It's official guys, we've found someone that has more shallow analysis than me.

Call it a tie.

There is just a lot more action all around.

Reapers are much better and produce some action early game.
Oracles are good and provide some more harassment options which are fun to watch.
Mothership core or whatever it is called allows for some more harassment options for protoss early on
Vipers allow zerg to have interesting ways to try and break a Terran mech so those games aren't as often just boring turtles
Widow mines can allow for some cute micro trying to pull mines into the terrans own army
Medivac buff seems to be leading to more multipronged drops which once again, are fun to watch.
Between infestor nerf/viper introduction/hydra and ultra buff zerg games aren't just 100% turtle until maxed on brood infestor
Protoss air buffs gives them more options so that games aren't all the same for them either...

IMO almost every change they've made makes the game more fun to watch.

Yeah but people like my won't return because units are somewhat different.

The thing the game lacks is consistency. I didn't follow the game for half a year and after returning it feels like 50% of players that matter are new/nonames I couldn't really care about.

The other 50% are 40% faceless koreans and the 10% foreigners/koreans with a character can't make up for the boredom that is 90% of the players.

I'm really sad that the game of my dreams, which it was after release of WoL, didn't manage to keep that aura of epicness
I always felt ;(

Back then, when I used to watch all of Husky's / Day9's / Psy's casts, every player had a distinct style of play everyone knew about. You could literally see their progress week after week. Fun times.

The consistency you are thinking of just isn't possible with a dynamic game like Starcraft that will be constantly evolving and changing because of metagame shifts, patches, and expansions for the next half-decade or so at least.

By metagame shifts you mean patches, right? Because after the first year of SC2 the gameplay only changed if the game was patched...

You can only play the metagame that David Kim wants you to play. Too bad he doesn't know jack shit about RTS.

Back on topic, according to this editorial:

news.inews24.com/php/news_view.php?g_serial=732222&g_menu=020521&rrf=nv,

SC2:HoTS after enjoying a brief time in the limelight, is rapidly sliding down the most popular games chart, after achieving 9th place soon after release, it's slid down to 13th only a few days later.

Oh and it's not just Korea, XFIRE STATS:

Umm you learned statistics in elemantry school? Thats some heavy shit yo'!

You just registered (on tlnet) to bash on SC2:HotS. I respect the core of your opinion but you shouldn't wonder people won't reply in a serious way to you.
Maybe go back to school and learn how to properly forumlate an argument to present a - maybe - valid point.
Kthxbai.

Of course trends are downward. People played trough the campaign, They ranked in ladder and went 50%-50%.
Now they go back to what they did before. LoL, DotA, Smite, PoE whatever...

Same goes for me, ranked with every race on different server and now I just occasionally hop on if I really feel like playing.

edit: to set it in relation, the first week of HotS there were about ~150% more people online in my friendslist than before.
From those +150% some are still playing. We are not expierencing a loss in players. Just a normal huge increase and then a decline to where it will normalize. Even as the Xfire graph suggests(was there something about learning stats and stuff? =)).

I guess you just have the burning desire to be banned from TL, because that's pretty much where I see your throwaway account going, looking at your post history. If you don't like Starcraft 2, then why the fuck do you make an account and bitch about it endlessly?

Just based on what I've observed here I'd say HotS has been definitely better-received than WoL. These are a couple pictures I took at the launch party here in Seoul. I've seen more people playing it in PC Bangs recently and although it is true that PC Bang stats might not be the best litmus test for gauging popularity, it's still something to pay attention to. The real test is going to be seeing how many fans show up to events once the GSL, etc start rolling again. I personally think the scene is in for some good times with HotS.

Ultimately though I doubt that SC2 is ever going to be as popular as BW was here in Korea. The initial SC2 launch was rough due to various reasons and in that chaos other games stepped in and filled the gaps that were missing in terms of esports popularity. I'm not just talking LoL either. Other games like Sudden Attack, etc have their fan bases too.

