Welcome back to another season of Proleague! Almost five months since STX SouL claimed the championship over Woongjin Stars on August 3rd, the oldest and most prestigious team tournament in StarCraft returns with a slew of major changes. Here's a short summary of the most important details:
Format changed to Bo5 from Bo7(ace match remains).
"A team must field one player of each race" rule removed.
Four regular season rounds down from last season's six, but with a twist: each round has its own "playoff" tournament with a round champion.
Instead of going purely by record, a point system will determine regular season standings (based on final rank at the end of a round).
STX SouL, Woongjin Stars and EG-TL are out, MVP, IM and Prime are in.
Team rosters have changed drastically. More info here. For our analysis of these changes, click here.
Alright, got that? Here are the week one match-ups:
With the change from Bo7 to Bo5, it is only natural that the weaker players on each team have been forced out of the line-ups, thus making most matches (I'm sorry, Prime) more competitive. Depth is now more of a luxury than a necessity, and teams with top heavy rosters like KT could go far without having a strong supporting cast.
Here are some things to note for the first week:
MVP is fielding Shine. The MVP Zerg has looked less than great for a long time now, but the fact that he's being sent out twice while DRG and Super are being used just once must mean something.
Team MVP is also deploying Sniper. After not playing a televised game in three months, it seems like Sniper (this time with the help of Shine) has once again stolen DRG's thunder.
Prime isn't fielding ByuN at all in the first week. Considering the fact that he was Prime's only saving grace in their horrendous GSTL campaign, it means that Prime has either created a monstrous team of unknowns while we weren't looking, or that there's something up with ByuN.
No TvTs in Week 1.
5 PvP, 1 ZvZ, 11 PvZ, 5 PvT, 1 TvZ
Must Watch Matches: Week 1
Even with the length of the matches reduced to best of five, it's hard for anyone but the most devoted fan to watch every Proleague game in a week. To help you all out, here are our recommendations.
The opening match of Proleague could either be thrilling classic or a complete stomp. With the addition of Soulkey, SKT have assembled the most deadly team in Proleague. Not only is Soulkey an individual league champion and the most consistently great player in Korea, he was also the ace of the former SPL runners-up Woongjin Stars. On one hand, the total upending of parity and balance between teams is worrisome. On the other hand, you have to be fascinated by the creation of this super team.
MVP's players are about as consistent as the price of bitcoin, fluctuating between championship-level and junk, sometimes in the same match. Would it be shocking to see MVP score the upset against SKT? Not really. Would it be shocking to see them utterly crushed? Nope, that's in the cards too.
DRG is perhaps the epitome of inconsistency, playing some of his life's best ZvT against Innovation in WCS Korea Season 3 and convincing everyone that he was back to being his old self before getting curb-stomped in the Ro16. Dream, Keen and Super – all pinned as 'the next big thing' at one time or another – share DRG's proclivity for unreliability.
Against a line-up like SKT's, it would be foolish to bet on the entire MVP line-up bringing their A-game, but you get the feeling that at least one of them is going to play fantastic and steal a map off SKT. All four of the match-ups for MVP are winnable on a good day. By tuning into this match, you're accepting that you may be served some of the most intense Starcraft II in the world, or three consecutive bops and a ceremony. Both would be entertaining, to be sure, but for completely different reasons.
Rain almost lost the Hot6ix Cup to Soulkey two weeks ago. There, his ability to stay calm in the face of pressure and make the correct calls allowed him to persevere and take the championship. It was a series that showed why he is Artosis' dream player: a safe and standard macro Protoss whose strengths lie in the defensive aspects of the game.
Dream is his polar opposite. He is everything Rain isn't: hyper-aggressive, risk-seeking, and fond of many battles rather than few. It isn't rare that Dream bites off more than he can chew with his aggression and finds himself behind as a result, but his complete dedication to attacking often lets him get back into the game. Keeping up with Dream's tempo is no easy task, and many players have found themselves tripping over their feet.
The dynamic for the match is the the classic immovable object vs. unstoppable force. Rain, the dedicated defender who'll take his time and only move out when he feels he has the victory within reach, versus Dream, a wild berserker who has broken Rain's shield in the past.
More than any other player in Proleague, Flash is intimately familiar with what it's like to carry a team. Thus, the change to Bo5 must have had Flash leaping for joy. No longer does he have to hope that the weak KT bench can win enough games to force an ace match – the trio of him and his lieutenants Zest and Stats are enough to claim victory. The addition of TY (Baby) didn't wow anyone like the Soulkey or sOs signings, but it was still a good move for KT. They now have a strong core four, capable of going up against any team in the league.
