Voting had closed! Winners will be officially announced soon.

An epic showdown is set for August 2nd when eight of South Korea's top StarCraft II progamers will face off against eight of the best players from the WCS Circuit in GSL vs. The World 2018. The 2017 edition of the international extravaganza saw Korea uphold its reputation as StarCraft's adopted homeland, with INnoVation leading a Korean sweep of the top four spots.

The so-called 'foreigners' have spent a year honing their skills and looking forward to their chance at redemption. Much has changed since the last tournament, with Serral emerging as an unstoppable force on the WCS Circuit, more and more Circuit players training in Korea and breaking into the GSL, and Scarlett winning the IEM PyeongChang title on Korean soil. Will it be enough to challenge the daunting might of Korea? Tune in on August 2-5 through AfreecaTV or Twitch to find out.

You can read up on the TEAM WORLD candidates below and vote for which players will join the international all-star team.

Team World: Fan Vote

As the top four players in the WCS Circuit point standings, Serral, SpeCial, Neeb, and ShoWTimE have earned automatic spots on Team World. Three of the remaining players will be decided by the fans.

Click here to vote for Team Korea members as well!

The highest vote recipient of each race from the TeamLiquid.net fan vote will earn a spot on Team World. The eighth and final spot on Team World will go to Cyan, who represents China.
  • You must login with a valid TeamLiquid.net account to vote. You can register here.
  • Voting will close on Tuesday, Jul 17 7:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00).

Team World: Terran

Poll: Team World: Terran Representative

This poll is closed.

de HeRoMaRinE: Once a criminally underrated player, HeRoMaRinE is widely regarded today as one of the most consistent and strong members of the international Terran contingent. Now, it's time for HeRoMaRinE to expand his reach and make his name known in Korea as well.

br Kelazhur: Kelazhur took us all by surprise in 2017, making a meteoric rise that took him all the way to BlizzCon. His momentum may have stalled for the moment, but that's okay; he's already beaten the odds once, and he can certainly find a way to do it again.

nl uThermal: uThermal is a mechanics monster with an Intel Extreme Masters trophy to his name and the potential to win even more silverware. His frenetic style makes him one of the most dizzying and exciting players to watch.

au Seither: A powerhouse within his home region of Australia, a trip to GSL vs. the World would be a cannonball dive into the deep end for Seither. But if Seither can swim with the sharks, he'll prove himself a worthy heir to the legacy of OCE greats.

ca MaSa: Scarlett and Neeb are North America's marquee stars, but MaSa deserves to be mentioned right alongside them. In fact, he's defeated both of them to win the right to represent North America in the past. MaSa is willing to make the most audacious plays in order to get a win, which would serve him well against Korea's elite.

tw ExpecT: There's no hiding ExpecT's underdog status as a Terran player who's little-known outside of his region. But perhaps those without the burden of great expectations are best equipped to perform on this stage, free to enjoy the bright lights and show their true, uninhibited style of play Remember, no upset is too crazy for StarCraft II.

Team World: Zerg

Poll: Team World: Zerg Representative

This poll is closed.

pl Elazer: Elazer came from out of nowhere to reach the BlizzCon semifinals in 2016. Then, he proved it was no fluke by winning a WCS Circuit title in 2017. How does Elazer top all that in 2018? It might all begin with travelling to Seoul to face the best StarCraft II players in the world...

pl Nerchio: You either love or you hate him—Nerchio doesn’t inspire tepid emotions. But the outspoken Polish Zerg has always backed his talk up with his play in the past, and he knows that he hasn't been performing up to spec lately. That's all the better for us: facing a motivated Nerchio is a scary prospect for anyone, GSL or World.

no Snute: Forget about those young, new players on the block; Snute has been a stalwart of the international scene since 2012, fighting the Korean onslaught when those kids were probably still playing in Diamond league. Facing top Koreans and getting a win? That's just another day's work for Snute.

kr TRUE: Having left Korea to compete on the WCS Circuit, an invitation to GSL vs the World would allow TRUE to return home and remind his compatriots of the stylish and electric play that made him such a terror and delight in the past.

de Lambo: Lambo got a taste of glory by making the semifinals of WCS Austin, taking a game off eventual champion Serral along the way. Lambo has plenty of reason to believe the championship was within his grasp, and the fiery Zerg will want more than just a taste of glory in Seoul.

ca Scarlett: IEM PyeongChang champion Scarlett is one of the few 'foreigners' to ever take a StarCraft championship from the Koreans on their home turf. Participation alone isn't enough for a competitor like Scarlett—GSL vs. The World beckons as a stage where she can rise to the top again.

Team World: Protoss

Poll: Team World: Protoss Representative

This poll is closed.

pl MaNa: A beloved veteran, MaNa shocked the world by making the finals of WCS Austin in his eighth year as a StarCraft progamer. The miracle run doesn't have to end just yet—a strong performance at GSL vs. The World would bring him one step closer to BlizzCon.

tw Nice: Nice comes from the overlooked region of Taiwan, but opponents would be foolish to overlook his endless bag of tricks. A combination of standard play and clever tactics makes Nice a dangerous underdog no one wants to face.

tw Has: The other players contending for a spot at GSL vs. The World may be famous, but only Has is infamous. Wielding an arsenal of bizarre and nonsensical cheeses, Has has appalled and entertained audiences for years. You may not respect Has' style, but you will have fun watching his games.

fr DnS: One of the breakout players of WCS 2018, DnS has held the title of France's #1 on more than one occasion. However, DnS has yet to have a truly remarkable tournament run, remaining a player with more potential than achievements. Perhaps a run through the crucible of the GSL will lead him to that career-defining moment.

au Probe: Probe was at the forefront of putting Australian StarCraft on the map in 2017, but perhaps he led the charge a little too well as he's been surpassed by his countrymen in 2018. GSL vs. The World could present a unique opportunity for Probe to outshine his peers once more and put himself back on solid footing in 2018.

fr PtitDrogo: Legacy of the Void seemed to be a pivotal point in PtitDrogo's career, as he won a DreamHack championship off the bat. The quest for another championship has turned into a wild ride for the Frenchman, as he's competed at BlizzCon, been eliminated in the lowest qualifiers, and everything in between. Should the fans deem him worthy, the next stop on that journey might be the GSL studio.

