For the sake of esports, everyone needs to upvote this, there is no way in hell we can miss this opportunity. Since we couldn't see MC do it at the beach or anything, this is easily a worthy replacement. Seeing PSY himself do it live at the GSL is obligatory if the chance exists, so please help make this happen or you're ruining esports.
Just curious, do peopple saying yes actually like the song? I always got the feeling it was kinda liked in the same way as people 'liked' putting Rebecca Black on around other people and if that's the case it'd seem a poor choice. If a lot of people actually do like it though, then good luck to it.
Ehm, how popular is this song in Korea? Because when I was watching the video on Youtube a couple of days ago it had like ~4 million views and now it's almost 8. And since it became like the National Anthem of Starcraft 2 this weekend we must have given the video alot of views. :D

Friday/Baby etc were mostly internet memes, as in they were so bad people trolled eachother by linking them (both of them have/had abysmal like percentage), whereas this is genuine great song that you pretty much never find anyone hating on with 98% likes on YT, so yes I'm fairly sure people are serious in upvoting this

it's the #1 song in korea by a pretty heavy margin atm, it's more of a viral thing that you see/hear at every street corner and whatknot, I.E. it's everywhere

I like the song, I don't think it's a good song per say but hell it makes me smile everytime I hear it and thats good enough for me.
never heard of him,but if hes popular in korean, then certainly make it happen . I just typed in youtube his name, his gungnam style music seems to have a strong cross mix, Not bad.

He's also buddy buddy with all the major popular hosts and stars. Those people you see him dancing with in Gangnam Style...most are INSANELY popular, especially the dude in the Yellow.
What's interesting is that Khaldor said the entertainment companies are looking to gauge foreign interest. Maybe they've noticed that there has been a overall rise in the amount of Kpop being consumed by none koreans and the rise of SC2 has coincided with this. I would love the Kpop stuff to be in the GSL...and Gangnam style is definitely the song to do it to.
Yoo Jae Suk aka The Nation's MC. Hilarious comedian, captains a lot of variety shows, most notably Running Man.
But seriously, Gangnam Style is popular. People legitimately like it, as in, not liking it to be ironic. Psy performing at a GSL-- that's big. Not sure about the time when next finals comes up, but still. Pretty big.

i don't think Khaldor or any you know how big YG-E is, it's on par with JYP-E. their rooster includes artists such as se7en, big bang, 2ne1 and psy, just to name a few. these people are the lady gaga, usher and will.i.am of kpop (btw, usher and will.i.am works with half of them) while this idea is funny at most, i dont think it's realistic but hey, sure, why not. best of luck

First of all, it is YG-E. And although YG-E is a huge company with some of the biggest stars in kpop, the kpop scene in general is much smaller than US pop(although it is growing). So you can't really compare them to Gaga, Usher, etc. Even the TOP stars (Girl's Gen, Big Bang, Super Junior) perform on weekly music shows like Music Bank, Inki, etc. Can you see Gaga, Usher doing that in US? MTV having a hourly music show and Gaga would go in once a week for 3-4 weeks to perform for 5 minutes?
Kpop groups even hold guerilla performances and play at much smaller venues. GSL finals is actually pretty big in korea plus you get the international audience. The big three (SM, YG, JYP) are spending millions to try to promote their groups to foreign audiences. I am sure they would be ok to put on one performance if they knew the foreign community was interested.

More like switching from pepperoni to macaroni because the new pepperoni has a different recipe or something, I think.
But yeah, pretty cool to see this getting a lot of exposure. Helping to unify the fans in a way and also getting esports a lot of recognition. A lot of random plebs are seriously getting exposed to it too, so it's fantastic for esports overall that it's getting associated with gangnam style :D

if that happens i can die happily. although hyuna would be stuck in a loop of sexy dancing for my entertainment so I never die? oh gosh the imagination

what kind of reasoning is that, that's like saying whichever song has had the biggest budget lain down into its writing and production is by default the best one, or perhaps the one which takes the biggest toll out of its singer

Psy wrote the entire song + did the entire choreography. He literally made the entire song himself.

its not a good song, but its an entertaining song.
"good" is a matter of opinion, and means different things to everyone. "entertaining" is entertaining. its still subjective but not as much.
It would only be a marketing gimmick, and not being a fan of marketing gimmicks in general, I'd rather not have this happen on that basis alone. However my care level isn't sufficiently high to oppose it vehemently either.
At this point it's almost certain that it will happen, or at least that the community response has been overall positive enough to encourage it to happen. Either way, arguing is pointless and this thread isn't about the quality of the song itself anyway.
And yes, in music, as in all other things in existence, there is an objective measure of quality. It's just that people too often confuse quality with the extent to which they enjoy (or hate) something on a personal level.

