Hello dear TL community,
I was at WCS.fr last week and since the competition was kinda slow, I had the chance to sit for a while with Stephano for quite a long talk ( we had to do it in two parts though as it's hard to keep him too long)
It's in French but with subtitles (sorry about the eventual tumors), I hope you guys enjoy it!
Part 1
Part 2
Thank you for watching

Great interview, watching it atm, but Its hard for me (with ADHD) to actually watch ANY interview. Is there a transcript somewhere?

I might have a .word version of the subtitles somewhere :D
Amazing interview, you've done a great job. Thanks!
Watching right now. Thanks!
great interview, the translation is so much better than most foreign language interviews it doesnt come across as bland as many others, good stuff.
Thanks a ton, amazing interview, best I've seen with Stephano by far and it was great to see him totally comfortable and giving honest answers, you managed to get an interview with the 'real' Stephano, not the showman, and that's the first I've seen.
It was interesting to hear about his thoughts on GSL format. Other than that, i think that it's obvious he will join EG in September
Just logged in to say that this interview was amazing, really amazing, great work, very good questions and interviewer!
Really nice interview ! Lelfe forever !
His answers on his dislike for the format of the GSL and his 'instinct' for playing the game are really interesting. It's a shame that it won't be that long until he leaves the scene for education but while we do have him it's great to have a foreign player with such talent.
amazing in-depth interview and really good questions, enjoyed this very much, thanks!
Nice interview Thanks!
Nice job LeLfe. You had dozens of interesting questions and you asked them smoothly one after another without any problems or breaks. That's just great preparation. I've done several interviews myself and I know that it's not at all as easy as it seems.
Good interviews and very good interviewer !
quite interesting to see the difference between his french interviews and his english ones. he still has the same personality. but he seems to give alot better and longer answers in french. it was nice to see him less limited in this interview :D
...eventual tumors?! Guess I'm watching this just to check whether it was typo or Stephano has cancer :D
AHAHAH I was listening without watching, and at the IdrA bit in part 1, it went like this : "he has self esteem so he doesn't really come to talk to me, and.... he is SO DUMB", I was like WTF he actually said that in an interview are you serious ?
..then I went back and watched it to see someone launching pens at Stephano, ahah, that's better :p
Good job LeLfe. Not only did you asked interesting questions, but you'll manage to run the all interview quite smoothly even though Stephano is not the most expansive guy. Thank you very much monsieur !

Well, speaking in French allows him to be less stereotypical because of two things I think : 1/ he masters way more the subtleties of this language, and 2/ he is less forced to embody his role-play character when he is into the French scene.
EDIT : If I was allowed to post in French, my posts would have been better too :p
Btw, sadly the english translation has a lot of errors (ie. from not accurate to real mistranslations), and is missing things... :/ It's a *very* good interview nonetheless. I don't have the time needed to rework the phrasing or write down all errors I noticed, but if you have the time LeLfe, really, ask someone to proof it again :s It'd be a shame to keep so many errors in an interview of this quality, they are really rare.
nice interviews! he seems very humble and gentle.
I think it's very interesting and wise that he says you should quit when you're at the top of your game and not after you've fallen
Awesome interview

Great interview, shows Stephano in a bit of a new light for me, as I feel he sort of plays a persona when he's interviewed in English. Also love seeing people speaking their native tongue in general.
Very nice interview, Stephano is very honest and direct with his responses, a bit like Huk (carmac did a good interview with him)
Wow that was actually pretty good, thanks for the interview + subtitles!
very good interview! glad stephano will play GSL.
I love this type of interview style....learned so much about Stephano.
would be fun to see '' the decision'' with stephano in september
It's always nice to see a good interviewer ask really good questions. Good job on the interview LeLfe you really did a good job. I learned alot of new things about Stephano and it was fun to watch.
Good luck to Stephano in GSL and WCS and all the other tournaments he is playing in and I wish him good luck in finding the best team he can find in september.

