Interview by Kim Hong Jae

There was a boy. The boy was called a genius as he made his pro debut. He raised his team to victory in its darkest moments. Many fans were enticed by his games, and the boy soon became the greatest superstar and stayed like that.

Nobody expected him to lose when he played, and the boy always seemed to be at his prime. Maybe he used to be too good. Although he always played well, haters who remembered only his prime grew. And suddenly, he announced his retirement to everyone’s surprise.

‘The Ultimate Weapon’ Flash, one of the most iconic pro gamers, has announced that he would retire. There is always an end to every story, but the news of Flash’s retirement still seems alien to the ears. While he hasn’t been that insurmountable wall from SCBW, Flash had still been a consistent player in SC2.

Flash, the veteran progamer with 9 years under his belt, the champion who never stopped fighting, is now leaving us. We wanted to hear Flash’s story behind his retirement.

December 1, I heard that Flash was retiring. While it is a common occurrence for players to change teams or retire during the off season, I couldn’t believe Flash was retiring. No, you’re joking, I told my colleague. Shortly after, I was speechless as I stared at the article draft that clearly stated the retirement of the Ultimate Weapon.

I am certain that Flash’s phone buzzed nonstop that day. I wasn’t sure of what to ask him, even as I was calling him to make arrangements for an interview. However, Flash greeted me with a surprising cheerfulness that I hadn’t seen from him in a while.

“I’m both refreshed and sad right now. I feel like I’ve set down a heavy load, but there’s this sadness in me as well. I keep on thinking about life at KT Rolster, which has been my home for 9 years. I don’t regret the decision, though. I think I’ve achieved most things I could do with a career as a progamer, and I think I will continue to be relevant in eSports history, if I do say so myself. (Laughs)”

“I think I started to tell people about it around the 2nd round of Proleague. I first told Coach Hery, since I’ve spent a lot of time with him since I was young. I also told my family and Rain as well. Rain’s one of the most trustworthy guys I know. I told him I really wanted to help my team win this year. Well, I failed though. I told Jaedong about it during our matches in China. He told me I should do a few more years, but he agreed when he heard my reasons. He told me I did well during the past years.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever really stopped to rest during my 9 years. My arms hurt too, and even practicing became really hard. I think I was mentally down as well. Then I suddenly had the feeling that this was the end. I had to go now, or I would lose the chance in life as well. I also wanted to try new things, so I felt this was the prime time.”

There’s the magic phrase: “but this is Flash we’re talking about.” It made every game you played, even the ones extremely one sided, look epic. In the end of SCBW, there were even fans who liked the games you lost the best. I was one of them too. I’ve never thought of it from your viewpoint until now. The fans’ expectations must have been a heavy weight.

“I didn’t have the luxury for that back in SCBW. I think of my prime time as 09-11, and I didn’t even realize I had won that many tourneys. I just kept playing and playing, and I was on top all of a sudden. I am amazed at how I did because it looks impossible now that I look back.
In my last months of SC2 though, I really felt the pressure. It wasn’t because I had a specific reason. There are always cases of players not doing well all of a sudden. I think it’s some kind of growth pain, but it did wear me down significantly.”

Flash smiled as he talked throughout the heavy theme of the interview. Before it became too grim, I decided to bring up questions of Flash’s amateur life.

“I loved Starcraft with a passion. I have a friend called Lee Hyeong Yeon, and he got second place in the national elementary school Starcraft championship. So I played a 1v1 against him and won. I used to be a random battle.net user back then, but Hyeong Yeon got me into clans and stuff and I became a progamer through the people I met from there. It took me two tries to get to the courage match finals, and my opponent was JangBi (laughs).

I got into the team as a practice partner for Pantech. After 2 months there, I kept 1st place in the team ranking matches for the next 4 months. Apparently, the older gamers said that I would not be able to perform my 100% in televised matches though.”

One of the many questions the fans asked was about Flash’s SCBW return. Many players who had achieved stardom have lost fans due to their questionable behavior on live streams and there was concern about Flash going down that road as well.

“It’s really a blank canvas right now. Nothing is settled, and I don’t have specifics. I need some time to think. If a place wants me really badly though, I will try to view it with positive eyes.
I know my fans will want me playing SCBW as well, but I’m tentative on that. I haven’t played it in 3-4 years. I know that if I do, however, I won’t do what the fans worry about. I promise that, and I know how much fans will expect of me if I go back to SCBW as well so it’s really hard to say.
Since I’ve retired, I began to meet up with old players I used to know from Brood War. I’ve met with Sea recently, and now there are rumors that I am going to stream BW(laughs). Not true, so I think I’ll lie low for a bit.”

