Project Ended 4/20/2013

Thank you everyone who participated in this event. (Z)DongRaeGu is feeling a lot better now after reading all your heart-felt cheers. He tweeted this a few days after the project began and has continued reading your messages throughout the following week(s).

박수호
‏@MVPDongRaeGu

thx!! Im always fine even if i lost cuz u guys Just waiting for next league, and practicing hard!

So he's back to his old happy self, full of energy and determination to tackle the challenges ahead (GSTL/TeamStory/Code A/OSL). A few days ago, DRG was even spotted streaming some matches for fans and had this hilarious run-in with RootDrewbie in the chatroom:

[00:41] <ROOTdrewbie> DRG u zot bob ssibal
[00:41] <@DRG> kkkkkk
[00:41] <@DRG> wtf drewbie
[00:41] <@DRG> get out
[00:41] <@DRG> chobo
[00:41] <+DRGisAwesome> lol
[00:41] <ROOTdrewbie> LOL
[00:41] <@neoghaleon55_> lmao
[00:41] <TFS> LOL

So whether it's apparent or not, I want to let you know that your support has made a significant impact on his mentality and outlook. Cheers matter. Fan support matters. Remember that we are eSports and fans are a critical cornerstone to how it all works.

On a personal note,
When I started this thread over a week ago, I had doubts that it would gain much support. I almost regretted posting it immediately because I was afraid of looking foolish. But you guys came in and out poured so much genuine love for this player when he was down. The experience has taught me not to let fear stop me from doing what I'm passionate about: supporting esports and my favorite players. So thank you. <3

The best cheers in this thread has been picked.
The decision was made by us peeps who run DRG's fan club.

Our runner up is Lumi, who will receive a GSL mouse pad.
Lumi was the last person to submit a cheer before the project ended, and it was one of the best ones. This cheer is just oozzzzzing with fandom! I love it!

Finally....
I want to congratulate Promethelax for having the best cheer!

I have known Promethelax to be a long time, dedicated fan. Last year during our art-book project, he contributed two artworks for DRG. His cheer this year is unique in that it was very personal. After reading it, I definitely left with insight as to why he felt such a strong connection to this player, the sort that makes people very loyal, passionate fans. For his efforts and courageous post, Promethelax will receive an MVP Goliathus Mouse Pad purchased from Teamliquid.net sent to his house.

Here's his winning post:

On April 12 2013 12:04 Promethelax wrote:
Why am I a fan of DRG you ask? Well, I’d be happy to tell you. I am a fan of DRG because he is simply the best thing to happen to me as a starcraft fan. Let me explain.

I was a peripheral fan of professional bw, I watched a few games and enjoyed them. I played a bit of bw but was never that good; I was too young to really fall in love with the depth of the game. But when I was eighteen SCII came out. I had just dropped out of high school, I had some spare time. I needed a hobby to keep me out of trouble. Along came wings of liberty, reminding me how much I loved competitive gaming. I played a little, and I watched pro games. I saw TLO play the beta and his play inspired me. I played a bit but when I went to college I didn’t get internet in my dorm. I stopped playing, stopped watching. Starcraft was replaced by drinking. I didn’t play the game I loved more than once or twice that year.
The next year, my girlfriend and I moved out of the dorms, we got a place, basically a broom closet that barely fit out bed and my computer desk. I played again. The game was new to me again. I loved every minute of it. And I started watching professional games again. Staying up until 6 in the morning for the games to start. In early 2012 I promised myself I’d watch every game of the GSL. I didn’t manage every game but I did get to watch many of them, my grades suffered but I didn’t care. I had a new love. I watched a man, a boy my age, playing starcraft like I had never seen it played. I watched DRG crush player after player with styles I could hardly believe. In the RO4 he played against GuMiHo in one of the best series I had ever witnessed.

On March third I stayed up all night, I watched the finals. I remember the MVP coach was online in the gomtv chat, I told him this was the first gsl final I had ever watched. That I was watching it for DRG and he thanked me. Replying to me in the swirls of text that flashed through those old gom chats, he thanked me personally for being there to cheer for DRG. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

I watched DRG win that gsl. I watched him become the best player in the world. I am a DRG fan. I will always be a DRG fan. He brought me back my passion for Starcraft. My love of the game and he reminded me that SCII is an art form, akin to a dance that is beautiful to watch. Every time I see DRG play I cheer for him (even against Liquid, my favourite team) last time Neo ran a DRG cheerful contest I drew DRG a swarmhost, to remind him of greater things to come. I stayed up the other night to cheer for him against YoDa and against Flying. I watched him until the final GG, sure that he could win and bring himself another championship. I was sure that DRG would reach those greater things I had promised him with that swarmhost, and though he didn’t achieve them in this gsl I am still confident that DRG can, and will, become a champion again.

