One weekend can’t contain all of this year’s BlizzCon eSports action. With the StarCraft II World Championship Series Global Finals, Hearthstone World Championship, and World of Warcraft Arena World Championship all culminating this year at BlizzCon 2014, we needed an extra weekend to squeeze in all of the competitions—and to make sure everyone has a chance to take in as many of the tournaments and events during BlizzCon as possible.
That’s why this year, the global finals for all Blizzard eSports tournaments will get underway a week early at a special World Championship Opening Weekend event taking place at ESL’s Burbank, CA studio October 31 through November 2. There, we’ll be hosting the first rounds of the StarCraft II WCS Global Finals, Hearthstone World Championship, and World of Warcraft Arena World Championship global finals. Of course, you’ll be able to watch it all live online beginning October 31 on our Twitch World Championship Series, Hearthstone, and World of Warcraft channels.
StarCraft II World Championship Series 2014 Global Finals
Prize Pool: $250,000 Number of Players: 16 World Championship Opening Weekend Schedule: Saturday, November 1, 10am–10pm PT
The Global Finals will follow last year’s tried and true format. The top 16 players in the WCS Global Standings will be seeded into a single elimination bracket. All matches of the Round of 16 bracket will take place November 1. Eight of the 16 players will advance to the Round of 8 matches (played at BlizzCon November 7), while the 8 players who are eliminated will still have a chance to take the stage at BlizzCon in special StarCraft II exhibition matches.

Talk about unprofessionalism.

I think sOs approves of this idea lol. They should be able to broadcast every match with a single stream this way, I know when I was at Blizzcon last year I was killing my phone trying to watch the B stream lol.

I've read the article. I think it is unfortunate but not necessarily unprofessional to have the foresight to get a working schedule (now all matches can be on a main stream instead of some held in the back room on a B stream last year!)
But you can continue to be rude if you want

I might not have tickets to Blizzcon, but I DO have directions to Burbank. Hmm...Halloween...
|
Good for us viewers. And no more stupid b-stage for the players hopefully.

Try not being an obnoxious asshole.
Nothing strikes me as particularly unprofessional. If you're going to make a statement like that at least state what it is that you think is wrong with the post.

I'm glad there won't be any off-stage games this year!
Hopefully a lot of fans show up to watch the games in the studio =o

reddit brings up the interesting point though that it kinda screws over the players who qualified for "Blizzcon" and then lose before Blizzcon lol

That's why they added the showmatches. This way, everyone who qualified will still play at Blizzcon.

Awesome news, I love this!

Absolutely good decision.

I am neutral about this. It sort of diminishes the qualification to Blizzcon for those who lose first round, and showmatches really might not make it up for those players.
It is good that they will stream all matches from Ro8 onwards on mainstage.

Meh, half of the biggest tournament of the year played in front of 20 people ? I'm sorry but it kills the hype. One of the most important things that makes a tournament amazing is the atmosphere. I'm already pissed off that the regional season finals are played in a studio and not in a theater / real venue but WCS Global Finals now ?

kill the WoW arena tournament and use the additional stage to show all of SC2 at blizzcon!!

Technically it's not WORSE than last year, where some players played all their matches behind the curtain in side stream matches

They should also rebroadcast all of duckdeok's games from last year to make up for the fact that nobody saw how awesome they were

I don't blame them for this, there is way too much content for 1 weekend, but it does suck that some of the players won't get to go to blizzcon

I think last year was worse in that regard, with the off stage games. Atleast now players now about it and its not random.

they should make the players offrace or something interesting, since they will be playing for nothing essentially

As someone who went to Blizzcon last year I think i like this deicision. Last year I felt i didnt really ahve time to explore the venue without missing a match. Also I really hope with this, they will set up autograph sessions with the players which they didnt last year (outisde of sOs at the very end)

Depends on what you call "fairly large". Probably seated about sixty for Championship Weekend last season. They oversold tickets for the Top Four, so they had to expand with a arced-out extra set of sponsor chairs and have people sit on the edges of the bleachers. With some creativity, I'd imagine they can make some more seating room for these matches, though.

I'm happy we shamed them into putting all matches on main stage this time.

Like if we had a bo9 where Life only had to win 1 against San, I still think I'd bet on San.

Oh wow...
I mean yeah, they really effed this one up. Being ranked in top 16 meant, hey we see you as one of the top 16 players in the world and we will invite you to our prestigious conference.
And now is like... but you have to pass the first round.

I'm sorry but it kills the hype. One of the most important things that makes a tournament amazing is the atmosphere. I'm already pissed off that the regional season finals are played in a studio and not in a theater / real venue but WCS Global Finals now ? I think it'll draw a decent crowd. The ESL studio in California is fairly large I think Depends on what you call "fairly large".
They took out the bleachers so they can line up more chairs for S3 finals / granchamps Ro16, most likely.

now this would be magical lol ~ 0.13 % chance to see Flash vs StarDust as a first match at Blizzcon.

