Howdy there and welcome to the top 50 streamers list thread for this month!
For those of you who don't already know what this is about: I'm gathering various data from all the streams that are presented on teamliquid.net (viewers, game, events, etc.) and use that data to produce the pretty tables you see below. The tables only contain SC2 players (that is, people streaming games of Starcraft 2 being played by themselves) and not casters, teams or other streams. The tables also only contain Starcraft 2 related activities, a SC2 streamer streaming Dota2 or other games is not being taken into account.
For current stream data, go and visit soiii's site http://sc2streamnumbers.com/ where you can check out detailed graphs of stream viewers of every stream. (Thread here). Please check it out, it's pretty awesome. I thought about doing something like that at some point, but soiii did it way better and prettier than I could've ever done.
Now, without further ado, here's this month's tables: (The HTML versions contain some more information due to space reasons.)
Yes, yes, I know that Stephano has left Millenium. But his contract did not end until the 1st of this month, and the table shows data for last month, so all is in order. Besides, I'm curious to find out how many people are going to complain about this in the thread.
Unfortunately, ForGG's stream viewers were reported incorrectly to teamliquid for a couple of days, showing much lower viewer numbers than he actually had, so his actual average stats are better than what we can see here. Sorry, ForGG. :/ Despite this, he still managed to raise his average viewer count!
Another unfortunate issue is that the Korean FXO guys are streaming on YouTube, which does not give us any viewer numbers at all, so they won't appear on this list. Sorry, guys.
Some notable absentees for this month: Naniwa, MarineKing, MaNa, Squirtle, Bomber, Creator, Byun, July.
More generally, there's a notable absence of players of Korean teams streaming. DRG, Seed and Losira is the only player are the only players (thanks, Mozzery!) on a Korean team that made it on either list, everyone else is either teamless or on an international team. It might be that the Koreans found out that streaming is not as lucrative as they initially thought (it takes more than a big name to get good viewer numbers), or that they are worried about giving away their top player's strategies now that the Kespa players are starting to become seriously good at the game. Either way, we're running out of GSL players to watch.
"wayne379" is Hui, the Taiwanese player with the crazy amount of hours streamed. He has two stream accounts on TL.net for some reason.
If things go as expected, EG will thoroughly dominate the top 10 list next month. 3 players in the top 5 this month, maybe 4 out of 5 in the next?
If you find a player with the wrong team associated with him, let me know! It's getting harder and harder to keep that part of the database up to date. Also, if any streamer on the list isn't just playing games but also uses his stream for casting SC2 games, let me know as well. Someone mentioned in the last thread that ProTech is casting Korean games occasionally, but whenever I check he's playing 2v2s, so he's staying on the list for now.
That's all I can think of for now. Hope you guys enjoyed!
I like the viewers per hour chart, not sure if new, but never noticed it before. It's an interesting way to look at how much entertainment an individual delivers through personal stream in a month.
Love the fact that Grubby is up there with the big players. He's really getting there also in terms of his play. Awesome charts btw. Thanks for the great work!
Of the Korean players on Korean teams you said DRG was the only one to make either list. I'm guessing you missed seed and Losira making 27th and 30th respectively on the average viewers list, unless due to sponsorship, LG IM is now considered a foreign team, if so my apologies. If you also meant only player to make BOTH lists my apologies as well, as those 2 only appeared on average viewer lists.
Guys do you know the numbrs of TSL4 streams? I'm under impression they dropeed quite significantly compared to other tournaments as well as TSL3. Is it correct?
Destiny's average viewers count isn't that high at all :O I thought it was higher than that! Well i guess some of the stramers has much higher viewers count.

It seems like if you start streaming a lot, your average viewer count will deflate to a more steady number. Idra used to pull a metric ass-ton when he rarely streamed, and now that he streams more he has less on average (yet obviously he will still make more from simply streaming more.)

it makes sense if you stream alot then people wont do anything to see it because they can jsut catch the next time

Well, let's see.. These are the total numbers of viewers watching a SC2 player stream in a given month (so I'm excluding casters, events and other games):
sqlite> select log.game, sum(viewers) from log inner join dates on dates.d_id=log.d_id inner join players on players.p_id=log.p_id where date>"2012-04" and date<"2012-05" and log.game="SC2" and players.streamertype="Player" group by log.game; SC2|21975553 sqlite> select log.game, sum(viewers) from log inner join dates on dates.d_id=log.d_id inner join players on players.p_id=log.p_id where date>"2012-05" and date<"2012-06" and log.game="SC2" and players.streamertype="Player" group by log.game; SC2|16540003 sqlite> select log.game, sum(viewers) from log inner join dates on dates.d_id=log.d_id inner join players on players.p_id=log.p_id where date>"2012-06" and date<"2012-07" and log.game="SC2" and players.streamertype="Player" group by log.game; SC2|16310764 sqlite> select log.game, sum(viewers) from log inner join dates on dates.d_id=log.d_id inner join players on players.p_id=log.p_id where date>"2012-07" and date<"2012-08" and log.game="SC2" and players.streamertype="Player" group by log.game; SC2|15699150 sqlite> select log.game, sum(viewers) from log inner join dates on dates.d_id=log.d_id inner join players on players.p_id=log.p_id where date>"2012-08" and date<"2012-09" and log.game="SC2" and players.streamertype="Player" group by log.game; SC2|16604833
The numbers themselves don't really mean much, but they allow us to see a trend. And in this case we can see that the viewer numbers have been mostly steady in the last few months after a noticeable decline in May. Back then it has been speculated that Summer is to blame.

