Before this they only had 1 player in Socke. They traded 1 expensive player for 3 cheap ones.

See keeping Jaedong instead of aLive, Oz, and Revival.

Getting three players that are at least somewhat known in Germany and regularly appear on German casts/tournaments/etc. can really be worthwhile for Alternate, although none of them has the international appeal of Socke.

(Being owed some money and the contracts being somewhat shady)

well it seems that after TaKe left Alternate as a team manager at the end of 2012 the team fell apart and i dont know who replaced him(no one?). Whatever the situation at alternate sc2 was in 2013, fact is that every player left after their contract ran out.
"Zerocool" is the new manager for 2014 but it seems that when he started, Socke already found a better offer since Alternate was basically doing nothing but laying off all their players an entire year long.
Well those new players are nowhere near in skill and popularity compared to Socke, Darkforce and Cloud last year. Alternate basically went from Top 2 german team to maybe 6th best after Mouz, XMG, AI, ESC and Planetkey

Nope, I mixed up players, it was Cloud saying that: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=439685¤tpage=14#262
edit: too late, should've looked into this thread instead of reading posts in an old thread one by one.

Extremely weak lineup even for the German scene alone. None of them managed to get top 8 of the last ESL Pro Series Germany (Monty finished at the 9th place, KnowMe 11th). None of them even got to top 16 in the current Germany Cup V. KauP lost to Hanfy and to an unknown protoss Levi. KnowMe got completely destroyed by Lambo and TLO and decided to forfeit his last match.
Never was a huge fan of Socke, but he is way better than these three combined.

Kaup is not bad at all I think, maybe he can go far with a professional team?
|
Anyways, happy to see Knowme under a team already. Apart from Heromarine, he is one of the few German players who stream regularly.
|
I think Knowme should be given an Incontrol-like position at Alternate. He is well spoken, has a good relationship with the community, can cast and I think he would be a good team manager, too.

Awesome, those guys will surely be profiting a lot from such a team and its infrastructure (Team house etc.)

This and their League team left the organization and joined Millenium so I guess that freed up some money too.
