Hello TL, I thought it was time to check the race distribution of TL, I know it has been done before, and I believe there were predominantly zerg players on TL at that time.
but since then many changes have been made, many players claim to have switched race (I'm referencing switching away from terran since last patch, mainly)
there are people here and there whom claim TL is mostly zerg players, but I believe they reference very old data, and as such I would like to update said data with some more fresh stuff.
I did search for "race distribution" and unless I missed something there should not have been any recent poll made, so I feel this deserves a thread.
so, please vote in the following poll:
Poll: What race is currently your main race?Zerg (731) 31% Protoss (720) 30% Terran (718) 30% Random (206) 9% 2375 total votes Your vote: What race is currently your main race? (Vote): Terran (Vote): Zerg (Vote): Protoss (Vote): Random
edit:
someone requested a poll for activity, so I decided to add another 2 polls, both of which were requested by different people.
notice: if you was placed last season but have yet to play your placement match this season, please vote for the league you were in last season. if you were not placed last season, please vote "placement matches"
Poll: What league are you placed in? (1v1)Master (371) 31% Diamond (322) 27% Platinum (239) 20% Gold (131) 11% Silver (52) 4% placement matches (34) 3% Bronze (30) 2% Grandmaster (27) 2% 1206 total votes Your vote: What league are you placed in? (1v1) (Vote): Grandmaster (Vote): Master (Vote): Diamond (Vote): Platinum (Vote): Gold (Vote): Silver (Vote): Bronze (Vote): placement matches
Poll: How often do you play SC2 melee matches?10-20 games per week (253) 24% less than 5 games per week (240) 23% 5-10 games per week (205) 20% 20-50 games per week (189) 18% never (66) 6% 50-100 games per week (59) 6% 100-200 games per week (18) 2% more than 200 games per week (8) 1% 1038 total votes Your vote: How often do you play SC2 melee matches? Good idea, should be interesting to see what we'll end up with. Played protoss since I started and even when protoss had a hard time in pretty much all the matchups (before emp nerf, when mutas started to become popular again) I never thought about switching races, I don' really see the point as you can win any game with any race on any map if you just outplay your opponnent. I think this will come down to the same distribution as last time though, with mainly zerg/protoss and not that many terrans.
|
What are you going to do with the information knowing TL's race distribution (which will be bias and probably not entirely conclusive given a lot of members aren't signed up/won't vote/might not read the topic)
|
Was Terran since I got the game (around gsl season 2) but switched to Random a month or 2 ago, since I'm just playing for fun, and I love playing all 3 races.
Tho I've thought about just race-picking since (as opposed to the stereo-type) I get cheesed 2-3x more often as random as I ever did as terran, not that I mind because most are protoss going either FFE if i spawn zerg, or doing a cannon rush if I spawn T/P, but I thought it was kinda funny. =P

Be interesting to know overall, even though the information could probly be found on a blizz site, the guys who dont vote/dont read/dont care, should be the same demographic percent-wise as the poll.
|

the poll doesn't actually check the race distribution of all TL, it checks the race distribution of fairly active members in the SC2 forum.
but it can be referenced by anyone as proof of bias. for example, lets say someone makes a thread such as this one:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=319999
then most likely, the poll will end up biased, but then the question is: how biased? and in what races favor? crossreferencing this poll might give a clearer answer to those questions.

I will laugh so hard if protoss is the least represented race.
|
I was Terran in BW and a bit of beta, but I was so intrigued by warp tech that I switched to Protoss. Probably not the best idea, but I love my alien buddies ).
|
Played toss in BW and SC2 beta, switched to Zerg around the time just before the reaper was nerfed. My main reason for switching was that I loved the creep mechanic and I desperately wanted more focus on macro.
|
Many zergs because IdrA, FruitDealer winning GSL and NesTea winning too.

