http://fnatic.com/news/10226/fnatic-says-farewell-rain-retires.html

Fnatic.Rain: Hi guys this is Fnatic Rain and I'm really sad to announce my retirement. I was considering about retirement about 3months ago but now I think it's a proper time to retire because I feel I can't make good game and result anymore. I'm really thankful to Fnatic for such a good opportunity and provide me a good environment. I had really good experience abroad and made many friends, competing in lot of tournaments. If I didn't work with Fnatic, I think I wouldn't have been able to have such good opportunities.

Not unexpected he hasn't been getting results for a long time. I hope Fnatic sign some of the former SlayerS players like Dark to boost their GSTL team.

I felt like he was playing really well in team leagues actually. Wasn't a huge fan of him, but boy that game at MLG vs boxer was awesome. Wonder what he is going to do next?

He hasn't done much in a long time so this was the right choice for him.

It's also great for SC2 fans because now when people say "Rain", there is no question about which one it is.

Well I guess it's no suprise. The pro scene got to big due to the addition of the Kespa pros so I guess some of the lower tier pros just have to leave...

Aw that's too bad. It seemed like his play was starting to pick up again and he played a respectable TvT against ByuN. It was only a matter of time, though. Good luck in your future, Rain!

I remember when he was so dominant it wasn't funny. It was sad to see him fall a bit like a lot of the older terrans, but he was very awesome and it's about time for him to go to college I think too. GL in life Rain .

awww, i always liked rain a lot. Cheesy players get a lot of hate for some reason, but I love for there to be a few of them on the scene. Rain kept players honest; you didn't see anybody go 3 hatch before pool against rain.

I think this is for the better (ie. him not being stuck). Even though he's been showing good results in team leagues lately, he had grown old and didn't show good enough individually.

I remember two series of his:
MLG: Against Boxer - great games.
NASL against SaSe(I think) - he played poorly and was not interested in playing TvP, so he cheesed all games with proxyraxes and bunkerrush. Really poor showing.

Didn't Oz beat him by a few days? Sad to see someone retire but to be fair, he hasn't really done anything notably after getting 2nd in GSL in 2010, which most people know he achieved by using...interesting strats :p Too bad rain, good luck with whatever you might do after this.

It's sad to see him go because his playstyle did help define the good ol' early days of the GSL.

I still miss those days. Jinro, IdrA, Rain...all together in the GSL...

Sadly, but this is what happens after two years. Everyone tries to make it and some people need to hang up the mouse at some point. Every sport individual sport has players that make a big splash and fade away.

Aw this sucks :/ I always liked watching Rain play, especially when he was on TSL. I never really got interested in Fnatic until he went to them.
I wish he could continue playing, but I can understand his reasons.

Perhaps played the best game ever to be seen at MLG

Didn't think he was doing that bad? He was running a very positive win-ratio in the Team Leagues overall but I guess he wanted his old individual league form

It leaves Fnatic in alot of trouble aswell - Only 5 players in their main squad and no coach

Yeah, meant the Korean squad, forgot about Departure though. Between OGS and SlayerS I'm sure every team can find the players they need to fill the holes in their line ups.

The maturity and loyalty he displayed to Fnatic is admirable and while he has decided to continue esports but under a different game, he will always be in our hearts.

I still remember Seo Yong telling me that he is thinking about retiring around 3 months ago, saying how DreamHack is coming up in some time, and if he won't do really well, he will quit the game for good. We'll still keep in touch

Boxer vs Rain at MLG was fucking sick. Also, his games vs NesTea and MC in GSL Open Season 3 were pretty funny. Too bad he couldn't make a comeback GL in future endeavors!

Looks like there is going to be more retirements to come. Turns out ESF made a bad decision boycotting Kespa thinking they would own Kespa players for at least 6 months or a year more; who would've thought that they caught up so fast. Now a ton of ESF are thinking about retirement because they're not able to compete.

Rain was sick good at the times, with TSL having more or less the best players for each race in him, Fruitdealer and Trickster at the end of beta / first open seasons...

I haven't really followed his progress but I remember him doing pretty well in team leagues and such, every time I saw him he would be one of the Ace's of the team and as always it sucks to see a good player go.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I got the point. They have 4 players to get out in a bo9 team league who would be good choices. They also have a few snipers. They also have J whom they insist on playing even though he loses.

Feels like competition is back to level where it was at the time of broodwar! When white dudes just didn't have a chance against average Korean. Now if you aren't on a clock training hard - tomorrow you are just not as good as those who were training hard yesterday. And with all the KeSPA players added to the already big field. Not just everyone can stand the pressure.

Good luck Rain, you won't be forgotten!

Its probably better for him. I think we might see more retirements in the near future. There is too many players and too little money.

