SC2 is pretty popular in Seoul, maybe Daegu and MAYBE Busan, but everywhere else in Korea it's impossible to find anyone who has played the game.

As for why I don't play LoL, I get excactly 0 satisfaction from a win. I play a game, I win and I sit there like 'well fuck, that was alright'. However when I play SC2 a win gives me a massive buzz, and a loss gives me a bit of a buzz too. Dota 2 is enjoyable, but LoL is like playing minesweeper on a 10x10 with 1 mine

Ya Sc2 didnt catch the 14 year old girls this time.

Is that mainly a problem with the way SC2 is distributed now, i.e. linked to personal bnet account/no LAN? Or is it more a function of needing a moderately powerful PC (though let's be honest, SC2 ain't exactly Crysis 3) ?

Pretty entitled statement.
Starcraft II needs that much ressources that I can't play it on my gf's rig. It was a rig for 400$ about 2-3 yrs back.
I could play it when SC2 was released but as it is now I get fps drops etcetc.
Considering that exluciding EU and NA the PC standards are pretttty low its totaly understandable they can't run SC2 in an enjoyable way.
LoL vs SC2 requirements(I am failry sure those SC2 req are not meant for 2v2s or + ):

esports in general has been in steady decline in korea for some time now (since 2008 imo), with savior being the nail in the coffin. but i'm really interested to see what the next round in proleague will bring, as they're the biggest distributor of esports content in korea

Koreans enjoy BW more than SC2. Even big Korean companies are still following/sponsoring BW:

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=404127

SC2's popularity runs off of BW's fame. If SC2 was the first in the series and released when SC/BW was released (with corresponding graphics at that time, etc), it would definitely not have done nearly as well in Korea.

Insulated SC2 diehards don't seem to fully grasp just how underwhelming the HOTS changes are. To the people who dismissed WOL long ago, these very minor changes are not going to bring them back into the fold. It's still the same game with the same problems that lead to their losing interest in the first place.

Speak for yourself. I HATE WoL but HotS made SC2 a lot more interesting, and I'm starting prefer HotS TvT & TvZ over BW TvT & TvZ. Blizzard just needs to fix SC2 protoss' boring gameplay, and maybe add some kind of scourges for ZvZ muta-bling.

I love how many people seem to be absolutely sure that unless a game is the most popular, it's dead.

I like how this thread titled "Korean Denizens reactions to HOTS/MLG Winter?" is full of non-Koreans talking about how much Koreans don't like SC2 instead of what the Koreans who did watch MLG thought of HOTS...

Could be even before that.
In 2005, Ongamenet boasted a 3.1 percent viewership rating, ranking 9th among all cable channels. However [in 2008], its ranking dropped to 16th place, and the viewership also fell to 1.9 percent, according to research firm Nielson.

Source: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/tech/2008/05/133_24407.html

If the decline was smooth from 2005 to 2008, that would be 15% of the previous year's viewers lost every year.

The popularity of a game has no bearing on how good the game is! Greatest MMO I ever played (Dark Age of Camelot) never had more than like 100k subs.

That being said, this should only surprise the people who bought into all the bullshit that HOTS was somehow going to make SC2 bigger than ever. This was talked up with such hilarious frequency on the various talk shows and by pros and others who are financially invested in making this a reality that I suppose it is understandable.

This is more likely what we are observing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_cat_bounce
Fortune favors the prepared mind.

I blame the lack of Mutalisk and Wraith dancing/micro (and Scout too if you researched the speed upgrade).

In terms of fun stuff you can do to your opponent in SC2 (that they removed) - They removed Vortex, making me lose interest in playing Protoss (no more Archon toilets anymore? MADNESS!!).

Now I have to get my fix by going Terran and nuking (or going Zerg and NPing their Medivacs which is neat because Losira did it when I thought about it).

The great thing about HotS is that the music is really good (lots of variety).

Besides that, the lack of Vortex kind of sucks honestly (Vortex isn't even that big of a deal in HotS now that ZvP, where Vortex was cited as a problem because it's a game decider due to BL Infestor in WoL, doesn't even rely on it anymore).

I can understand making Mutalisk kind of useless in some cases though (in which case, they could add a 3 second pre cast channeling time on Vortex, and an indicator like "Nuclear Launch Detected" to make it more predictable).

(Seriously though, I do miss archon toilets. Ever since that San vs Nestea game and also ever since the Mothership rush strategy in the TL forums, I have been a fan of archon toilets >.>.)

I never thought I would find someone who was unhappy about this :p.

CJ herO totally agreed with me (in an interview, he too was disappointed in lack of Archon toilets).

I think it's just the coolness factor. Originally with the Mothership, I was disappointed (after playing SC2 for the first time) it was just an Arbiter that moves slower.

Then... San vs Nestea... ARCHON TOILET!

I have always been hyped whenever I warped in the Mothership (and it made a cool sound effect too).

Vortex also has a cool sound effect.
