TLMC5 began with over one hundred and fifty maps. After deciding on the finalists for TLMC, the judges thought it would be interesting to see a tournament run using the finalists from TLMC5. Ideally we would have run this tournament prior to the final voting of TLMC but due to time constraints we were unable to do so. We hope that this event becomes a success so that we are able to run a tournament for the next TL Map Contest before the voting period takes place.
Regardless of the results in the TLMC, all seven finalist maps deserve to see competitive play. The replays will be helpful to the mapmakers in their future endeavors and getting a sneak peek at the maps (some of which we may see on ladder) will be exciting for sure!

The TeamLiquid Strategy Team would like to take this opportunity to thank all participants ahead of time! We would also like to thank the mapmakers for all their entries into TLMC5. Without you we wouldn't be able to put on an event such as this.
Great idea! As someone posted in the previous thread, judging maps (in this case Cactus Valley) from above might not be true to some maps. The thumbnail looked not very attractive to me, but ingame footage of the map made me think way better of it. This is a good way to give them more detailed showing and perhaps create better voting for next contests! I'll be sure to tune in!
This is a silly thing to say, but when we get to vote, I'm just going to vote for Andun's Valley, just because it's a green map. That map will remind me of early SC2; Kulas Ravine, Lost Temple and especially Tal'Darim Altar. These maps were really nice to me.

edit: also deserves bo3 in ro8, bo5 in ro4 and bo7 in Finals.
Why would you award more prize money for a competition with maps that are not proven to be balanced yet though? As for the TLOpen it's a great idea. I wish I had time for this T_T

This. Every map that is considered for ladder should be played before in that kind of way.

Not sure if it is intentional, but Timberwolf v1.3 on NA server has Rich Vespene Geysers in some bases including the main. Either I opened a wrong custom map, or mapmaker introduced a new approach to the mining yet not many have noticed it yet. 6 gas per trip is significantly faster than usual 4 gas per trip. I don't know about other maps.
Edit: Tested with the one with [TLMC 5] tag as well. This version also have Rich Vespene Geysers.

I think you should try "[TLMC5] Timberwolf" instead of "Timberwofl" and see if the issue is the same. Well, nice snipe Edit : the EU version has the same issue. How could the testers try the map without noticing it? Has it even been playtested?

Will be fixed in ~45 minutes when I get to a computer. Sorry, not sure how that happened. And yes, it was tested. The version we tested had normal geysers afaik.

Okay. Strange bug then.
Different versions being used then? My guess would be that a version with rich geysers was sent and the geysers were changed to test the map but the original version was mistaken for the fixed version and uploaded. There is no visual cue to know what kind of vespene geyser is which unless you click and select the geysers, which while making the map/checking the map out is done well, basically never.

I'm pretty certain that we would have noticed rich geysers in the main base in our testing. ^^ Map is fixed.
You can still play from EU, but it will take place on NA.
The time that its running is really not the most EU friendly (its sunday night) due to WCS schedule on Saturday and the GO4SC2 earlier in the day as well.
Furthermore, its more network connection neutral than EU, NA has better connection to Korea, China, and Oceania region than EU.
I feel like the semis should be bo5 and the finals should be bo7, just so that we're guaranteed to have the potential for every single map to be played, in case there are some that players fanatically veto.
I'm surprised that there are so few pro players registered for now. I mean come on guys, these maps are mostly standard maps, there is 200$ to gain for the winner, 100 $ for the second, and the most high-level players registered now are MajOr, Arthur and SortOf. Where are all the Snutes, Bunnys, NaNiwas, Nerchios, Happys, etc? Give these maps some love ! edit : not a single Frenchman too, what are you waiting for my fellow countrymen

