Also known as (Z)maRie, she was the second best female Starcraft progamer behind (T)ToSsGirL, playing for the KOR/Sparkyz pro team. After retiring from 'competitive' play, she remained in the scene, hosting various shows on OGN.

She will attempt to qualify for Code A next season.

Foreigners have been replaced by girls T___T They realized that foreigners won't do any good with their code A invites so they might as well give them out to Korean girls instead, it's only a matter of time...

lol, well if she's picked up by oGs then she must be good!

(the lol was at her Age)

If this (maRie (Sc2 ranks)) is her then she's pretty good, mid-high master in Korea is no small feat. Though not enough to qualify for Code A

so, who will be the first to organise a showmatch between JongMi and Aphrodite? It's kind of interesting to see female progamers becoming "trendy" during the last few days. I'm sure she will be able to hold her own if she makes it into code A, but I'm really curious about how far she will go in the long run. Also, that Mom's Touch patch just got a whole new meaning lol.

This is smart by Korean teams.

Zowie and other sponsors are planning on running more high-priced female tournaments. Winning a female tournament with a $5,000 prize is the same as one of your male members winning MLG. Getting a female and training her to battle the other females, having a leg up on most, is a great idea.

Huh, this looks interesting. I remember her being on the roster of that random LG Chinese SC2 tournament several months back. Apparently, she was supposed to play in few showmatches, possibly with Tossgirl, but there was some confusion with Tossgirl being unable to play due to her coach's demands or something. I wish I could find some vods of those showmatches, if they were actually played, but there is so little info about that tournament.

Should be interesting to see how (Z)maRie does in SC2 considering that she is 30+ and female. I really hope she can put out some decent results, and considering that oGs is a pretty good team, she is at least in a great training environment.

Kick ass to see some more girl gamers join pro teams - The latest 2 pickups seems to have been somewhat serious, and not the PR-stunt that I got the feeling of, when reading about Slayers newest addition

Also - Foreign SC2 girls: Join some established teams and put yourself out there.. The ones of you that are truely good, seem to hide away somewhat, from the rest of the scene

SC2 is getting all the ladies now. Hopefully she can qualify for Code A and surprise a lot of people.

Good on oGs picking up an established female player, and not a ZvG specialist.

I would be really happy if she is going to be more than a barbie doll, that you put on the bench at GSTL to show everyone, that you have a girl in your team, like Slayers Eve. If she makes in far in the qualifiers i would be welcomly suprised. To see a female progamer being picked up due to her skill would be really great news. I've not seen her play, so let's see.....

EDIT: checked her profil, well she's over 30, so this might be a serious aquirement for oGs. Wish her the best.

Jangb- oh T.t

Well entertaining to have another toss girl.

I hope she can play and isn't just a gimmick. (That said the mechanics of sc2 should give all of these girls a better chance at being much more competitive)

She was probably about as good as most of the current SC2 'pros' were during her active time (ie Killer, Puma, MC, Nestea, etc), with exception of MVP and fOrGG.

edit: that said she stopped playing 'seriously' quite a while ago, so who knows how this will go. If she was playing SC2 since release, I'd imagine she can make it to Code A at least.

It'd be awesome to see more female gamers getting into RTS and StarCraft specifically. Maybe have some females to look up to for inspiration will be helpful.

You see a ton of female gamers in LoL and other games/genres, even FPS... RTS seems to be one area that is still very very male biased.

An increasing number of women playing the game can only be a good thing. Kudos to her. I'd be eager to see Tossgirl join the scene as well; she ought to place at least high in Code A if not in Code S. We've seen what other Korean B-team BW players can do, right?

I wish her the very best of luck. I think it is great that girls are being accepted into the competitive gaming community. I think e-sports are one of the few competitive scenes where your sex doesn't matter, at least not to the same degree as say, American football. Girls can certainly play on par to any guy out there. What makes you a tip-top player is your dedication to the game and your passion or the competitive atmosphere.

I think she'll get a lot better with support from the oGs team, and I look forward to seeing whether or not she has what it takes to get into Code A soon.

I guess TL's and the SC community of viciously defending females in the scene payed off. While I think the Slayers_Eve fanclub was a bit ridiculous, Im really glad that females with skill are getting attention and going to compete. This and Aphrodite will really help legitimize females in esports. Awesome job community!