Don't forget to vote for Team Korea members!

It's not letting me vote for the Zerg and Protoss after I voted for Terran. It thinks I'm answering the same poll.

The fact that the 7th best Zerg in the WCS Circuit is almost certainly guaranteed a slot is why this tournament is a joke.

I'm sad that Clem and Reynor aren't options. They don't deserve bids based on performances in WCS Circuit events, but this is a popularity contest rather than a test of skill, so might as well go all out.

I mean Kelazhur was the only one to win last time around in the teams competition, he deserves to defend his spot.

For the Zerg it's really hard to pick between Scarlett, Nerchio and Snute. But I think style wise, Nerchio will have a bigger advantage for a KO bracket.

For Protoss, I love Mana's unpredictable style.

Super tough call for Zerg, and I'd be okay with Snute or one of the Polish Zergs, but at the end of the day, I gotta go with
(Z)Scarlett. She earned it with IEM Pyongchang.

(T)Kelazhur for Terran (would be fine with (T)MaSa instead), (P)MaNa for Protoss (would enjoy (P)Has otherwise).

In other news though, Serral, Special, Neeb, and Showtime are SUCH an epic starting lineup, and glad we have Cyan bringing in the views too, I guess.
I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)

There is no chance that Scarlett doesn't win this vote. I don't really care for the Terran/toss players so I will probably choose someone random.
Banned for saying "zerg players are by far the biggest whiners in sc2 history" despite the fact that this forum is full of such posts about Terrans. Foreigner Elitists in control!

For Terrans, HEROMARINE, obviously.
For Zerg I'll pick rey-, oh wait. Well gonna go with Lambo then after his WCS Austin performance.
For Protoss, the sane choice would probably be DnS, but I'll go with Has for the madness

Voted for the Liquid boys!

Vote with your heart, but if you are hesitant with who to vote for Protoss may I suggest this Polish guy who's been in the Starcraft scene from the very beggining and would love to have a chance to travel to Korea once again just like in 2012. I promise you exciting matches. Pretty please!

(T)uThermal, (Z)Elazer and (P)MaNa

but of course Scarlett will win Zerg vote no matter what, even if she's playing like complete garbage lately, because of fanboys

I am a Scarlett fan, but I really don't get this vote considering her form :/.

Went with Big Gabe, Mana and am still not sure between Elazer/Nerchio/Lambo.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

I’m hoping Scarlett can silence the haters at WCS Valencia.
I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)

Gotta go with BigPowerZerg, Kelazhur, and Has. Torn on the Protoss vote, I figured why not go for a wild one.

GLGL to everybody of course, looking forward to it all.

I voted for heromarine, lambo, mana. Reynor and Soul would have been good options. I dont trust in uThermal's mental capacity under stress, he seems to whine on twitter after losing and for me that seems weak

Pretty sure if he gets voted in as terran he isn't allowed to raceswitch.

Honestly, if Scarlett has more WCS Korea points than WCS Circuit, shouldn't she count as a GSL player?

aiaiai i love how this tournament always brings the haters out of the woodwork. there are 2 freaking tournaments per year that use voting rather than qualifiers (nation wars and this), do you guys really have to repeat the same dumb complaints over and over again instead of enjoying the other 269 tournaments that do it your way and letting these 2 be the way they are!?

the same goes for every tournament where scarlett is involved. yes, she is very up and down, we get it. she might make a semifinal run or bomb out 0:3 in the first round, both are very possible. speculation about which one will come true is pretty random and pointless though. shes a fan favorite and will get voted in, deal with it. i personally feel that lambo currently deserves the spot the most, his austin run backed up by the best result of any foreigner at hsc (with a little bit of group / bracket luck) makes him a pretty clear #2 foreign zerg behind serral imo

eSports should not have tournaments based on popularity rather than merit. They doubly shouldn't be put on by the company who made the game. They triply shouldn't have the 5th highest prize pool of the year.

A runoff vote would be nice if a player gets a plurality but not a majority. Would maybe let voters split among quality players defeat a popular player.

While I sympathize, the fact is that the guys with the money write the rules. Blizzard writes the checks, so if Blizzard likes popularity polls, that's the way it's going to be.

Those of us who value merit over popularity can take pleasure in watching the popular-but-inferior players getting stomped by the players who actually deserve to be there. That much is free (and satisfying) entertainment.

I'm really confused by the zerg votes. Scarlett is cool and very good of course, but based on recent results she doesn't seem to be in top form right now. Same goes for snute. And even Elazer isn't as successful as Lambo lately who showed the most promising games in WCS Austin and Homestory Cup.
But ok, in the end we don't know how anyone of them will perform at the actual event - they're all capable to go full beast mode
Furthermore, I consider that some kind of Code A must be reestablished.

This is the problem with community votes: it's a popularity contest and not based on actual form/results/skill.

For myself, I voted for Scarlett because every now and then she plays at a peak level that's higher than Elazer, and I'd say higher than Snute as well. No doubt Snute and Elazer are both far more consistent than her, but in WCS vs The World, we've got a great 4 players already who are consistent (and Serral is both consistent and at an incredible peak), so I picked Scarlett to give her another chance for something like IEM Pyongchang.

Scarlett won IEM PyeongChang with sOs and Zest in the tournament. Scarlett also got into the Round of 8 at GSL, something that I don't think Elazer has done and definitely not Lambo. Don't forget that she beat Innovation along the way to get there. And this happened this year for Scarlett. If you're talking about the past, Scarlett schooled Polt at Red Bull Battle Grounds in 2014, and Polt was considered a top 5 Terran (including Koreans) back in 2014.

She's just not consistent. But if Scarlett is playing her best, she can take games off the Koreans. She has a higher skill ceiling than both Elazer and Lambo.