I do think though that people care too much about SC2's popularity in Korea. Think about how MLG did this last weekend in viewer numbers. We've had huge turnouts for EU events recently too. At the end of the day we need to realize that Korea's a pretty small part of the SC2 fan base overall and we don't necessarily need the game to be wildly popular here to have it be successful elsewhere. So don't worry about it too much.

TLDR: SC2 isn't as huge in Korea as we'd like yet, but it actually doesn't matter as much as people think it does in the grand scheme of things.

I find it interesting that DoA sees it this way. Yes Korea is small in terms of numbers but they have unprecedented culture and infrastructure, big reason why they have such a successful pro scenes and English casters find jobs there.

In BW the big corporations came in and sponsored the pro teams, this was unprecedented for eSports in anywhere else in the world and BW at its peak was undoubtedly a professional sport. Unfortunately SC2 never lived up to that due to the reasons already discussed but with the infrastructure and culture in place Korean pros still came out far far ahead of their foreign counterparts. This is something that is quite important and is also why a lot of people wish it'd be big in Korea because they will provide the top level pro scene, just like how everybody watches the NBA for basketball and UEFA Champions League + various European top leagues for football, people will watch Korean SC2.

Ultimately the foreign scene has failed to show they can usurp Korean dominance regardless of spectator/player numbers. We are also yet to see the same level of sponsorship though events-wise we're seeing big events like MLG, Dreamhack, IEM etc doing loads of catch up, they're kinda different as they're not ongoing year long tournaments but rather short, one-few day tournaments where Koreans can fly over and snatch all the top spots. In conclusion I'm saying the foreign scene need high level pro tournaments and high level pro players who can match up.

I still see Korea as vital for SC2 for the reasons above and think that Blizz shouldd really focus their efforts there. I'm not too sure if the SC2 community in general focus on the Korean scene as much as I do though, so I may be completely wrong but we will see how the foreign scene develops compared to the Korean scene.

I played sc2 pretty hardcore and was high, mid, low masters throughout the first 5 seasons or so. Played all the races. But I stopped playing because the game balance and gameplay was not enjoyable. Boring repetitive and frustrating. Whilst it was fun to cane noobs on multiplayer single player ladder was a dull grind. Not much variety in strategy for a "RTS" game imho.

On the other hand i have played dota for around 10 years and it is still a really fun game. I dont play computer games much anymore but I can enjoy the occasional dota session at pc.

If i was still playing pc games id be playing LOL or Dota2. Heres why: More interactive and team orientated, more open to casual players so i can play with friends, more variety in strategy, and more balanced than sc2 considering the immense variety of strats. Basically way more fun team games.

Anyway noticed that HOTS came out so came on here to see if there was any buzz. Was considering watching a season of gsl to check out the new units. But the overall poor game play, lack of variety and balance really kinda sc2 for me.

Just wondering why do you guys prefer sc2 over LOL or dota?

Because MOBAs are the most boring genre I have encountered in the history of competitive gaming. That's obviously just my own personal opinion, but I would play every single FPS, Fighting game, RTS or MMO before I'd play LoL or Dota.

IMO moba's aren't that boring to play but I don't find anything interesting in, ex. watching lol pro match...

The main problem with SC2 in Korea is that is just did not capture the super young market that BW did (fuck, I played it against my elementary school students a lot, never got to play them in SC2.

Home Pc's are fucking terrible in general, so they play these low spec games because they can play at home and the PC room. Also, those PC room stats don't really take in people who play at home and stuff....I mean the amount is probably low but it's still there.

SC2 is pretty popular in Seoul, maybe Daegu and MAYBE Busan, but everywhere else in Korea it's impossible to find anyone who has played the game.

As for why I don't play LoL, I get excactly 0 satisfaction from a win. I play a game, I win and I sit there like 'well fuck, that was alright'. However when I play SC2 a win gives me a massive buzz, and a loss gives me a bit of a buzz too. Dota 2 is enjoyable, but LoL is like playing minesweeper on a 10x10 with 1 mine

Is that mainly a problem with the way SC2 is distributed now, i.e. linked to personal bnet account/no LAN? Or is it more a function of needing a moderately powerful PC (though let's be honest, SC2 ain't exactly Crysis 3) ?