Sign ups for these usually pick up closer to the date.
There will be a big reminder on top of TL soon (tm)
TakeTV will be providing a German Stream for this event!
Big thanks to Naruto, Take, and the rest of the crew at TakeTV for offering to help with the German stream :D
Remember, if you would like to be a community caster let us know! We need to add you to a special list so that you can see the bracket and user codes for all players in order to join games and cast.
Oh boy oh boy oh boy, PartinG is in too. Dis is starting to become really good, hopefully some more Koreans and good foreigners will participate as well.
Update: Due to the timer running on the website, I have decided to add an extra 5 minutes check in time. The timer was going to overrun the check in time (dont know why!)
You will report results and replays once the bracket is up.
It will take a few mins after check in closes for us to ensure the tournament is properly seeded with the notable/pro players (we dont want parting v snute in round 1) then the rest of the bracket will generate.
Once it is generated you will receive a notification on TL (I believe through PM) telling you your opponent and their character code to add them and organise the match.
Post match, you can report your game and upload replay on the tournament page. I'll try to have directions but since I am admin access on the tournament system it looks very different for me.
It will be under the "my tournaments" link next to your name in the upper corner of TL.
don't forget to upload the replay.
For specific instructions, I ask that someone who has played before can put some screenshots. I do not have access to that page (user specific) as a tournament admin
furthermore:
once check in closes in 20 minutes, we will need 5 minutes to finalise the bracket.

If your first round opponent doesnt show up for 20 minutes from this post and you have tried to contact them please follow the rules in your PM inbox to take the next appropriate steps. Someone will be monitoring the TLTournament Admin Inbox for any questions.
We have been made aware of an issue: Some of you put in 4 number character codes. Please ensure you used a 3 number identifier code - some people cannot contact their opponents.
In 10 minutes walkovers will be given to players who have not contacted their opponents. Follow the instructions in the rules you have been PMed to notify us.

damn i think i went toe to toe with a diamond zerg, but i think scouting killed me or something, found the broodlord transition to late and by the time i tried to kill him before he got them, skill fungals over my army RIP
So I lost, but that was to be expected. At least I didn't get destroyed, I'm pretty happy of my game vs a diamond Terran. 33-minute game, we both started by cheesing (roach/bane vs some strange marine/marauder/hellbat off of one base) then it evolved into a standard biomine vs muta/bling/ling. Since my army control sucked pretty hard I lost. As for the map, Timberwolf, it is suprisingly better than what I thought ; I dislike how not open the third is though. But my concern of it making engaging too difficult for Z and too easy for non-Z are false, at least in ZvT.

Oh. Xeno tried to proxy rax but got his SCV picked off. As to the second rax, I think he cancelled it to push out hellions faster. He didn't try to wall at the ramp because banelings would just have picked off the supply depot, and he tried to do some in base layout to help his hellions instead. Didn't work out though.

drone scouting in zvz really?
Probably not on the very highest level, but as a noob, I observe that I gain much more by scouting what is the other guy up to than by mining with a drone for a couple of minutes.
On March 02 2015 05:00 Ej_ wrote: lost to a random ina fucking zvz, aduns shrine needs to die
randoms make my blood boil
Random is the true manliest race.
Zerg: the manliest of races, its strenght lies in its ability to read the flow of the game and react accordingly. It's the race of real strategist. Terran: due to its emphasys on mechanical skills, Terran is the perfect race for fast, smart and competitive people who are not disgusting at all. Mech Terran: read above, just put out the stuff about mechanical skills and terms "fast", "smart", "and competitive", "not" and "at all". Protoss: often (and very rarely unjustly) regarded as abusive, unfunny and overall disgusting, Protoss players still understand what dignity is and do actually stick with their own race.
Random players are actually people who roll a dice before every game in spite of any competitive mindset of their opponent, while secretly praying their pagan gods that Sc2 gives them Protoss so that they can put on some hard abuse. If by any chance Terran or Zerg do appear, they opt for mild abuse while hoping that their opponent plays standard or eventually claim that their eventual loss wasn't that fair, since "it was not their main race". Ugh.

Indeed, the overview is nice and in my game on low it seems cool but watching it played on the stream is painful (while other maps look fine, so it's not some weird stream thing). I can't really test it on high though...

The only thing that is dislikeable aesthetically in Cactus Valley is the Protoss thing around the XNT. Apart from that it's just so good and beautiful.
I don't like that the unpathable areas on Adun Shrine look exactly the same as the normal pathable part of the map. It's not exactly confusing, but it's weird.
Everytime I look at Echo I can't believe how beautiful it is. These aesthetics are what I subconsciously had in mind when doing Broken Promises (alas, I am no Uvantak).

Haha yeah. Seriously though it's amazing how this map just feels so Protoss without many Protoss decals.

