As the manager of your team, you should have stepped in from the beginning to stop them from talking to your players or making promises to them until you spoke to them yourself and made a signed agreement on everything. If they weren't willing to sign an actual contract then you shouldn't have tried to work with them. Any company that legitimately works with e-Sports teams would have talked to you first and made a signed agreement with you first.

I know the actual scam wasn't your fault and I don't mean to say this as if I'm blaming you, but I just hope people learn from these things and will take more proper actions when so called "sponsors" try to come in and just make deals by them saying they will fulfill what they claim to offer.
