Should go without saying, but don't link restreams here either.

I gotta say I am really disappointed. I was looking forward to MLG as it was awesome last season. So awesome I signed up for a silver membership with the intention of cancelling it later but decided to keep it going as I thought it was well worth it. However, $20 a pop? You have got to be kidding me... Sorry MLG, I guess I'll be downloading the VODs via torrent this season.
Or someone else will.

I won't be buying

I'm rather sure it's been mentioned a dozen or so times in this thread already, but the quality of MLG streams in the past has been less than sufficient for it's viewer base. Now they want us to pay a premium based solely on their word, and well, that dog won't hunt, Monsignor. While I'm quite for supporting eSports financially by purchasing streams, $20 is nothing to sneeze at for a mere 20 hours of game play. Hell, I pay $20 to GOM for the GSL and that's for 4-5 hours a few nights a week, for a few MONTHS, and I STILL feel that's way too much.

MLG is trying to monetize StarCraft II and lead the way for American tournaments without having yet proven itself of being a reliable medium. From a financial sense, it just doesn't seem advantageous to me as a paying customer.

CEO of EG states his opinion on the matter and what should be done/what we as viewers should do.

Read it guys, it's very well done

Very bad decision by the MLG... I got a <1k dsl connection and i so a free low quality stream is the only option for me. Won't buy anything and miss all the awesome games.

Get a few friends, throw some money together, pay for it, watch a ton of starcraft, have fun. Pretty simple.

It's not that much. Also this will be help them pay for paying for everything for the players.

Having friends is not the same as "having friends who like Starcraft and want to watch it". This argument is just silly. You can say it for everything: Too expansive, well, share it with friends!

So they have no friends that would lend them a few bucks either?

Poor choice of friends.

So, your suggesting he begs for money off his friends rather than watching some free alternatives or skipping the event?

Who said anything about begging? I'm pointing out how ridiculous the disgust at $20 is. It's not unobtainable. Yes there is an alternative of Assembly, but lets assume this person would prefer watching players like Mvp and Nestea like I would. You should be able to ask a few friends for a few bucks that you can pay off on later dates because you're their friends and it's only $5 max. I'm sure you could easily find 5 people willing to part $3 and pay the other $5 yourself.

It's so easy to get $20. It's not hard at all. I could get $20 in a day easy just by seeing if anyone had $1.

I'm saying don't give up cause you see $20 and go "That's ridiculous" when you look at all it's paying for, including getting the players there. If you have 10 friends, I'm sure $2 is something they can part with and not care about. All depends on how good of a friend you are to them though and how good of a friend they are.

yeah, im sure they will keep you forever as a friend when every time a major SC2 touney is, you beg them for money like a drug addict.

ITS NOT ABOUT GETTING TOGETHER 20 dollars.

its about geeting together 20 bucks for a 3 day Sc2 tournament, lol.

I mentioned it earlier, and am actually looking into what legal recourse I have right now. This is a classic example of bait and switch. We were promised X, paid for X, and now we are going to be given Y, which is clearly less content.

I will certainly never buy anything from MLG again. I am contacting America Express and disputing the charge that MLG put on my card.

You could request a refund for above stated reason. Since the season hasn't started (no consumption so no prorating) and the content is not what was promised I would think they would be obligated to refund anyone's subscription money in full.

First, I really hope you don't choose friends based on their ability to loan you money.
Second, borrowing for entertainment is usually a bad idea.
Third, no one is questioning why mlg want's money (original quoted post).

First, I choose friends based on personality.
Second, borrowing $2-$3 from a few friends isn't going to do anything terrible for one weekend every few months.
Third, they have to pay for the players getting there free of charge don't they?

Implying that all major tournaments are all $20. Good job there bud. GOM has PPV events and that's about it from off the top of my head.

You can get $20 from strangers too by the way. "Hey does anyone have a buck?" then move to the next area and repeat. Just gotta put effort in it.

I think we should support MLG's efforts in doing this. I see it as a way to grow esports and could really take SC to the next level. If we want nice things we have to put into it. $20 isn't anymore then a lot of us pay to go to the movies or buy a CD. I hope more people can see the positives that this new PPV option could bring to our community.

I think that I would be a lot more okay with giving MLG $20 at least once if Sundance wasn't acting so sensitive about this whole thing on Twitter. It makes me feel like he didn't see this kind of backlash coming, which really seems like it should have been obvious.

I did read the post, but I don't really understand how this differs from other MLG events (other than no open bracket and other little details like that). It just seems strange to have the regular circuit, and then have this on the side for a large amount of money per person. Why not just bump the price of gold up a bit and have it as part of the regular circuit.

Anyway, going back to it not being very different from their main circuit tournaments... I don't see how they expect this to be successful. I imagine most people will simply pass on it and watch the vods later if they really want to. I feel that if they do want to pull something like this off they should try to be unique and do something like a WCG style tournament where people represent countries from around the world. If it is essentially another MLG tournamet, why spend so much for one weekend where people will get a few hours of entertainment? I'm honestly asking... maybe there is some reason.

In the end, I'm not really bothered by the situation despite being a gold MLG member, but I just don't understand the mentality behind many of these decisions. I think people would have been happy to see even more live events for the year, and having the gold price go up a noticeable amount... though 20 dollars extra per event is quite steep. Is this mainly to test the viability of charging PPV for an entire event? Once again, I just can't see this being successful.

I'm not at all concerned with paying for it. Especially considering I'll be hosting a BarCraft for it. I don't mind paying a bit extra for awesome content and the privilege to view it live with 200+ other sc2 fans in the local scene.

There's no way they can hope to continue to grow and produce good stuff if they don't ask for money to see it live. You will have the option of viewing for free a week after the fact... but who wants that?

You may want to confirm that you are allowed to stream it to a crowd... in most cases of ppv.. public establishments must pay a higher fee to stream the event to the public.

Opps.. I hope I did not remind MLG of that option. Sorry bro.

MLG said that they wanted people to go to Barcrafts if they didn't want to pay for the service up front on their own...>_>

Just because you may not agree with their pricing structure, doesn't mean you should just start badmouthing them.

I'm not going to get this thinger, but in my eyes, if everything I saw for free last year is still viewable for free then I don't give a shit. And based on what they're saying that is indeed the case.

I was not badmouthing MLG.. i was responding to a comment about the 'barcrafts' streaming the ppv. In most cases for ppv events.. public establishments are charge a very high fee to stream ppv events to the public.. thats why they often times charge a cover fee to patrons. I was just pointing that out to the guy talking about holding a barcraft for it.

I think MLG is overlooking a crucial point: There are viewers from all over the world. For example in Germany (where I live) PPV is not popular at all. The one big PPV channel has been suffering for many years now, even switching its name trying to get more viewers.
In the US PPV is the standard and people are more open to pay for content on TV. This might include many viewers of MLG but I'm quite positive that a lot of viewers also come from other countries, where they are just not willing to pay, just because they aren't used to it.

I personally won't pay.

I don't get what's the big deal about spending $20 for MLG. It's cheaper than actually attending the event, and you're guaranteed to have a chair if you're watching from home.
