Getting an invite to a premier tournament where you get paid just for showing up simply because you're a popular player seems all kinds of dumb.

Probably invited as GPL champion.

I hope if they keep this event going forward, they would do an actual qualifier so that most people (including myself) won't feel salty about the results.

That Korean lineup is super stacked. That foreign one.....less so. Realistically, I could see Classic/Zest losing to Serral, seeing as both have shown glaring weaknesses in PvZ. Also, Rogue/Dark might lose a ZvZ to Serral, since it's yknow, ZvZ. soO though is a ZvZ god. Don't know much about Cyan so I'll leave him out of this. And of course, Has is Has.

Aside from the above, every single Korean is heavily favored against every single foreigner. In particular, Maru and INnoVation are nigh invincible by virtue of being Korean Terrans. On the flip side, Kelazhur and Scarlett are the weakest links by far. Even recent form in their respective regions favors the Korean team.

Going into the event, I'm expecting to see the Koreans stomp pretty hard. 8-0 is looking very possible, even likely, depending on how the bracket is drawn. Anything is possible of course, but upsets are called upsets for a reason.

So who we got?

Finland, USA, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, China, Germany, Brazil vs South Korea.

Pretty nice spread.

Looking forward to seeing what kind of form Serral is on and how it matches up.

Even doing invites based solely on WCS standings would be better though not ideal. They could do the top 2 players from each race along with the 2 highest ranked players of whoever's left. The only issue there is they'd have to exclude GSL season 3 points from the calculation or you'd unfairly benefit players who played in the earlier groups.

Let's be honest. It's Finland vs South Korea.

Except that's exactly what they do with Blizzcon.

I think it's pretty obvious that Blizz wanted to make this tournament different from just "Blizzcon in summer."

I would have prefered qualifiers too, but it's also obvious to me that Blizzard WANTED the popularity contest involved in some way.

The WCS Global Finals are the top 8 players from Korea and the WCS Circuit. Yes, this year both methods give the same result, but that's not always the case.

Since in gutless Blizzard world, Has is not from Taiwan, why does Cyan get a bid?

sOs had his chance last year and let the team down.

Not really...? He won his game for the team tournament so that's good enough.
