I can understand the reaction against Coca, he did mess up and needs to be punished somehow. While the punishment seems possibly too harsh, there really isn't any other punishment available unfortunately. Letting him play in the Code S matches after this sends absolutely the wrong statement (that throwing matches is okay).

What else would you guys suggest as a punishment? I don't think there is anyone here who thinks Coca shouldn't be punished for throwing a won match.

I think an apology would have been enough, I dont feel he needed to give up his spot he worked very hard for that and one stupid mistake shouldn't take all that hard work away imho.

Wow, what the absolute fuck.

I understand Coca deciding to forfeit the game, wrong as it may be, but that was pretty stupid. Byun should be ashamed of himself though, and should have just fought to the bitter end, as there's always a next ESV or GSL qualifier if he fails, hell, he could even try MLG for a Code S spot.

Coca's amazing as a player, and I really enjoyed and eagerly anticipated each match of his, so now I'm sad that I won't be able to see more any time soon.

This whole situation is just childish and retarded.

how the hell is this match fixing?

if i face idra at MLG and beat him the first game then stomp him the second game and before he GG's prematurely i tell him "hey noob ill give you one more chance to beat me" and give him the second game and then stomp him in the third. would you call that match fixing?

no. thats what coca did. its not match fixing at all. wow.

I honestly don't see how this is a big deal, if Coca wants to voluntarily lose games, who's stopping him?

Hmmm... Even though it is not very important. This is an ethical issue, albeit not on the level of sAviOr.

You know, on the one hand, it was definitely their immaturity that led to this.

On the other, I have to say that if it had to happen to anyone, it's a good thing it happened to players as young as them. If they want to get out of progaming, they can still pick up their education almost right where they left off and continue with their lives like nothing happened. Harder to do that the older you are.

This is still really depressing. I've gone from the "wtf" phase to the "this is ridiculous" phase and now I'm just dicking around in the "I kind of want to go to sleep but this is interesting" phase.

This to me is totally fine. No money was involved, it is done in many sports like F1 to let their other driver win. It is a flawed system is people can drop games to benefit them.

Why is this even a question? No, absolutely no.

What you just said even proves it - it's done in a flawed system. Flawed as in it needs fixing, that allowing it to happen is inherently wrong.

If I'm not mistaken, In the Chess and Magic the Gathering communities, "strategic forfeit" is an accepted part of the community/scene.

B: fuck, you said you'll let me win
C: I have to practice, there's 3 Ts in my group

B: Next opponent is P, so just forfeit
B: Where's your teams T?
C: G-star event

26:20, Coca at 150pop 4 mining bases to Byun's 45pop 0 mining base

Harsh but necessary penalties considering it is just two kids (friends?) stuffing around... But stuffing around in a very serious environment where the results affect things as important as entry to GSL!

Maybe "match fixing" isn't the proper term, but what he did was dishonest. I'm sure you can agree that what he did was wrong as it negatively affects the competition. Also, simply choosing to forfeit games can be abused further than this, though at the same time I think his punishment is too severe. It's hard for the GSL and SlayerS to be lighter on their punishment without making it trivial though.

The only time forfeiting is strategic is when you get an advantage from it. Remember when IdrA decided to stop playing in IPL3's pool play? He was already guaranteed a seed for the Championship bracket, and he decided to rest. That's strategic. Saying "You asked for another game even though I could advance by killing your ass right now" is not strategic.

I feel the punishment from SlayerS and the withdrawal from Code S a fit punishment for a player who has done something very stupid.

Byun should be banned from any entry to major tournaments for a good lengthy period of time.

Regardless if they are good players or not, or however many fan boys they have. There is no room for this stupidity and it should not be tolerated. They deserved to be hit with the full force of punishment.

Many other pros are working their ass off way to much and they don't deserve to have idiots getting up to dodgy shit like this.

How would you feel being in the same round as Byun, you play a tough match and lose against another player... whilst Byun is getting a free ride to the next round?

Personally, I love watching Coca play. But I have lost all respect for him. This is a dog act.

He needed Game 3 so he could practice against Terran some more?

Did he really have to give up his Code S spot just because of some online tourney? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz i really hope he gets back to SlayerS and GSL
Let a man play chess, and tell him that every pawn is his friend. Let him think both bishops holy. Let him remember happy days in the shadows of his castles. Let him love his queen. Watch him lose them all.

According to the translation - Coca wanted more ZvT practice.