Stephano is a top 2 foreigner (with Naniwa) and, in day to day life, I like his matter of fact attitude
Having said that it's disappointing he doesn't seem to have a "passion" for the game like Naniwa.
It seems, for him, it's essentially "I can make some money, travel... I'll do it for a bit, why not".
Not blaming him for it whatsoever, it's a completely reasonable way to think but, as a fan, I wish he had more fire for the game.
Michael Jordan is an easy example. I wouldn't want to be friends with him but he was a good player to be a fan of as he let nothing come between him and being the best.
Bon travail LeLfe! Cette entrevue était vraiment intéressante. C'est surtout bien d'avoir du contenu francophone quand on est habitué à lire des nouvelles sur Starcraft uniquement en anglais.
I like the frankness of both the interviewer and the interviewee. There's lots of interviews out there where players dicuss the game, but it's great to learn a bit more about their true personalities and how they view their career.
I wish I had been able to have a chat with him at the NASL!
Great interview. He seemed a lot more... normal... than in most of his interviews.
really enjoyed this interview! makes me sad that he'll quit soon though ;_;
best of luck until then!
Good interview, subtitles weren't the best though, more was said than was transcribed, the translation was more of a summary on occasion.
Enjoyed it nonetheless, made me work my rusty French skills!
good interview. Will eagerly await his results in gsl
Thank you very much for this interview, interesting stuff.
Excellent interview with great in depth questions that answered about everything I wanted to know (and more!). Very well done sir, even though, as some people mentioned, the translation isn't able to convey all of Stephanos points.
Amasing interview. Proberly the best Interview I eve seen with Stephano. Welldone to the journalist.

great interview, better than any of his english interviews
Wow, GREAT interview.
Really nice work, thx a lot.
a few spelling mistakes in the subtitles, but other than that excellent interview 10/10! =D
really good interview, 100x better than any english interview of stephano :D
I just want to express my gratitude for this interview. This is the first time I've really felt that I gained an understanding of Stephano, and it was really nice. Before this interview, he was just so foreign to me, the random guy that shot into the scene, destroys everyone, and never practices... lol. After how funny he is in a lot of his English interviews, it was nice to get some real answers from him!

actually michael jordan did not really like basket ball, if he did he would not have quit basket ball to play base ball, fail at it then come back.. Im sure michael was like , well i guess im good at it, ill do it anyway. Might be the same for stephano.

After winning IPL3, then ESWC, and currently branded as the best foreigner in SC2, he goes on to say
"I [still] didn't think I was the best, not at all.. I knew I had not yet met the best Koreans"
What a baller. He knows that you're nobody unless you do well in the GSL.

You are a great interviewer. Definitely knew when and how to probe for more information, and somehow managed to get a solid 20+ minutes of interview with Stephano.
lolll him saying about Idra '' quest-ce qu'il est con!!! ''
2 guys that are so in love with themselves that jealousy makes them hate the other one.
but its cool for once to have some progaming content in french and that doesnt suck ballz
He never says Idra is dumb. Someone throws something at him, and he says that that guy is dumb. It just happens to be while he's talking about Idra.
Good interview. Translation is fine for the most part.
wow what a long interview, nice
Very nice interview! Thanks
thank you guys so much for all these nice comments, really means a lot to me (some of you got me blushing ^^)
@nouar I only subtitled the 2nd part and corrected the 1st (don't have much time either to be honnest) I do think there are few approximations to have idioms/ readable sentences, but I didn't see any mistranslations, can still pm me if needed
@kevin_sorbo he doesn't say it about idra but about one of his friend who threw something at him
Nice interview! I am really hoping he does well in the GSL.

He also started playing baseball in honor of his father.
Seriously... the stuff people spew on these forums...

If Stephano is really truthful about how he approaches the game and not practicing much then he is the true prodigy of this esport, forget Flash and Jaedong. It will be a sad day when he quits.

It just happens that you need far less practice at SC2 than what you need at BW. I still respect Flash and Jaedong more because the game they play(ed) is far more demanding and harder to master. And no, i'm not a hardcore BW fan, i barely played the game and didn't watched that many pro-games, but i know enough to weight the difference between the two games.
EDIT : HOLY SHIT SORRY I AM TIRED AND I JUST STARTED ANOTHER INSTANCE OF BW vs SC2 BY MISTAKE. IGNORE THIS AND GO ON WITH YOU DAY.
Totally agree with him about GSL format. Great interview.