The interview time took longer than I’ve expected. It was really fun talking to Flash, almost like catching up with an old friend. Flash told me he had one last thing he wanted to say to his fans.

“I’m sorry that I haven’t been able to achieve much in SC2, but I guarantee that I’ve tried really hard during my progamer years. I don’t think much of my private life was exposed either. Every message that the fans give me saying ‘you did well’, really goes to heart. Many fans have come on my fan café and facebook page to leave messages, and I’ve read them all. I think I’ve received so much love and I wonder how I can ever repay you guys.
I’ve met so many fans over the 9 years and I remember each and every one of you. I’ve tried to express my thanks during interviews, but I still don’t think it is enough. I’m going to take a brief rest for now, but I want to come back to the eSports scene so please cheer me on.

You guys are the motivation that kept me holding the mouse for these past years. You guys changed me from a boy who loved games into a real progamer. Thanks again.”

I will never forget the days when "Child Labor" carried KTF Magicns (?) and destroyed everyone, after playing Brood War for only 2 years. He was fucking 14 years old when he started destroying, literally, everyone.

The Best 3 Times (Picked by Flash)
1. 2007 Daum Starleague Ro16 (vs Light)
I practiced until 5 AM with Coach Hery because I was so nervous. It was my debut match.
2. 2009 June 30 Shinhan Proleague (vs BraQ/firebathero) 5set Ace match
I think I understood something about Starcraft after this match. I won almost everything after this point.
3. 2011 ABC Mart MSL Champion.
Starleague and MSL combined, it was my 6th victory, and I felt many things

Apparently the operation only helped that much if his arm still hurts. He never complained about it though.

While there is bw elitism around, this post wasn't one... noone would argue his bw titles weren't the greatest achievement in HIS career... practice basic comprehension before you trash post.

So sad to see him go, but I trust him in making the right transition, as always. That fbh game finale is my best moment of his also

I also read it in the same way that s/he did and it seemed like an sc2 trashing post. Quick dig into posting history confirms it as there are many others.

SC2 stressful lol. Where you control all your units on one hotkey and macro with 2 clicks.

Way better than SC2. LoL is actually pretty enjoyable as you have plenty of room for insane plays and outplays, unlike SC2

Sometimes I think about the epic, legendary games not played since 2012. The talent of Jaedong, Flash, Fantasy, Storku and Jangbi wasted at their primes on SC2. As there is a parallel universe where Blizzard never decided to make SC2 so that we could have enjoyed TBLS duke it out more. Considering how many legendary games each year have been produced, it is a travesty to have such talents waste their time.

i am sure there are more if you open more than 4-5 posts

I'm sure everyone knows they're his greatest achievement, but the only reason you'd say it that way is to imply BW > SC2.

Just looking forward to his return to Starcraft in whatever fashion it is after a good break :D

I've actually not played BW more than a couple of campaign missions. I haven't even followed the pro-scene in BW.

I jumped into Starcraft when WoL was released.

Going forward.

My question was an honest one. His greatest achivements in his career was MSL and OSL, or are there other ones that you consider are bigger achivements he should have displayed?

that particular statement is true though (with the only exception being JD). if BW had never ended Flash would easily have added more OSL titles to his collection and surpass July and Nada, he is still very young then.

Sure, and you could say such things without the "fuck sc2" attitude if
it is a travesty to have such talents waste their time
wasn't added on the end

This is how I read it. You don't have to go looking for reasons to get upset when what he said is perfectly factual. Just because he bashes sc2 sometimes doesn't make every post a bash.

I knew flash was good after I saw him play his first two starleagues. Knew he was the real deal after he won bacchus. Held on to that belief during his almost 2yr "slump" when haters were happy to declare him a fluke / one-hit wonder. Was rewarded with his ascent to true God mode in late 2009, where he blew away all expectations from even his most hard core fans/believers.

So if you don't want us to say anything about SC2, why is this article posted on the SC2 forum, even though most of his career and almost all of the article is BW related? Why not post it in the BW forum? I basically configured tl.net so that I see only BW stuff, yet I need to get this thread linked from the BW forum.

Also it is the perfect time to do so. I doubt that Flash would have retired in 2015 when there was only BW.

What a great read. Thanks for the translation, DCStarcraftGall!
Stopped watching ESL content in 2022 when the company was acquired by Savvy Gaming Group. Also object to sponsorships by the U.S. Air Force. Thanks for the lively discussions about sportswashing. StarCraft II is not for me anymore.