Even so, their match against CJ will be a tough one. Despite not signing any big players, the acquisition of former SKT and EG-TL head coach Park Yong Woon has more than made up for it. The team's overall skill level has risen dramatically under his regime – Hydra, Effort, and herO showed potential last season, but they've truly gotten it together in the off-season. herO looked incredible as he beat his countrymen to win IEM Singapore, while Sora made a strong run up to second place in WCG. Additionally the online qualifier scene has been dominated by CJ Entus players, with team-kills being the most frequent cause for their elimination. Even Bbyong, dubbed the heir to the Ensnare throne, blazed through the IEM Sao Paulo qualifiers just last weekend, showing that he's much more than the generic Terran player he was before.
Compared to CJ, KT players have barely shown themselves after the end of the last Proleague season. It's hard to judge exactly where they're at, but right now KT feels a bit lacking when compared man-for-man to CJ Entus. Even so, we know from last season that Proleague is where they bring their best performances.
Devoted fans of the Korean scene will have seen Sora's name popping up all over the place these last few months. Since his stunning WCG Korea performance, CJ's latest recruit has been making waves both online and offline. He brought home another silver from the WCG Grand Finals where he finished second behind Soulkey, and has been doing well in IEM qualifiers (but is getting team-killed constantly).
Flash has been receiving attention for different reasons. Lacklustre performances at Dreamhack Bucharest and IEM New York, and narrow elimination from yet another difficult group in the GSL have many fans wondering if Flash is truly championship caliber in StarCraft 2. He has played a total of five broadcasted games over the last two and a half months, easily dispatching CoCa in Code A and then getting easily dispatched of by CJ's Bunny.
The rapid improvement he was showing after the initial transition to StarCraft 2 has slowed down considerably, and he did nothing in the off-season to make us think otherwise. Normally, five games doesn't provide enough information to extrapolate anything meaningful, but what was most worrying about Flash was the manner in which he lost his games. He didn't look helpless, but he did look lost at times. Throw Sora's 80% PvT into the equation and things look grim for Flash going into his first match of the season.
But if there is anywhere Flash feels that he is completely in his element, it has to be Proleague. He was arguably Proleague's best player last season, finishing with the most wins while dragging his team to the playoffs. Sora, on the other hand, is a complete rookie in Proleague. If they both play at their best, and we can be reasonably sure that at least Flash will, this match could be a great one, and the one to decide how the teams start off their season.
Hipster Match of the Week + Predictions
This week's Hipster MotW features Samsung Khan going up against whoever they're going to lose to. Samsung weren't good last season, and the "retirement" of their ace JangBi left them looking like a bottom two team headed into the new season. With expectations at an all-time low, Samsung have brought out the most unexpected line-up of week one. They've fielded three relative newcomers in Solar, Trend and eMotion, dropped RorO, and kept only Stork from last season's regulars. On paper it's a team that could even lose to Prime, but you have to assume the former b-teamers improved a lot during the off-season and earned their starts.
You have to commend Samsung for being willing to take risks. They have absoultely nothing to lose this season, and many fans are already assuming they're going to finish close to last. At worst, Samsung will ride their newcomers to the bad finish everyone is expecting anyway. At best, they can be like last year's Team Eight, with multiple players stepping up out of nowhere to put them in playoff contention. Hipster team of the week? Hipster team of the season, we say.
Week 1 predictions: SKT > MVP IM > Prime Samsung < Jin Air KT < CJ MVP > IM SKT > Prime
I kind of liked the rule stating a team should field at least 1 of each race, now we are guaranteed even more PvP unless the map makers from KeSPA start going full anti protoss maps, like unblinkable mains, safe nats, tucked away ramps between main and nat, far away and open 3rds etc.
KT vs CJ is going to be sick, especially Sora vs Flash. But come on guys, Stork vs Maru and ... TY(BaBy) vs herO[jOin] is going to be awesome too (if they're is no 3 - 0).
Some great TvP !
Finally, Last word i wanted to say : " In my Mind Mind Mind " ... MINDTIME FOR THE WIN yo
The only prediction I disagree with is MVP > IM. IM has got that one for sure Also can't wait for Sora vs. Flash (I put Sora on my FPL team assuming he will beat Flash) HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE
oh god guys please stop about the balance and race distribution complaints. you can be pretty sure that the players that play here didn't pick protoss because they knew it would be a bit imba 1 year later. they picked protoss, because they played it in brood war or they think it was the most stylish one. im also pretty sure that the coach played them because they are the best players for the given situation and not because "they are protoss, they win ezpz".
i also do not like the distribution that hard, but if you dont like it you dont have to watch it, noone forces you to watch this weeks proleague. besides that: heads up these: guys, proleague is every week, these rosters is just for one week, next week there might be even a bit more terrans playing or you might get lucky and see a tvt *-*
tl;dr guys calm down. its just for one week and if you dont like it dont watch
Can't wait, this will be the best season of PL ever, sooo many good players The matches of the first play day are great, MVP vs SKT will be closer than many think, though SKT is the clear fav of course. Already looking forward to all the fanboi tears when Sora stomps Flash.