No offense to Elazer and Lambo, but I would like to see them make the Round of 8 in GSL (Elazer is my 2nd choice after Scarlett). And I would like to see them get into the Round of 8 of the GSL while beating Innovation and Zest on the way there (if you swap Elazer or Lambo in Scarlett's place in GSL Season 1, I don't think Elazer or Lambo can beat both Innovation and Zest in the "group of death" to get to the Round of 8).

If you're basing Scarlett on the last 2 months, then yeah, she hasn't had great results recently. But if you are basing her on this year, she has had a great first half of the year. She won IEM PyeongChang and she made the Round of 8 at GSL.

The Round of 8 at GSL is a nice accomplishment. It's the furthest that a foreigner has achieved for some time (I think the last time a foreigner got that far was Naniwa). I would like to see Elazer or Lambo make the Round of 8 at GSL.

nice reasoning mate, i still dont see the problem with having 2 of these a year. 4 invites based on wcs points + 4 votes is really nothing to get upset about. also every wcs stop, every gsl, wcs global finals, iem katowice & pyeongchang and wesg have a higher prizepool, so its rank ~12 in that regard, not 5. only stuff like super tournaments and hsc have less money on the line

I decided to go with HeroMarine over uThermal because of uThermal playing Protoss at HSC. To me it indicates he is not fully committed to practising Terran and I'd rather pick someone who is. Of course I could be wrong, but I have to make my decision with limited information.

scarlett tried 1920 times in gsl, bound to go to gsl ro8 once, espeically now as the koreans aren't immortal anymore. elazer got 2nd at blizzcon. way bigger achievement.

that being said, scarlett and elazer are not in form lately, i kinda see lambo on the same level right now. same with nerchio and reynor. they are the zergs that follow god serral

I hope people pick Elazer or Lambo over Scarlett. They have actual skills

Why wouldnt you mention that all of that was cheesed and that is patched by now? You also forgot to mention that she dropped out of groups in Leipzig. Super early GG's indicate a rather bad work ethic. And still people cant stop spamming those votes. Not sure what people see in here. She doesnt even seem to care that much

Don't worry, you didn't miss it.

He got to RO4 in 2016 by beating Solar, Showtime and Nerchio. Then got 3-0'd by Dark.

He had to beat 1 korean in ZvZ to get there. By the way: He placed 3-4

I voted for Kelazhur because he did well last time, and thus deserves the spot again in my book. Z and P votes were a lot harder to choose for me though. Had Reynor been one of the candidates I would have given my vote to him, but alas. After a while I ended up prioritizing consistency and experience with my Z choice, leaving me to pick between Snute and Nerchio. In the end I chose Nerchio as I feel like he's been doing slightly better lately. When it came to Protosses it was also a toss-up (pun lol) between Has and MaNa. Ended up giving my vote to the liquid-boi.

Well, now I'm looking quite dumb ^^
Furthermore, I consider that some kind of Code A must be reestablished.

The voting for this opening right before a WCS Circuit event is an absolute monstrosity. Has at least ties MaNa's run to the finals and his chances of winning the vote are minuscule considering how much of a lead MaNa started with. Maybe he gets in as the highest vote getting 2nd place player, but that's still tough.

Don't think Has was involved in getting the chinese slot, afaik since Has is taiwanese he goes through the normal voting system.

In the last three years, has gave us many fun games, but never had such that great time like this time.
So many people might said that has could just plays fun games and he couldn't win.
This time, I could say that has, now he has not only great strategy, but also solid macro and micro skill !
I had vote for has, because he has better strategy and a nice ability to win.
good luck for has

you cant beat the hype train i guess ... think Has will made is

Although i think it's the worse choice compared to Mana ... don't forget, Has plays a lot of korean ladder, so i think his plays are much more known in the korean scene than they have been in EU/NA ... and yeah, it was a miracle run this time in Valencia, but i doubt it's something he is able to repeat

We will see ... in the end it will be other players anyways wo can maybe win against koreans (Serral, Scarlett, Neeb, Showtime, Special)

Can't believe that Has surpassed Mana who was like 1k votes ahead. Seems like few individuals created bunch of new accounts to spam votes.

That's pretty a dishonest thing to say that people created accounts to spam votes. Maybe consider Has had a great run at WCS and gained a lot of new fans. If you were on Twitch channel for the finals of WCS, you would know most of the channel were cheering for Has.

80000 people watched Has meme himself into the finals, the amount of votes he gained isn't unlikely. Balances out having a liquid player in the polls on their own site.

Look. I'm sure most of the people who voted AFTER Valencia are have been impressed by Has, that's why they voted for Has. Who would not love a guy who does weird plays and cheeses and makes it in the finals for the first time?

For sure that he's a worse choice than MaNa (who is a good player) , but he's entertaining. He may not have won over Serral but not only he's won a map over him, but he also won the hearts of many fans who are in Valencia live or in Twitch, in which the reason why the viewers reached 55k+ viewers is probably Has.

Believe it or not, Has now has many fans after his run in Valencia.

Guys, watch the Khelazur votes. I am 99% sure that somebody has a Bot working on this. The votes/time are way to linear.
And there is no real reason why his votes are suddenly exploding like this

Yes, I am refreshing the page from time to time and always there are some votes more. Very linear. That's not fair play

I hope the votes for Kelazhur get checked, his votes skyrocked, even though he was promoted (don't know if that's even true) I doubt that he can get that much votes that quick, looks a bit like botting to me...

Kelazhur's vote poll is being botted. He gained votes all throughout the day at a completely linear rate after being way behind in the poll all throughout. He was at around 700 votes and now he's at 2000. He did have someone advertise for him, but that didn't have this large of an effect and the effect that precisely 1 vote adds per minute is likely indication of a bot. Someone from TL staff please analyse that!

I understand that Khelazur got a lot of votes with the call out but lets do some maths: even if all the 470 people who liked the tweet voted for Khelazur which is already unlikely since there most of these people doesn't have a liquipedia account, there are still 500 votes missing. It still looks shady for me.

