If you chear for a team, you dont give a shit about the race of the individual players on your team, you care about your team, because that is your identity. If you are a MAN U fan, and they signed, any world class player from another nation, say Messi, are they going to not be able to identify with him or cheer for him because hes Argentinian and not British? No, they will like him, because he makes their TEAM (which is what they are passionate about) better.
It really depends on the sport. In football, american football, hockey, and other sports like that, the team is what is most important because the teams are marketed as a unit in itself, as having a history. But, the more individual the sport is, the more relating to individual players matters, and in purely individual sports like tennis, track, and boxing, where a player is from matters a lot. So, since starcraft is extremely individual, people from the west, want people from the west on their team.

Average players dont get into code S 8 times. If that is average 99.99% of all sc2 players are terrible.

Obviously pros are held to a different standard, else nearly all of TL is above average, since they are above gold league on ladder. Relative terms are tricky for a reason.
