The most highly anticipated group in the Ro16, Group D stands apart with its combination of prestige and potential. Every player here has won a championship; none of them are has-beens looking for redemption. At least 2 of them are favored to reach the semifinals, while the other 2 are unsettling wildcards. The monotony of matchups is only a brief dampener on what promises to be an electric night.
If you want a wunderkind to win dual Starleagues and you can’t stand Zerg, Maru is your horse. Ever since his forgettable showings against SKT back in week 2 of PL, Maru has returned reenergized and sharper than even. He cut a warpath through the IEM Taipei qualifiers, steamrolled all NSSL opposition after being upset in the NSSL group stage, and he recovered his mojo in Proleague. If not for a distressing loss against Life at Taipei and an inherent weakness versus PartinG, he would be the favorite to claim both titles. That latter part will be the biggest hurdle if he wants to get out of this group. Currently Maru sits on a 5-12 game record with a 2-7 series record; after Maru snatched victory in a Leifeng Cup final, PartinG responded with 2 dropkicks in the GSL and Taipei group stages.
With so many scattershot failures over the past few months, PartinG’s ego ought to be a bit deflated. While his indefatigable braggadocio has always existed separate of actual results (arguably, he would be a gimmicky BO Protoss without that facet of his personality), PartinG’s post-HSC momentum has been reduced to intermittent spurts and gasps. Every achievement he’s earned in a smaller tournament has been paired with failure in a larger, more prestigious arena: a Kung Fu Cup in exchange for NSSL, a close whiff at IEM Taipei to soften his ASL title, etc. The synchronicity is probably a coincidence, but will that be PartinG’s mindset going into this group? Luckily he got the most advantageous opening possible. Maru is quite the fearful beast in TvP but he has looked helpless against PartinG in their last 2 encounters. This is no big surprise considering PartinG has won 20 consecutive PvT games since December 16th. The Flash Wolves Protoss should give more thought to preparing for the mirror matchup, which has given him sporadic problems during that same time span.
One of the more jubilant stories of this GSL has been the return of MC. When he initially returned to Korea, fans rightfully worried that he would be exposed as the king guppy in a small pond. MC’s continued relevance had been tied to excellent placements Europe, a region brimming with top-tier Korean talent but shallow when it came to lower-level competition; barring a rough Ro16 group, he was virtually guaranteed quarterfinal spots within such a system. Transferring to a new, stronger region could only be a risk. Fortunately for his supporters MC reignited the old fire in his Ro32 group, dispatching PenguiN and FanTaSy back to the Shadow Realm with ease. Coming out on top of an easy group guarantees nothing, but it holds promise. With enough time and practice, we might see the return of the Boss Toss.
Rarely has a player felt so overrated and underrated at the same time. By all accounts herO should be a strong contender to advance. He is a stalwart presence in the Protoss hierarchy, only dropping out of sight for a short while during summer of last year; Less than 3 months ago he made a stunning comeback against Rain to take IEM San Jose, cementing himself as the most prolific winner on that circuit. Yet he has been the focal point of several catastrophic meltdowns, and there’s justified doubt concerning his chances. At this point his PvP woes are ludicrous. Not only has he lost 6 out of his last 7 series, he only played badly in 1 of them: coin flips are outperforming him. PvT is a less daunting hurdle, but still fraught with peril considering the opponent. With the way Maru dismantled him at IEM Taipei, herO will not be eager for a rematch.
Predictions:
PartinG > Maru MC > herO PartinG > MC Maru > herO Maru > MC
PartinG is such an underrated player. The guy has been in Code S (or WCS Premier Korea, whatever) every single season for more than THREE YEARS now. That's YEARS. Three years ago when PartinG first appeared in Code S...
Mothership vortex was considered a viable strat in lategame PvZ oGs still existed aLive was one of the best Terrans in the world Life was a total unknown BL/infestor wasn't only not solved yet it wasn't even a PROBLEM yet BoxeR and NaDa were in Code S
In SC2 terms it might as well have been decades ago. I think this is as impressive a feat as Mvp's 4 GSL championships or soO's 4 consecutive finals.
PartinG's weakness has always been his mediocre PvZ. Without a Zerg in this group he's going to get out.

I'd agree PartinG is underrated as the current best PvT with pretty good PvP and PvZ (despite what people say he kills most Zergs). I don't think PartinG has ever dipped out of being considered a top-tier Protoss since the night he dazzled with his HT play and owned Jjkaji twice (this was in January of 2012..).
Still, in all-time accomplishments he's nowhere near Mvp. still below soO and would probably rank below most gsl champs and foreign pirate Taeja. There's a pretty big gap between champ and just making the 32 of code S.
iirc PartinG is even currently tied with DRG for the longest code S streak ever.
PartinG < Maru: I believe Maru has had enough time to figure out Parting. MC > herO: it's MC. Maru < MC: again I repeat, IT'S MC M Parting < herO: could go either way, but I'm pretty sure herO is better at pvp. Maru > herO: Maru will just win.

I agree with most of that but...
DRG's NesTea Award is pretty tainted I think; he didn't make it into 2013 Korea Premier S2 but gets a pass because hyper-technically that was an "OSL" not a "Code S" even though at that point OSL and GSL had been merged into the same league. And you make it sound like PartinG is like Curious who gets into Code S and then immediately loses. I mean look at this:
12 tournaments with only 2 exits in the Ro32 and advances to at least the Ro8 half the time.
And I don't see how you can say he's below soO in accomplishments. PartinG's won WCS, Red Bull NY and HSC. soO doesn't have a single offline tournament victory.

Now you're just writing bad posts on purpose for us to critizise. I see right through your double bluff.

To be honest I don't think Parting is underrated at all. If anything I think Rain is underrated. Before all of the things you mention in your post, Rain was the best Protoss and nearly double royal roaded the GSL and OSL in 2012 immediately after coming over to SC2. And the only reason Rain has a lower consecutive GSL Code S streak running than Parting is because of Rain forfeiting his Code S spot to go to MLG, iirc. Rain's struggling somewhat at the moment because he plays safe macro toss, and safe macro toss play is very weak atm, and all-in/cheesy toss play is very strong. If anything, he's more underrated than Parting.
People talk quite a lot about Parting, and he's a huge fan favorite, don't know why you think he's underrated at all.
Parting and Maru is also what I would have picked, problem is TL predictions are kind of worse than the Artosis curse for one player out of two picked to get out these groups.
So I'm hoping Parting loses. The thing is that Parting is such a good Protoss though.
I'm also hoping that Maru, arguable best or second best player in the world, comes with some really good builds to counter all these Protoss. Maru has a tendency to try to brute force lesser opponents, which isn't as strong against Protoss with excellent drop defense.
E: This is such a group of death though. You can't ever count out MC either, guy is really scary. I'm hoping Maru can make it through with a nice 2-0!
So many players are favoring PartinG over herO, I can't really wrap my head around that results wise. I'm saying Maru and herO here and to be honest I feel both of them are slighly favored, maybe you could argue PartinG could be favored because of herOs PvP being his weakest MU though.
On paper herO and Maru should advance here and thats what my heart wants to see too, I like PartinG and wouldn't normally mind seeing him advance but over herO or Maru? I'd rather not see that.
Or MC can pull a Solar and just wreck this group lol.

This PartinG v jjakji game, was in from GSL 2012 Season 1 Code 2 Ro16 Group C, 08/02/2012 please?
I've heard reference to this game before, but I wasn't following SC then, was it the first time Storm had been used in PvT or something?
i've got the same prediction as TL, I kinda feel bad about it. Maru could change place with Parting even if the P seems to have his number at the moment;
