I've been trying to tune in to DH all day yesterday and today, but I have gotten a consistent stuttering. I went over to a friend and the same shit was going on there. Is it something with my area or does others have similar problems? I know it is not my bandwidth or anything like that, at least that is very unlikely.

It is basicly impossible for me to follow DH with a stream like that, it really screwed up a really anticipated tournament for me.

Do anyone have similar problems and if so, are there any solutions to solving the problem?

It is twitch. They have issues across Europe.Lol streams were having the same issues. At one moment the streams were virtually unwatchable.I watched the lol streams on the garena youtube livestream. For starcraft there was no sollution.Just have to deal with it.
Btw youtube livestream does not have any lag.

twitch has server issues that's on-and-off.
one day i can be streaming fine, on another i could be stuttering on 240p
afaik there's no fixes for it other than dealing with it or refreshing every once in a while

There are good days and bad days. Weekends seem to be worse as there are more people watching, and due to lack of data centers in Europe the overflow is routed to for example the US. Which is where the lag is coming from. Twitch is adding 3 centers in Europe soonish, so that should fix it.

Yea working well for me but a friend of mine who lives in another part of the country with another ISP can't use twitch at all when big events are on, I actually have to share my screen with him through Skype. Let's hope those new data centers are set up soon!

I have same problems. Everybody should report it using the twitch feature. If half the people whining reported it, maybe they would speed up the solution.

Just had unwatchable lag on everything (even 240p) for half an hour trying everything to fix it, especially refreshing a lot.
But somehow after randomly changing it to 720p again it now works completely smoothly. Guess I just got lucky and got a closer/better server this time? Can't close stream the whole day now I guess :D

Yeah i thought the issue would be something like this, makes sense. Thank god they are opening some more ;_;

After reading that, he suggest that when it isn't "overloaded" in the EU with viewers, that it is fine, but when it reaches its current cap, then it overflows and you have to re route the stream to California/Kansas servers so thats when the lag occurs, but then it will be only for some people.

+ Show Spoiler [His Answer] +

Question:
How can you explain that all video data being streamed from EU gets routed to NA, Kansas/California and other states ??
Isn't this a major routing flaw in your product? This issue has been quite prevailing for the past couple of weeks and so far viewers have not received any official answers.

Answer:
When we run out of EU capacity, we spillover to the US rather than either A) overloading EU servers, or B) refusing to serve new viewers.

We're opening 3 new datacenters shortly in the EU for just this reason.

They should just use a better stream service than Twitch, they're incapable of providing stable streams in Europe. Which makes it a bad choice for a Europe-based event, one would think. ~~

Have you tried refreshing the page a few times? Twitch connects you to a different server every time and it seems pretty random instead of being based on load.

I am in NA and have really incredible lag sometimes, but then I relaunch the stream until it gives me a smooth connection. Usually it takes about 3 tries.

Or Twitch should use an established CDN themselves instead of trying to build out their own.

They did add akamai CDN to their service at one time in the past when MLG was waffling between using them or using akamai directly. I don't think they use it any more so I guess they weren't satisfied with their reduced profit margins.

It may be cheaper to use their own servers but it's obviously inferior and they will always be playing catchup when it comes to adding capacity.

Well normally you would expect them to use their own capacity, but also link with a CDN to provide spillover when required.
It seems they have been too slow in building out their own capacity and also aren't making use of any third party CDN in the meantime, which means poor service for viewers.

But hey, they have almost got a monopoly so unfortunately they don't need to care too much.

It's the same as every weekend/every big event with Twitch, nearly impossible to watch for people in Europe. Twitch has always been shitty for a lot of viewers in Europe.

Try refreshing a couple of times. You might get lucky and be connected to a server that works better for you.

Weirdly all the streams work perfectly for me as long as I watch them thru tl.net, but if I accidentally click the stream and go to twitch.tv, it works awfully.

Yeah, it is a good tip. Yesterday I tried to watch some games on twitch site and it was awful, chokes every 5-10 seconds... Today I'm watching via TL and works perfectly@720p.

