Foreigners just haven't had many chances to compete in Korea (at least for SC2), hence the low probabilities of them winning all this while.

It sounds like "We could beat Koreans whenever we want. It wasn't because there's no chance."

Really, huh.

No, it doesn't.

I'm not denying that there is a gap between Koreans and foreigners in StarCraft (in fact, I've consistently maintained that there was a big gap in HoTS, but the gap has been narrowed this year mainly due to the LoTV reset and its volatility).

I just take exception to the suggestion that it takes a foreigner 16 years to bridge this 'gap' - an illusory gap over an illusory period.

This 16 year 'illusory' period stretches over BW, WoL, HoTS and LoTV. All these games are similar in concept, but have nuances that benefit certain play styles over the other. So I don't feel it's right to group them all together. It's like Neeb beating Flash in LoTV, and the headlines says "Neeb beats 6-time Starleague Champion".

Yes, so in a way, I am downplaying both the 16-year Korean dominance and Neeb's miraculous achievement here. Sorry to be a downer!

But that comment about "being the first non-Korean player who won Korean tournament in 16 years" bugs me. Yes, it's a fact, but rather misleading. It implies that foreigners have been trying very hard for years to win tourneys in Korea and fail miserably, when that's simply not true. Foreigners just haven't had many chances to compete in Korea (at least for SC2), hence the low probabilities of them winning all this while.

It's like making a big deal out of Germany being the first ever European country to win the World Cup in South America (in 2014). Yes, it's a fact. But when you consider that the World Cup is held every four years and the hosts are spread out across the continents, the record-breaking feat is more down to limited chances.

Yes, what Neeb has achieved is amazing. But let's not treat it as if Haiti has just won the World Cup.

I think you really underestimate how many foreigners were going to Korea in SC2's heyday. Nearly every top tier foreign player went to Korea to play in Proleague and were given seeds into the GSL, and they just had zero success. Even the "best foreigner ever," Stephano, got knocked out of the GSL in like the ro32 by Flying, who retired a couple months later because he didn't even like the game.

He got knocked out by Innovation who was just about to go TvZ killer mode lol.

KR Journalist asks question -> KR translator translates to EN to Neeb -> Neeb answers in EN -> KR translator translates to KR to Journalists -> KR Journalists paraphrase on laptop the translation.

so yeah these are very simple and don't represent what neeb really said

Congrats to Neeb. Interview wasn't really that insightful lol. Also, this is a bizzare statement to make. Would've made more sense if they stated 6 years (since SCII's inception):
"Alex won KeSPA cup, being the first non-Korean player who won Korean tournament in 16 years"

Hopefully we'll get a more interesting interview later. i'm sure he has tons of people asking for interviews since he's gotten so much mainstream attention being the first American and all.

I'm sure TL will do one. Being a faceless korean it probably won't be very different from this one though.

It's a little bit of an overstatement but not THAT much of one. A ton of non-koreans have played in Korean tournaments and very few even came close to this.

I started making a list of all the non-koreans who've played in korean tournaments but I gave up because I couldn't remember everyone.

I only caught the finals (and last game of TY vs Trap), but damn Neeb played amazing. PvP looks incredibly tough to control and he was just on point all the time.

Watching these games really makes me want to play again, but I know if I play like 5 games, get placed in gold because I have no MMR anymore, I'm gonna be stuck grinding ladder games until I'm masters again, and I dont have time for that right now haha
