Previous Stephano in Korea Interviews:
Stephano in Korea
Stephano in Korea (again)

Source: This Is Game

IMPORTANT NOTE: This interview was conducted before Stephano's Code S match.

You are now nearing almost a month since arriving in Korea. How is the team house life?

I really like that I get to live the team house lifestyle with such great teammates. I am having such a great time because the coaching staff take such good care of me.

What kind of friendships have you developed while living the team house lifestyle?

ThorZaIN and JD are the most fun. ThorZaIN is the most fluent in English within the team and he's a very nice and fun friend. JD is just really funny (laughs).

You have GSL ahead of you. How are the preparations coming along?

Rather than focus on the physical aspect of the game, I focused on image training. The amount of strategies that my opponents can do are limited so I thought a lot about counterattacks that I could do.

You have INnoVation, Hack, and DRG in your group. What kind of scenario are you predicting?

I think I'm going to beat INnoVation by a score of 2-0. And I think I'm going to face DRG in the winners' round since he'll probably defeat Hack. I'm not confident in my ZvZs so it's going to be difficult for me to win in the winners' round. I think I'll probably advance by beating a Terran again in the final round.

There are some new maps this season. Icarus, Akilon Flats, and Neo Planet S were added. How do you feel about these maps?

I think Neo Planet S is okay but I don't really know about the other maps. The paths you can take in Neo Planet S are really clear but the other maps have way too many pathways so I think it's going to be hard to play on those.

Currently, Proleague has been going on. How do you feel about the Proleague format now that you've experienced it?

I have some issues with the entry format. You know who's getting sent out so you can predict on some level, who's going to win. And that takes the fun out of the game. I also don't like how the maps are set. Almost every single tournament uses the format where the losers choose the next map but Proleague is not like that so I don't like it. But I think the strictness of Proleague reflects the history of the game well so I like it. I hope KeSPA will realize what the trend is nowadays and try to follow it in the future.

Compared to how much you stream, you must not practice as much. And yet, why do you continue to make good results?

That's just my style. I don't really play a lot on a regular basis. But, I think about the game constantly on a daily basis. In my opinion, that's enough.

Doesn't streaming get in the way of your practicing and planning strategies?

I stream for the fans. I don't use my strategies on stream so it's not a big deal.

Why are you picky about your gaming gear?

I don't really care about what kind of mouse pad, headset, or other gaming gear I use but I am picky about my mouse.

It seems like you don't really use hotkeys all that much but why is this so?

I think up to hotkey #5 is my limit. 1 is my army, 2 is my infestors and spell casters, 3 is my queens, 4 is my hatcheries and 5 is my diversion/defensive army.

You gained a lot of fame and recognition when you showed off your 12 minute 200/200 roach strategy during your first ever big game. A lot of fans are wondering as to whether or not you've developed a new strategy for Code S.

Yes I have. I will show them during the GSL. I hope the fans will watch closely.

Almost every tournament out there will be switching to HotS soon. How do you feel about HotS personally?

Personally, I hate it. What I hate the most is that the players who couldn't make it in WoL get to have a head start for HotS. I don't like the fact that they can start making good results just because they got a head start. I also don't like the speed upgrade for medivacs and I also don't like that you can burrow without needing to go to lair. Labeling idle workers, the outline you see when trying to build buildings, and the fact that workers automatically go to mine as soon as the game starts are also things I disapprove of.

It was revealed that you have no intention of pursuing your pro gaming career for a long time. The reason is known as because you've been accepted to a medical school but most of the rumors out there aren't entirely accurate. Could you please tell us what your current situation is like and what your future plans are?

It's not true that I've been accepted to a medical school. I wanted to transfer to one but I have yet to even start. My family is against me gaming. So I promised my family that I would only do it for two years. I made that promise because I felt that I would want to continue for three years after doing it for two and four years after doing it for three. I don't think I'm going to remain forever in the eSports world. If I do give up my pro gaming career then I would like to study economics. But for now, I'm still a pro gamer so I'm going to keep doing the best that I can possibly do.

What kind of goal do you want to achieve during your career as a pro gamer?

I want to find the answer to life. I feel like I've gotten closer to that answer than before I became a pro gamer.

Anything else you would like to say to your Korean fans?