First intuiton after playing the campaign and watching pro replays was Terran. I also played human in Wc3. Tried a bit but it did not feel right, not sure why exactly but mmm just felt so stale. Zerg were vastly different from what I experienced from former RTS games and I also did not like the models that much. Then there was the new, shiny and sparkly kid who could warp in anywhere on the map. It was pylon love at the first warp in. Also the fact so many great players chose it for themselve that I used to follow in the Wc3 Scene.(ToD,Sase,HasuObs,Kiwikaki,Naniwa...etc.)
|
TL always was a zerg venue, so it makes no sense comparing the TL distribution with anything else.
|
Good initiative
I thought there would be more brotoss though.
|
I absolutely love playing zerg in 2v2s and customs, but my main for 1v1 has been Protoss since the beta. I might race switch in HoTS though... who knows!
|
It's funny that there are so few protoss players on TL but the strategy forum has the most [G]uides written for protoss.

Do you think perhaps that is because Toss is the race that is most build order reliant? That is certainly my perspective. Zerg must certainly be more flexible/ As for Terran it seems like there might be too much variety in BO for them to merit simple guides. I'm not sure....

Random, and no I do not cheese.
|
Zerg since release and Zerg in Brood War. I don't think I'll ever change ^^
|
On March 12 2012 18:43 Polygamy wrote: Random, and no I do not cheese.
quite funny i cheese every player that is random on the ladder because i am at a disadvantage vs zerg if i don't go FFE and i am at a disadvantage if i build a 13gate vs someone building a 10gate - so 10gate, 4gate it is. Most of them are also not equally good with all races and therefore it feels often like a waste of time versus randoms.
And yep it is sadly true, most randoms cheese and therefore people like me like to countercheese vs randoms and therefore randoms that didn't cheese in the first place start to counter-counter-cheese.

I saw a thread like this one back a few month. It was like, 35% zerg 32% protoss 28 terran%, something close to that. And the majority of TL were Diamond level zerg player actually.

Meh. Don't take the numbers i gave as fast. It was something close. Just a general trend of having more zerg than protoss and more protoss than terran on the site. And the majority of players was Diamond level, which is pretty logical ( highest level of play who is still pretty large : 18% of player afaik )
And you should probably not compare to a poll who has still less than 500 reply lol

8% main as random, this is kinda unexpected o_O Zerg player here.

Random players piss me off because I don't know whether to FFE vs Zerg or 12/13 gate vs P/T. I just cheese them. If you want to play all races, just switch amongst the other 3 without ruining everyone elses time.

There should be what matchup do you racepick poll, since I main terran on ladder but racepick in zvz. I've had a history of good luck with coinflips in my life.

maybe you should learn to transition from one bo to another instead of qq'ing? If they spent the time to get to the level as you for all 3 races, no reason they shouldn't get that little advantage of you not knowing their race for the first 2 mins.
There's probably a reason why no pros are random... =O

wow, the polls are way more even than I thought they would be.
32% toss 30% zerg 30% terran 8% random

Nobody asked what you think about Random players, sorry. Let's not turn this into another thread where everybody argues about whether the "Random advantage" is fair or not.
Will be interested to see what this poll looks like once the sample size is a bit bigger but it looks pretty even so far.

Zerg player from release, always has been, always will be You'll still have bias in threads, mainly because in a thread dealing with the Protoss state, you'll find mainly Protoss players. Same thing in threads dealing primarily with Zerg or Terran, they'll be more represented posts wise, giving off a false impression that TL is Z-biased or T-biased or whatever.

...or I can just tell people my race at the beginning of the game which I try to do every time (admittedly I do forget sometimes though).