I think the best way to really represent what the starcraft 2 community wants, is to make the need that an account should be a week old before being able to vote as another post already suggested. The poll was basically decided by the LoL and not the Starcraft 2 community even if everything is legit.

why are you guys being so ignorant?

he got promoted by this tweet, which casters, proplayers and even the news (brazilian espn) retweeted, plus it was posted on Ilha da Macacada group (facebook) which has more than 1 million people and the topic is, at every second, getting upvoted so they can vote on kelazhur

you guys can blame the system all you want (i agree it should be based on accounts longer than one day), but if anything, the votes are legit

Normally I would agree. Unfortunately though a lot of Blizzard forum users and screddit users likely created accounts to vote as well. So that makes it tricky. It should be possible to check if all these votes came the same IP address though maybe? Cause yeah the Kelazhur surge is pretty crazy...

as explained, a lot of Brazilian streamers tweeted and a huge group on facebook promoted the poll, it's not a surprise that he got so many votes, the post on the group got around 2k likes in under an hour...

Hey guys, stop being mean. Kelazhur is a great player and the poll has no restriction about the game that the user likes. Learn to lose, it hurts, it cries, but it passes.

Kelazhur go, your favorite player may not, but it's all okay.

The cry is free.

I hope next year this is not by fan vote anymore. I mean, I like it, but it ends up being pretty unfair to some players that maybe aren't that popular.

I hope we get the best of the best of the foreign scene against korea's best.

For example, Kelazhur, I love the guy! But he already was in GSL vs The World, last year... and his 2018 hasn't been nearly as good as uThermal's 2018! Its unfair!

guys, now even Fallen(one of the most popular esports players in the world) asked to help Kelazhur, damn its good to have friends.

Kelazhur said in the post that it was impossible to win since the difference was big and asked his fans to vote for Uthermal now, but some popular guys in Brasil decided to not give up and asked in big facebook groups to vote for him and now popular esports figures are helping too like Fallen(who kinda sponsors him) and Taco.

Honestly, I'm very happy, Kelazhur results don't tell the whole story, I mean he only lost to finalists and champions in his WCS runs, he got super unlucky.

Look guys, you can't be supportive of the idea of voting people in and then be mad that someone gets more votes and start insulting the quality of the player.

If Blizz really wanted this tournament to be "the best foreigners" vs "the best Koreans" we would either be doing this as a straight seeding system (which is EXACTLY what Blizzcon does and it's obvious Blizz doesn't want this to be a second Blizzcon) or we would be doing open qualifiers for it.

This popularity aspect is part of what Blizzard designed the tournament to be. You can disagree with that if you want, but that means you hate the idea of having the fan poll in the first place.

So pick one. You're either for the poll or you're not. You can't be for the poll and against the results.

To be fair, if they tune into the tournament because Kelazhur wins, then they will be at least a small part of the community

Besides isn't one of our goals AS a community to GROW our community?

If a bunch of Brazilians that otherwise wouldn't care about this tournament stop to watch now because they found about it through League streamers then isn't that a GOOD thing?

Seriously guys, if Kelazhur is winning because he's popular then he's accomplishing what the poll is meant to accomplish.

Kelazhur isn't that popular, he's getting help from someone who is. Also Blizzard should pay salary for people who they make do marketing for them, not trick them to do it for free.

Let me rephrase that then.

BRAZILLIANS are popular. and Brazillians are voting one of their own into the tournament.

That's the entire point of having the fan poll. You're just going to have to accept it.

I'm a big believer in qualifiers. I think the only two people that shouldn't have to earn their spot in this tournament are Serral and Maru and that's because they are Code S and WCS Champs. You could make an argument that Stats doesn't either because of Super Tournament but then you'd have to make the same call for Scarlett for IEM Pyeongchang. So it's simpler if only those two tournaments mattered.

But... Blizz wants this popularity aspect attached to the tournament, and most likely what's happening with Kelazhur is making them super excited because it means that SC2 is being talked about and shared in circles that would otherwise ignore it.

You're right, to them it's free marketing. But they're the ones sponsoring the tournament so they can run it however they want.

As long as I get my Maru vs Serral dream, I don't really care about the rest.

I dunno why people are complaining. Blizz decided it was a popularity contest, so the most popular players will get in. Brazil's esport fans are some of the most passionate.

Although Kela going from being down 900 to being up 2700 is hilarious
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

Well, I'm a brazilian and Starcraft player since the Brood War era, though I did create an account here just to vote for Kelazhur as well, so I think that the new account restrictions as some are suggesting are more to teamliquid community participation rather than the Starcraft one. Also as it's stated too the uprising was due to popular esports figures who supported him, and if people cared enough to come here vote maybe they will give Starcraft a chance, it's free to play now after all, so is it bad?

Besides, if we are talking about how ethical this is, isn't a poll being hold on teamliquid forum with teamliquid players involved (uThermal, Snute and MaNa) for a premier sponsored by blizzard quite unethical as well? (Just to clarify, I do admire all teamliquid work for Starcraft, I don't doubt their fairness on this).

If I could suggest something so it would really be for the community I would have it to be voted on a site made by blizzard and requiring battlenet verification, making a propaganda about it on the battlenet client and in-game main screen and all solved, no bias and the players community voting. (Even more if you make a check validation about how long Starcraft was added to the account voting).

I'm sure he got a lot of fans after Valencia, but also I saw in some taiwanese sc2 FB group, that some taiwanese people are creating new accounts and clearing their cookies to vote multiple times.

Promotion like what Kelazhur got is part of the fanvote system, if someone's not okay with it complain about the system not the player.

Here's the thing, though, I look at the total number of votes that are in the T category, and they are about 3000 more votes for T (and likely Kelazhur) than any other race. What this tells me is that the people who are voting for Kelazhur are voting because it's Kelazhur rather than them being part of the community.

The slightly worrisome part about this is that because they're only going for Kelazhur as opposed to the other players, it's showing that they don't care about who gets the vote in the other categories. This means that they are not likely part of the SC2 community. Now, we want to be welcoming to all people, but we really don't want people who are not part of our community and who have no intention of being part of our community to influence things in the SC2 community.