I like everything about Korea. I think Seoul is prettier than Paris and the people are so awesome and pretty. The sights are amazing and so is the food. I want to thank my Korean fans that are cheering me on. Lastly, I want to request that a lot of people cheer me on for the GSL.

I guess they are referring to in Korea specifically which would mean the 2011 GSL Blizzard Cup game on Daybreak vs Liquid HerO

As we all know, Code S didnt suit Stephano style, but still I think he will adapt and come back and crush everyone in HotS.

It's funny how, at the same time, the scene care so much about Stephano and yet he doesn'"t really care at all.
His retirement announcement is gonna be the biggest drama yet when it comes.

i think that's silly. so stephano can only win when the conditions and rulesets are exactly the way he wants them to be?

I doubt we will see him come back and crush Code S, I don't think he will play it again. But I agree with you we will still see him win a majority of the foreigner events probably and place best or top 3 of all the foreigners, like he did in WoL.

You know players have preferences, some prefer live tournaments, other are pretty good in team leagues, while some other are better when it comes to preparation.

Thanks for the translation even if I feel some answers really look korean :p

read: EG.Idra, lol.
Same happend during the transition from BW to WoL. Idra was in a Korean progaming house and didn't deliver, so he was the first one to switch to SCii during beta. That allowed him to get his somewhat decent results in the beginning. But after the rest of the pack adapted, it was clear that he cannot compete.
He is trying the same again now, but the effect will be much less. Maybe he can win some 3rd-class foreign tournament in hillbilly-town.

The red hair doesn't really suit him in my opinion. He looks a lot zergier though...

The fans definitely followed his request to cheer for him during GSL. They went wild.

Oh the five hotkey thing.
Yeah i have the same,i can't really use more without my fingers being retarded.
To fix that i use ² and my 3 mouse buttons (g500) in order to go up to 8 grp.

I've been wondering about that tho,is using a mouse with extra button as control group forbidden in tournaments ?

iirc you can select groups on mouse inside the game hotkey menue. if that's the case it would not be forbidden, as you don't have to use extra programs or mouse drivers to do so.

he never used razer death adder. He always used razer copperhead. Though i dont know how he gets replacements when they go bad cause i dont see them being sold anymore.

I guess he has to hide his mouse because of Steel Series? but EG isnt sponsored by steel series no more , so i not sure whats up. Maybe he is not using the copperhead nor a steel series mouse now?.. Probably some different brand.

Anyway nice interview. It sucks stephano lost, i really really really really really wanted to see him destroy code S. Hopefully he plays CODE A and qualifies right back into CODE S next season. Thats if he decides to play another season in korea

I think he didn't looked down on Bogus he is just confident with his ZvT. And that's for a reason... if they didn't all-in / cheese their odds to win were pretty bad.

Does he realise proleague is a team league, and that's half the point? In most team sports you have some idea of who is coming up and when.

I hope Kespa realises that part of what makes proleague special is that it's like it is.
We don't need every competition being the same, and they already have winers league for some rounds which has a slightly different format.

Stephano needs to realise not everything needs to be "his" way. And that proleague is a team league, and the coaches are supposed to have some impact, not just the players.
HOLY CHECK!

French people are very pessimistic.
What Stephano said about Paris vs Seoul is extremely biased. I'm sure non-French people would have a different opinion.

Personally, I hate it. What I hate the most is that the players who couldn't make it in WoL get to have a head start for HotS. I don't like the fact that they can start making good results just because they got a head start.

this is so funny.

as a german who never was in Paris (but in many other french cities) nor Seoul I would much more likely visit Seoul. Also I have to admit that france is pretty dirty compared to germany in average :p

He promised to only pay for 2 years... that's terrible, he's got to be pretty close already. If he loves doing it and is good at it, hopefully he'll be able to play for longer though.

Can't wait to see what he comes up with for HotS, even if he isn't looking forward to it. The reason Stephano's one of my favorite players (aside from his personality) is because of his amazing ability to come up with builds that no one thought would be possible, and executing them so well.

Well, I did hear about my friend going to Paris and she said it was pretty dirty.

Also, it's not that Stephano's pessimistic, it's probably just that he likes new and different things.

You're really being racist here, it's just racism that is easily waved away with a hand, just because all Caucasians are the %$@!ing same to each other, right?
The excuse people will use is that "No, it doesn't matter if you're different shades of white, one much more pale than the other, you're still both Caucasian, so it isn't racism", but then you're still picking on someone for having different skin colour to you, so it's still inappropriate BS. Cut it out and grow up. People are different and you need to learn to live with it.

