Due to the recent spoilings of the Blizzard Cup in the SC2 General section of this forum, I've decided to write a Google Chrome Extension that hides topics/news posts that would spoil the results.
What it does? It is a pretty simple extension. All it does is hide the news on the front page and sidebar, and all topics that contain the text [Spoiler] in the title. It also hides said topics from the sidebar aswell.
How can I install it? Simply go to: http://www.4shared.com/file/8eCaOb-k/SpoilerHider.html using Google Chrome, it will ask if you want to install the extension, just click yes.
How do I turn it off once I have finished watching the matches? Click the wrench in the top right corner of Chrome, go to "Tools" -> "Extensions" and uncheck the "Enabled" checkbox beside the Extension.
If you have any questions/comments/suggestions, feel free to leave them in this topic, or send me a PM.

Sweet! now I won't get trolled anymore by coming on the first page and see those ever so tempting posts.

It's as if people come here just so they can complain about being spoiled. Why would anybody come here before watching the games if they don't want it to be ruined?
Nice of you to write this but it's sad that you felt the need to in the first place

Why? Nobody's forcing anybody to visit TL before watching games. It's like going to NHL.com or NFL.com before you saw a game, seeing the score and then freaking out about spoilers.
Either watch the games first, or deal with it. I don't get why spoilers are such a big deal, anyways. I don't care if I know the result of a sports game, or SC2 match. I'll still watch it and get the same amount of enjoyment out of it.

it already is. doesn't stop people from doing it, though, just punishes them when they do.

Yea but. Teamliquid is my home page. If I am not playing sc2 I am browsing through topics and honestly its my own fault if i read a spoiler. At the same time its always nice for people to use "spoiler tags" for at least a day after the event, because not all of us are lucky enough to be in the right time zone for events or have work or other responsibilities that prevent us from watching LIVE. That doesn't mean we are not dedicated its just how it works out.

Rofl what a sad addon, seriously if you don't want spoilers don't go on SC2 related sites.

You can't compare them in a vaccuum, but lets not get off topic. This seems like a useful extension but like what one guy said, most people just say "Player X won GSL, next Bonjwa!1?!!!1"

its called courtesy. NHL or NFL games dont air in the middle of the night/odd hours, the vast majority of people are UNABLE to watch them live, and so must watch vods. this is how we have been doing things for YEARS.

Cool OP, although I watch most of the matches live it's nice to see someone is looking out for the minority (the one's complaining about spoilers ofc).

Perhaps the TL staff should inform people to put such a tag in their title now, and not have to worry about using an ambiguous title, while urging everyone to use this extension? I can see that as a possible solution to this spoil/spoiler debate xD

On one hand, this will be a great extension to suggest to people who bitch about being spoiled on tl. On the other hand, people who come to tl and complain about being spoiled don't really deserve any sympathy, and I'm not prepared to bitch at someone who makes a spoilerish topic without [spoiler] all over it
|
If you don't want to be spoiled why are you on this website in the first place? Go watch the VODs beforehand. Simple as that...

there are other things to do on this website than to look up results, and who are you to say in what order they have to do things?
TL rules say you should not spoil, simple as that.

This is cool, people will doubtless find it useful, but I can't help but think this is kind of a bit like people building a bunker in their backyard and stocking up on canned food in preparation for an upcoming apocalypse.

You're basically saying that it's ok for people who spoil to keep breaking rules.

TeamLiquid is not just a news website, it is also a community of people who discuss the game, and not just tournament results. In my opinion, news should be kept to the News section. If you want to post your own little writeup about a tournament, there is no reason at all you shouldn't include [Spoiler] in the title if it contains spoilers.

You have got to be kidding me about this Spoiler hoopla, this is RIDICULOUS children, get over it, you're going to find out anyway, these events that have winners are BIG NEWS let it be big news instead of a kept secret until you and you alone watch it, such selfish bull crap. Get over yourselves.

That's awesome. I had always hoped there might be a spoiler tag type thing added to other parts of the site. And here you just take it all into your own hands .
As for those of you who seem offended by this idea, I'd like to remind you that most people can't watch international broadcasts live and sometimes they can't even watch them fully by the next day. TL can be a big part of their internet browsing and they may love to use it for all kinds of things not related to some specific tournament. A tool like this will allow these people to have more enjoyment in watching their favorite tournaments, and still be able to enjoy browsing TL. And I don't think the addition of [SPOILER] in thread titles will really be too damaging to anyone.
Thanks for the tool.