DRG is my favourite player, a wonderful persona and an inspiration. As always: DRG fighting!

[Cheer Project] Save Emo DRG, Win MVP Mousepad!!

Project End-Date April 20th, 2013

Ok! Listen up! This is Urgent! (Z)MVPDongRaeGu has officially gone emo. I've spoken to him recently and it's not good. I know what you're all thinking: "not another one of these projects, neoghaleon55!" But hear me out! It's important!

Who is DongRaeGu?

MVPDongRaeGu is a high profile, Code S level player in StarCraft II. He is one of the most successful pro-gamer in SCII: Wings of Liberty, placing 4th in overall winnings. DongRaeGu also has a reputation of being very generous to his fans and teammates. His ample fan interactions have earned him a special place in the SCII community's hearts. You can learn more about him from my various DRG Blogs. [1, 2]

Why is this Urgent?

Trust me, I wasn't planning on doing another one of these. Frankly they're a bit lame, but I felt it was necessary just one more time. Why? Because MVPDongRaeGu is on his 9th consecutive Code S Tournament showing. If he makes it into another Code S, he would earn the honor of the Nestea Award (achieved by being in Code S 10 seasons in a row). So far only two players have earned this prestigious title: Nestea (whom the award was named after) and IMMvp.

However, since his really close but ultimately tragic fall out of Code S round of 32, DRG has been quite the same. I'm not copy/pasta-ing the conversation I had with him here for privacy's sakes but it's very concerning. Anyway, I want to cheer him up, and I can't do it alone. This is the worst possible time for him to go into a slump and lose his chance for the Nestea award.

Let's turn that frown...

Upsidedown! A Happy DRG is good for eSports.

Ok, What do you want us to do?

It's simple, just write in this topic why you're still a fan of DRG. If you're terribly unpoetic, then draw a picture and upload it.

Remember what Stephano said? "At some point of going into a professional level, you don't feel the fun of playing the game anymore... The fun comes from winning tournaments and having the crowd cheer for you."

I think what's been on DRG's mind and it's been creeping up in many of his interviews, is that he thinks his fans have left him. And now that he's not winning as much, he might be losing a lot of that motivation. But I know that's not true. Every time I go into a LR thread, I see countless people cheering for DRG, people who don't necessarily visit his fan club, but are his fans nonetheless. I guess I want to hear from those people most of all in this thread.

Prizes

Best cheer or cheers will receive an MVP Goliathus Mousepad. The mouspad(s) will be
purchased through the TeamLiquid Store! So TL.net will get a cut, some proceeds will go to Team MVP (Team DRG), and hopefully DRG will get a lot of cheers. Everybody wins! I also have some GSL goodies to give out for runner ups!

Anyway, what are we waiting for, let's cheer up DRG.

This cheer project will close on April 20th.

Thank you TeamLiquid.net for allowing fans like me to support players in a very special and meaningful way. I would have put this in blogs, but for reasons I've explained above (wanting to reach a wider audience, mainly from Live Reports) that I felt it's necessary for this brief project to be in the General category. In return, I'm keeping the project very short (roughly 1 week) and the prizes will be purchased directly for TL.net's store.

I'm a fan of DRG! I play protoss and generally stick to cheering for my toss brethren but great players like DRG are an exception. He has provided us, the spectators, with so many wonderful spectacles as he dismantles his opponents but I think the real reason I root for him is that you can tell he plays for the audience. A true showman. Anyways, I hope he gets the Nestea award. I will try to create something for this thread if I have some time this weekend.

Anyone else kind of tired of these threads? This is at least the third time someone made a thread like this after a big DRG loss. When anyone else loses they just silently move on... It was cute the first time, but now it annoys me.
Life is too short to take it seriously.

DRG is legendary in my eyes for his muta/bling/ling vs MKP. It was right around the time that i was starting to get into the competitive StarCraft II and DRG always gave action packed games. I always hope for a DRG v. MKP rematch whenever possible and I think it may be the perfect time for him to return to the old ling/bling/muta PvT style that was so riveting to watch way back when. He's also got a great and humorous personality in the game and out (like in interviews) which is pretty unique for Koreans. It's not that the other Koreans don't have personalities because they obviously do but DongRaeGu is one of the Koreans that has always done well to show his personality at events which just adds to his awesomeness imo.
As my favorite zerg player I still go out of my way to see him play. Waking up at 5 AM to catch GSL week after week? No big deal, anything for you DongRaeGu! <3

Yes, I love these events/projects, especially when they're for DongRaeGu because I love DongRaeGu so much because DongRaeGu!