I am watching with 720+ without single lag...i think you guys should check you pcs...really. Why is it always an steam issue or twitch issue?

I dont have an hardcore pc or big internet connection...no lag at all. Perfect stream for DH. I only use dreamhackTV Stream...

No, we bash Twitch because it's a Twitch issue.
When a significant number of people have the EXACT SAME issue, then the issue is likely not their fault.
In this instance we know that it's a Twitch issue, because everyone has the same issue, and it doesn't matter what the end user does, including changing resolution.

When 720p, 720, 480, 360 all do the exact same thing, and refreshing the stream enough times to get a different server fixes the issue, what do you think the cause of the problem is?
Hint: it's Twitch.

People are "bashing" Twitch because they are the problem.

They don't. This rule is only for tournaments that don't want to ask for a license from Blizzard. Before the tournament guidelines were updated, every tournament had to ask Blizzard for a license. So nothing has changed for them.

And Twitch sponsors every bigger tournament anyway. So they won't use other services.

They've said it's due to them spilling over to US servers and that it will be fixed when they install 3 new centers in the europe.

because they are an excellent service that's getting 3 new centers to fix this exact problem?

Again, it is a known problem for god knows how long by now and even admitted by twitch itself and they are working on it.
Are you really trying to say its people's PC that is at fault here when the company itself saids otherwise?

It's not your connection that's the bottleneck.

Hmm, I haven't had any problems today at all. I did tune in very early though. Yesterday I had alot of lag when I came online around 18:00 CET.
Maybe they prioritize the first XXX.XXX viewers and then the rest goes on the small pile of lower rate?

edit : viewing 720p +

yup, when the EU servers are full, people get redirected to twitch servers in NA

Yeah i thought the issue would be something like this, makes sense. Thank god they are opening some more ;_;

The problem is, however, that Twitch has been opening new data centers for 2 and a half years. The service has been horribly broken more often than not, which is a shame and a real issue

oh thought they already added them and was quiet worried haha.

Anyway try different qualities if you have this stuttering, even the better quality might be lag free (yesterday it was 720p, today its another quality that works well for me heh). And twitch might not like it, but don't watch 10 streams at once xD.

I would go as far to say that TwitchTV is actually a major hindrance to esports. More data centers coming to EU, well I've been hearing that for a long time..

Kinda awesome also when you're at Dreamhack and trying to watch Twitch stream, but not working at all, despite the LOADS of twitch tv ad posters all over the place, and the fastest internet in the world. A great sponsor for the event indeed.

Yeah when a tournament's twitch streams runs well for me that's actually the rare exception. Right now the main Sc2 and the main English Dota 2 stream are mostly in complete garbage stability. I've basically got 2-3s of stream and then it cuts out for 3-4s, incl. audio. It's just so unbelievable annoying. Switching quality does nothing at all.

(Germany, Lower Saxony, Kabel Deutschland 32mb down and 2mb up). Having no other issues with my connection atm and turned into the Swedish, non-twitch stream for the Thorzain vs Naniwa game and it ran perfectly fine.

I have zero faith in twitch that this shit will get better anytime soon... meaning not within the next couple years.

You're from the US so you're not supposed to have problems with twitch.
They have too few data centers in Europe, so viewers in Europe have to deal with this shit at the peak viewing hours. Mostly on sundays and whenever there is a big event.
Twitch has been bad for years for European viewers and it has gotten worse after own3d died.
With own3d viewers from the US had the same problems and it was fine for EU.

For me the stream was perfect so far, except for a short time (~1 minute) where the whole twitch site wouldn't load.

this helped me, smooth 720p now, you might need to reset your router/computer.

it will lag for a short while when you open the stream but it will set down.

hope it helps

Also stopped watching DH on friday and saturday after prolonged stuttering. Very dissapointed in Twitch. Will tune in today, if it stutters again I wont be wasting my time any longer. This coming from 100mbit up and down from my work in Amsterdam (working the weekends -yes) and asymetrical 60 back home in Utrecht.

