Nah. Escobar got 3 games for something most people would consider worse than a pedophile joke on b.net.

I believe Kobe Bryant got a $50k fine for a homophobic slur during a game.

Sean Avery got banned from his team for insulting another player's girlfriend. (The "sloppy seconds" incident)

If you know anything about Sean Avery you would know that comment was only the straw that broke the camels back.

Now everyone knows what Stephano is really like...he is typical though, nice and polite and humble before joining a big team. Once he joins a huge team like EG, he forgot all those values and we can all see his true self. Typical
Regarding the imbalance, hilarious to see Zergs defending themselves....

Joking (No one knows for sure if it was a joke or not we are all assuming it was) about raping a 14 year old.

I am with you on this. Irregardless of if he was joking or not, would you say something like this while you were working? I wouldn't think to say anything of the sort at my job. EG really had no other course of action on this one if you ask me; they did the right thing.

He wasn't "on the job." I took it that the whole entire gist of the joke is that Bling was streaming, and he was doing it to cause controversy and get a laugh. Is it unprofessional? Yeah, but the guy is a teenager and plays videogames for a living so I have no clue why you guys expect so much.

Also, Ray Lewis KILLED A PERSON and missed no time in the NFL. Now he's in commercials. Where's the outrage about shit like that?

Maybe Creator.prime or ST_Life can give him a lesson or two on not being a huge sleazebag/nuisance to your team.

They could also give him a lesson on not being interesting outside of their games. I like foreigners in Starcraft 2 because they have actual personality even if it's not always the most mature stuff in the world. I like IdrA for his non-stop attitude, Stephano is fun because of his swagger, NonY is someone you root for despite their troubles and there are countless other examples of foreigners being more interesting as eSports personalities.

Also, huge sleazebag? The dude made a tasteless joke. It wasn't funny, but I remember being 19 and how much of a little shit I was. Cut the kid some slack and get down off your high horse.

A proper analogy would be: you whispered something to a friend in a bus, of which someone behind you recorded 6 sentences and then decided that, because they found what you said inappropriate, you should be fired from your job. In order to ensure that, and disregarding any and all context, this person mails copies of the 6 lines to your work and the people you know.

Totally agree with that.

Yes, I second that. Seriously, half the shit that's in the "news" these days are stories of a similar nature.
You mean I just write stuff here and other people can see it?

That's less money than Escobar got fined, without the suspension. Plus 50k to Kobe is like a parking ticket to your average middle class person. Being suspended for a month without pay is very harsh.

Not disputing that in the least. More trying to emphasize the point that the organization is well within its rights to exact some form of punishment that it deems fit. Some folks are having an unbelievably hard time of understanding this, thats all.

The Kobe thing is a good thing to bring up. $50k sounds like a lot, but he gets paid $27million per season, so that's basically a slap on the wrist. That's a whole 0.18% of his salary. Fucking wow.

Steph loses $8k of his salary and loses opportunities to win more money in tournaments this month. But even losing $8k, that "drags" his salary down to $88,000. So his livelihood is pretty much unaffected. Also consider the shittons of money he's won already.

What this DOES do, since there is no arbitrator in esports, is set precedence over the scene, that even the most popular and accomplished foreigner is not untouchable when dollars are on the line.

I think what EG did is correct. They had no other choice really. They got complaints from their sponsors and they took action. They are a professional organization and they have to act professionally.

What I think is rally stupid is the community's response to a simple comment. In reality, nothing happened. Words were said. It may have been a joke, it may have been misinterpreted. Even if something bad happened, there is no confirmation past a rumor.

Why hundreds of people would send emails to sponsors over this just blows my mind? What do they think that they are doing great justice of something? This reaction to simple things like this is an aweful characteristic of this society.

What are the really doing? its fucking simple.

Sponsors read these emails and the big fucking message they get is "take your money out of esports. If you sponsor a team you risk ruining your entire companies name, by sponsoring one dumb punk who was making jokes on the internet."

Everytime they read these emails, they get closer and closer to the idea of sponsoring these teams, and putting their money is a bad investment, and can potentially harm them a lot more than benefit them. soon sponsors will realize sponsoring a team with this community is not worth the risk, and will stop sponsoring these teams.

And i dont blame em. After i got flooded with emails, I would pull sponsorship immediately, or at least gaurentee not to renew it depending on the contract. not worth the risk.

The thing is, there is a section on Reddit called srs who orchestrated this campaign to email Stephano's sponsors on this issue. One of their stated reasons for this was because they did not like some of the comments in r/starcraft on this issue and wanted to 'punish' the SC2 community. So some of this sponsor contact is motivated by malice towards the SC2 community because they do not like SC2 or the SC2 community on reddit. Some of their actions are not because they were actually offended by Stephano's comments but because they did not like some of the comments about the issue on r/starcraft. It would be like if they read a post they did not like on TL and then decided to try and harm SC2 because of it. It is just spiteful. They are doing this not to punish Stephano but to punish the SC2 community because they don't like it, which is just malicious.

Wasn't this the same section of reddit that emailed Destiny's sponsors and got him fired from his team after that whole nude pics scandal began? I don't even like Destiny, but the actions of this reddit community are just absurd. Emailing sponsors goes FAR beyond any rational response. They can ONLY be acting maliciously with the only intent being to "punish" the SC2 community. The sponsors must get these angry emails and believe that they are the product of genuine outrage, not seeing them as the malicious lies they actually are.

Emailing sponsors and perpetuating the image of gamers as "misogynist losers" really sets back the SC2 community as a whole and completely destroys any sponsor relationship the team had spent so long cultivating. The fact that stephano and EG got targeted this time shows that the entire SC2 community is vulnerable. Stephano is one of the most marketable players and EG is one of the best teams at building relationships with sponsors. If a lesser player were targeted, he would be fired and his career possibly over.

While I agree he deserved it, because he is in a team, when he says stuff like that it affects the whole team, not just him. I really wonder what he actually thinks about that.
I mean, yeah, we've got a formal apology, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't really care.
And I actually would like if he would quit EG, this team won't give him anything ( except money of course ) at best and at worst he will become another pro who doesn't even play on 99% of tournaments, like the rest of EG.

P.S.
Yes, I actually decided to finally register for that post. >.>

im going to assume you've never ever laughed at a comedian

You can debatably joke about rape, you can joke about children. You can't joke about raping children.

If it was even a joke, which is not really believable, given the words that were said and the context they were put in.

Honestly, this isn't the last we will hear about this.

You don't know the context.

Hey, lets Make a gigantic boycott of EG sponsors, and make them a very very bad advertising with our friend and all relationship.

They want to be stupid, lets be stupid too.

As they think in term of images, Maybe when their OWN community (and not just an outside-complaining-comunity of feminist that don't even know what a video game is) will boycott them, they'll think twice.

Good point. I completely understand that. In Escobar's case it wasn't even the league that suspended him, the organization had to suspend him themselves. Unfortunately for Stephano the sponsors of EG have a ton of influence due to the small niche/growing nature of e-sports, so EG had to come down hard on him to appease the corporate suits giving them shit.

Interesting context. One point, however, is that most incidents that are handled within a team aren't arbitrated. They usually executed from within contractual allowances to punish "conduct unbecoming" or some form of moral clause. Similarly, most pro sports organizations, league offices and such, exact punishments without arbitration as well.