Finally a decent female player, that can actually compete with male players.

hopefully this will bring the bar up on team recruiting females, from "winning a female only tournament", to "getting into Code A against the best players"

Pretty cool to see more females. It would be nice to see more of them competing, or maybe 1 relatively big female only tournament a year by the GSL (wouldn't have to be for a large prize though), though I know that would piss plenty of people off.

What makes it feel worse that it is a woman than a man? SC isn't really physical so I don't see why you think that's substantial, unless you think women are dumber than men, or worse at moving their fingers and looking at a screen.

This is very interesting. I really hope that this is a sign that the walls are breaking down and that female gamers will be considered seriously as pro players who can contribute to their teams. I don't know if SlayerS can be considered the catalyst to this, given they were the very first team in Korea to add a female player, but I think it certainly helped. Some people might say that Eve is a stunt, and that might be true, but I think at the end of the day it gave a lot of the other teams something to think about.

if broodwar's supported anything in the last 10+ years, it's certainly the notion that they don't have as much potential.. tossgirl, being the best female bw gamer had little achievements to show for it in real competition

Older than BoxeR and White-Ra! Interesting! Nice to see more girls play the game more! Good luck!
With an average game length of 7m36s over his 6 games in GSL3, this is a no-brainer. BitByBit pulls more SCVs than yo momma at a club on Mar Sara. ♞

Pretty cool, hope she does well.
But yeah being a Korean gamer is very imba. If you're a non-korean gamer you have to balance your game playing with earning money and your real life. If you're Korean you just sit around playing games all day eating 2 cent ramyun and becoming gosu.

I looked her up and smack dab in the middle of a Google images page with a bunch of pictures of her was probably one of creepiest pictures of Idra I've seen staring off to the side at the next image. And then down one row was a picture from the thread of BW players photoshopped onto a female bodies.

It'll be interesting to see how JongMi does. It sounds like she was a fairly decent BW player.

If she lives in the team house, I feel like that would suck beyond all belief. Being the only girl in a house full of guys where privacy is hard to come by isn't really ideal. Still, the practice would be beyond beneficial. I still hope she gets to live in her own place or something.

I very highly doubt that she practices in the team house, since she would be the only woman & 31 years old.
She'll practice at home as many players do.

i find it much easier to explain their "fall out of their prime" as due to increased competition and decreased motivation rather than some direct effect of their age to be honest.

Agree. There is no inherent biological advantage for males in gaming. Cultural and societal pressures make it seem like girls are "worse" than guys at games because so few of them play SC let alone pursue pro-gaming. The cold hard fact is she is high masters in Korea, something many foreigner pros would struggle to attain. It's pretty exciting to see SC2 generating a healthy female player base.

This is SO awesome! Female sc2 pro gaming is finally starting to grow. I definitely think Divina helped encouraging that growth a lot. Even those who've criticized Divina for doing female only tournament, in a game that doesn't really favour males in any biological manner, must now admit it was needed.

That would actually hold true in a 1998 game. But SC2 is different. There is a 2010 WCG video of a white man (infernal) frantically trying to keep up with his opponent until he eventually cracks under pressure. His opponent is all relaxed ( most likely looked like a joke to him ) and is so much ahead of him in expansions within 10minutes of the game.

Are you serious? Does gaming not require reflexes, focused vision as opposed to peripheral vision, killer instinct, all systemically evolved into the male genome and out of the female genome in favor of other traits which I don't want to go into here, over millions of years?

What's with all the women joining pro gaming teams just now?

Certainly took a while for it to progress to this. Hopefully they can produce.

On second thought, I wouldn't be surprised to see them trying to set up another female league with mixed results. -_-

If this (maRie (Sc2 ranks)) is her then she's pretty good, mid-high master in Korea is no small feat. Though not enough to qualify for Code A

FRom personal experience, her rank is about equal to top 100 in masters (top 300 in NA overall). Decent, probably 12 or so months before she can seriously contend for Code A.

That's awesome if somewhat surprising.

So many girls in Korean pro teams now, Eve, Aphrodite, Marie, Alicia, Tiffany. Oh wait. (What is it with effeminate names at SlayerS?)

while i do agree this is an awesome move, i don't know why more females aren't taking the opportunity to do this. i definitely think there's far more benefit of being a female in any e-sports scene, i mean look at the slayer's eve fan club, no one has even seen her play and yet she already has one. the publicity that females get will definitely generate them great sponsors and will somewhat be an advantage so if you're a female and you're on the fence, you should definitely try. the bar is definitely set lower in terms of standards due to the lack of them. i hope no one takes this post as being sexist but rather how the situation is currently atm.

