. I'm also open to suggestions. Thanks in advance for your help! Hope you guys can build me a smexxy rig.

You can save a little bit of money with an equivalent motherboard (maybe slightly better, as it's H67 and thus has native SATA3) in this combo with the i5-2400: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.638720 If you're not concerned with always playing all the latest games on highest or very high settings, or are willing to replace the GPU with something better down the line, I think the Sapphire HD 5850 Xtreme is the better deal, since it's only $140: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102932 http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/295?vs=330 (but note that the Gigabyte card in question is overclocked by a lot, so it'd be maybe 15% better than what's shown here) Personally I'd take a better monitor or an SSD over that difference in graphics power, but that's just me. The HD 5850 is already a little overkill for SC2 on ultra. A decent SSD is a Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB, for $120 shipped ($15 cheaper than on newegg) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/742418-REG/Crucial_Technology_CTFDDAC064MAG_1G1_64GB_RealSSD_C300_2_5_.html @JJGamer Ask again closer to when you're buying. AMD's next-gen CPUs will be out by then, but we don't know specifics about their performance or pricing now. Prices change over time too. So what's good now might not be available or might not be the best pick later.

Initial Questions + Show Spoiler + What is your budget? ~$400 What is your resolution? 1920x1080 What are you using it for? Mostly gaming, some programming related stuff including various IDEs, MATLAB as well, etc etc. Maybe streaming if my computer can support it. What is your upgrade cycle? I'm probably not going to upgrade this computer for a long, long time if at all seeing as how I dont plan on picking up any other games that tax the computer. When do you plan on building it? Sometime during the summer. In 1-2 months probably. Do you plan on overclocking? No Do you need an Operating System? No Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No Where are you buying your parts from? Anywhere - I have access to a Frys Basically, I have everything besides the actual PC itself. I'm thinking I'll need to buy a CPU, Motherboard, RAM, GPU, PSU, Case, HD. Is there anything else I'm missing like a wireless adapter? Standard ethernet connection for internet is included in the motherboard usually, right? PCU/Motherboard + Show Spoiler + I was looking into getting the Core i3 2100, but I'm not sure if that'll fit my budget. I was looking into these bundle deals that include a Core i3 2100: ASUS P8H67-M LX (REV 3.0) Micro ATX Intel Motherboard+CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.638749 GIGABYTE GA-H67MA-USB3-B3 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard+CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.638725 MSI H67MA-E35 (B3) Micro ATX Intel Motherboard+CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.638726 BIOSTAR H67MU3 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard+CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.638750 Are there really any huge differences? (They're all very similar in price) Memory + Show Spoiler + Not really sure about my choice in memory, I kind of looked for 4gb (2x2gb) ddr3's on newegg and sorted by price, this is what i found. seems to have good reviews too? G.SKILL NS 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-4GBNS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231396 GPU + Show Spoiler + I'm a bit confused when it comes to the GPU. Why do you guys have it separated by resolution, and if I were to play the game with medium-high settings, what would I need? And would streaming also stress the GPU more or is that more of a CPU thing? Would this be okay? PowerColor AX5770 1GBD5-H Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131330&cm_re=5770-_-14-131-330-_-Product I read that this would run sc2 very well at 1920x1080 at a176's thread @ http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=207481 PSU + Show Spoiler + Is this a good choice for power supply? Or is there anything else cheaper and still reliable? Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W Continuous power ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371033 Hard Drive + Show Spoiler + Kind of arbitrarily picked this one based on price from newegg Western Digital Caviar Blue WD2500AAKX 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136771 Case + Show Spoiler + As far as a case goes, all the motherboards I linked in the combo deals said they were MicroATX motherboards. Does that mean I should filter for only the MicroATX Desktops/Midtowers/Minitowers etc on newegg when searching? Or do just regular ATX full/mid/mini towers still work? And would this work? APEVIA X-QBOII X-QBOII-NW-BK/500 Black SECC Steel MicroATX Mini Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811144224 I see that this also comes with a power supply, but I'm not sure how reliable that would be. Any opinions? ~200 for mobo+cpu, 40 for memory, 115 for GPU, 40 for HD, 55 for case (25 after MIR) 47 for that PSU that i didn't need because of the bundle deal with the case. If I use the power supply bundled with the case, my purchase comes out to be $455, $420 after MIR. What do you guys think? I expect my build to be pretty bad, but I understand that the best way to build a budget computer is to buy things on sale and wait for nice slickdeals or combo deals to come along, so I hope to gain knowledge more than anything from your guys' thoughts. Thanks!

You might be able to do some low-res streaming on an i3, but not entirely sure. If you're using a1's guide, you're in fairly solid hands. As for why people mention resolution when discussing GPU's, basically, the resolution is a number of pixels. Each pixel represents 32 bits of information (32 bit color). The higher the resolution, the more pixels the graphics card is providing data for, the more work it has to do per frame.
