Looking for older SC2 players still playing, I'm 58 and still playing. Currently Gold for 1v1, did make Plat at 52 and now have some free time, so I'll try and get back to Plat.
Would like to start a new Clan / Group for us older players.
My SC2 player details are: DejaVu#6981
Look forward to hearing from any older players, particularly any in their 50's.
Cheers.

Hi, any Group / Clan name suggestions would be appreciated.
I have thought of "Old Guys Rule" with the Tag "OGR" but that tag has been taken.
So any ideas would be welcome, cheers.

I'm 42 year old filthy toss player with bad wrists. I might join and drag down the new clan's reputation.

perhaps you could revive the OGS-clan
Furthermore, I consider that some kind of Code A must be reestablished.

What I'm actually super curious about is how you (even) older folks got into playing the game - I mean, I'm 33 and got exposed heavily to so much RTS goodness during the mid/late 90s like most players around my age.

I guess it was referring to oGs and it did mean Old Generations.

I started with SC1 and Brood wars, always played PC games. Also played World of Warcraft before it became what it is now.
I am beginning to think I'm the only player over 50 !
Surely there has to be others over 50 who play. So many good older Players, good work guys. We have some Diamond and Masters in the mix, good work hey !!.
I do owe a big thanks to a player from the USA named Elmeanyo who helped me refine my game, that refinement improved my game quite a bit and helped me get into Plat 1v1.
Come on guys there has to be someone else over 50, I cannot be the only 1.
I like both - Old Generations and Old Gamer of Stracraft, will have to pick one of these.
Thanks guys, appreciated.

I think the lower number of older plays is not due to lack of interest, just due to lack of time. Watching Starcraft 2 esports is easier to do with a busy life, especially VODs that you can pause.

Im "only" in my 40s, but could gladly join this if there is room. Would be nice to have a mature clan to join to.

What goes to the name, hmmmmm.......GGS.....Golden Generation of Starcraft ?

I taught starcraft2 to a 46 year old project manager to whom i occasionally report. She is now 1v1 in Gold and 2v2 in Platinum. No one in her office will play against her. LOL.

Her previous experience with "this type of game" was Intellivision Sea Battle against her brother circa 1982. ROFLMAO. So I did a bit of research on that game. For a game made in 1981 or 1982 I was surprised how detailed it was.

You guys are depressing I'm 27 and feel more energetic than when I was 22. I'm sure I'm more energetic than quite a lot of people who are 5 years younger as well (hint: sport and weight). Also, currently masters 3 in SC2: https://starcraft2.com/en-gb/profile/2/1/870038

OP was asking about people in their 50’s. Anyone in his mid 30’s was probably not even born when he got his first car... Be patience, time passes for all

I’ll bookmark this thread and revive it in 2023. I hope your clan will still be up and running!

Applicants will be given a tv remote and be asked to do some basic tasks like changing display input, opening netflix, and switching channels. If you can do all of these then you're too young to apply.

Indeed. I would say that any applicants need to have at least one of the following criteria:

- Bad/Chronic Wrist Pain caused by gaming

- A Bad Back from sitting in computer chairs all day

- Poor Vision from staring at screens all day

- Played Any RTS game during the 1990s

If you also count shoulder pain, I qualify 3 out of 4. At 41, I'm a bit worried at what life will throw at me next

Man I'm 25 and I just make time to play, I got a family a full time job and have to work out and I still find time 2-3 times a week to play for a hour or two, I would prefer to play for a couple hours then sit down and do nothing for that time instead.

I am suprised people cant find the time to play, unless they have other hobbies that are more important I guess

Didn't really think of an age Limit as such, how about 30+, sound fair ?
The clan name i think will be "SC2 Seniors" Tag - SC2S. How does that sound ?
Anyone over 30 is a senior these days so I'm told

When I saw this title I was like "Oh, OK, it is going to be a bunch of people who weren't even old enough to pickup BW, and I will actually turn to dust upon reading this tread", but I am surprised (and not dust!). I will send a message next time I am on.

I am 39. I am Diamond 2 NA player. I almost hit Masters but never really make it. Not a big deal. I now have two kids (2.5 yr and 4 months old) so the time to play is significantly less.

i'm 45, 3 kids, wife, perfect vision and no pain.
actually i don't think i'm old, i feel i am the same idiot as i was at 20.