Really ? Best Season of PL ever ? Dude, a PL without Bisu can't be the best season ever

I just hope PartinG does well, I also hope Rain doesn't fail in ace matches as last season and I hope FanTaSy can play more over the course of the PL. I also hope that CJ will rock under command of Coach Park aswell as I hope that SK doesn't fill the SKT Zerg line.
Hmh overall this seems quite CJ - SKT fanboi-ic. I hope they both get into finals

I have to agree on that one haha
I should maybe clarify that I never cared for BW, so it's looking to be the best out of a pool of 2.5 Proleagues

Yep you should. This still doesn't change the fact that this:

looks kinda silly if you "never cared for BW" and make such judgements based on 2 Proleagues.

From the two (and a half if you want to count Frankenstein PL) I think this is going to be the best yet IN MY OPINION. I'm just hyped for it. Gosh, why do some people have to always be so negative about everything? Drives me crazy.
Prime already going full IM coach here xD Like you said the bo5 format really does cater for the smaller squads so the ability to field a strong line up without having the squad size of IM or SKT T1 should be in Primes benefit, but when their best player isn't in their first two matches you must think WTF is going on!
On paper these matches look to be won already, but as in any sport, things do change. People get better, people get lucky, some people don't even turn up. So lets find out what happens over this exciting week 1 :D
I still hope for MarineKing to come back to SC2 and Prime will 3-0 SKT1. Because Bisu sees that and Bisu think SKT1 cant do shits without him, he comes back and allkills everyone.
I kinda wish we could see more than 4 players from each team (Im assuming ace match would probably just be one of the first 4 players and not a new one, tho I guess this could happen) Also that Prime lineup... .... ...........

Hes a mercenary for IM, which i dont know why its even allowed, only players on the team should be able to play IMO. Why not just let jaedong play for jin air? let half of startale play for prime...

I too would like to know how or why this is allowed. Keep a small roster, then go pull the best player you can find from a non-proleague team!
Enjoyed today's cast though, the creator game was a hoot. Really looking forward to Flash's game on Monday.

Because he lives in the IM house which pretty much makes him a member of the team, the only difference is who is paying him.

Them partnerships anyway, I'm laughing at the other guys response because I'd hardly consider HerO one of the best options at the moment because he's really not been playing well in pvps. As for Jaedong and other guys going. Yeah, I'm getting tired of these partnerships. Shows you just how unsustainable it is. It's not like IM don't have enough players as is because they do. Heck, they even went out to pick up Trap who I'd say is a little bit better at the moment when it comes to PvP. Yes, it allows HerO stay and train in Korea in a team house, but I really think players should just switch teams if they want to do things like this because they shouldn't be allowed to get the best of both worlds. There needs to be a little more of a trade off.
In addition I find sc2links.com to be a simple way to navigate spoiler-free VODs; much better than trying to go directly through Youtube which is rife with spoilers (you open a playlist for a match and see it has only 3 videos; guess what that means...?):