This thread is a shining example of how the quality of the TL forums greatly decreased after Kespa switched to SC2, the BW forums especially. Nowadays it's almost as bad as Reddit.

On topic: Thanks for the translation. Unfortunately he doesn't really say much of interest, I'm looking forward to whatever he decides to do next.

This must have been in the first years after BWs release. If anyone asks for a good reason for South Korea's dominance in Starcraft...

Flash left Brood War before he left SC2. Given that he was an active player in one and not the other, it seems fairly obvious why it was posted in this forum and not the other.

maybe it's something lost in translation.
i don't really follow bw-streaming aside from favourites but some of the outliers are
terror (no stardom)
jaehoon (not much stardom) for stream cheating, or something along those lines, though it wasn't a huge deal and it happened outside of an actual stream session.

the only person i can think of who could even fit the bill is bisu.
skt1 coach iloveoov made some comments about how it was unbecoming of a sc player like bisu to stream for donations. (not verbatim here, but you get the gist). although i love watching his play even on stream, it does seem a bit like a money grab. again, i don't even know if this fits the bill.

very incredibly likely i'm missing some key info, but this is why i say it might be lost in translation.

So those bad results did take a big toll on him after all. Also I wish our expectations for him to do well weren't a burden or pressure at all.. Flash we only wanted to see you play T_T.

---

There is always someone upset that "why is this posted in the SC2 forums and not BW?!".

While I understand the frustration because you are forced to browse content you don't like in order to find the news that you want, I don't understand why you come here bashing the game, arguing with other posters and playing the fool saying "oh but those are true facts" instead of leave a comment on the Website Feedback thread.
(The analogy of the bigger brother and the baby seems quite on point.)

hes more or less talking about bisu but there are a few guys who have been streaming for so long and haven't succumbed to outright asking for donations, like Mind or guys like larva who now generally has a more serious attitude towards the game and therefor does not do weird stuff like jump out of a window....Really it comes down to your personal preference, if you want to be that guy who entertains for money then cool.

in the end though flash will probably stream if for no reason other than to satisfy his fans, hes just that kind of guy, my only hope is that he doesn't go "full afreeca".

I also told my family and Rain as well. Rain’s one of the most trustworthy guys I know. I told him I really wanted to help my team win this year. Well, I failed though.

I love how Flash and Rain are so close despite being the faces of KT and SKT throughout most of SC2 and the intense rivalry between the two teams. Pure class from both guys. I hope Flash finds a role coaching KT in some manner pretty soon; he is a perfect example for others of what it should mean to be a professional gamer and how to conduct yourself.

Speaking of Rain, I hope he's not thinking of retiring as well. Haven't seen him since HOTS ended, no streaming, no tournament participation. :/

Anyway, did Flash do military service yet? Or is exempt because of his contributions to the esports scene? I really want to see him in PL as a coach. Forgive my ignorance if it's common knowledge.

Ahh........same as what the writer feeling.

I thought Flash retire is impossible . He is like never give up he will be the best SC2 player in the world.

That is what I always believe in .

So when I saw retire, my heart explode.

So sad day. Now need to find another player to root for . . .

But , there is no player to replace my Flash

Ahh............really none . . .

Now my dream, of Flash being Best sc2 player hype train is truely gone

Man I just hope he comes back as coach for KT. If he does, this feeling that something is lost would go away. It'd be an even greater challenge for him. I would start enjoying every single KT game on a whole new level. And holy shit would they start kicking ass in PL.

So sad. But there are such possibilities. Flash, you're not done making history yet!!

I'm sure this is far from the last long-form interview with Flash we'll get to read over the coming weeks and months. There is so much to talk about and discuss, and so many people to ask the questions, that Flash's interview schedule could be occupied for quite some time to come.

really larva? I saw him a couple weeks ago on terror's stream fighting in a boxing ring against some viewer. it was the cringest shit ever lol

I think taking terror out of the discussion (because lets face it he was barely a progamer), the main root of all this "progamer loses face to earn money on afreeca" stemmed from pusan. he used to go down on all fours and crawl around the room acting like a dog for balloons shit was hilarious

Some BW oldbies have been streaming strictly for money, screaming at cam/shaving eyebrows for money, treating viewers differently based on how much they donate, etc. Former STX Soul Terror is one of the biggest examples.

TL Wiki says he was banned from Afreeca because he competed with middle schoolers eating ramen and the ramen was too spicy. Not true. When the middle school kids lost, he sprayed Soy sauce all over them with a big tub and that got on the 9 o'clock news.