Ah bummer, at 29 I'm just a bit too young. See y'all in a year...maybe I'll be high masters by then!

I do have terrible eyesight, nerdback pain from a PhD (and gaming...), wrist pain from computer work/gaming/cycling, and played SC/BW, WC2, AoE, and C&C in the 90s.

Hey Deja its me! Glad to see you are back brother. I still play once in a while and it would be fun to get back on the saddle again. I'll look for you this weekend.

Lots of great older players around, so cool. So many funny posts here as well.

There is a player from the euro region (littlenemo #2737 see his previous post) who wants to start a euro Clan, awesome Idea.

I’ll try to respond to friend requests as quickly as I can and send Invites to Join the new Clan.

Perhaps I will join your ranks when I hit 30 in a few months, young in most people’s eyes but in Starcraft terms it’s ancient!

Speaking to some of you genuine older folks here, do you feel age actually physically hinders you much in playing the game on ladder?

I’m probably faster and more accurate than I was when I was younger, but a lot of that is due to how I’ve deliberately practiced certain things. I spend a lot of time thinking and visualising about the game, which weirdly seems to translate quite quickly to when I play. Losses make me less salty now I’m a bit more mature, so I feel I learn a bit faster as well from defeat.

I’m curious really, I think the only reason young folks have historically been dominant in games is because it’s a relatively new medium, and young people have fewer commitments on their time. My dad was interested in my gaming, but we didn’t play together because he had never really played games himself and I stomped him from the age of 6/7. Nowadays however I can play games with my youngling, because it’s a hobby I had myself. I imagine it’s only relatively recently that many parents will be guiding their charge’s early gaming experiences rather than just observing from a distance.

One other phenomenon I’ve noticed is I’m way, way better at navigating a keyboard than most people who are 5-10 years younger than me. My formative years were initially in pre-broadband internet, so to communicate with people across the globe playing games like Diablo 1 and 2, or WarCraft 3 and Starcraft I had no other options than typing, so my hobbies gave me professional tier typing chops.

Necessity being the mother of invention and all that, nowadays young people are raised with VoIP and video calling being omnipresent, and the home PC not being the entertainment hub it once was what with smartphones and tablets, so perhaps they lag behind in certain skills that we just naturally picked up by virtue of our environment.

I'm 47 and first played sc1 when it came out in my 20s. I seem to recall being faster then but it was a long time ago and age... well it creeps up on you. I also still play basketball, and on the court it is VERY apparent that I'm not what I used to be. But it is the same with 'non-physical' activities like starcraft?

It's a good question of which there is no simple answer. I do believe that the human male is at their mental and physical peak in their early 20s. Look at all the top people, whether it be sports, science, art, etc... most famous ones did their best stuff while young.

There are a lot of other factors too. Some individuals are just gifted, others (me) not so much, so that plays into it. Look at guys like Vince Carter in the NBA and Tom Brady NFL. They are way past their primes and still playing well, but arguably they are gifted. Back to SC2, look at oldies like SoO and Fantasy. Still killing it at way past what would be considered their SC2 prime.

But for the vast majority of us, yes, age affects us. Certainly in physical sports, but even in video games that require quick decision making or hand-eye coordination. I just can't react as fast as I could in my 20s, and expect that if I was somehow motivated to practice 8/hrs a day, this wouldn't improve much. When it comes to slower paced games like turn-based, card-based, strategy, we oldies can sometimes hold our own. But then it comes down to time.

At the end of my 20s i got married and had kids. Any free time I had went out the window for at least 10 years, but I loved it. Things have slowed down now that my boy is out the door and I have more time, but you know what? This once hard-core gamer has picked up a few new interests over the years that I enjoy as much as gaming, sometimes more. That, and I have a wife to keep happy.

Playing SC2 is very much a trip down nostalgia lane for me at this point. Love it just really for the memories it brings back, and not so much for the competition anymore. We leave that to the young guys. We will be happy to kick back with a beer for WCS and cheer you on!

I thought I was to old for playing video games.