I'm 99% sure you don't win discussions on the internet. It's always a circle jerk, and that's why TL is pretty cool. They usually put ends to circle jerks. Reddit on the other hand...not even real people go to that site.
Eulogy, you sound really upset about a lot of things. Maybe just chill out and go about your life. You've said multiple times your arguments, opinionated as they are, are apparently not getting through to anyone.
Regardless of who the artist is, what he did in creating the song, and how "good" it is, it is objectively popular right now both in this community and I assume Korea as well judging by posts in this thread. Therefore it'd be great to have him perform at a GSL event.

Yes.. the world is doomed because bad musicians are getting paid millions -.- Talk about being over dramatic... Yes it's a shitty situation, when entertainers(Good or Bad) are making 10x as much as people saving lives or scientists. But thats not the point of this thread. This thread is about a song that I'd say the large majority of the community likes being played live at GSL. How is this a bad thing for starcraft? The song is hugely popular in Korea and can only give them good attention. Whether the song in your opinion is good or bad is completely irrelevant here.

The positive attention? He is number 1 on the Korean charts. More media attention = more fans and more opportunities with sponsors = great for the community.
Edit: plus there is no downside, and as I said the majority of the community likes the song. So even if it doesn't help in any other way, people can enjoy listening to a song they like at the finals.
Full support! Something like this can ONLY be fantastic for the growth of GSL, the growth of Korean and foreign viewership alike, the growth of e-sports!

I'm fine with more IU as well.
But imagine. GSL gets an OSL-style intro, but with Psy doing Gangnam Style with all the GSL players dancing in it like a music video. That would be phenomenal.
I have a hard time understanding why "e-sports" is a reason enough to like a do something ("for the sake of e-sports" in the OP), specially when it comes down to promoting yet another generic song with the same beats i've heard at least a hundred time. This song is shit as most of the musical production of Korea is. I'm not saying koreans aren't capable of producing good music. I've had the luck of hearing a lot of concerts from one of the best, i believe, music directors alive today, Myung Chung, from the Orchestre Philarmonique de Radio France. But korean pop music is a match made in hell between girls/boys band from the eighties and kanye west copycats.

It's not just the song, the MV is really interesting and funny (to me).
Also, music is subjective. Some people like catchy songs (pop) that aren't very "complicated", while others like "art music", etc. etc.

Whether it's 'good' or not is arguable and comes down to personal preference. But for the sake of e-sports, it will help. Getting an entertainer who is 1# on the Korean charts is great exposure/popularity boost. Having him performer is a great thing for e-sports.

The thing for me is that the song is already being driven into the ground, by the time the next 'gsl event' happens it will be even less relevant than it is now. It would have been perfect at the last GSTL finals.

If you don't like certain music, by all means go ahead. That is your personal opinion. However, you're not the ultimate judge of what's "good music" and "bad music" for everyone else. Realize that people around the world have widely different preferences and that often depends a lot on their cultural backgrounds. You're calling something "a match made in hell from the eighties and kanye west copycats" because you don't like it. Mentioning Chung does not excuse you from generalizing and degrading the entire Korean pop music industry.
I myself come from a classical music background and I have pretty clear likes and dislikes, but I don't go around saying "god, that country's pop music is garbage".

For the most part, he's right. It's intentionally unoriginal, and pretty much removes any creativity from the equation. It's totally okay to like garbage music... I find some of it catchy... but it's still garbage.

Well, it doesn't make much sense to say that garbage is intentionally unoriginal, does it? If he dislikes it, that's fine, but he seems to think he's doing something more than uttering his personal preference. (He's not.)
It's okay. I hate Kpop, I really do, but irreverence makes anything good. I watch those other Kpop videos where I'm supposed to take these "singers" seriously, like they all gathered, wrote and composed this fluff themselves, sincerely... and the accompanying video is some dramatic short story about a girl who owns a shop, or is visiting a shop, and is in love with some metrosexual male who also happens to be there.... Then I see PSY, and I feel better about the whole genre. "Take a shot of me rapping and then zoom out to show me sitting on a toilet." That suits me better. And honestly, yes, it suits pop music better.

