Congrats to Gumiho. I wonder if this is a one-off or if C9 sees value in creating a SC2 team.
Playing better than standard requires deviation. This divergence usually results in sub-standard play.

Huh. I wonder if this pickup is because they find SC2 cost-efficent or if there's rumblings of new stuff on the horizon. Probably the former.... hopefully the latter.

Anyway grats Gumiho and C9!

Bit torn on this. On the other hand cool for Gumiho and C9. On the other, you just know its because of that Saudi tournament coming up next year.

Cloud 9 can finance a whole CS team and else, so funding a SC2 player is peanuts in comparaison. Gotta see in the near future

But it begs the question why existing SC2 teams did not ...
I'm just a cynical video game enjoyer who is probably unfazed by many business dealings many would find utterly distasteful, while not strictly illegal by the law as seen in a general sense in the world.

https://cloud9.gg/players/pyungjae-koh/

"Pyungjae “GuMiho” Koh is a professional StarCraft II Terran player from South Korea. He has an impressive record of achievements including a 1st place finish in 2017 Global StarCraft II League Season 2: Code S and a 2nd place finish in ESL SC2 Masters 2023 Summer. To date, GuMiho is the only player to achieve an all-kill in the Global StarCraft II Team League Finals when he completed a sweep of SlayerS-EG. GuMiho is most known for his innovative and meta breaking Terran builds and is committed to always pushing the limits of Terran and himself to win.

Yeah, I don't see anyone breaking that record anytime soon.
Stopped watching ESL content in 2022 when the company was acquired by Savvy Gaming Group. Also object to sponsorships by the U.S. Air Force. Thanks for the lively discussions about sportswashing. StarCraft II is not for me anymore.

I don’t know for other esports, but in LoL they are from NA so they lose in international events each and every year. At least, they are relevant domestically and have a large fan base

Well, he left Psistorm because they couldn't afford his salary anymore (or rather couldn't "pay him the salary he deserves" in their own words), so I guess no one wanted or could pay that kind of money?

The only tournament that we can compare with is the playoff of WTL but it is different mainly because of online setups. So, it is definitely a legit argument.

For sure. They have a franchise in valorant. That was actually recently marred by cost cutting headlines so surprising to see them enter a new realm lol.

Like everyone else, I'm happily confused.

My best guess:
1. Profit in SC2 is small, but investment is tiny.
2. Saudi esports world cup.

NO.

We gave him raises. He asked for another shortly after a raise but it was too high we couldn't afford it. So he decided not to continue.

He bet on himself as I mentioned, and it took months but he presumably got what he wanted. I've always said he deserved it and support him if you check my tweets.

Best to him and C9, and this is great news for GuMiho and SC2 in general.

Sorry if my post came around like I was suggesting there was any beef between Psi and Gumiho. I just wanted to point out that you specifically (and in good-will) said that you couldn't afford his salary-wishes and I assumed that these were a big reason he wasn't picked up by anyone else.

There is not much concrete, but they way they teased it there is a possibility that it will be a cross-game tournament, so orgs will need a broad lineup to compete. And since RTS is listed as one of the genres they want to include, it makes sense to pick SC2

They already had something like this in 2023, where there was a side prize pool (still in the millions) given to the teams/clubs with the best overall placement all across games. They're now shifting to make that overall team competition the main focus in 2024.

Stormgate will not be a competitive and balanced game by the time this world cup takes place.
If we go by Gamers8 this will be some time in summer 2024

Classic making Ro4 in Gamers8 net his team 400k or something, being 1st place team instead of 2nd place. So I wont be shocked if teams will start hiring SC2 players if they boost the prize next year for team award.