Keep on playing! I've played since 99 and love it.

i got glasses at 40 and i hate it and
pretend i don't need them (cos u know i'm dumb)

after 4 hours of heavy duty gaming i need to walk off the back sh it that could happen if i don't
(we require to not ever get stuck ever ever again <3 trust me you don't either not being able to move your back is like you can't do no thing, not a one)

i had to add bladder go to loo breaks (i used to have to stop every 8 hours now i got to do it every 4)

i think my efficiency at choosing what i do while gaming (multitasking microing really not build order choice or reads on opponent) has never been better / as efficient

then again sc2 is a build order game and that's become more annoying with the decade of sc2 turning the corner i admit

i think the important thing is to play, i never mind losing if i had fun
so on the whole i don't feel impaired from going over 45 mark

Okay so age / getting older and SC2:
Well I’ve always been active as well, played Rugby League up till I was 32. Stopped because I was getting to brittle and from the age of 28 it became obvious when I was being tackled by a younger player, the hits where much much harder than guys around my age. I played on the wing or as fullback and speed also dropped off the cliff for me at 28, at least that was the point in time that I noticed it.

I think it’s all relative, speed – age – ability. The older we get the harder certain things become, with age comes knowledge and life experience which I believe enhances cognitive skills. But with this there is also a drop off point where two particular cognitive skills “Speed of Information Processing and Working Memory” started to drop off. For me personally I noticed this in my early fifties as I was still working in IT, it became apparent particularly when dealing with Servers and other complex areas within IT.

For me now it’s a mix between playing VS A.I. and League, I still enjoy very much playing league when the mood hits me, win or lose doesn’t matter just enjoy the challenge. It’s amazing how many different ways you can be beaten.

I also ride (Harleys of course) with my wife, she has her own Harley and it’s something we both enjoy doing very much, this I will also keep doing for as long as I possibly can. Remaining young at heart is something that was installed in me by my Farther, absolute champion of a man he was. So remaining young at heart for me will always be, just ask my wife who I sometimes torment (in a fun way) so much that she says “my god it’s like being with a 2 year old”

Keep sending friend requests so we can keep building numbers for the “SC2 Seniors” clan (SCIIS) I’ll make sure I accept the friend requests in SC2 and not in the Bizz App, as the Friends in the Blizz App cannot be invited into a Clan.

Need some 50’s players, got to be someone out there. I am already being referred to as the “Ancient One” ROFL, thanks for that ElMeanYo.

Game on………… (Time to kick ass and chew bubble gum)

I'd like to know what games 40+ players enjoyed before they got into the RTS genre. Was a game like M.U.L.E. a big favourite?

Before I got SC1 (one of the first games I had on a CD-ROM, mind you!), I played anything I could get my hands on. A lot of arcade stuff like Airborne Ranger and Test Drive. The Sierra and LucasArts adventure games. Shooters like Wolfenstein3D and Doom. And... Dune II. The latter was my first venture into RTS.

I never heard of MULE before, but it sounds like something I might have enjoyed.

Dustin Browder said the MULE unit called down by the Terran is a tribute//homage to the MULE video game. The game had an active competitive community around it for 20+ years.

I started on Atari back in the early 80s. Both the 2600 console and 800 computer.

So I had access to all kinds of games at a very young age. That eventually evolved into new consoles like the NES & 16-bit. My first PC was in 1991, and for that I mostly played sims like Wing Commander and X-Wing/TIE-Fighter. Eventually DOOM and Quake came along.

I didn't get into RTSs until the original Age of Empires in 1997.

i love this old Atari 2600 game ad. Its 2019 ..

it is incredible what Activision was able to pull off with the 1977 Atari 2600. I think this game came out in 1983.

I'm 31 years old as well

First RTS and first game in color in general would be Command and & Conquer I guess. Release was about 1995 I think. Then AoE and then Starcraft. Also there was a RTS called "Z" Dunno if anyone ever heard of that ^^

Other early games I remember were Diablo 1, some racing game and the all time favorite Tanks (Multiplayer hot seat where everybody hat a tank and you needed to buy some weapon upgrades and then caculate speed and trajetory and wind and shot your friends in the face :D )

Started early with pc gaming, all my older brothers fault

Gaming for me started with Atari, Commodore 64 etc etc. I basically played anything I could get my hands, I was hooked very quickly. Played FPS, RTS and Racing sims mostly and have never really stopped so to speak.

Just a reminder guys, for all SC2 players 30+ any level send friend requests so I can then Invite you to the new Seniors Clan. We both have to be online at the same time for me to Invite you to the Clan is all. Clan is "SC2 Seniors" Tag "SCIIS"
Is it possible for anyone to send a request to join the clan ? or can you only be Invited to a clan ?
Anyone know about that.