I can confirm alongside MetalPanda that I almost only hear very poor things about Paris and yes, especially about it being dirty and chaotic, maybe also ruder people than typically found elsewhere in France, but I think that's a general thing people say about a lot of the biggest cities in different countries, such as Tokyo in Japan (from what I've heard and read).
Not too long ago I remember watching a video about how Japanese people actually have something like a rehabilitation clinic or organisation for Japanese people recovering from the shock of Paris being such a disappointment compared to the romantic ideas they had about it before going there.
I'd link the video only I don't remember where I saw it. We'll see if I can.

I personally don't think just thinking about the game is enough to compete at the highest level, especially when you compare that to Koreans who think about the game all day and practice 12+ hours

I get sick of all the racism calls here and there, but there are other issues that get neglected.
Whites get BS from whites because of different skin colour, actual sheer hate from complete strangers based on skin colour but unlike other racist issues, there's nothing you can really do about it.
So instead of being dumb and assuming, think first for a change and consider that I might not necessarily be one of those sorts you assumed I was.

French medical school system is different than other systems.
In France, the medical faculty accepts pretty much everyone in 1st year, but students are heavily tested during it and can retry it only once. More precisely, there's a numerus clausus for each Faculty which approximately equals to a ~10-15% success rate.
It's a scary ratio when you know that most of the people trying medical school are good and work-hard students.

And that proleague is a team league, and the coaches are supposed to have some impact, not just the players.

gee dude, you need to realise he was asked a question and answerd it. he didnt say "meh meh meh i want to have it this way!!" he just stated what he liked and/ or disliked...

So much diss and truth.

It's funny because there were so many things people disapproved of prior. As for practice training time that's just simple logic and low and behold we saw the same thing with the transition from SC:BW to SC2 and before that WCIII RoC to WCIII FT, etc.

It's good that people who don't practise get punished. I hope this works out as a bell for Stephano, but I highly doubt it. He doesn't seem interested in putting more time into playing.

Luckily stephano can turn off auto-mine in the options settings, so he shouldn't be that hateful towards it.

I think he means when you select a gas to build, it shows a vague outline of the gas on the geyser

the outlines are also different, green for terran, blue for protoss, purple for zerg

And you are going all the way on the other extreme.

The original post was an observation on Stephano's skin tone and lack of tanning, that's it. There was no intention of attacking the person's integrity or value based on the skin color. Thus, not racist.

Skin tone is a fact of life. Racism comes only after you give it too much importance.

Did you fall out the wrong side of the bed or something?
The white thing was obviously not intended torwards racism and more general "go get some sun since you are in a great place for it Stephano".

That's a veeerrry lenient way of seeing his pretty aggressive wording. It sounds more like you're making an excuse on his behalf.

This, it's all about balance.

I'm not "losing my shit" at all and you're adding absolutely nothing to the discussion. Both you (Assirra) and Anta wrote pretty lame lines directly attacking my comments as if I'm being unreasonable, yet offer nothing but those simple troll-level one-two liners.

I'm not going to any extreme and his post was a lot more rude than "just helpful advice that it might be beneficial for him to get tanned" or something like that. You're conveniently ignoring tone and VManOfMana, you cannot be certain there was no intention of attacking, look at his tone. I'm pretty sure he was not intending to be nice and helpful and you claim to know (i.e. you assume) that he was not meaning any harm.
He might not be genuinely "racist" in general, but those sorts of comments are just judgemental.
It's not always simple "helpful advice about health" and if it is, as far as I know, it's a bit naïve, because different skin types have different benefits anyway.
Lighter skin absorbs more nutrients (or w/e; vitamin D, anyway), so claiming it is for "their benefit", "to be helpful" or anything like that is just an excuse to pass physical judgement. If it is supposed to be to help people, they're not doing a very good job and I don't know if any of you have actually learned this in your lives yet, but when people are supposedly receiving help or advice, they don't expect very rude wording.
You know all those bad customer service stories you hear about from time to time? You know how you don't like people giving advice to not seem to have a clue what they are talking about? Said hypothetical more tanned person making the criticism/"helpful comment" failed on both fronts.
Do you think the person listening is grateful? No, the loud-mouth rude person who doesn't think first should have shut his trap.