Although JongMi could be the exception..

The same way foreigners would never beat Koreans at any legitimate tournament, right? I mean that was the universal truth a few months ago.

Stop spouting bullshit.

GL to her!

Are you serious? Does gaming not require reflexes, focused vision as opposed to peripheral vision, killer instinct, all systemically evolved into the male genome and out of the female genome in favor of other traits which I don't want to go into here, over millions of years?

Biology <> Preconceptions. Get over it.

Please explain the relationship of "focused vision" and "killer instinct" to starcraft skill.

Those have everything to do with Starcraft.

That's an interesting twist. Previous experience as a pro + age will probably be a boon and she'll do a lot better than people expect. Not expecting a code A qualifcation any time soon, but perhaps she will beat some well-known players in code b.

I very highly doubt that she practices in the team house, since she would be the only woman & 31 years old.
She'll practice at home as many players do.

Iirc, one of the reasons Zenio left OGS was because it is a requirement to train in the house UNLESS you have a good reason like studying for school/university like Nada.

i wonder if one of the reasons why she decided to come back to progaming is because sc2 has shown that older players can still dominate unlike in BW

if so, her passion must be quite strong so we can probably expect her in Code A sometime Though a lot of the Code S/A players got knocked down... lol (like hongun, ensnare, etc.)

If you saw the code B tourny then pretty much everyone notable got back into GSL, the rest are no namers that don't seem to be good

Perhaps; however, she was nothing special in BW either. It really is going to come down to dedication and commitment on her part. I have yet to see a women player truly shine. I'm still looking for a mechanically strong one at that.

A bit random but funny story I remember from when I was watching her in that variety show ogn where the guest/s ride a car and get filmed. Well Jongmi and Tossgirl were the guests one episode and one of the questions was if there were any incidents that occurred while both lived in the progaming houses. Tossgirl who lived a lot longer than Jongmi said not much happened and they were very polite to her and actually really didnt approach her. For Jongmi who only stayed a week and then left because she said her personality couldn't handle it said during her 1 week lots of funny things happened. Like when she was living there Zeus she said would walk around in his boxers all day. One of the biggest incidents she said that occurred was while she was living there, she was using someone's computer there and when she went to the history of the browser it was all filled with porn sites lol. She never mentioned who it was but she hinted it was a terran who was still on the team still.

While I think we all admit that she is probably gonna have a hard time qualifying for Code A, this is infinitely more legit than most of what we've seen so far from the female "pros".

I agree. I'm glad to see a team sign a female player as an actual player, and not just a publicity thing like SlayerS did with Eve.

So excited about all the female players getting involved in professional sc2! Hopefully lots of hard work and practicing with her team can get her into Code A. Good luck to her!

Also, I think as more women get involved in sc2 at the professional level they will inspire more and more women to really buckle down and work to become pro gamers themselves. Heck, even just seeing the recent influx of female recruits was enough to get me to start up sc2 and do a few ladder matches even though I haven't played in months and usually just love to watch. It may be a few years until we see significant numbers of progaming women competing at the same level as male pro gamers but I think it will happen eventually.

Always good to see more skilled women players getting a chance. I just hope this trend is the trend that continues, and deserving females in the community get more opportunities.

I hope these women are good enough. It's nice that some pro teams have female members now but I think the only thing that can really make an impact is if one of them actually made it through the Qualifiers.

From what I've researched, she's younger then boxer by 3 days. Boxer on September 3rd, Jongmi on September 7th, both in 1980. Both are pretty hot for 31 year olds :D.

It takes lots of courage and dedication to go pro (again) when you are over 30 and not a name brand like Boxer, nevermind being a female too! Hope she does well.

Sorry didn't read the whole thread, but wasn't there some stories beside tossgirl and idra ? Tossgirl being in EG would be very very surprising. In fact i'd be willing to bet a beer or two if it was ever the case.
Also yeah she used to play zerg in bw.

Honestly, I won't be impressed before results are shown on the table.
Doesn't help saying "we got a 80 year old guy on our team" when results are never shown.

