DreamHack is making its first ever stop to Canada this August 12-14 with an event in Montreal, in what is sure to be the fiercest StarCraft II competition to date with the WCS Circuit Summer Championship! The event will see 32 of StarCraft II’s best and brightest gather to face off for their share of the $150,000 prize pool and a chance to earn some of the 11,000 WCS Circuit points up for grabs.

Come watch as players from all around the globe join to fight for honor and glory, and the North Americans attempt to grab a title on their home soil.

Seriously, I started to just not give a shit about these WCS Circuit tournaments, but these PR statements are just silly. I mean, advertisement and PR statements are rarely 100% true (-> which leads to unclear statements in most ads), but this is just straight up lying to the audiences face. And (clearly) false advertisement is illegal in most countries for a reason.

and this is without a doubt an obvious example for false advertisement, because they excluded the Koreans BECAUSE they are too good. There's absolutely now way they really think this the fiercest competition (as which they promote it) with this background in mind.

You guys are getting worked up over this waayyyyyy to much.

We get it, you know who the best pros are. Cool. We do too. Don't need to tell us. WCS is still fun to watch.

That's not the point. The point is the way they advertise the tournament, which is just factually wrong and they know this - and that's illegal in most countries. (although I don't know Swedish/Canadian laws)
They purposely misslead the audience and promote an image of the competition that's just factually fase. DreamHack won't promote a DotA 2 or the LoL tournament as "the biggest DotA 2/LoL tournament of the year", because it's just factually wrong and they know it. About as wrong as the PR statement up there is wrong and they know it.

And your first point is one of the problems: YOU know who the best players are - the casual audience of this tournament (if there is something like that in SCII) might not know and due to the way the tournament is promoted be misslead. And that - in terms of advertisement laws - is a problem. At least if it is an obvious case of false advertisement, which is the case.

I don't think the offense is big enough to care about laws.

But it pisses me off that they use false advertisement to make the casual and new audiences interested in this tournament and then use said interest to justify the region locked system. As if people were stupid to not notice the carnage that Blizzcon is going to be.

The text says "The event will see 32 of StarCraft II’s best and brightest". They're not saying the players are the best, they're saying they are of the best. As for "knowing who the best players are", it's a matter of perspective. You have your idea of the best players, other people have their own. You can have people calling Zest a top player, others will call him a Patchtoss. Some people will say Nerchio could get into Code S, some will say he would fail horribly.

False advertising would be saying that the players have been "voted the best 32 players of the world". That would be a lie.

For the first sentence, it's the same. It's just buzzwords, and a subjective statement, but not a lie imo. The "Fiercest competition" doesn't have to be between the best players. If the player are close to the same level, it can be fierce.

Anyway, you'd have to be pretty naive to believe any ad telling you they're the best. They have the right to do so, and you have the right to ignore that statement and to see for yourself.

Considering how the WCS Circuit came into existence: Nope, not a matter of perspective. The Koreans were explicitely excluded to give the foreign scene a chance to grow because the Koreans were too strong.
Therefore: Even if some foreigner had a chance in Code A/S, purely on the idea this tournament is based on, foreigners are weaker. Therefore calling them even "some of the best" is wrong within the field they created with the WCS Circuit.

I doubt anyone would be allowed to organize a tennis tournament, sell thousands of tickets based on the advertisement that "32 of the best players in the world" would participate and in the end you exclude all the top 100 because they are too strong - without mentioning it. In an advertisement, major restrictions like that have to be communicated. Otherwise you'd be fucked as an organizer of a "real" sports event.

Still it's not as big of a lie as back then when they tried to convince us that no other SC2 players than the 32 participants even exist

Good luck with that lawsuit. You 100% can do that, you can have a local high scool sport competition and say their are "some of the best" because that dosen't mean anythings. There is not some magical barrier in the code of law where a person stop to be "one of the best" or whatever.
You may have to be obligated to say that you exclude Koreans but I am not sure on that, I personally don't think it is obligated but I am no jurist.

It's okay if it's not fun for you. You don't have to. Plenty of other tournaments to watch.

Some people sure get worked up over WCS. I'm not a fan of the new system either but if people are so anti it, just stop reading and posting in threads about it.

Make a blog about it or something.

I'm surprised people are so enraged about them using some nice words to describe their tournament. What did you expect them to write? "hey guys please come watch our mediocre tournament.."?? If you worked for a company and you wrote that way to represent them, you'd lose your job pretty fast.

I gotta say, I never would have believed that a major tournament would take place in Montreal. I've been to Seoul, Anaheim and Toronto twice to attend live events. It's nice to not need to travel for once in order to attend a live tournament =)

"Watch 32 of the best players outside Korea compete for the WCS Summer Championship", maybe?
It's not that hard to use nice words without lying to the audiences face.

Especially if you consider the fact that they think it's a good thing to ban the Koreans in terms of viewership numbers; why should they ban the Koreans to increase the viewership - and then not communicate the fact that they're banned?

I'm just hyped to have a tournament in Canada again. The WCS season 3 finals in Toronto was amazing, so I hope Montreal doesn't disappoint.

But seriously....Western Canada still exists too.

I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

Oh come on. This is beyond ridiculous. "false advertisement" for a bit of hyped fluff text? You lot are completely losing any sense of perspective.

It's not about viewership numbers in the short term. It's about building up a viable scene outside Korea.