I remember waking up this week, wanting to listen to a song. Normally I just get ready straight for school but I booted up my PC. And saw that Code S was on. Ultimate final game, DRG vs Flying, 50 minutes in. DRG looked like he was going to lose, but I just wanted to believe so bad. And I did. I believed and believed. I didn't want to see the DRG we saw a few GSLs ago. I was hoping that even if he was going to lose, he was going to lose after almost coming back. Alas he couldn't pull off the win. But I still believed. DRG, don't you dare be depressed. Don't you dare be emo. Don't you dare.

I closed my eyes, hoping that when I open them, that DRG wouldn't be too sad. He took it to the final game. He took it there. He made it epic. He made it close. He'd have a smile, sad inside, but smiling still. But no, I saw his blank, frowned face. I felt it, his sadness, I felt it. Halfway across the world, I was sad too. I knew I wasn't alone. I knew that his fans too would be sad. The best fanclub and it's members would be sad.

I somewhat felt responsible. I felt that either I shouldn't have watched so he would've won. Or that I should've watched the whole thing so he'd win. Some type of Schrodinger's Cat thing. It's always how I feel whenever I wake up, Liquipedia results, and see scores I don't like. "Maybe if I watched it, the results might have been different..." I feel like such a terrible fan. I never was a true fan of anything or anyone until I met StarCraft and until I met and got to know DRG.

DRG's fans are not leaving him. We are not leaving him. Far from it. I chose to be a DRG fan because I know we are the best fans. We have the best Fanclub thread, we have people who do projects for him, go to events to meet him, etc. etc. We believe in him always, and even when he doesn't believe in himself, we still keep believing. Even though we praise him like a god sometimes, we know he gets hurt so we try and give him a shoulder or two to rest on.

DRG you cannot slump now. Please. I saw you play in the beta and I had a feeling you were going to be amazing. Early 2012 DRG-style, but even better. Don't let these few wins hurt you. I want to see you have that NesTea award. Then I want you to get an award of your own, with your name on it, not just to represent you but your fans and support. We share the pain, and we share the glory.

I'm going to MLG Anaheim again, DRG. You better be there, ready to have a line for pictures with your fans who are number one. And you better have the most upside frown ever. I'm a fan and I believe, now more than ever. Don't let us down. Be the man, the player, the leader we want.

DongRaeGu please. Don't give up hope. You always have hope. You are our hope. We believe!

my short DRG related story:

ive been to one barcraft only/ it was hosted by my school's starcraft club, for the GSL finals between DRG and Genius. i'm now our starcraft club's resident DRG fanboy because i took a shot to celebrate each of DRG's wins, and a condolence shot each game he lost (along with other drinks before the games started). because of DRG, i ended up throwing up on my roommates desk.

so dongraegu, you need to make it to code S! i want to watch you in another code S finals!

I have never met DRG in person, but DRG is probably one of my favorite players BECAUSE he gives back so much to his fans. I remember one night staying up till 3 watching a youtube vod of DRG playing against the up-and-coming players from the Chinese scene. DRG wasn't on a big stage sitting in a booth, taking out Chinese players after Chinese players. No, DRG was literally sitting in a bar with 2 computers set up and playing against players after players. Ya, you can argue that "it was a paid trip why wouldn't he do it", well because he could definitely be sitting back in the MVP house and being praised for winning his first GSL and just relaxing. But instead he goes to a foreign country with a definite language barrier just to meet his fans and provide more exposure for the Chinese scene, and attract the Chinese players.

Apart from DRG's dedication to his fans, his interviews are extremely hilarious (I'm not talking about his broken English, but his personality). To be able to have the heart to learn a new language just to provide fans with a fun and less uniformed interview (if you guys didn't know most Koreans are very polite and their answers are very dull) is something definitely respectable and tout-able. Furthermore, DRG is the only Korean Zerg I absolutely will cheer in any match-ups regardless who he plays, just because his style of play is so unique and different from the usual monotoned play-style from other players.