SCBW Afreeca streamers is a tentative subject since many former SC players currently stream BW.
(Sea, Bisu, Best, The Rock, JulyZerg etc), so it is natural that coaches and players are hesitant about this.
I know for a fact that recently Bisu kissed a girl on cam when a viewer donated a big sum of money.
Best lost a match vs Terror (Best gave vision and took out 1 probe after start) and shaved his eyebrows on cam.
These were the 2 most recent ones that were a big issue in DCinside Starcraft Gallery.

hmh i honestly think that the very negative reactions that we saw by SC2 coaches and affiliates/Spokesman of the KeSpa actually stems from the fact, that they are losing a lot of viewerbase to korean Streamers and Events like SSL and VSL in Korea. So discrediting it, could be an expression of that.

Than on the other hand it's obvious, that the very outgoing afreeca scene is kind of a "shock" to the established Pro's and Teams since it's so contradictionary to the way pro gamers normally act (very humble, upright, etc )

What is this in reference to?

maybe it's something lost in translation.
i don't really follow bw-streaming aside from favourites but some of the outliers are
terror (no stardom)
jaehoon (not much stardom) for stream cheating, or something along those lines, though it wasn't a huge deal and it happened outside of an actual stream session.

the only person i can think of who could even fit the bill is bisu.
skt1 coach iloveoov made some comments about how it was unbecoming of a sc player like bisu to stream for donations. (not verbatim here, but you get the gist). although i love watching his play even on stream, it does seem a bit like a money grab. again, i don't even know if this fits the bill.

very incredibly likely i'm missing some key info, but this is why i say it might be lost in translation.

Some BW oldbies have been streaming strictly for money, screaming at cam/shaving eyebrows for money, treating viewers differently based on how much they donate, etc. Former STX Soul Terror is one of the biggest examples.
https://youtu.be/Pt6Wy6WorFI

I'll seriously flip if FlaSh shaves his eyebrows and jumps out of the window on stream. Aka not gonna happen.

Of all the examples, someone had to mention the most extreme case? Terror is an anomaly. He belongs to an elite club consisting of himself and himself only. He is in a class of his own, dozens of levels higher than your average streamer on the entirety of Afreeca.

Flash's retirement is really something. It makes me feel just as bad as the football players of my childhood (Gerrard and Del Piero, to quote personal favorites) putting an end to their careers. He moves on with his life, sure, but he also takes some of ours with him.
Albeit that's not even remotely comparable to what I'll feel when Roger Federer says goodbye to tennis.

I'm really curious what he will do in the next 3 years before milkitary. He said he's considering differnt things in esports, but the only one I know he's said was coaching

ya terror hardly does anything crazy these days, at least compared to old terror haha

he still makes a ton of money though, according to this table regarding top afreeca BJ earnings in the month of november 2015 terror is up there at #8, 493,296 "balloons" which converts to 38,161,379 KRW (his cut is 80% because he is a partnered BJ) which is roughly $32370.77 USD.

Awesome interview and translation. God had absolute class and humility from the beginning till the end.

I know you won't get this, but how else would I personalize something meant for you? This is coming from a fan of yours during your BW era (I still keep tabs of course, but I've never been a fan of SC2).

I can't believe I'd ever see the day. Flash, you will do well at whatever you choose. You understand what potential truly is. I love and respect you deeply for the amazing and unforgettable Starcraft all your efforts have given me. I've never been a bigger fan of anything or anyone until you came a long. To my own surprise, I'm holding back tears as I write this. Good luck in whatever you do from here - you have the support of thousands of others just like me who's hearts you dwell in.

Well wishes,
Michael.

What was the ultimate reason for Flash retiring? He is still young and certainly wasnt bad at all. He could have gained a second wind and reclaim his former glory. Was he simply tired of pro gaming after 9 years?

There are countless pro gamers who have never achieved same succes as Flash or are not as good as Flash was at retiring, and they are still pursuing the pro gaming life, so why Flash had to retire?

He has done everything a progamer can wish to achieve. Also i think its kind of clever, Flash was allways the type of guy who made the best and optimal choices best in his own universe in the universe of pro starcraft. It takes so much energy to be on top all the time, its very demanding, physical (wristinjury) and mental or psycholigical (to be ahead of your peers 1 step allways). Maybe he could do a second reign but he decided its time for life, its time for discovering a new facet of life maybe real life?

It was a pleasure to watch your starcraft Flash, peace and out!
I am a happy man
