However, I will probably pay $5 for the online package and wish IPL the best of luck!

I hope that they have some wicked discount. I stayed at the flamingo for $55/night (or cheaper?) one time in Vegas. So just FYI to other people that there other hotels (like almost next door lol) that are cheaper...but maybe won't be as nice.

Vegas hotels are ridiculously expensive, and there is a very small SC2 demographic there. I don't really expect a huge audience, but who knows. Maybe the GSL collaboration (and UNLV nerds) can turn this into a success. However, they could have easily held this event in NYC, LA, or many other major cities with much higher SC2 loving population and cheaper hotels. Seems like bad business, but I guess IGN has money to spare. Vegas is actually known as a huge convention center city. The venues and flights at Vegas during this time of year are actually not that expensive at all. Second, Vegas is within driving distance of many major cities (less than a 4.5 hour drive from SoCal). As for Boss, he is definitely an industry insider, but he still is just one opinion. But I am a bit doubtful that doing an event the size of IPL in NYC could be less expensive than Vegas.

Some say its a little over the top, but we built this Moon Base for ESPORTS. NASA had nothing better to do, so we gave them all free Skyrim Collectors Editions in exchange for said Moon Base.

Even then, it would have to be far out, so the choice of such a city is led ad absurdum. LV being a major convention city (CES anyone?) brings both the available real estate as well as lodging and connectivity.

But that (a 24hr drive) is my limit. I wouldn't drive to CA or such. And I can get my friends to go with me to Las Vegas who wouldn't go with me to other places. I don't have any friends who play StarCraft.

You can say that your event is in NYC but actually have the convention space somewhere in New Jersey or the out skirts of the city. The thing that would make it cheaper is the wider range of hotels available, taxes, and cheaper airfare. He could still be wrong, but there are definitely ways to have a "cheap" convention in NYC area.

If it is for the NYC "tag" alone, then I don't know if it would be worth it at all. You could be doing one in Denver, or anywhere. Cheaper is always possible.