He didn't qualify for TSL 4, hasn't done shit in korea, didn't win a major tournament before NASL in a little while. He's still a favorite but not a *real* favorite in the bonjwa sense of the word, like flash was, and plus it's a different and easier game. If he wins every tournament he enters this year including the GSL then your opinion will become valid.

he only tried his luck twice in TSL4 qualifier (including one he had to forfeit) and his only Korean experience was the Blizzard cup where he ended up 2-2 in his group, i don't think you can judge him by these competitions

I agree, so we all have to wait before anyone can use the words "true prodigy" be used to describe stephano. I think his image is kind of bullshit, though... I'm not ready to believe he (doesn't) practice the way he says. Although if he is that good naturally, I don't know if I would respect the idea of a player not practicing and winning everything more than someone who's naturally talented AND plays all day every day to win. I think we can gain more as people from learning from those who earn things from really really hard work.

He is seen as on even footing with even the very, very best Koreans, there is basically no one that you could say: "Well, that guy is the clear favorite over Stephano".
This alone makes him (the only) foreign Bonjwa ... As for the real thing.. Time will tell.
Great interview. It's good to have a French interview of Stephano so he's really able to speak his mind and not limited by his English skills. And LeLfe is great ; he has intelligent questions and a nice rythm for the interview.
Hey great interview! Nice one, LeLfe! Thank you for doing such a great inteview with superb and pertinent questions, and thanks also for sharing it with us at TL with English subtitles. Appreciate it, LeLfe.
My reading of Stephano's answers is that he is likely to move to EG when his current contract expires. I suspect his bargaining position will be even stronger by then.

Really great interview, you've done a great job LeLfe !

And if you watched the games you would see despite him winning he was having sloppy plays and lack of practice showed even in his ZvP. Which is worrying because if this tournament consisted of top terrans and zergs it could look different. I agree he can win vs any protoss with or without practice with even making lack of practice mistakes (no 4th, late gas, mineral flood, sometimes sloppy injects while in roach agression mode) but in terms of ZvT it always looked different for him.
Comparing him to Flash and Jaedong is completely out of place. And im saying that as his fan.

Thanks a lot, those were great interviews with good questions. Sounds like he's definately going to join EG

nice one LeLfe
i dont really understand why everibody says after this itw that he will go to EG. I believe it's a mistake in the subtitle because i heard it in french, and he just speak about EG house. I mean he's expression in french and his attitude don't match with the fact that everybody says on this topic "after seeing this itw, it's sure he will join EG"

nope it's not due to the subs, French react quite in the same way on aaa (and don't worry we got M fans to defend both point of views). As far as I'm concerned, his will to move is not "that" obvious in what he says but he surely values EG highly, we'll have to wait till september anyway, it's still any big team's game!

Indeed you are right in some part, but we don't just feel/understand the same thing when we listen to stephano's answers. Point of vue i guess .... ;D

well he said that the salary has the biggest impact on his decision. ( a´nd there are a lot of teams with good and nice players). When you think about that for a moment it's not that hard to guess who will offer the highes amount in september...

I really did my best to remain as neutral as possible team wise and focus on him more than on the teams. Since the only one inducing there might be an issue with the understanding the subs give is part of M, i guess it's ok

Great interview. I tried doing it without the subtitles but I couldn't. I can read french fine but listening to it is another thing (went too fast to actually understand what was being said). I think I'll have to freshen up my french a bit.
Having questions flow like that is quite a talent. So many interviews are the generic 'how are you doing' 'what do you think your chances are' style. Impressive.

This interview is great. And about the team stuff, sorry VelJa but he enumerates what he thinks is a good team for him, and then throughout the interview, on almost every criteria, point out that M isn't really on par. So although I would'nt say he specifically discarded M, it seems safe to asume that he doesn't put M first place.
Props to the interviewer also for asking all these great questions without a paper near him. Stephano is great.

Great questions! That´s how interviews should look like.

Good that it's in French.
Now I can practice the latter and listen to talk about SC at at the same time.
But, most importantly, I'm convinced that interviews get more depth without a language barrier, even if it's a small one. Stephano's English is good, but witticisms and precision of expression do get lost if one's not speaking their mother tongue.