So they will show the ro8 on the 7th and the rest on the 8th?
and will they be able to show all ro16 maches at 1 day?
l´this seems really bad for half of the players. the huge crowd at Blzzcon is why they are there.
|
So you are telling me I get to watch awesome sc2 games a week before blizzcon on a main stage and not hidden on a b stage at blizzcon? Fahking amazing dunno how anyone could complain about this AND they said they'll have showmatches for the losers at blizzcon awesome stuff. Win win for players and viewers
|
Makes sense. I am looking forward to THE GAMES
|
I'm all for this from a logistical standpoint. This lets every player play on the main stage and the schedule is much more practical. From an online viewer standpoint this is also great, no more b stream nonsense. For the offline viewers, players, and people who enjoy hyped crowds this sucks in some ways. The crowd is going to be small, that venue won't even hit 100 spectators. 8 of the top 16 players of 2014, who have been working so hard for this all year get to play on the same stage as Neeb (ily Neeb but seriously). Very few people will get to see the top 16 live. I'm positive that those tickets will sell out pretty quickly. All in all they hype just won't quite be there. Now I know this is all STILL preferable to last year's "Oh look sOs beat HerO while nobody was watching" but it isn't preferable to what they could've done. Imo they should have booked a nearby venue with the capacity to host such a prestigious event.

guys guys, you all miss the point here, blizzcon should be week long, not weekend!

special exhibition matches?

good decision, sucks that some players got shafted on stage time last year. ideally we could have every match on the main stage at blizzcon but there isn't enough time for that.

I like this decision. While I think there should be more players in the global finals, playing games off-stream at the tournament of the year is a big no.

Burbank? That's 3 hours away from Anaheim with LA traffic. The 5 sucks.

People already bought Blizzcon passes thinking they would see all 16 players :/ they can't all be allowed into the Burbank venue, it's too small. Also selling new tickets for this event is also a bit mean to those people. Pros and cons to this

No they weren't, but there is something to be said for them being played live in the building presumably where you could watch a la MLG games that aren't on the main stage. Now in order to see 8 of the players play people who already spent a ton of money on Blizzcon passes have to buy new tickets to an event a week earlier and hours away. No they weren't, but there is something to be said for them being played live in the building presumably where you could watch a la MLG games that aren't on the main stage. Now in order to see 8 of the players play people who already spent a ton of money on Blizzcon passes have to buy new tickets to an event a week earlier and hours away. Anyone who doesn't live in SoCal doesn't have a chance of seeing this. It's not all bad, I'm just pointing out some flaws. From an online viewer perspective, (this is almost) all good news when I was there last year I had no idea where the B stream was being played, the players were hidden somewhere unlike MLG

Good, we can actually watch all the games this time.

You remember IEM toronto? could barely get their schedule working and would have some games into the next day and they even had 2 streams. If blizz did this it would a mess for them. this is really smart imo

That Burbank shot reminds me of the photo of GOMtv's casting area

Agreed.
This decision is for the benefit of everyone that's actually attending Blizzcon.

You cannot compare two 8 player double elimination brackets to 8 single bo5's.
Also, blame Snute and his swarmhosts for the overrun on the first day, all the other days went seamlessly.

They need to redesign swarmhosts in LotV for tournament scheduling purposes.

they can definitely fit more seats if need be. for example to the right side you see next to the TV they sectioned off as a players only kind of area with a sofa. i'm sure they can move that out and fit more seats.

I like this move, we'll be able to watch all the games, and hopefully there'll be a big crowd at Burbank. It was really frustrating watching two streams at once, especially if the B stream had a quarterfinals game like sOs vs Polt or duckdeok vs Maru. Smart decision.

Now that I think about it, this is actually a great idea. Hopefully no more backstage games this year :D

Those tables are new. Maybe they allow more people to be seated that way instead of the bleachers?

A major complaint I remember from the previous year was that you couldn't watch all the games, plus that it felt crammed for being the biggest tournament of the year. From a brief glance, this should address exactly those complaints. Obviously, there are tradeoffs, like people who prefer that it take place over one weekend.

Yeah they took out the bleachers because they didn't have enough room for the finals last season... the table was occupied by Cam/Clutch usually

yeah. also the finals started at around 3:00 that day. The venue itself closes at 5:00 and I was just thinking to myself that a bo7 could easily have gone over 2 hours. Makes me wonder what might have happen if neither player could win 4 games in under 2 hours and whether or not both players were told in advance that they only have 2 hours to complete the finals.

I wish they just had the tournaments extend into Thursday at the Convention center. Lots arrive on Thursday and we would get the great audience. The schedule is tight due to the the closing events on Friday and Thursday. They have to be done by 5pm or so.

Does anyone know how to see the event live in Burbank? Somehow I always hear how to attend events AFTER they happen :/. I tried googling the ESL studio, but couldn't find any info.

ESL usually sells their tickets through Eventbrite, so check there periodically.

Anyone know if Burbank studio events are usually free events or if not, how much tickets usually cost?

Is Burbank a (very) known city for americans or people who live in America? If I google it, doesnt sound so apparently there are ~5 Burbanks in America?!

WCS America events have cost fifteen bucks since ESL took them over. Since this is a global event for multiple games, it might be different.

Burbank, CA is known as somewhat of an entertainment hub. It's got all of the business of Hollywood with absolutely none of the glamour.

Burbank has a lot of film and TV studios... NBC, WB, Disney to name a few have lots in Burbank. Other than that it's a bit of a cookie cutter town with your typical chain theaters/restaurants etc

Showmatches will feature the 4th race Blizzard will surprisingly introduce for LotV

they should just replace protoss instead of adding another.
and they should replace it with... a better protoss.