I wonder if there is a thread like this for what league people are in as well... would be interesting. Because TL seems to be either mid-higher leagues or silvers.
Anyway, I play terran, all the way back to beta. I played WarCraft 3 as Orcs, and, because I was terribly noobish, would spam a triple layer of Watch Towers to the entrance of my base, effectively walling if off. I also played Night Elves, a little big better, and enjoyed amassing armies of Archers and those chicks that ride on panthers. So terran was sort of natural for me.
Man I love WarCraft 3, I think I will record some of that. Was such a great game *nostalgia*
|
I don't play ladder, but only team ladder games with my bronze/silver rl friends. And when I do this, I play random.
Furthermore, being random makes watching games much more enjoyable cause you are not overwhelmed by this fucking racial bias. I used to play Terran, so it's still a little bit inside of me, but it's getting less and less.
[X] Random
|
Random only. I feel like it gives me a considerable advantage early game in 1v1
|
Zerg here. Former Protoss.
|
Interesting, seems super even at the moment!

Terran atm, former Protoss, but I'd like to keep playing both races in the future. Glad to see such an even poll. There should be a poll like that more regularly

Not conclusive, maybe, but biased? It's not like terran players refuse to vote on polls and zerg players always lie... In other words, it's not going to be biased.
|
Wow that is impressive how even it is

almost 900 votes in and its almost perfectly even!

You should add a poll for how active players are. Player may say they they main a certain race, but only play twice a month.

poll added, but there is no real way of isolating activity by race.
but more statistics are better I guess.

terran 50-100 games a week master league, a suspiciously high percentage of master leagueers though
|
only 34 votes so far (@what league are you placed in) that's why it's not really clear yet, but I believe the highest percentage will be master, even with more votes.
Zerg ftw !

If most ppl on here would vote it wouldnt be masters; although this community is kinda advanced masters is still only 2% of the playerbase. The fact, that most people who post here and vote are confident in their ability and therefore we get more masters % than there really are in this community.

Not sure how reliable the poll is. TL polls have a strange tendency to end up perfectly even when it's not a landslide victory for either side. I'm pretty sure that there is a large group of people who votes to keep the poll as even as possible. A blind poll would be much better in this case (actually, it's better in pretty much every case as it prevents the preliminary results from biasing later voters).

how does one make a blind poll?

Oh interesting poll Was not sure what to answer for the last question, i only play team games (more then 50 a week) and never 1 vs 1 so kept this question open.
Maybe interesting idea to add a few questions about team games to the poll maybe sub-devide the last question in team games a week and 1 vs 1 games a week or add a question if you mostly play team games or 1 vs 1 personally i do feel there is a huge part of the sc players base that mostly play team games (maybe even up to 30%+?)though they might not neccesarly visit this forum. It would be interesting to get some numbers on this
|
Played Protoss until the start of season 3 (masters league), and decided that Terran suited my strengths better, so switched to it. Played Terran ever since, and for me it's the coolest, greatest race
|
I played Terran in Brood War, then StarCraft 2 was released.
In season 1 I just couldn't make up my mind in what race to choose, I went through many race switches until I decided Protoss is the most enjoyable. I soon lost interest in StarCraft 2 after all these race changes, I think I made myself lose interest in the game. I played shooters for a while and skipped seasons 2 to 5 and I rediscovered SC again in late season 6, I played Protoss for a couple of games and I felt it just didn't feel right. I needed to either play Zerg or Terran, if I didn't choose a race, I would never stop switching. So I went back to Terran and I hope I stick with it.

terran->protoss->random
10-20 games per week

cool pool! good to see so many random players out there used to main terran myself but then i stopped playing for school for a while and when im back everything just changed so much so i started playing random... quite fun! its cool to play different strats and have a good laugh at the weird stuff that happens

Zerg, Diamond, less than 5 laddergames/week

33% seems wishful thinking lol, I assume a lot of people who rarely play think they should have the capacity to hit Masters

Terani hwaiting!

dat race poll o.O
For some time I've been thinking master league wasn't as exclusive as it used to be. More and more people get promoted and less and less of the lower-league-players quit. However, I realize TL doesn't translate directly since it's mostly for the most dedicated players/community followers.
|
Been play Terran since 1998 . But I haven't played much SC2 in the last 5 months, still play 10-20 games per season and stay at diamond since there is no master. I just got bored with SC2, will comeback hardcore once HoTS goes gold.
|
Zerg masters, 5-10 games a week.
|
Main with terran, joke around with protoss, both masters eu (actually higher with P) Less than 5 a week on average, i guess (usually like 1 week of 5 games a day, then a month without playing)

I wasn't sure what race to vote. I used to play terran, but am in the process of attempting to switch to Protoss.