DRG Signed my zerg messenger bag at IPL5. I obtained a LOT of signatures on that bag during the tournament (like Stephano, Scarlett, CatZ, Sheth, Life, Violet, etc.) but I was most excited about DRG's. I consider it the best sig on there. Not sure if this helps, but I am always cheering for DRG!!!

Drg will always have a special place in my heart.
His smile is one of the things that cheer me up the most, his interview is always interesting to read.

I remember going to a bar craft of him against genius in the gsl final and Drg always had the louder chant and my friend asked me why Drg gets so much support, someone next to us said its because he is like a friend that you just can't help but to like him a lot even if you don't know him very well.

I really hope Drg knows that I will continue to support him no matter what.
He is the only player I don't cheer because he is good but he is my star

DRG,

Your legacy stands. This legacy that you build through being the inspiring player that you are. In countless matches you have shown your vigour, your determination. your domination. With this you showed the world who you are, and we will remember you for that. This is the legacy, your legacy.

Many times have I, and many others, sit on the edge of our seat, watching the art that you created through the game of Starcraft. Rarely have we acknowledged a player the way we have acknoweldged you. With this we will always be cheering for you, always.

If fans were to talk about Starcraft in ten years, we would talk about you. We would still know you for the increadible player that you are. Whit your legacy, you are intrinsic part of the e-sport that is Starcraft2.

But your legacy is not over yet. The powerfull player that is DRG will always be here, part of Starcraft2, and we will always be cheering for you. We will always know, always remember, and always love you, because of the legacy that you build. Show us any game, and we will cheer.
Always look on the bright side of life

I first heard of DongRaeGu in whispers, silent words of ill omen spat in only the darkest corners. "He is coming", they whispered, "the harbinger of foreigner pride". A single image accompanied the words of these doomsayers, a face almost deathly pale whose eyes showed not a thing but grit and zeal. The rumours expanded. Now he had a consistent 600 apm, now he was supernatural.
Then he came. No amount of preparation could have saved us from his arrival. Like a hurricane, he swept through our entire civilization, took what he wanted and left only despair and broken men. Never again was that aspect of trepidation and momentum realized.

There has never been any korean that i felt had this kind of aura, nor any that i cheered for so intensively.
Return to us, dongraegu, destroyer of worlds!

Back then, when DRG wasn't a popular player i saw him playing SC2 over some strange stream i think. It was one of the few moments in SC2 when i could say, this guy is different, his starcraft is different, he has something more to it. The way he was playing was just on the next level. His mutas and lings always impressed me. Lately he is not doing too too well and i feel sad about it T.T I hope our cheers give him power to regain his former skills. DRG fighting!

Ever since you appeared as an undefeatable GSTL Ace, DRG is my GOD. I won't forget your macro games where no matter what the opponents do, you won't die. You were holding off any kind of all-ins, deny all options from the opponent and suffocate them as you freaking crush them. That is when I thought you're a god.

There were times when you lost, we saw you feeling sad. Two days ago when I saw you lose, I didn't actually expect you to be so sad. But when I saw it, it reminded me why you are DRG the god. It is because you are the one Pro who show's the most emotions and tries so hard all the time. That is why I know that even if you're not a god like you were before, I won't stop supporting you.

Even if you feel like you are going down right now, I know you won't go down like this. Did you think we will forget all of the greatest epic games you've delivered to us? Did you think we'll stop cheering for you when you're the one trying so hard all the freaking time?

Then you've sadly mistaken because you have no idea how many people you've made them join the religion DRG just like me. I and all the starcraft2 fans know that when you lose, you are feeling it so much.

You think we nerds don't support a person who is suffering? We are the best nerds in the best game of the universe. More like an angels serving for the GOD. We will support you to eternity so just get CODE S. If not, I might cry again, but just remember that we will still support you for ever. Unleash the zerg god super saiyajin power x 9000 + anger + etc. You're the best DRG. CHEER IT UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GSL Forever the win!

I'm a Terran player, and usually cheer for my Terran brothers, but DRG is different. Very few Koreans have the personality and fun spirit that DRG presents. DRG vs MMA is probably my favorite rivalry in the entire game. Also, I think in terms of raw skill and potential DRG is top 5 in the world. Considering how GOOD he has been and for how LONG he has shown this skill, it's definitely safe to call DRG the best zerg of WoL. I really hope he continues on and shows his amazing skill to everyone in HotS, because DRG is one of the only zergs I cheer for. C'mon DRG! It's Heart of the Swarm time, and there is nobody swarmier than you! DRG FIGHTING!!