It's the same kind of thing as ginger-haired people and things like that. Maybe we don't normally consider them racist, but people can have to put through a seriously ridiculous amount of crap from morons making little passing comments (or a lot more) because they know they can get away with it and because making stupid comments is a pastime of those sorts of people.
All I'm doing is making a point as a stand against one stupid, pretty rude sounding comment, for a change (I don't think I approach the topic often) and multiple people who are that determined to be trollish or not read properly are raising an issue with it.
I don't think anyone reasonable will make a point of strongly disagreeing with me, because even if they feel the first comment was meant in a harmless fashion, I'm defending a point, not going batshit crazy as simple 1-2 liner trolls* would like to claim. People who disagree and are reasonable don't use Assirra's wording, they mostly (should ) just go
"Pfft, I think he's wrong but I suppose he's going to stick with making his point about judgemental (or even xenophobic sorts of hateful) behaviour and people getting away with it if its not a more common form (like what is considered racism)."

not you VManOfMana, but I'm not taking an extreme!

It wasn't meant to be a topic-derailer and it was more about very judgemental crap people get away with, whether you want to class it as racism or not.
Racism comes only after you give it too much importance.
Note how other people treat it like suddenly it is so much more of a big deal when someone says "racism", when it could be very judgemental regardless of whether it relates to race or not.
I'm not the one being so stirred up by the word! *Sigh*

On topic, I do feel it's a shame that Stephano doesn't like the Proleague format, partly because I highly doubt KeSPA will change it. I personally much prefer the format too as I don't like people always choosing the same maps that favour their race against the other or favour particular playstyles. I think it might get stale more quickly the GSTL way.

Well yeah, but that doesn't inherently determine colour and I don't think people attacking skin colour (just talking objectively here) care where the person's from so much as the fact that the skin colour isn't to their liking.
People attacking race are usually judging somewhat based on looks anyway, but it's probably more xenophobia about the area or culture.

Labeling idle workers, the outline you see when trying to build buildings, and the fact that workers automatically go to mine as soon as the game starts are also things I disapprove of.

read: EG.Idra, lol.

You do know yourself how hard it was to get on the A-team while kespa was all BW right? Idra was just fine. Thread about Stephano, attack Idra? I don't get it really. ._.

heh interesting that stephano hates hots and kinda silly he hates how players who couldn't make it in wol are getting a head start in hots. In WoL and hots the way zerg can play is very different. For some players turtling to deathball and that's it is just awful (me being one of them, once this became the norm became hard to be consistent as it's just not my style to get a slow moving deathball).

Good interview though but I did not expect him to get out of the round of 32 although he did get really close ^^.

The reason why non-racist judgmental behavior is more easily excused is because it lacks the same kind negative normative connotation. You are upset because someone is being judgmental; the person in question, however, is only implying that Stephano would be more attractive if he were to tan. This is an extremely non-controversial statement. Even when bringing race to the discussion (e.g. "I don't find asian girls attractive" or "I'm not into white guys") doesn't really amplify the discussion because it's essentially an opinion. Additionally, I don't think there are the same kind of historic discriminatory trappings around people being paler--which again fuels the problem of racism. Finally, until proven otherwise, I doubt there is meaningful systemic discrimination against non-tan people. That is another reason why racism is so touchy. In the end, I'm really sad I wrote this post at all.

Labeling idle workers, the outline you see when trying to build buildings

can anyone explain this to me please?

I think he's talking about Zerg structures (and this only matters on high graphic settings, when the model detail setting is set to high instead of low).

In WoL, when you build, the Zerg structure would be transparent until you actually clicked on where you want to build.

For Protoss and Terran (on high graphic settings), it's blue and green respectively (if model setting is set to low, it's just transparent instead of being color coded).

It does make it a bit easier to see but it's mostly a graphical enhancement rather than an actual gameplay enhancement.

Other than that, maybe he means building grid (which is off by default in WoL, not sure if it's on by default in HotS)?

Idle workers were labeled in WoL (they just moved it to a new position in HotS).

truth is, if the tournament isnt about preparing for your opponent (MLG, WCS...) stephano seems to have pretty solid builds against all players, but when it comes down to players that specificly trained to play a match against stephano (leagues like GSL) than stephano seems to struggle... maybe he should do more of his homework, seems like he just underrated that innovation guy...
