I did search for this using the search function, couldn't be bothered manually looking in all the threads so I thought I'd post this, if it's old, close thread.:

http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/10/qa-starcraft-ii.html

Quite long ... and Browder is cool...

Great interview. Browder seems totally genuine and that's what I love about Blizzard. They aren't corporate suits. They're kids inside who are just insanely passionate about what they want to make and why they want to make it.

If any company in the world can create the next Starcraft. It's Blizzard.

The overall tenor of the responses seems like Browder. I'd like to see some additional confirmation, like a video interview.

The comment at the end about him preferring to add value over costs is heartening, though. It means there's less of a chance of added costs to B.Net that screw over entry to competitive gaming.
Darkness called...but I was on the phone, so I missed him. I tried to *69 darkness, but his machine picked up. I yelled "Pick up the phone, Darkness", but he ignored me. Darkness must have been screening his calls.

Wired: Are these going to be the kind of things that only -- I don’t wanna say the changes are “nuanced,” but they’re the sort of things that will only be noticed by the hardcore high level players?

Browder: I dunno. I mean, it’s hard for me to say. I’ve become a bit hardcore myself over the last couple years, so we’ll kinda see when we get it in front of a lot of casual guys.

There’s a lot of casual guys in the studio. We’ve got such a big studio now with all the WoW people we’ve hired. The response so far has not been like that.

Wired: That’s the exact opposite of what EA says.

Browder: Oh, I know. I used to work there.

Wired: So is that -- assuming this all works -- it seems kinda reminiscent of what Valve is doing with Half-Life 2 where they originally stated it was episodic, but then they decided to make the episodes their own games. Is that the direction Blizzard wants to go with their games?

Browder: I don’t think we've thought of it in that sense. It’s not like we considered the philosophical choice of whether we want to be more or less like Valve. We just looked at this product, this problem, and this was our solution.

I mean, definitely, what Valve is doing came up in our discussions. “They’re doing this, is that something that would work for us?” but it’s not like a premonition of things to come. This means nothing to Diablo -- unless it does. Unless they go “Hey, we’ve got the same problem, maybe that would solve it for us.” But I don’t think that that’s necessarily the case.
What exactly did Valve do?

Wired: When WarCraft III came out, like you said, the editor really took off. Moreso than the old 2-D editors. There was a mod, whose name I’m forgetting, but some people tried to recreate StarCraft within WarCraft III. I believe this was like 5 or 6 years ago. What happened was that Blizzard stepped in and sent them a Cease & Desist ...

Browder: Really? How interesting. I hadn’t heard that.

I like this part:
Wired: People are still buying WarCraft III just to play DotA.

Browder: I’ve heard many such stories. And even if it wasn’t money in our pocket, it’s still just a fun experience for them, and that’s all we’re here to sell. That’s all we’re trying to do.

Wired: That’s the exact opposite of what EA says.

Browder: Oh, I know. I used to work there.

edit: oh damn, i submitted late... haha was busy conversing..

On Valve:
Most devs would usually discuss about the STEAM platform concerning VALVE but in this case, it's just about their HL2: ep 1... ep2... ep3... etc content delivery.

On the part about SC mod:
Wired got it significantly wrong. Very wrong. Project Revolution never got a C&D (unless they got one recently). Project Revolution did notify Blizz. Project Revolution would still required SC & BW cds thus not affecting their sales(legally). Project Revolution's progress going slow... heh.

The only significant one that receive a C&D was the one that modded Half Life. I would think the one converting C&C:Generals received one as well but I can't be too sure about that.

Better ask the more hardcore old-timers in mapmaking/modding for clearer details. I hung out in mapmaking but wasn't too hardcore so what I wrote was just the gist of it.

Yea never mind, did some quick googling and it seems like Blizzard never sent them the C&D indeed.

Browder is the head developer, not the company head. Browder is powerless over the lawyers but he may consult with Morhaime about them but since it's ActiBlizzard now, maybe it's Kotick now. Still, it's the business people who are handling them so there's no conflict there.

The mod was called WC3 tho, if I remember correctly. It wasn't a straight up WC3 or WC2 conversion tho, I mean they had ogres and shit which isn't in the orc race for WC3, but they also had taurens/minotaurs, which are in WC3 but not WC2. Then the whole demon race for zerg etc.

Probably speaking of the abovementioned SC->WC3/2 conversion which did get a cease and desist.
You can read the C&D letter here: http://web.archive.org/web/20030801082505/www.infoceptor.com/war3tc/
Or check out the mod here:

Or dl it here, thanks to Iskatsu:

Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone else remember the total conversion of SC into a WC3/WC2 game, that was then shut down by blizzard shortly before they released WC3?

Hosted on Infoceptor iirc. Really liked that mod, if anyone still has it I'd appreciate an upload =]

Hey. I think I still have it somewhere. If not then I'd know where to get it. I'll see if I can find time to hunt it down sometime.

/edit

Aha, quick search found it.

iirc I remember the mod having arsenal/ice corruption in it. Which basically means that it has a lovely tendency to crash randomly, and fairly frequently in mid and late game. The delights of long outdated tools. I can't remember if the exes are Stargraft or Mpqdraft exes, but you can just rename your patch mpq with the mod's one to launch it if they throw you some weird error. This of course will omit any button changes there were, but I can't recall if there were any or not.

http://www.staff.samods.org/iskatumesk/wc3tc.zip

edit 2 -

Ah yeah, I think those are stargraft exes after all. They're for version 1.07. Running them will probably produce an error and generate a bunch of random files. I don't think the !secwad actually does anything, so you'll probably need to either downgrade to 1.07 or rename the patch mpq with the mod one.

This was a really good interview, although a lot of things he said were very touchy-feely.

The game, the Terran campaign, just got too big. It’s just too big for it. We coulda nerfed it. We totally could of.

i generally dont care, but cmon! whoever wrote that blog needs to proofread his shit

but anyway, the interview was pretty cool. and something to take away from reading this:
Browder: We’re definitely looking at new units for each of the expansions for each of the races. When you get to the Zerg campaign you’ll get new Zerg units, new Terran units, new Protoss units. And we’ll look to see what we can do to improve Battle.net as we go, and we’ll look to see what we can improve in our replay system as we go, so it's whatever we can think of to do to make the product cool and valuable to our players.
