However, apart from that, whats the issue? Why are some people upset? I mean, its your choice. I choose to join it, because i love sc2. And if you dont want to contribute, then dont. So.... People like being upset.

I'm really happy to see the Patreon is so successful so far!! Doubling the prize pool is already HUGE, imagine first place winning $18k instead of $9k or whatever, that's way more sustainable. Not high but still a big help for sure. Holy crap it's at $12,500 a month right now, that means we're getting like $150k more prize pool a year, $50k more a season...!!! We already TRIPLED the GSL prize pool!!! That means first place will win like $21k instead of $7500, meaning GSL prize pools will be close to what they were in 2022!!

Saying that something is "free" in 2023 is a rather naive outlook. It would make more sense if you donate to a players or even players you like, but a company such as AfreecaTV strongarming its viewers is just scummy behavior. Dude it's optional. They put this out here, in a hurry btw, because we asked them to, because the community asked to help donate to increase the prize pool because the truth is that GSL's prize pool is unsustainable for the players playing it and they will quit because it's not enough. Afreeca isn't a huge company, they can't afford to give out the prize pools they did before on their own, SC2 in Korea isn't popular, it can't survive without foreign fan support. The choices are this, you can either get more involved, or you can do nothing. No one is forcing you to get involved. But without more fan support like this Patreon, and it doesn't just HAVE to be this Patreon there are dozens of other ways you can support the players individually like you even alluded to, but without fan support GSL will not survive much longer. It was Blizzard's money that was keeping it going and that isn't coming back.

Group A vod on YouTube has over 60k views and yet only 700 patrons. That's barely over 1% of viewers. I hoped at least 5-10% of viewers would be willing to offer support. I know the Patreon isn't the best and voiced my thoughts on improvements earlier but still thought there'd get more participation. I don't think 12k+ monthly support is sustainable from 700 people. Well, there are 804 patrons now and still increasing. How many YT views are from bots/indexers. Or from people without a credit card. Or people in the third world where spending $5USD is actually a huge deal. I don't think correlating YT views with # of patrons is important or matters. Either way, great for Korean SC2.

Ps: I wish they didn't said the 100% into the prize pool thing, I wouldn't mind paying for the staff and stuff if they can't go on without it. Yes, you are taking advantage of koreans because Blizz is a really troublesome company and it will get worse in the future. Be kinder with the staff

Time to start playing brood war that patreon is totally nuts. people spend on Tastosis almost 150.000$ a year only to CAST two tournaments (that are already available "for free" with other people casting or on Afreeca). there's zero added value to the scene, to the game and to the players for that money. it's not like that money is keeping Brood War alive or the Afreeca tournament alive... it's all going into the commentators' pocket! The tournament would be exactly the same without that patreon.

To be honest, I am surprised that you find this to be so offensive to stop watching GSL. This is not "strongaming" just because you want to raise the prizepool for the player, so what you say just doesnt make sense. when the product gets smaller, prize pools get smaller, players practice less and retire, fewer people will watch. that's not an assumption. there's a 0% chance viewers stay the same when the product shrinks. it's like expecting the same number of fans to show up to attend NBA if 10 teams folded and the playoffs were shorter also you are confusing me with another poster. i don't care about the prize pool or making GSL do anything, i'm just weighing in on the side of people who are losing interest. not hating, but i think it's goofy to pretend everyone who watches starcraft will watch forever. we're all going to watch online cups with mid players when we're 50-60 years old? come on now lol. most people lose interest over time, only a tiny fraction are hardcore enough to keep going at this point. i watched for 10 years so i'm already in a small percentage. it's a computer game and it had a great run as an esport and entertainment product. there's no salt or hate in talking about the fact that GSL is winding down it's a shame because i actually do really like state with tasteless. if only we could have had him instead of artosis the whole time

I might just be confused like you said, but it sound like you want to stop supporting/watching GSL because they want to crowdfund for player prize pool? I get that the execution hasnt been great, or even good, but most of us have no issue whatsoever with this move. Thats the only point I am trying to make here, if that was an mis-understanding, then sorry for the post, lets move on.
