And the entire football league in a spending mania poaching players from Europe.
And buying the entire PGA golf tour.
And buying into Formula 1. Including insisting to have the race going on despite missile striking the city the race was hosted in.

Really, really not what SC2 actually needs is another big money tournament for the top players around though. On top of an exhibition tournament of undoubtedly rusty legends with double the prize pool of the last GSL season? Yeah that’ll really help the scene… Compared to the money needed to gain traction in Formula One or football, eSports bar to entering the scene as a big player and host is absolutely minuscule, I’m still equally as wary of the underlying motivations. We haven't seen the prize distribution yet, have we? It could be a good spread with high payouts to the bottom players. I mean yeah for a healthier scene they would've given money to more than just top 16 players but it's not like this is hurting the scene. If it were Blizzard or ESL funding this it would be one thing, but this just seems like someone (or multiple people?) throwing money at their own entertainment lol, we're lucky that it's us and not some other game. Apparently there are atleast 12 different games that get money thrown at during this event. It is just sportswashing, so of course the TO tries to get as many top players as possible. Not much use to invest in lower level players if you just want to connect with a younger audience fast As I know the Arabs, I have never seen them even try to build a solid food chain from the bottom up. All they do is skimming the top of a scene, going for the most publicity money can buy. This event goes right into their usual strategy. I would actually respect them a lot more if they shifted to sponsoring smaller and local events all around Western Europe. That should even do a better job of painting them as "good guys", or at least show they have a likeable side. User was warned for this post Not even trying to hide being a racist pos, impressive. This is great for the scene, a literal god send. Can't wait to watch it! I fail to see how making the rich and successful players richer is great for the scene, but feel free to enlighten me.

This is just quibbling about the most efficient way to use money to support SC2—Gamers8 is pretty obviously and unambiguously good for JUST the SC2 esports scene in a vacuum. Fans get entertained by a world championship class event, top players remain in the scene (I have to think many would have retired or toned down activities without Gamers8, especially since Katowice 2024 hasn't even been confirmed), SC2 stays in the mix as a 'relevant' if low-tier esport. The question being posed to everyone is whether or not the good of StarCraft II should be pursued at all other costs.

And yeah very nice that those who qualified will make a few thousand, maybe pay $1k for flight and $1k for lodging.

Saudi always takes care of their players and athletes whenever they invite them out. No doubt. But even if they didn't the players have teams that afford flight and lodging.

The $ definitely helps to keep the top players going. And bringing the old legends back? Can't wait to see them play, wonder if they will bring some of the oldest builds back, or follow today's meta.