Game on.............

Was this Scorched Earth, by any chance? The executable file was named tanks.exe I think. It had napalm, diggers, dirtballs, and nukes, and something called a MIRV which spread out tiny bombs.

Also, I remember there was this totally random "STOP KIBITZING!!!" button. Only later on would I realize that you press it if turns take too long

I loved that game. Must have been 1992 or something?

I remember Scorched Earth. I also enjoyed Civ1, Lemmings, Commander Keen, Castle Wolfenstein, an old RTS called Dune 2 and of course a little later, the original Doom.

I'm closer to 40 then 20 by a good margin, I think I can post here =)

I come from a family of nerds and in the age of qw, my, much older, brother ran one of the better California servers and threw massive lans at his cyber cafes. The very first game of quake I ever saw was an over-the-shoulder view of .... someone I won't name, playing a 1v1 match against a former pro gamer named Thresh.

I had no idea I was witnessing a piece of history. I became addicted. At another smaller lan party a few years later, I caught a glimpse of starcraft. Nobody would play 1v1 quake with me (something I had spent hundreds of hours preparing for) and eventually I got talked into playing that "stupid space war game".

A little while later, I discovered age of empires (late to the party for sure) and thus my life long armor against rpgs and mmo's was forged.

The irony ... is that every single starcraft hero of my youth, is as old or older then nearly everyone posting in this thread.

In the 80s I loved shoot-em-up games, similar to Sky Force (but earlier). My first strategy (?) game was SimCity I guess. Only if you do not count the first Metal Gears which I also loved.
In the early 90's it was all about RPGs for me, especially the Ultima series, up to U7.

I feel like the point of using a metaphore is lost if the metaphor is way grosser than the actual thing.

i think you're mistaking my statement for a euphemism. in that case you'd be correct

Would like to start a new Clan / Group for us older players.
My SC2 player details are: DejaVu#6981
Look forward to hearing from any older players, particularly any in their 50's.
Cheers.

if you have lower league players or does not mind to play team games with lower league players then i'd like to join. But i'm only silverish, so don't want to drag down the skill level.

All good, skill level doesn't matter at ALL. Send friend request and join us, play for fun we must.

Lucky man. My other main hobby is trying to be an 80s guitar shredding hero so in combination it’s broken my wrists

My cousin is 51 and still plays. I sent him a link to this thread. I'm 38 and mostly play Overwatch now. I made it to top 100 in Warcraft III and top 400 in WoL back when they first came out.

38, just got back into sc2 after a hiatus.

Nice to go back down memory lane of 90s games! I played mainly Warcraft 1, dune 2, transport tychoon, colonisation, warlords and some platform and shooter games.

I am expecting gaming to be a common nursery home activity pretty soon! In 50 years, we'll all sit in out wheelchairs cannon rushing and watching Top Gun!

I'm 51 and would like to join. I started playing video games on the original IBM PC green monochrome monitor with Adventure. My first console was the Intellvision. I quit Starcraft2 many years ago due to frustration of losing but recently picked it up. I now just play for fun. I don't care if I lose as long as I'm having fun and trying to learn a little each time on the complexity of the game. The first time a Liberator flew into my base, I was like "what the hell is that thing?" I was originally Plat Terran, Gold Protoss and now Silver Zerg. I've been to 3 Blizzcons and I'm usually one of the older gamers there but young at heart! SC2 tourneys are my biggest thrills at Blizzcons. I play now to keep my fingers nimble and my mind sharp.

That's awesome, finally someone else over 50. Welcome aboard, i'm sure you will have a lot fun in the Clan as all guys are great people.

Look forward to having a game or 2 with you.

Hi Everyone,
When you send your Friend Request, please do so through the SC2 game and not the Blizz app. If it is sent through the Blizz app I cannot invite you to the Clan. I thought it was just me accepting FR's while in the Blizz app, but it seems that if the FR is sent or accepted via the Blizz I can not invite you to the Clan.
So send your FR while in the SC2 game

Also is there anyone who is a current Clan member from the US region that I can promote to an "Officer" so they can Invite new members to the Clan ? As I'm in Australia I'm not always available to do so with the time difference.
It will also mean that players wanting to Join will need to send you a FR as well in order for you to Invite them.