Whoops, my bad. You're quite right, somehow I missed the two IM players. I'll fix the OP. Still, there's less and less Korean team players streaming every month. :/

I don't have any numbers for TSL3, but here's the numbers for TSL4 so far:
sqlite> select events.name,avg(viewers) from log inner join events on events.e_id=log.e_id where events.name>"TSL4 Round" and events.name<"TSL5" and log.p_id=5642 group by log.e_id; TSL4 Round of 32 Day 1|17457.5714285714 TSL4 Round of 32 Day 2|21978.5555555556 TSL4 Round of 32 Day 3|15957.875 TSL4 Round of 32 Day 4|23352.0454545455 TSL4 Round of 16 Sunday|13474.6315789474 TSL4 Round of 16 Monday|16443.2272727273 TSL4 Round of 8 Day 1|8554.17647058824 TSL4 Round of 8 Day 2|13729.0476190476 TSL4 Semifinals|10622.4285714286 sqlite>
The numbers depend a lot on the competition. Going head-to-head with The International sure didn't help TSL's viewership.
Also, I'm sorry guys that I'm not presenting numbers like these in a more pretty format in the OP. Life's keeping me too busy to do that currently. :/

Stephano is consistently the most popular streamer no matter where he streams from - Korea, EU or NA. This past week he has been the most popular SC2 streamer while streaming from the EG House.
Thank you for your hard work and diligence despite rl obligations.
Perhaps I overlooked from where you get the viewer statistics, but are the viewer numbers solely taken from people who watch the stream via TL or does watching directly from TwitchTV, etc. count, as well?

Teamliquid takes the viewer numbers straight from the streaming sites, so it doesn't matter where you're watching the streams from. I could do the same to get slightly more accurate numbers, but that's way more work than just taking them straight from TL.

Amazing to see how well Apollo is doing too.
im pretty sure IdrA has beaten him more the Stephano beat IdrA Stephano won because you had to watch live you couldnt use VoDS so if IdrA and Stephano were streaming its smarter to watch Steph live then watch IdrAs vod

Like I said, Stephano is the most popular streamer. Idra is the second most. You can see the figures. http://sc2streamnumbers.com/
If they both stream at the same time from the EG Lair, you will see that their respective figures bear this out.
Protech streams more hours then anyone else?. I know he is on all the time but I assumed there would be ppl who streamed more. I watch him a lot and he doesn't cast korean games, he ladders 2v2. He might watch a game every now and then and just share his opinions but very rarely.

Thank you for your response. Guess I don't understand how the viewer counts are calculated when they can be off by over a hundred. I'll try to grasp a better understanding.

Thanks for the reply. By the looks of things TSL4 has definitely lower viewer count than TSL3. I remember watching semifinals of TSL3 with well over 30K people on stream which is obviously no the case with TSL4.
Great stuff Conti, keep posting this informationm it's really insightful to the current state of SC2 development.
I'm not with a51, I enjoy being on this list but wish I was better. Hopefully I will improve enough to deserve this status and eventually get onto a team or be featured ><

Yup very true. When idra rarely streamed he'd get 12k+ viewers all the time, let alone I remember him hitting 20k one time.
I hope he realizes the potential income from his viewer count and starts streaming more. Atleast he has been streaming the last few days now that hots beta has been released.

This is part of it but a lot of it i feel is IdrA's poor results. When he was pulling insane numbers he was considered a code-s quality player. You see Stephano pull numbers that IdrA used to pull because of how good he is.

My apologies, and thanks for letting me know! I took that information from Liquipedia, where it said you're on their academy thingy. I see that you fixed that yourself now, though. It's fixed for next month for my list, too. And congratulations for making it into the top 50.
Wow i didnt even know about his thread until i saw it in the news thread. This thread is amazing, stephano doubling idras viewer numbers for the same amount of time, thats a huge increase in profit margin from streaming.
I would be intrested to see how often they run adds and their revenue per hour
Then I would also like to see the sc2 streamer numbers be compared to other games like dota and lol to see how it stacks up.

Well they run ads after every game (idra/stephano do anyway). So average game lasts about 15 minutes I would say they on average run 4 commercials an hour. Sometimes they do multiple I think after a long game also but I can't recall.
As for revenue yeah can't tell you that I don't know xD

I only log streamer data from the streams linked on teamliquid. That does include Dota2 and LoL streams, but not nearly all of them, unlike SC2 streams. So comparing what I have wouldn't be all that useful. Now that TL supports Dota2, however, I'm hopeful that all significant Dota2 streamers will be linked.
Generally speaking, though, popular LoL streamers get about twice as many viewers as popular SC2 streamers, as far as I can tell.