For me to watch these events in decent quality, I have to wait for the events to be over and download/"buffer" each 30 min block of the VoD if there is one. I miss out otherwise. Would be nice if they dual streamed it on YouTube so it's actually watchable by the rest of the world that doesn't have data centres in their region.

Having major problems today with Twitch on SC2 Proleague and DreamHack over the last 2 days. I haven't seen any of DreamHack at all really tbh because of the stuttering. Usually watch in 420 and i am having no issues with other providers such as Youtube.

What i have noticed is that the adverts during the streams are silky smooth every time, so personally i think this is twitch throttling the bandwidth

Use desktop live streamer.
Eliminates a lot of lag due to not having to use crappy flash player.

So because everyone that has lags doesn't post on TL means a minority of people have lags ? Twitch has been stuttering for me all week-end -only twitch obviously when azubu.tv was up for LoL it was perfectly fine- and it is the same for ALL of my friends. Do they all post on TL? No. Hell you just have to check the awful twitch chat for 15 seconds to understand the problem is widespread. Twitch themselves acknowledged it, all we can do is wait (and complain I guess so we feel a little better).

No it doesn't say that a minority of the europeans have lag issues, but it also doesn't state that a majority have lag issues. All we know is that europeans have issues, not how many or how little.

x) such nonsense. Twitch just is fucking horrid. I've been watching from dozens and dozens of places in Europe, and it's always the same crap. Just about every single person I've talked to has confirmed this experience.

Twitch has been awful for most of Europe lately.

Oh please, you have no idea how many or how little viewers in europe have had problems.
Speak for yourself, not for the millions of twitch users in europe, when only ~2000, have voiced themselves.

European twitch viewers have had problems with twitch, during peak hours - Correct
Most european twitch viewers have had problems with tiwtch, during peak hours - A wild guess, maybe correct, maybe not. But unsupported info = bad info.

When the company itself saids they need new equipment and admitting fault, you can be pretty sure its not a small minority, those can get simply ignored.

Did we get an official statement from Twitch so far on the issue during this week end ?

Having a 100mb connection and not being able to watch the tournament even in 360p is pretty infuriating to be honest... :-(.

Having issues aswell. Not today, but on saturday and sunday I had a lot of stuttering, even on 480p. I have 100/10 internet so I don't think that's the issue.

Hopefully I wont have any problems during the finals, that would suck.

I have the same problem and I live in the states. Everytime twitch has a big tournament that is streaming, every stream gets affected.. Its annoying to all people. I can only watch on 360, sometimes only 240. When there is no major tournament, I can watch at max settings.

Can say I have had a little bit of stuttering but nothing which has made Dreamhack unwatchable.

With the second semi the stream started to stutter pretty bad - that sucks rly much... so many problems over and over again with twitch in EU. One day it works, the other it does not and thats for pretty much 6 months now. Too bad that there are no real alternatives, becuz I do not really want to support them anymore. (Still not turning on Adblock though, to support the streamers...)

I believe some of this is in-game. It didn't seem like normal stream-lag.

That being said, it was odd that neither of the players wanted to pause if this was the case.

couldve been only the obs lagging, not the players

I had sporadic stuttering, like every 3 minutes or so. Not really unwatchable but minorly annoying. The stutter would only last for like 2 seconds tops though.
I can live with 2 sec. stuttering every 3 minutes.

I think that a lot of people are overexaggerating, and will say all hell got loose when they get a stutter every 3 min, they're spoiled and too easily annoyed/frustrated . I could be wrong on that though - It's my guess, not a fact.
But history has learned me that blowing complaints out of orbit is nothing new, it even happens at my job. Customers will complain, saying X or Y had huuuuge consequences, while it was a minor inconvenience. Stab through the bubble and you'll find yourself in a whole different more accurate world.

Once the LoL stream was over, the lag disappeared completely and I could watch 720p+ completely lagless!

Happening for me in Canada too. Everything else on the net is working as usual. Cleared cache, played around with Adblock, used different browsers (even ~shudders~ IE). Nada.