Plus, it's all the more reason to seed KeSPA players like Leta and Jaedong into the GSL. They have experience with this kind of stuff and will not disappoint in the entertainment department.
I love the catchy song- its wonderful and awesome. But what does "gangnam style" mean anyways?! or is it just nonsense? But even if it is I'd love to see this in the GSL

Gangnam is one of the most affluent districts in Seoul, so I think Gangnam style means a very affluent lifestyle. "Oppan Gangnam style" = I'm Gangnam style
this needs to happen more than anything else in the world..i see this turning into Semi-Pro though, with the players being forced to entertain in other ways, i like it :D

Hey buddy, no need to be a giant douche. I was just saying it's not a good song, and I would rather not watch it at GSL. Also, how do you know it's so popluar in Korea? Are you Korean? It just shows how bad music has fallen in the past 10 years. I guess real music is dead. How sad...

Like certain other Asian languages, Korean uses a number of different pronouns depending on social status and relationship. "Oppa" is often used by young women to refer to older male non-romantic friends, and for such older male friends to refer to themselves. "Oppa Gangnam Style" would mean "Your older male buddy (in this case referring to Psy himself) is 'Gangnam Style.'"
Edit: I know almost no Korean, so I couldn't possibly say whether "Hey sexy lady, Oppa Gangnam Style" is supposed to come off as somewhat creepy and forward, but given the content of the video, I suspect probably so, and it's probably a lot more funny for a Korean speaker.

The only opinion I stated about my taste is that I enjoy some pop music. Do I see it as an art form, though? No. I see good music as an expression of emotion - something you can reflect on and something that reveals information about the artist, the listener, or both.
This song was made solely to make money, push an extravagant lifestyle, and make people want to dry hump each other drunk in a night club. Just like you enjoying this music is an opinion, me calling it garbage is an opinion too.
This does go a little beyond personal opinion. I call it garbage music because it's throw-away. It will have it's week(s) in the spotlight, everyone will get sick of it, and it'll show up again years later a couple times as a 'hey, remember this?' track. If you find throwing things away to be offensive, then I suppose I've offended you.
I admit to painting with an overly-broad stroke. There is some pop music with emotion, substance and creativity that does last, and becomes a 'classic.' This song isn't a good example of that though.
To end on a lighter note, I think the video is quite brilliant. It makes me giggle my ass off. The guy's definitely a great entertainer, and a great salesman. I don't see how GOM could go wrong getting this guy to perform live... maybe even guest-MC

Music elitists are too funny, especially when they don't understand that different kinds of music serve different purposes. You aren't supposed to listen to PSY and analyze its structure. It doesn't push boundaries and it isn't supposed to. You can enjoy different music for different reasons you know.
The same people that are poo-pooing this song and name-dropping whatever classical composer pleases them are probably the same people that think death metal isn't music and electronic music is artless and just for dancing.

It's fun and it's good entertainment. Don't over analyze it.

The same people that are poo-pooing this song and name-dropping whatever classical composer pleases them are probably the same people that think death metal isn't music and electronic music is artless and just for dancing.
You don't make a good argument with broad generalizations. You should also avoid using the "don't understand" phrase. It's about as effective as '...so, umm, like...'
Gangnam Style is artless, and just for dancing. Daft Punk's Tron score is musical art.
Thinking one is true doesn't mean I think the other is false.
If you enjoy this music, then listen to it. The one's saying, 'this sucks,' are just as valid as the ones saying, 'this rocks,' though. There'd be just as much from both sides in a 'Gangnam Style sucks' thread. That's the way discussion boards work.

No, I think "Eat It" is terrible because it's childish, annoying, and meaningless.
You are too good bahahahahahahaha
It's meaningless! Throw it away! Who the fuck wants a song about eating! It's clearly not as important as some other random love song! It's childish because nobody eats except for kids! It's annoying although it has exactly the same tune as "Beat It"!

Good job on making art sound like you can pour it in a mug, half-full/half-empty style.

Thanks for explaining! So it's kind of like 's at the end of an English proper noun?
It's technically new, but I already saw this a while ago. It was definitely out before Gangnam style.
Anyways, whether Psy performs at GSL or not does not necessarily mean it will/will not benefit "esports". That's such an exaggeration to claim this is for, "e-sports".

IT will benefit through exposure, gangnam style is known by many now so hearing of a live performance somewhere will encourage them to look where it was performed, many people still don't even know that esports exists.

I think it's safe to say he was calling any country's pop music garbage.
For the most part, he's right. It's intentionally unoriginal, and pretty much removes any creativity from the equation. It's totally okay to like garbage music... I find some of it catchy... but it's still garbage.
In what sense is it garbage?
did you not read his post? "it's intentionally unoriginal" which is dead on and is a perfectly good reason.
Well, it doesn't make much sense to say that garbage is intentionally unoriginal, does it? If he dislikes it, that's fine, but he seems to think he's doing something more than uttering his personal preference. (He's not.)

