Remember, Redbull sponsors a lot of shit, including the F1 races. Its expensive to sponsor a car in F1, like millions of dollars, but the same number of eyeballs see their logo on the cars. Its all about exposure, and I am sure Nerchio easily gets hundreds of thousands of viewers when he makes it into top 8 of all these tourneys. As well, the upkeep to sponsor an esports player is nothing compared to an F1 car, so they can afford to sponsor him for 100k/year. Nercio getting hundreds of thousands of viewers is a pretty far stretch. I also don't think it's as much as 100k a year. I would be really surprised if it was anything more than 10k a year. On topic, it's really great to see Nerchio getting what he deserves for being such a good player. I also hope, in a selfish way, that he has a streaming obligation in his sponsorship contract, because the rare few times he has streamed, it was really good.

We will never know, but Red Bull pours millions in sponsorship. Giving Nerchio 100k is a drop in the bucket for them. Perhaps 100k/year is a bit much, but a contract for 100k for several years isn't a stretch. Bomber was sponsored for 3 years if I recall.

Perhaps it's a drop in the bucket for them but still why would they pay him 100k if they can just give him 20k or something like that and gain the same value from it?

Because Nerchio is proving himself to be marketable. His performance is improving, his interviews are smart, and his character is likable. If Nerchio knows his worth, which I think he does, he can ask for a nice sum of money for sponsorship. I don't know how much he is getting from Redbull, but I do know that these kind of sponsorship has to be a sizable sum. At least enough to support him so he can focus on his play.

Actually its the opposite. RedBull prefers to sponsor individuals in esports compared to teams.

I wasn't comparing individuals to teams, I was comparing esports to conventional sports. How many individuals in esports are sponsored? How many in the X games? How about in the F1 races? I only follow SC2 professional scene, and they haven't invested in a lot of individuals. Bomber and Nerchio are the only two I'm aware of. Do they sponsor Hearthstone players? Dota2 or LoL?

Do they sponsor Hearthstone players? Dota2 or LoL? There's a handful. They used to sponsor Demon from Dota 2. They currently sponsor Leffen from Smash, Bjergensen from League, Snake Eyes from Street Fighter, and just random racing game player. (Edit: Also Nadeshot from CoD was a big sponsorship for quite some time) I think they havent been involved in SC2 players since Bomber retired and Life went to KT.

Bomber is still active and he's still sponsored.
