Artosis and Tasteless love to promote SC2, and last night during the GSL finals it worked. GSL was trending worldwide for hours on twitter and someone wrote an interesting article on how it works and why it's important.

Never underestimate the power of an influental person. When Tasteless & Artosis says you should hashtag #GSL – people get to the computer and actually do it.
Other communities helps a lot. People during this final gathered on Reddit and TeamLiquid – together people tweeted like crazy.
Big conferences and events should learn more about how this actually works – maybe even have a special tag for the final day/event.
This is great and really spreads interest in the game. I myself got interested in SC2 because someone made a GSL LR thread on a very active gaming board a year ago. I think all casters should try this to some degree. Promoting Starcraft is always good.
So when Tastosis says "Spread the word! Hashtag GSL! Don't just go to Reddit and TL, tell people who don't know about Starcraft!", it really does work and it is one of the reasons why Starcraft 2 is so popular internationally.

Yea more people need to know this sport is freaking awesome. Finally the game is getting so big and finals so hyped that people who watch it are like: oh man if this many people are this hyped theres gotta be something to it. GOGGOOGOGOGGO SC2

That article didn't tell me anything about why "it's important". I've never seen the top 10 trending list except when someone explicitly showed it to me.
Do people click on these trending topics and get informed? I don't get how appearing on that list is a big deal or anything.
The only actual stat I could get out of that article was that #GSL was twittered 4500 times.

I click occasionally on trending topics just to see what is going on. It makes GSL and SC2 more visible to those outside the community.

It's less the effect of Tastosis and more the effect of the games due to the repeatedly calls for hashtagging by Tastosis not usually succeeding in getting it trending.

Well, a trending topic itself is nothing special, but it does mean that a significant number of people are tweeting about that topic which means even more will be exposed to it, so if GSL is constantly trending twitter accounts are constantly increasing the exposure of starcraft 2 to the world.
We get excited when GSL is trending not for the status of trending itself, but for what it means!

Even if it's kind of cool, I doubt it plays a large part. For example, I have no thoughts about looking up who Daniela Romo is, even though she was apparently trending...

Wow i'm surprised that only 1300 tweets in one hour causes a worldwide trend... if you get a large portion of every audience watching any live event it seems you could get a worldwide trend.... that is kind of inspiring! We should tweet more!

Does this really matter? Does anybody actually look to see what Gaudinot or #OMELHORDAMESADA is if it's trending on Twitter? Everytime I open Twitter the worldwide trending topics are something stupid like #BILIEBERSUNITE or #reasonswhyimissu.
