Welcome this month's edition of the top 50 streamers list.

Table of contents
  • Huh? What's this?
  • Top 50 streamers in October 2014
    • Sorted by avg. viewer
    • Sorted by avg. viewer * hours streamed
    • Stray observations and musings
  • The big picture
  • WCS/GSL
  • Older entries

Huh? What's this?

For those of you who don't already know what this is about: I'm gathering various data (viewers, game, events, etc.) from all the streams that are presented on teamliquid.net (those that you can in the sidebar to your right) and use that data to produce the pretty tables and graphs you see below. The tables only contain SC2 players (that is, streams of people playing games of Starcraft 2) and not casters, teams or other streams. The tables also only contain Starcraft 2 related activities. So, for instance when CatZ is streaming Dota2, it will not be taken into account.

The data I gather is then turned into the tables you see below. One is sorted by the average viewers, the other is sorted by the average viewers times the hours streamed. The latter table favors those that stream a lot, while the former table favors popular streamers regardless of how much they stream. Either ranking has its advantages and disadvantages, and thus I present both.

For either table, I have a minimum required stream time of 5 hours to be included in the list.

The list

Due to space limitations, I have to shorten the headers and leave some data out of the tables presented here. You can get the full tables from the links below.
The headers aren't as clear as I'd like them to be thanks to this, so here's a quick explanation, just in case: "Viewers" denotes the average viewers in the given month. "Hours" are the hours played. "Place diff" and "Viewer diff" are the place and viewer differences compared to last month.

Also, the HTML version linked beneath the images has some more information that I had to leave out due to space limitation, most notably the featured status of the players.

Now, Without further ado, here's this month's tables:

Stray observations and musings

  • Winter has been dethroned! Congratulations to Destiny for once again taking the number one spot for average viewers last month. #PassionConfirmed
  • However, Winter remains the king of the Viewers*Hours category. Even with close to 60 hours streamed less, he's got a comfortable lead over #2, Destiny.
  • The top 5 streamers last month all gained a healthy amount of viewers, despite overall numbers being down slightly (more on that below).
  • Notable streamers who made it to last month's list, but did not make it this month or who did not stream at all: Jaedong, Parting, DRG, Solar.
  • If you find any mistakes or errors in the lists, please do let me know, especially concerning team changes or players that you are absolutely sure should be on the lists, but are not.

The big picture

(The actual numbers are not important, it's the ratio between month that's important.)

Note that these are player streams only.

Player stream viewers are down slightly. Not too surprising, given the presence of the global finals last month.

WCS/GSL

Let me be the first to point out that the global finals numbers are not representative at all. An average(!) of 87.000 viewers for the finals doesn't sound bad at all, but these are only twitch.tv viewer numbers. In addition to Twitch, people could watch the global finals on youtube, douyou (chinese streaming site), on the blizzcon website itself, on ESPN3, and on probably a few more streaming services not mentioned here.

You can see a more detailed look at the numbers from twitch and youtube over at fuzic, where they peaked at close to 150.000 viewers. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Oh, also, there's the Hot6 cup, which has gotten pretty respectable numbers for a Korean tournament so far.

That's all for this month. Hope you guys enjoyed, as always. Any kind of feedback is always welcome!

Poor broadcast time, probably. IIRC it was at 10 in the morning on weekdays in EU: US is asleep and EU at work.

Not everyone is in school and can do that every day man... even I try but it doesn't always work.

Yep, I expected a way lower value of stream viewer numbers since there were so many tournaments (DH, WCS, HSC etc).

Hoping LotV will be good and makes SC2 even more entertaining.

Please feature the overall viewership with tournaments included. I gave you grief last month and you completly ignored my request. MLG is not in the sc2 scene anymore and I feel that it's a disservice to the Starcraft scene by not giving us a complete picture of the viewership.

ForGG's 300 hours is that because he also rebroadcasts? or is he just that insane?

Even though "disservice" is a too strong word, imo, I too would like to see the overall graph return. It's hard to get the same kind of overview on fuzic.

I agree that it's stretching the situation but it's a pet peeve of mine to see these Top 50 streamers thread be incomplete.

Hah, I wasn't too clear on that one, admittedly. He streamed 60 hours less compared to his own previous month's numbers, and still managed to stay on top of the list.

There was a big drop in October, but not too much happened in October. Then global finals happened in November. Other than that, things are pretty much stable, from the looks of it. I'm probably going to include this graph again in the following year, unless MLG spontaneously decides to get back into SC2 for real again.

It will always miss Chinese viewers anyway
I used to organize tournaments for ESL Italy and referee Go4SC2s, WCSs, and IEMs for ESL SC2.