When I played Protoss, I found that a good build order is a very important thing to have going into the game. Playing Terran now, I feel like build orders are in general simpler (because we don't indicate every single unit that comes out of the gateway for the first 6 minutes :D), and more adaptable. PvP is very build order reliant, while TvT is maybe the least non Zerg build reliant matchup. PvZ is mostly "FFE into a cool and precise build that accomplishes some goal or hit a timing", TvZ is mostly "take map control with hellions, and try to deny bases, defend harass, keep up macroing, until you think you can finish Zerg with a big push" TvP is a bit of the same for both races, with plenty of all ins to defend, and some clear mid-to-late game compositions, and it comes down to micro.
Edit: And that may be a reason to the relative success of the race on the ladder. You follow a build order found on TL, your chances of winning the game increase to 55% compared to your opponent who doesn't have that supply list to rely on :D I at least know that when I was Protoss, I was very proud of my build orders and shit, which, now that I think about it, is quite dumb, because there is little to no glory in following a supply list.
|
Interesting results so far, very even.
TL no imba!
|
Protoss Master in the beginning, switched to Terran and got High Master/GM then Terran became unplayable and switched to Zerg which I'm currently in Master but I will quit SC2 for the time being at least until Protoss gets fixed.

Played T since the beta, then switched to Z because T was OP that that time.
Now switched back to T from Z because Z is op this time around.

There may not be casual observers on TL or in this case ones that actually responded to the pool - there are plenty of people who watch StarCraft that do not come here. Also, there's no need to be so aggressive towards these suggestions since just by being on TL you've pretty much moved out of the casual zone. For instance, the single player campaign has had less than 1% of the global community complete the game on Insane difficulty, yet for the majority of TL'ers, that is a rather simple task. When you're looking at a community that can easily do what more than 99% of the global community can not, I would say we're quite removed from the term "causal".

I don't think this will give a accurate race representation across all the leagues? Seems like when one third of the ppl responding are masters, then it's bias towards the higher leagues. Same for BW, I haven't touched BW in years but I'm in the BW forums for the tournaments/community etc.
There's a lot more to TL than just BW/SC2/Whatever players, there's a huge community. This is a news site as well, don't forget. :D

I hope you're not serious

I find it hard to believe there are more masters than there are any other league according to the poll.
At any rate, Terran in Platinum. Rarely play because of wrist injury and ladder anxiety.

what are melee matches?
thank you

Torenhire != Torte de Lini, unless he spends even more time posting than I thought o_O

I would think the higher the league you are, the more likley you would visit TL.

I have ladder nerves, but I can account for at least 3,200 games played in total since release :B

Interesting how so far it's an extremely even split
|
weird because there's way less terrans on ladder compared to the other races.

Ya but I consider this poll of league about as honest as the ones you see in the 1v1 obs ums or when you ask pirates how many of them buy the stuff they pirate if its good. Polls like these are inherently going to draw people to lie about them especially considering that a majority of the players of sc2 are gold or lower.

Some people will lie, yes, but I can bet you that a majority of the gold and lower players don't even know what teamliquid is.

But you have to consider that anyone who spends time reading teamliquid probably got out of bronze / lower leagues fairly quickly...

Think people are just voting to keep it even. Feels like Zerg is the most played, with Protoss not far behind, Terrans are getting scarce these days.
|
The poll doest take into account number of games played per race, for example, I voted Terran, masters yet I haven't played heavily for months (150+ games a season til end of season 5 -> less then 10 games for season 6)
I am sceptical of people lying about their race, why bother theres really little motive to do so.