Atm it's all about Parting for her, which is the main reason she's watching with me tonight. What do girls see in a Protoss?! Is it their 2 base potential? My Nydus play can be as strong as that... Sometimes..

Make sure she knows that one can't just repick his main race, but there are plenty of other girls in the world... If she is a keeper, she'll understand!
I got her to cheer for Zerg players whenever we watch SC2 together, so she's not completely lost. ZvP is when its problematic.
She also said I play like Life. And I kinda like to think that she knows how terribly wrong that is but says it to make me feel happy.
So, she's keeper material.

I think there was a thread about how much more swag Protoss players had than Zerg/Terran ones...
I reached the Round of 16, and I got crushed by SortOf, and it was amazing! I didn't feel I had a shot against him at any point, but to be able to face him was just soooooo cool! Thanks TLMC and thank you, pros who participate =)
After Casting and watching the games My map ranks: 1. Ganymede 2. Echo 3. Cactus Valley 4. Coda 5. Neo Emerald 6. Adun's Shrine 7. Timberwolf
If Cactus Valley goes through, I would suggest to force cross positions, or at least Cross/Vertical. Overall the KTV maps(Echo/Ganymede) have been fundamentally designed well, not a lot of gimmicks on them, with minimal rocks. No golds, or in base expansions. Ganymede is very open across the board, which might pose a few concerns, but overall a better version of polar night. Most of the other maps are faily open and not too choked up. Good in size.
Adun's base layout forces quicker fights and closer positioning between players. First 3rd base option is tucked nicely between rocks, but has a low ground vulnerability next to it. Second third base option is slightly more tucked in to the main, but in the open. Games were very lackluster on it.
Timberwolf just is a mess of rocks, golds, boosted areas. It's that typical map that Blizz likes to add to bring in diversity to the map pool and to piss off the community.

Vertical and Horizontal are I believe the same rush distance etc. Is it not templar?

Thanks to anyone in the LR that participated in the tournament. I am super proud to have made top 16, it was pretty awesome to get destroyed by SortOf =)
I really liked the tournament. In my opinion the best map was ECHO, because it seems to be well balanced in all machups, but unexpectedly my favourite map is Cactus Valley with its own interessting and unusual design.
Congrats to PartinG, I fell asleep after my match so I may have to go back and watch some of these games, get a real feel for some of these maps. Hopefully we can have more stuff like this in future? :D
NIce event, thx TL. next time though be sure to hold such tournament before opening the votes, it would make more sense and give more consistency to the results.
As much as I appreciate Uvantak's effort to build a philosophy around how the center of the maps should be like (his chessboard thing) I'm not sure it really benefits to the fluidity of the late game, but that's propably just me...
First time I hear my map being (too?) bright. Only thing I changed, as I recall, was the color of the fog. I can't check it closer as I'm currently at work, but would like to know from more people what they think of it. (and other stuff if any)

Meh people are just so used to dark/very dark maps that they can't stand a normal-looking map, that's all d:
Thanks for setting this up, as a lazy person i like tournaments where you only register at TL. Also i really hope that Cactus Vally turns out to be balanced that map has such a clean look compared to Aduns Shrine for example where I can barely tell the pathways by looking at the minimap. As for the other maps i like Echo, Ganymede and Coda they look pretty clean as well, Timberwolf looks decent and Neo Emrald Plaza clearly suffers from the 'Dustin Browder Syndrome'. There is no need to overload a map with so many 'features', keep it simple its just platform, the game is dynamic enaugh in itself.

I second that. Looking forward to more events like this!

That would have been ideal, in fact that's what we had originally planned for but we we're really, really hard pressed for time, and it was somewhat of a last minute idea. Next time around though, things will be much smoother.
Huge props to Zeromus who basically did 100% of the organizing for this, he put a ton of hours in such a short amount of time to ensure everything got done and things went smoothly.
This was the first time I ever "signed for a tournament". I knew I was going to get absolutely wrecked but it was such a thrill and experience and it also made me follow the rest of the tourney which I would otherwise probably never pay attention to, because I am quite over-SC2-ed from all the premier stuff going on. It's really awesome to let people participate and even more when it means just a few clicks in the familiar TL environment. On top of that, the maps were finely showcased and some good games were seen on streams.