Totally agreed. Debating whether this song is art misses the point completely. It has made 10 million+ people laugh and smile, and that's a beautiful thing.
Q: We heard that you plan to visit the U.S. next week. Some Korean media have reported that you and Justin Bieber are going to do joint projects. Is that true?
A: No, that’s not true. But it is true that I am going to meet with Scooter Braun, who produced Justin Bieber. Mr. Braun actually wrote about me on Twitter. It will just be a casual meeting. I don’t know where some of the reporters got their information. It sounds like Justin Bieber and I have already become best buddies! I am a bit embarrassed. To be honest, I don’t expect people in the U.S. to recognize me or anything. I don’t take in the media hype but I plan to do some media interviews while I’m there.

I hope eventually he becomes internationally well-known though. Perhaps the mass exposure of kpop internationally will come not from our normal kpop but from PSY keke.

However, as I got older, I lost my passion, either that or I grew up, and realised that everyone enjoys music that they find appealing. That led me to stop bitching about music I didn't like, and just leave my comments to myself as people will like what appeals to their very being.
The music is tongue in cheek about Korean lifestyles of the youth with money. It's got a catchy beat, and the words (even if you don't understand them' fit perfectly with the song which is going to make it a hit. Not many songs manage to hit that harmony where everything fits, and more often than not there are terrible contortions of sentences or something really off beat to help the lyrics fit.
The song just feels like summer to me, which is why I enjoy it. It's carefree, and doesn't really give a fuck which is excactly how I feel during the summer months, as I have English camps where I teach and frankly, I don't give 2 shits. Psy's music always has that knack of defining a part of the year, just by how well his music is put together. Right now is the part of my 1st year in Korea OST, along with some other Kpop that I originally hated, but learnt to love.....
This song just became a "hit" in a Dutch national radio show (3FM Coen en Sander show) (http://coenensandershow.bnn.nl/blog/257/gangnam-style-dendert-door.html). It will get played this week about 2 times a day on quite a popular show... Quite weird to hear this on national radio to be honest.

I usually don't complain when people make fanclubs for players/casters who may or may not deserve it, but this is just silly.

Basically 2 people in strange big animal costumes doing the dance xD I was like wtf?! They did it during the break when nothing was happening (between boxer-yellow show match and the finals iirc)

It's one of the most important things music can be, catchy as hell. Not to mention the video clip is crazy
I still think its amazing, hearing it on mainstream radio over here in Australia has given me hope in the world. I think I first saw it during one of Ooophidians castings of Dual League and it was at 1.5m views... never expected this, despite knowing it was absolutely awesome.

That would be such a blast if it were to happen.. But i dont really think that it will. Sadly.

You are listening music the wrong way and killing the Music industry.
This thread is silly, whether or not Psy performs at the GSL does not "influence" esports. Saying, "Do it for esports" is very annoying and an absurd comment to make simply because he is a popular music act all over and tournaments happen to play his song.
Personally, I think the song is ok, but I will not watch the GSL whether or not he performs. The only thing that affects whether I watch the GSL is the players, and the date/time.
He's way too big for eSports and owes nothing to us.... but of course it would be amazing and in fact would make my GSL viewing experience way better xD

Yes sir.
Ellen is huge in the US.
You are comparing one of the most popular day time television talk shows to something that is livestreamed.
PSY is everywhere now. He's scheduled to appear everywhere.
Bigger than Rain appearing on the Colbert Report. He's the IT guy in Korean right now with the mainstream exposure so the idea of him appearing on the GSL to perform anytime soon is very far-fetched.

When I first saw it on some stream, I found it hilarious, as in "omg, koreans sure make some silly music! ", and I showed to some friends as an example of silly k-pop. Then yesterday there was this lateline or whatever on australian TV, and they talked about this song, and I was first "oh, they cover k-pop, cool!", then I heard "number one in Australia", which would have made me spit my cereals all over the table if I were that meme...
Not sure if it gives me hope for the world though. Rather it feels like maybe "the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" maybe caught the mentality of "intelligent life" pretty well....
I bet Blizzard have the firepower to bring him in. Seriously, they knew we were into this the moment it came out - it infested esports and Starcraft reddit absurdly quickly.
Hell, we got Ozzy bloody Osbourne to Blizzcon. PSY should be easy enough.

yeah PSY is kind of a big deal in korea, gangnam style isn't his first hit, it's part of his 6th album... sure none of his songs has reached global status like gangnam style has (and maybe sc2 had to do with it somewhat) but PSY is actually very popular in korea, he just has been absent for a while because I think he took a break from making music.