Of course, it's possible that the people who vote for Kelazhur will then become part of the SC2 community, but I can understand if people feel uneasy if a lot of the people who voted for him won't become part of our community.

In an extreme example, it's like me saying that I don't want outsiders to vote in the Canadian election. I'm happy if they're interested in Canadian politics and if they eventually become Canadian citizens, but I don't really want them, if they aren't part of Canada, to vote in our elections.

Of course, this is a public poll and not one controlled by a political entity, but I can understand if this is a worry people have.

You guys are so freaking immature. All this hating behavior under the poll isn't about how fair Kelazhur victory is, but about whether or not to accept the defeat of you favorite player. It's pathetic.

It does not matter if fans vote for Kelazhur because it's the "Brazilian" Kelazhur and don't care about the other races. It does not matter whether or not they want to integrate into the community.

By the way, who will want to be integrated into a toxic and childlike community like this, who wants to choose who can or should not be part of your club?

Grow, improve, be less. This kind of behavior just moves away that who could be interested in the game, and about being part of the community.

Blizzard said last event:
*We are aware that voting required a US StarCraft II Character ID to participate, and we very actively pushed pro-active messaging to make sure users knew how to contribute to polls. For future fan voting events, we will make ease of participation for global fans a top priority.

If the intention was that only the community participates, it would not have changed. And this is a FAN Voting Event
I understand that some people may be upset, but it will pass.

Are people really butthurt that some people gets more votes than other in a voting system ?

Man they got Fallen and Taco to vote for Khalazur ok good. But really really. The terra representative would not even get a map out of Koreans so it doesn't matter.

And khelazur is not a bad non korean player on top of that

Starcraft is being talked about in other circles that otherwise wouldn't give a shim for our beloved game.

Kelazhur is a great guy and very active in social medias. We are probably gaining some future members in the community, which is good in terms of viewership and, therefore, for sponsorship and for prizes for players, quality of games etc.

Kelazhur is also the only player to have won a match in GsL vs the world last year. And his results the last 2 WCS circuits don't tell the level of his actual game, he lost to Serral (who hasn't) and went 2x3 against Has (who won 2x1 against Special)... So if you're worried about him being the chosen one, don't be. He's a very good choice, for both game quality and comunity growth.

I think having outside people voting is not all that bad.

I mean, if it brings in more Brazilian and Taiwanese viewers, the better.

If even a few thousand of them stay, that's a big win.

If Blizzard really wanted the best, they would have done a qualifier. And in part the 4 selected from wcs points it's just that.

If the Brazillian viewers show up to watch GSL vs the World, then it's worth having all the votes for Kelazhur. If there is no significant boost to the viewing numbers, then it's unfortunate that other players lost out because of the sudden surge in votes for Kelazhur.

I suspect because some of the Brazillians went out of their way to sign up for a TL account, that many of them will tune it at least to watch Kelazhur.

Growing the SC2 community is always a good thing. It's unfortunate for HeroMarine and UThermal if they miss out. But you need to look at this from the longer term perspective. If the SC2 community grows, that means more sponsors, and more funding for professional players. If you want to watch pro SC2, it's important that SC2 viewership grows and the community grows. Otherwise, sponsors will leave, there will be less tournaments organized, and pro players will retire because they can't make enough money.

If SC2 viewership keeps shrinking, there won't be a pro scene anymore. So let's see if the Brazillian viewers tune in.

(Disclaimer: I voted for HeroMarine and not Kelazhur, but if there is an increase in Brazillian viewership, I'm fine with it)

Damn, why are you guys so salty? The poll was open for any fan to vote, it wasn't explicitly for SC2 fans to vote. Besides I agree with other comments that this might bring a bit more attention into sc2 community and the world vs korea showdown.
At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure the world team will be well represented with any of the players selected.

The only problem I have with the vote raiding is if 9th-16th place still offers prize money like last year. Players should at least have to fight for their piece of the pie. Other than that vote to your heart's content, this is literally a popularity contest so don't cry when it doesn't go your way.

It is quite of a shame. The Austin brackets as well as the Valencia brackets were dominated by the EU region players, but none of them (apart for those who go by WCS points) will get to GSL vs The World apart for Serral and ShowTime.

well, this vote turned into even bigger shitshow(pardon my french) than I expected.

anyone who thinks tournament will get more viewers from Brazil/Taiwan because of the additional votes is naive.
this isn't even a popularity contest anymore - that was won by Scarlett among zergs which I won't comment further.

this influx from Brazil turned entire voting into circus, it's not even about who's popular, but who knows people with more influence and bigger reach...

and now World will send out 3 players - terran that is out of form, zerg that is out of form and protoss that is insane and will hardly show such performance again - but can't believe out of those three Has is the most reasonable vote...

I don't think Has and Scarlett are unreasonable choices.
Has has a better WCS performance than any non-seeded Protoss except Mana who had the same result but I think Has is more likely to score an upset.
Scarlett is the 2nd most succesful foreign Zerg this year without competition. Even though she's in a bit of a slump right now, no other Zerg has showed a strong enough performance to make me think he deserves it over her.
The only unreasonable vote is Kelazhur.

Don't think Has was involved in getting the chinese slot, afaik since Has is taiwanese he goes through the normal voting system.

Yeah, looks like WCS is still pretty inconsistent with the whole Taiwan/Taipei mess.

how is it inconsistent? Has is from Taiwan and plays Taiwanese qualifiers, the China slot is for the winner of the GPL or whatever its called where only Chinese players can participate. WCS quals and stuff like that with regional qualifiers have been working like that for 2-3 years, if not even before that.

I have mixed feelings about it all, but ultimately at this point, I think we should accept the result.

I'm reminded of the 2016 All-Stars Hockey game. Here's a write up of the player who the fans voted in as sort of a troll vote:

https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/articles/a-guy-like-me

Then, this happened:

https://www.nhl.com/news/john-scott-all-star-mvp/c-278122638

The man rose to the occasion like no other. He absolutely put every one of his doubters in their place and reminded us all of why we have fan votes in the first place. He scored two goals in the championship game and was awarded the MVP. Bringing home a nice paycheck which helped a lot what with his pregnant wife.

