Guys, you're missing a very important piece of the discussion. The first 100m in a 200m race isn't a straightaway - it's curved, so there's no way you could achieve your top speed in the 100m even if you weren't conserving any energy as compared to your top speed in a 100m race. And in the second 100m, you're not going to hit your top speed of course (because you're tiring).