Yeah, back in BW. Idra beat Tossgirl in a televised match, and she broke down crying afterwords.

Funny joke, could've sworn Huk was doing quite alot in the GSL an when he was there IdrA as well? Yea cool story bro, tell it again? Also though he kinda counts as a Korean I still count SeleCT as a foreigner and oh yea he beat MVP at Blizzcon so again funny joke bro :D

Yeah, but like I pointed out before, Idra also only ever won one best-of-three in a Starleague qualifier, and yet he's doing quite well in StarCraft II, so it isn't unreasonable to believe she could make it into tournaments.

no.

Assuming that she isnt a special circumstance like NaDa, this means she will have to practice and live in the oGs house, which might be a little wierd being the only girl in a house of guys. Though I'm sure the fact that she is 30 and that she was used to it from broodwar helps.

General stupidity of your comment aside, what kind of ridiculous logic do you use that allows you to call Select (who is Korean by birth, but living abroad) a foreigner, while at same time HuK (who is 'foreigner' by birth but living in Korea) is a foreigner as well?

The same logic he uses to justify using SeleCT taking a game off MVP at Blizzcon to support the argument that foreigners are doing well in the GSL, even though all the foreigners (including SeleCT, if he counts) got 2-0ed this time around...

You have to consider the cyber bullying aspect of esports. Since the internet is the medium, and all fans can give their opinions anonymously, they at times are very harsh and uncivilized. Public females are subject to all sorts of chauvinism and objectification on the internet. In the case of esports, Lindsey from NASL is the prime example. Even in this thread, I would say a good 25% of the comments mention her appearance. A good portion of those are saying they are only glad she has been signed because she is hot (see the post above this one). Imagine what these comments would be if an unattractive female was signed by a high-profile team. Progamers with sudden fame aren't exactly the types to be used to publicity and prepared to handle the criticism. And more than one progamer has admitted to reading all the comments about them on the forums that they can find.

It's a damn shame that the internet is like this. It completely sucks to be a woman on the internet a lot of the time. In the case of being a woman progamer specifically, people react in a variety of ways; they get outraged and assume that the woman was only signed BECAUSE she was a a woman, they comment on their appearance, or they make some other sort of rude comment about them. They're assumed to be bad players, only signed as publicity stunts, and they are completely and totally objectified. Only when they prove themselves to be really good players does this tsunami of sexism even begin to subside. If they can see past all of this, and only care about the positive things that people say, or use the sexism as motivation for them to improve, then they can be progamers. But getting into it is a scary thing.

just for the sake that she's a girl she got into the team which is unfair. getting second in a female proleague doesn't say much either since the male leagues were of a "much" higher calibur.

Eating and sun exposal habits man.

Non-white washed Asian girls don't eat, avoid animal products when they do eat, and barely expose themselves to sunlight.

If that's true, how does a yellow washed western "girl" look?

Wish her the best of luck. Its nice to see older gamers out there.

LOL! This is picture in NOT true for American Born Asians. I think it's the hormones from produce. After 18, they turn into the Post Menopausal image.

Eating and sun exposal habits man.

Non-white washed Asian girls don't eat, avoid animal products when they do eat, and barely expose themselves to sunlight.

Slows aging . . . especially skin

Vegetarianism is a westerners thing. The only reason most asians would avoid meat is if they couldn't afford it.

Vegetarians make up a small minority of Westerners. Most Westerners consume large amounts of animal products.

You do know that Asians eat far less meat than white people out of habit right?

East Asian cuisine is very light on meat on average compared to Western cuisine. Most dishes treat meat more like a garnish or a side dish as opposed to the western mentality of treating meat as the main dish.

MarineQueenPrime LOL and female progamers suck, just because they are girls they can join a team over a skilled player. This is called discrimination :D

Assuming you are either a nerd heterosexual male or a homosexual female, that is.

Being a gay male heavily into baseball would suck.

Errr what does Tossgirl do on STX? I get annoyed at the SC2 fans who want BW players to leave just so BW dies, but if the player has no prospects than they really should consider going to SC2 before retiring from progaming. Tossgirl has done nothing note worthy and continues to be a bench warmer. I mean heck I cheer for Tossgirl, but she has not even done well in qualifiers or one PL match.

Then again if you are gay I doubt you'd have a girlfriend, so you wouldn't run the risk to get one interested in sc2 :p.