The point is, this tournament isn't over till it's over, and Kelazhur has a right to be able to show us he deserves to be there.
I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)

Thats the problem, he has not the right to show us. If there would have been a qualifier and he won it, then. He gets votes just because he is brazilian, from people that dont even care about sc2, this is just a social media campaign in brazil from CSGO pro gamers, from the brazilian eSports community, people just click on the link, login with twitter, vote for him, thats it life goes on, they dont care about the tournament.

Thats the sad truth and every sc2 fan should be sad about this, because this vote destroys the chances for the WORLD against GSL, to show the koreans what we can offer. So if you really care about SC2 and are excited about GSL against the WORLD you cant be happy about this.

So CSGO Fans can decide which SC2 Player we will see at a SC2 event? Sounds legit ... not.

Many people voted for Kelazhur,if they watch GvW live or VODs,it is still OK.
Let us wait for view numbers of Portuguese cast channel.
Maybe view numbers is not real, length of viewing time may also be fake.
WTF,what to do?
Betrayed, forgotten, abandoned.

Funny thing is that both HeroMarine and uThermal were advertised for people outside the Starcraft community, being shown on twitter with 92k and 358k followers of their teams. Assuming a small % of those people engaged to vote for them indeed the current result would be different, but why didn't happen?

Kelazhur himself was quite hopeless to go and asked people to vote uThermal instead on his Facebook. He's truly a nice guy and the brazilian esport community engaged for him. It's as simple as that.

HeroMarine:

uThermal:

Obviously if it was up to the community to decide should have been done way differently. On game client as I said before, requiring just to have Starcraft 2 on the account for longer than a month before the poll start. Translated to all languages so people who doesn't speak English but play the game and watch it can vote too.

well, this vote turned into even bigger shitshow(pardon my french) than I expected.

anyone who thinks tournament will get more viewers from Brazil/Taiwan because of the additional votes is naive.
this isn't even a popularity contest anymore - that was won by Scarlett among zergs which I won't comment further.

this influx from Brazil turned entire voting into circus, it's not even about who's popular, but who knows people with more influence and bigger reach...

and now World will send out 3 players - terran that is out of form, zerg that is out of form and protoss that is insane and will hardly show such performance again - but can't believe out of those three Has is the most reasonable vote...

The taiwanese twitch stream peaked at 11.4k during WCS Valencia with Has in the finals so yes Has brought in more viewers.

https://www.fuzic.nl/sessions/4518923/

The latest season of copa america had a 4.6k peak for the Brazilian portuguese stream.

There are plenty of people behind these players. You can't say that none of so called the 'brigade voters' will watch the match.

Shame that the best foreign Terran (Heromarine) gets kicked out by Kelazhur, a player who, IMO, looks sloppy even when he wins, and hasn't even been relevant for more than a year.

Is HeroMarine really the best foreign terran? Both him, uthermal, and special seem quite close. But I'd give the edge to SpeCial because he's been performing for much longer.

I have seen multiple games today where Mana tried to cheese vs Heroamrine. He failed so hard, it was pathetic.

I mean a vote sucks anyway, now that Kelagod got the support of some famous non-sc2 people it might suck a tiny bit more, but overall it doesn't change much imo. TL could also get their LoL team to tweet about this or mouz their CS squad, but in the end the brazilian esports scene seems more tight-knit and passionate.

We can all agree that we all want qualifiers. Everything else will always be unfair. Maybe next year.

Honestly this thread is so embarassing. Honestly it is. You guys call yourselves Starcraft fans and then will immediately switch gears to shit on a player just because he's winning a popular vote.

Grow up. If you don't like the vote in system let Blizzard know about it and tell them you'd rather have qualifiers next year. Stop shitting on the players winning the votes just because they don't play the way you like or come from a country you want them to come from.

Seriously. Grow up.

I mean if it's all about the show and making it a popularity contest, that's fine. The part where it gets annoying for me is when I look at the prize pool of GSL vs the World last year. Almost 100,000 $ on the line in a tournament where half the players are in based solely on popular appeal.

If they want to keep GSL vs the World the way it is, vote and everything, I'd rather they cut down the prize pool for the 1v1 competition and make another true Global event happen. Though we're already short one of those compared to last year.

Is there a place or a line where the way the vote works is stated? I mean, if there is, I couldn't see it.
I couldn't see any indication about how the vote works, for example something like:
"You can express 3 preferences, 1 for each race. To declare your vote you will have to write a comment on this post".
I think you should had this somewhere, it would make everything clearer and simpler.
If such "rules" are already explained somewhere and I've missed them, my bad.

Don't think Has was involved in getting the chinese slot, afaik since Has is taiwanese he goes through the normal voting system.

Yeah, looks like WCS is still pretty inconsistent with the whole Taiwan/Taipei mess.

how is it inconsistent?

They call it "Chinese Taipei" to cater to China but treat it as a separate WCS region

i dont see how not trying to get involved in those specific politics, especially as taiwan isnt officially recognized by the US anyway afaik, makes this inconsistent. it has a seperate name and is a seperate region and, as i said before, it has been like this for a long time if not forever, so i dont see any inconsistency whatsoever.

It's probably not possible to start a similar campaign for Heromarine because we don't have this "yeah, we could do it at least once - german pride!"-situation. Infact germany is quite successful in esports and in sports overall, so seeing a german player in GSL vs. the world wouldn't be such a huge thing (for big Gabe it would be, of course). I mean, we already have Showtime
Furthermore, I consider that some kind of Code A must be reestablished.

Thank you, Sir.

Last year many complained and suggested the blizzard that the votes should be open to everyone, after all it was a Fan Voting Event.

Official Statement from Blizzard (last year):

We are aware that voting required a US StarCraft II Character ID to participate, and we very actively pushed pro-active messaging to make sure users knew how to contribute to polls. For future fan voting events, we will make ease of participation for global fans a top priority.

What I find most interesting is that until few days ago no one was complaining about the voting system. There was no post about injustice in the selection of players or if who could vote would be just starcraft members x days / post. Or worse, how to be sure who voted will watch the match.