Wait to hear from anyone who is Interested in doing this

This is a fantastic idea DejaVu2!

I'm a 38 year old who occasionally plays, but could never find a group 'old' enough to play with. I played all the original RTS including Command & Conquer, Warcraft 1, Age of Empires, Annihilation etc.

My ID is Martyr#11355, I used to be a Master Protoss in Wings of Liberty but haven't really tried to climb the ladder ranks since.

Is there a discord channel where we can all have a chat and practice with one another and perhaps play some 2s?

Cheers!

This is awesome. I'm older by Starcraft and gamer standards. Early 30's. But I still love to play SC2, even though I find the game EXTREMELY frustrating.

I shall play again one day, in Valhalla possibly.

Trying to get my life in gear, once a few things are confirmed and signed and sealed and I can relax again I can hit the grind once more.

I’m 3 weeks away from hitting 30 and being eligible.

I don’t feel I’m old as a gamer until I have to explain to uninitiated youngsters what I do at a local convention (run a Starcraft tournament)

‘What’s Starcraft is it like World of Warcraft’
‘It’s made by the same people but it’s more like the Warcraft strategy games?’
‘There are other Warcraft games?’
‘Oh ok it’s kind of like Age of Empires or Command and Conquer but in space’
‘What are those?’
‘They’re all real time strategy games’
‘Never heard of that genre’
‘Em ok well do you know MOBAs?’
‘Yeah of course’
‘It’s kind of like a MOBA except you don’t have heroes, you control tons of different units at once. Also instead of creeps you have to build your own from buildings, which you also build, from resources you need to gather with worker units’
‘Sounds boring and complicated’

Sickening really :p Don’t really blame the youth though I think they’d like RTS If they’d been exposed to it, my 6 year old is quite interested and enjoys watching the GSL with me. I’d love to get him playing sometime but it’s harder as young folks aren’t reared on a desktop PC exclusively in the way I was.

The gamers are forgivable, the anime cosplayers who overheard me referencing classic Simpsons and said it was shit and Rick and Morty was way smarterer are beyond redemption.

For the record I do enjoy Rick and Morty, but to deny the greatness of classic Simpsons is absolute sacrilege

Hey guys, I'm 36 (terran diamond 3), 1 kid, very little time to even play, fell into the dark side of mobile hearthstone, but still manage to play my fair share of games every season.

Not sure when new requests will be accepted. I have DejaVu2 in my Bnet friends list and he hasn't logged on in over 3 weeks and I have no way of knowing when he will return. So it may be awhile before any new members are accepted.

You might as well add me too Tubesock. DejaVu didn't for some reason and I plan on laddering again after the new patch is out..

Hola,

I've sent friend requests to samVimes#2872 and Borg#2797, I'll probably won't be able to play till later Sunday evening, so if you accept my requestI can add you to the clan. If not by then, I'll be online Wednesday again.

If DejaVu isn't online I can add also.

Tubesock#1809

Borg, you have to leave Kush apparently.

NerdChill#2861 Hit me up as well. My Starcraft season is around November to May, other times of the year I'm just too busy to play for the most part.

Hawk65#2174 would like to join. 54 years old and been playing SC2 on a very low level for about ten years now.
I'm playing on the european server so I'm not sure if my friens request made it through. (..and if you haven't noticed already, english is not my native tounge so beware of some hilarious spelling mistakes...)

Hmm I'll add you as a friend on my Europe acct. Not sure if the clan is American server only or not. Will be interesting.

Sorry, turns out the clan is only on the American Server.

If you log into the American server anytime add: Tubesock#1809

For some reason I always thought you were way older. Just a "too cool for this generation" vibe. :D

I'm interested in playing some games with you guys. Am 35 and started on original SC2 then brood war. My guilty pleasure is watching SC2 streams - the wife hates it. I'm diamond zerg and would love to do some 2v2 games mic'd up.

I’ll add you. But unfortunately I haven’t seen anyone else on in awhile. But I don’t get to play that much either.

29 years old reporting, I think I qualify as an older SC2 player.

I'm in Diamond, nice to know there are others out there still watching and enjoying this fantastic game and it's predecessor :D

I'm not sure if DejaVu2 is accepting new members into the SCIIS clan anymore or not. Last I checked the you had to be at least 30 years old to be admitted but that's up to DejaVu2 & Tubesock.