The problem with people like you is that you're being selfish, sure you can't watch it and I understand that, but hey I cannot catch every event either. You and I both know events are worldwide, and in different time-zones you're not gonna catch every single one, I sure as heck don't and can't. For the greater good of e-Sports, there needs to be excitement and clamor when a great even takes place, but because kids like you are so selfish and don't wanna "spoil" your OWN fun, you have to make everything so downplayed and hidden. This is my opinion, but I truly believe I've nailed it on the bud. I really hope this nonsense ends one day, not for myself, but for e-SPORTS to prosper and become truly glorified. It's great now sure, but it could be greater, if you can't sacrifice your own fun for the greater good well then, selfishness will live on cause nerds can't take one for the team.

Then this addon would be even better for everyone! People that have no problem being spoiled just don't use it and a simple spoiler tag in front of threads won't hurt anyone. And people like me who like visiting TL for the general forum, finding vods etc. and don't want to get spoiled could use stuff like this addon to circumvent it.
@OP: Maybe you could add the fanclub section to it as well, it happened to me a lot that I was spoilered through that because the winner's fanclub normally stays on top of the list for some time. Also, would it be possible to make a firefox addon (if you can't or don't want to do it, maybe someone else could?), because this is pure genius and I would love to use it as well
|
I appreciate the effort and the potential for less people whining about having results spoiled.
But on the other hand, it's their own damn fault for going to an SC2 community website and discussion forum before watching the games.
I consider it 100% the responsibility of the person who doesn't want the results spoiled for them to take all necessary actions to avoid stumbling across spoilers. Going on to a SC2 forum and blaming the OP that spoils the results, just because it's against the rules, is passing the buck. You should have known better. People break the rules all the time, and expecting punishment to work as a deterrent is really naive.

You really haven't nailed it. This website is much more than a SC2 related site. If you scroll farther down the left side you'll see a bunch of subforums unrelated to SC2 and even without scrolling down there is a general section. It's those forums that attract people to this website who also don't want events spoiled for them. Also having a full-time job and a family also prevents people from watching the full match at the broadcasted time so they rely on VODs. It's a lot easier to browse the forums for 5 minutes than it is to watch the GSL finals that go to game 7 in 5 minutes so they may need to wait up to a week to watch the games. You have to look at it from other people's perspective.
If this website was only SC2 and nothing else than you may have a point but it's really so much more and that's why we have spoilers.

This is kinda nice. Didn't think someone would go all the way to develop such a tool though. Kudos XD

Likewise, a newspaper is so much more than Sports. Yet, the day after an important game I missed and want to watch later, I know enough to stay away from newspapers until I get the time to watch the game myself. I'd likewise stay away from any bars, which are about so much more than just Sports, but incredibly likely to spoil the game. I'd also avoid getting into conversations with people I know are likely to bring up the game in casual conversation.
If your ability to watch the game is so limited that you can't spend a day or two avoiding the most likely spoiler-zones, then it's incredibly unrealistic to expect that you'll be able to watch a spoiler-free match.

It's so easy to be hypocritical. You too are being selfish by wanting to spoil the results of games other people haven't seen. Making people not want to watch games they have missed because they've been spoiled is hurting esports just as much as "downplaying the excitement."
It's not hard to put spoiler tags in thread titles/thread content, and it doesn't do anything to "hurt esports" by having those seven extra letters. What it does do, however, is show respect to other people who enjoy watching the games as much as you do.
|
Okay, somebody please explain to me why it so bad to be spoiled? I want to legitimately understand why it is so infuriating as I am on the other side of this fence... I look at the results of every series I am going to watch to make sure it is worth watching in the first place. Not once has a thread angered me because I saw a winner, it simply made me curious as the overall results (I don't look at comments about the games) and if it wasn't a complete demolishing of the other player I will watch it. This is just my outlook, but I would like to know the other side...
|
Yes, this is the correct solution. SC2 news sites can talk about SC2 news and people that get upset over this (but still visit anyway) can download an add-on to remedy their peculiar requirements for a SC2 news and discussion site.
|
How does this change anything? All it does is hide the topics that are already hiding the winner in the title.

I keep reading this title as Spider Hider -_-
But yea, this is a good idea, but most of the spoilers come from the actual title itself. I'm sure people who don't want things spoiled wouldn't click a title with [Spoilers] in it anyways.