And it's not just about Kelazhur, there are people complaining about the way Has plays. He managed to reach the final and yet some people try to disqualify him. Although they are few people, but they are noisy... It is very sad and a little insane, to see how some say they are fans and treat the players that way.

I wasn't complaining because even though I didn't like the results, they at least made sense. I want Elazer to win, but Scarlett is the more popular player so she wins the popularity contest. It sucks for me, but people who want to see Scarlett play in the tourney get what they want so I'm happy for them at least.

Kelazhur winning doesn't make sense to me. I'll feel annoyed watching him play at the event because I'll feel the people who voted for him forced this on me and meanwhile they're playing or watching CSGO or Fortnite or whatever other game they enjoy.

I find it funny that you're separating Scarlett and Kelazhur when there is literally no difference between them,

In this poll in this particular poll, they are more popular than the guy you want.

That's just a truth you need to accept.

Here's another truth you need to accept.

It doesn't matter WHO is voting for them to get into the tournament. That's not how democracy works. The minute you start criticizing WHO is voting in an online poll, what you are ACTUALLY saying is, "I only respect the opinion of certain kinds of people."

That's not what this is about.

You don't understand the problem. Not Kelazhur is more popular than Uthermal or Heromarine, Fallen and the other brazilian e-sport players are more popular. That's the reason why we are complaining. The poll was not decided by the community but by guys who had and have no clue about anything going on in Starcraft 2.

I think there's a huge difference. Scarlett is a very popular player and gets a lot of votes from her fans. Even though I don't want her to win, at least her fans get to watch her play at the event.

Kelazhur wins by getting a ton of votes from people who don't give a shit about starcraft and I assume most or a large portion won't watch the event at all.

I wont bother comment about the democracy side of it or the system or how fair it is, I'm just saying this from my perspective as a viewer.

I'm sorry for you and respect your opinion, but the fan voting event is open to everyone. If Blizzard did not want it that way, it would have kept the old format. If Blizz wanted something more competitive he would have chosen the players through a tournament.

I am not saying that your case, but it is extremely unfair with players being accused of using bots, lacking the qualifications and skills to play in this tournament among many other things. This revealed a part of the community that is toxic and I thought we had already passed this stage and it would be great for SC2 to gain more visibility because it is an excellent game.

A simple proof of this is that the Brazilian SC2 community on Facebook has increased thanks to this disclosure. I'm happy for this.

i voted for kelazhur earlier on. i dont blame him at all how things developed. im fine with this beeing a popular vote. Nevertheless i think only starcraft interessted poeple should be allowed to vote. and no "grow up" shit will change that. talking about democracy you should consider, that foreign people are also not allowed to vote in a political election. and that's for a good reason. i guess most of the vote came from people who are foreigners to the starcraft scene.
and yes, in this case i only repect the opinion of people who are somehow interested in starcraft.

The voting system was supposed to get the most popular players to the event. Kelazhur isn't the most popular foreign terran, before the tweets he was well behind Heromarine and Uthermal. He surpassed them because popular guys advertised for him not because he himself is that popular.
It's not about hating on Kelazhur, it's that based on popularity (which this was about) he shouldn't get in over the other 2 terrans.

Could we get in common ground that comparing a Global Fan Voting Event with political elections is a bit radical?

So the problem is the "foreigners"? Does anyone outside this community deserve to have their vote respected? Again, even if it is a Global Fan Voting Event...

Just to make things clear, someone here complained about uThermal or HeRoMaRinE the same way they are doing with the kelazhur, or even the Has? I think not.

I want to make it clear that I'm not against it, but both players had their organizations asking votes for them.

We are talking about Teamliquid which is a very respected organizations with more than 358k followers on twitter, which has teams and is directly linked with games like SC2, Hearthstone, League of Legends, CS, DOTA, Street Fighter, PUBG, Clash Royal and others
[image loading]

Mousesports is another institution with more 92k followers and that has teams to Fornite, PUBG, CS, Smite, SC2, League of Legends, Rainbow Six Sieges and others.

Did any of you question whether those who voted for them were "pure" members of the SC2 community? Did you do several post's as you thought it unfair? Did any of you create a post explaining how unfair it was to ask for votes that could come from others who have no legitimate interest in SC2?

Sorry for the long post (and my english, is not my native language), but I'm trying to understand your opinion. Because it seems a little hypocritical so far.

Anyone interested enough to vote, regardless of whether they've been longtime viewers, is a good vote. More new viewers would be a good thing.

I'm not shaking with rage or anything, but I do think it's a shame that these SC2-specific votes can be so heavily influenced by the people that don't watch.

My point of view is this: It's good for the scene if the outside voters actually watch and gain interest in SC2 as a result. It's bad for the scene if a crowd of people comes and votes for whoever their organization told them to vote for and then leaves - the actual fan favorite players don't make it in and people who are already SC2 fans lose some interest.

Pulling numbers out of my ass here, but I'd be surprised even if 10% of the BR Kelazhur voters showed up on game day.

SMH people say kelazhur is not popular.

Maybe not on TL and Reddit. These two websites are completely euro/us centric. Yeah no wonder an SA player is not popular here.

Even if I voted for him, I still would support and cheer any player that would had won.

I would guess so, too. At least from the "vote train" (he had about 500 i think? "real" fan (ppl who actually watch sc2) votes before, these ppl will most likely watch).
If it turns out i'm wrong und brazil viewership will increase heavily during GSL vs. the world i would be happy of course ... but i just don't see this coming.
Starcraft community is smaller compared to cs:go, LoL and so on ... so yeah, things like this can happen. As i said earlier, hopefully blizzard will learn something from it for upcoming events.

I remember the cast from Valencia before the match HeroMarine against uThermal, when the Caster Desk was talking about the importance of that match, including the gsl vs. the world voting, where it was a close race between the two of them. What an irony
Would like it if the would make fun of "votings" like this in the future. But maybe that's to ballsy for an official Blizzard Event ...