I agree, people kept thinking starcraft was going to keep growing and growing but in the past year it has certainly shrunk. It reached decent popularity about a year or so back but since then things have started to slide quite a bit. Not that their isnt money to be made or viewers to be had, there still is obviously. Just look at this weekends MLG as an indicator, playoff sunday the seats where mostly full but there where still some empty seats, and their wasnt people standing up watching all the way to the very back like some of the MLG's in the past. Not to mention this MLG had even more of a draw then most with the kespa players participating.

E-sports is a very fickle industry, because although their are obviously viewers that watch it that dont play the game, the audience is largely dictated by the popularity of the game, and most casual players wont stick around to play the same game for years on end. And those viewers that dont play probably got introduced to it through some friends who do play. SC2 has obviously taken quite a big dip in players over the past year. Even me when i first stopped playing sc2 (i wouldnt play more than a match a month and i havent played a match in over 6 months now) over a year ago, i was still interested in watching the games for a good 6 months after i stopped playing, but as i moved on to other games etc. I started to watch less and less, to the point where I dont tune in anymore for hardly any tournaments except for maybe an MLG here or there and i think its been like that for alot of former players of the game / friends of former players who where viewers.

Lets hope that Hots breathes some new life back into the game, i know ill certainly be playing.

A player who focused more on all-ins than actual skill, not much of a loss here imo.

However a lot of pro's leaving the scene is not good for the future of SC2.

Yeah, that was a memorable one.

He must have received a lot of "you're Rain, the famous sc2 player?"
Responding with "No, not that one" must have been pretty disheartening, considering his history in the scene compared with that of SKTelecom's Rain.

It's about time MC should retire too. He didn't even manage to get into Code S this season and did terribly at the most recent MLG. Like Rain, I think MC will be retiring soon. Which is kinda funny since they were both in the GSL Open Season 3 finals.

I highly doubt MC is going to retire soon. It hasn't been that long since he's had good results (He was just in the semi finals of the OSL and placed third so he is seeded into the next one).

If he didn't get any results for 6+ months then maybe he would consider it, but otherwise I doubt he's even considering retiring right now.

Not to be an ass but good news in the sense that the scene was overpopulated by Rain's.

Mostly remember Rain as one of the forgettable Code S finalists and from the MLG(?) match vs Boxer.

Goodluck in whatever you pursue next Rain.

Are you trolling? You think MC, who has won more prize money than anyone else in the history of Starcraft 2 and took 3rd in the first season of OSL, is comparable to Rain who hasn't done well in like over a year?

LOL, i feel like i'm taking crazy pills here. Reading through the first 5 pages there seems to barely be anyone that remembers just how absolutely CHEESY this guy used to play. It was an absolute joke!! Yes, he did pick up his play tremendously after getting crushed by MC and evened out his game with more standard play, but reading some of the reactions here you'd think we actually lost a premier player.

Either way he's made a name for himself and i wish him the best of luck with what he chooses to pursue next. (though i'm sure he'll be fine as long as he brings all his scv's with him =P. Sorry, couldn't resist)

More pros means more competition. I didn't like his play either, didn't mean he didn't deserve my respect.

To be fair, everyone's clearest memory of Rain revolves around a game that is over a year old. That's hardly flattering.

Hilarious seeing a bunch of bronze to master league players totally bad mouthing rain. You guys couldn't get GM on KR in a million years. He was a great player. Most know for his famous 2 rax, but also very good at macro. The 2 rax is almost impossible to execute these days with the barracks build time nerf, bunker nerf, and queen buff. Yet he still impressively pulls it off. I will miss him. Good luck in his future endeavors.

people that thinks only standard play is "good" is very very wrong, take for example koreans and they dont take "cheese" diferent from anything, its in the game

one factor that is bringing crisis to starcraft is that its too macro now, and there are people hating on players doing the non-standard which makes no sense.....

it's not random at all. even if it were a low-class player (fnatic rain is not), it's an additional way for friends and fans to show appreciation.

if you were participating and practicing in multiple foreign and korean competitions for 2 years, i'm pretty sure you would be happy to atleast see a thread announcing your retirement and message to everybody.

i feel that your post is bad on so many levels.

A player who focused more on all-ins than actual skill, not much of a loss here imo.

However a lot of pro's leaving the scene is not good for the future of SC2.

You're talking about his play style in which the game at the time was all cheese. By the time he retired, he was a good macro player. Look at his recent games.

When it rains, it pours. Best of luck to him, and hope he comes back - maybe with a new nick. Thought he did pretty good not long ago, but then again, time travels fast, especially in eSports.

Sad to see another player go, but if thats what he thinks is best for himself, then that's that.

Also, people who can no longer play SC2 at their peak level can always go to LoL and play with the children, amirite? :D

GL Rain!

Well that sucks
I always liked Rain for the way he evolved from being "cheesy" to a good all round player. Hope that the road you tread from here treats you well! Will always remember the Boxer game at MLG.

There are 2 Rains. You're thinking of SKT T1 Rain who is a protoss formerly known as By.Sun
This Rain is the Terran that played vs MC in GSL Open Season 3