In the end you have to accept the result, of course. But that doesn't mean you have to like it, especially under such cirmumstances. I personally would have preferred Mana .. but i can totally understand that Has' Valencia success und playstyle created a hype train for him. Cause that hype train came from fans of the scene.
Kela's votes didn't, it's as simple as that. (and yeah, it was legal and totally allowed with this voting mechanism ... i don't deny that although i would argue the legit part ...).
And no matter how many people will come up with such precious arguments like "grow up!" etc. ... that's simply a fact nobody can deny.

It is toxuc when people make claims about bots and the voting system that are simply personal opinions. If Kelazhur can`t win the voting why is his name there? Did he get votes from other sources? Sure. However, calling that unfair when the voting is held in teamliquid with TL players involved is batlant hypocrisy.

Good for Kelazhur for rallying his national esports compatriots. Doesn't mean I have to root for him. Honestly I hope he gets completely crushed and bm'd, which is likely as I don't think his condition is anywhere close to where it was last year or especially 2016. I didn't vote for Heromarine or Uthermal either.

I don't want be that guy, but the terran vote seems off, it doesn't have to be, but it seems like it with kelazhur alone having as many votes as the whole zerg poll. But if it is legit congratulations kelazhur.

Probably so China doesn't completely hijack the polls and cause landslide victories for their players.

Let's summarize:
Stuff like Khelazurs vote push can happen in such a vote and there is nobody to blame about it but it's still understandable that the outcome is considered as unfair by many because of not being representative of popularity within the SC2-Community or of sucess in the game itself.
Furthermore, I consider that some kind of Code A must be reestablished.

I think this is intended to select the players who get more votes, and it is exactly what happened.
If they are then the most popular among the SC2 dedicated fans or not, that is not controllable by this vote, so there's not much one can complain *after* the vote took place.

I understand your critiques, but maybe they should be addressed at changing / improving the poll for the next time, since this time everything went according to the rules.

Probably because they can apply for a visa much earlier than the rest (and it is much harder to get one from China than almost anywhere else in the world.)

They still keep using both names and flags.

where? i dont remember seeing both anywhere

I voted Kelazhur, I just think he needs to have more matches vs the very best players. I think this guy can be the best foreign terran if he can have a lot of experiences like this. IMO of course .

Long time watcher, first time voter (might have actually voted in the past, but don't remember)
Has HYPE! definitely won me over after Valencia.
Lambo! homestory cup made me really enjoy this guy. Though normally it'd go to Scarlett.
And Heromarine! again homestory cup made me a fan of this man.

Just hope the Kelazhur promoters promote the event when it's on too. New viewers hype!

It's still Taiwan on their website, could it be that it's the event organizers (DH, O'G...) that change it?

Thank you, Sir.

Last year many complained and suggested the blizzard that the votes should be open to everyone, after all it was a Fan Voting Event.

Official Statement from Blizzard (last year):

We are aware that voting required a US StarCraft II Character ID to participate, and we very actively pushed pro-active messaging to make sure users knew how to contribute to polls. For future fan voting events, we will make ease as participation for global fans a top priority.

"Most of a large portion won't watch at all" But some or many will. And that's already good for the starcraft community.

The rules of the poll were set. If you don't like them, suggest something better for the next one. Meanwhile, each and every player will use all of the available and allowed ways to win it.

Honestly, you look like Avilo complaining and shinning, or like Idra complaining about cheeses, as if they played the wrong type of the game or anything like that.

love if someone is arguing with "this is the truth und you have to accept this"....

i voted for kelazhur earlier on. i dont blame him at all how things developed. im fine with this beeing a popular vote.

There's the thing though. "The people interested in starcraft" is not a fixed amount or group. This very poll may already be helping to change and increasing it.

Some of the people that you disregard may very well take interest after voting just for support. I guess that's the whole point of this format.

I don't think Blizzard considered that something like this could happen.
And I don't know what is toxic about being unhappy with it.

And how many people voted for Uthermal because they're teamliquids fan more than Uthermals? Can you measure that?

The point is that it went against the intended purpose of the poll.
The poll was supposed to get the most popular players to the tournament. Fallen and the others basically skewed the poll by using their popularity to get a less popular player to the tournament.
Don't come with "The rules allowed it so it's okay". Blizzard clearly not considered that so many people outside of the community will vote because they were told to.

I like how there are 5000 more votes in the Team World: Terran poll than in the other five polls, seems legit.

There is a difference between fans of an esports team voting for their favorite players, and a non-sc2 community voting for someone purely because of nationality.

Do you really want polls in the future to be brazil vs. germany vs. netherlands?

Thing is that nobody has a definitve say on what the Starcraft community wants. The poll was open to fans of the people involved regardless of restriction, so if that was the point was badly designed.

Let's say uThermal asked his mom who don't care about Starcraft to vote for him on the poll, was it a legit vote? Will his mom watch the stream?

Nobody personally knows each single person who voted on the poll to say who's engaged or not on Starcraft, so if there's something to blame on all this is how the restrictions and requirements to vote were made. Aside that is pure whining.

If you think it's unfair you have all the right to press blizzard to make it a better system for next year, but hoping Kelazhur gets "crushed and bm'd" just show how some people here are focusing on the wrong thing.

Yeah, it is clearly NOT Kelazhurs fault. It's more a fault of the new system and also of the brazilian e-sport scene. I hope Blizzard will do something so this situation won't repeat next year.

Last minute voting, got MaSa, Scarlett and MaNa down. With the proper match-up they will do well, i.e., MaNa vs terran, Scarlett vs protoss and MaSa vs zerg. I would have taken Reynor if he is available, he is the most insane zerg outside of Korea besides Serral.

C'mon, this is silly. Kelazhur has more votes than all the zergs combined. For the most of the time the polls were running, the three races had comparable amount of votes, which makes sense and point towards real people doing real voting. Then suddenly this guy gets a couple thousand extra votes?

This thing should be scratched.

I hope this voting isn't the ONLY criteria, cuz it's veery abusive and a bit unfair. Look at the terran situation.
Hope this isn't the determining factor
