I've noticed that what music I'm listening to can greatly affect how well i play. However, it is not consistent with the race I'm playing. For example, as zerg i play best when listening to rap and second best when listening to dubstep. I rarely miss injects and am on top of my game, but when listening to other types of 'calmer' music i struggle. But for protoss, i play best when listening to alternative rock, electronic, and classical music. I dont play terran.

if you feel i did not include your favorite genre let me know, and i will fix it!
Dubstep for sure 100% helps my Zerg play, because the beats are fast and make me want to move/do something instead of sitting there. So dubstep is my best bet for Zerg play improvements. (Y) fast beats= More apm
Music does affect how well I play, unfortunately it's usually for the worse. I get distracted easily. Sometimes music puts me in the zone and helps me concentrate for a longer time, though. This is why I prefer instrumental music.
I don't see how race affects which type of music to listen to though, unless you're listening to specific types of music to enhance game atmosphere or something, which I don't really see from most TL members.
some people play better without music because it helps them focus. others play with music to make them play 'faster'. personally fast or slow music doesn't affect me, i have both speed of songs in my playlist.
Music has great effect on your play. I believe for such a fast paced game, it's really important not to listen to stressful music, atleast not for long periods. It'll make you rage, tilt and play bad. Faster music will raise your apm and quicken your thinking. It's important that it's not something catchy, or your mind will focus on the music too much. I believe that generally the best kind of music to listen to while gaming, is some background trance, that's very monotome, that you don't KNOW the songs. That it has various fast beats, but nothing that singles out.
Well maybe for Zerg it's important to listen to classical, just cuz it's such a stressful race, in general.

I play way better when I'm pumped up I get bored and forget things if I'm calm
I've noticed when I play music, I'm focusing so much on the game that I don't notice the music. I probably couldn't remember what songs I listened to at all.
I play best with dubstep, hip-hop/rap. With DnB it gets a bit tricky, as sometimes I get too pumped up, which in return causes me to make silly mistakes.
So many K-Pop fans! I find the cachet of K-Pop the weirdest thing about the SC2 community; it all sounds like Power Rangers music to me. To each their own, I guess.
I know music makes me play slightly worse (maybe a lot worse) but I play Starcraft to have fun and relax so I don't usually mind. I don't really listen to one specific genre, and I also find the idea that different music suits different races kind of strange. Surely individual taste matters more than what race you're playing? Anyway, music I listen to:
Girl Talk Iron Maiden Dvorak's cello concerto Beethoven 5th + 9th symphonies Black Mountain Daft Punk (Tron soundtrack!) Mozart piano sonatas The Hood Internet
It sounds weird but I always ladder better listening to Kpop, followed closely by vocal trance/dubstep. Its kinda weird because any other game I play I just listen to death metal, but with sc2 it actually hinders my performance. Weird huh? oh and i play Terran btw
I generally listen to instrumental stuff so that I'm not distracted by any lyrics. Jazz, classical, instrumental rock, electronica/trance, and maybe some light dubstep.
Saying that one type of music is best to listen to while playing a race is a ridiculous statement in itself. I really enjoy Jazz, so I listen to Jazz regardless of what race I'm playing. Also, for people voting based on general speeds in music, you can have extremely slow or extremely fast music of any genre. Music genre is irrelevant to what race you're playing, only relevant to who you are and what you enjoy.
its best to play without any music, you will play better !!!!! although its no fun to play without music and i hate it so i prefer to listen to upbeat music :D
KPOP FOR SURE. There is a reason why Koreans are SO GOOD AT STARCRAFT. They Listen to kpop while playing, as you can see on streams. There is a reason why Huk got so good, he listened to kpop. Either that or some deadmau5 strobe is always good :D dubstep is fuckin terrible for sc2, shit just makes you mad and rage... Maybe thats why idra always rages
Music does not directly effect the Starcraft but it changes your mood. No one music is better for playing SC2 it's the music that you enjoy or feel makes you play SC2 better, all it does is affect the mind-state.
Since my idol was MC, I can only live up to his standard in two parts. I listen to Bruce Springsteen to fulfill the boss part and play protoss. boss toss ftw!

This is what happens most of the time, too.
Hence the reason I can listen to anything from classical to metal...and be a-ok...
people's voices on the other hand...now they're a distraction...
I like busy music when playing, I usually listen to anything uptempo electronic or rock/metal or combination lol. Usually when I pick just the right music at the right time I play way better then I normally do. I definitely think it's important to listen to music while playing but this differs per person obviously.
Kpop? I would attack my hatch with my own drones at the start of every game just to make it stop if I listened to kpop.
Edit : I like to listen mostly to electronic music (not dance or house, more stuff like apparat or ellen alien), with no lyrics as I find it distracting. And yeah I noticed songs that are slow can lower my average apm. As people said above though I phase out when I play and don't remember what songs I heard, but I notice when music is not playing and it bothers me.
Personally, I think it's best to listen to nerd music while being nerdy. I Fight Dragons is my current favourite. They need to make a song that uses SC noises though, that would be most appropriate.
I play zerg... My playlist consists of everything, asking alexandria, dean martin, the doors, nirvana, frank sinatra, some starcraft music (husky, temp0 etc) RHCP... don't really think that it effects me in the early mid game, but in the late game (where i used to essentially daydream) it helps me keep going, which is probably why lategame is my strongest.
Instrumental metal (not classical/jazz) or reggae or ambient is generally the best for me I find. However it more depends what kind of mood I'm in, certain moods combined with certain genres is the way it works for me (although I feel if I didn't listen to music I'd probably play better :D)
You are missing a poll? Music effects how I play: Yes. Music makes me play wayy worse. I make so many silly mistakes. I miss alerts. Everything for me seems to go wrong with music playing.
I'm a Psychology major and one of the studies we did was the affect of Music + Alcohol on driving.
Results showed that music on it's own had none to very little effect, alcohol increased the number of mistakes and alcohol + music had an even higher level of mistakes
So my deduction is no it doesn't effect how you play unless you mix it with chemical interruptions

Could you do that study again with Starcraft? :-) Maybe let thousand people play with and without music and note the average winrate or something like that :-)
You kind of forgot different metal genres, like trash metal and such. I always listen to either rammstein or pink floyd while gaming, but Metallica is my favourite band. I practicly only listen to rock music while doing anything but i have occaisonly started listening to rap. ( not 50 cent or something like that. i mean Eminem, tupac or weird al stuff :D)

I listen to music while I play, but I often wont hear any of it once the game goes past the early game. I tend to sort of zone it out. Its really funny because I'll look at the recently played songs and be like "when did I listen to THAT?"

Mainly listen to touhou music while on ladder, I don't notice a difference barring if I keep it too loud I sometimes not hear warnings and do some really retarded things (One occasion was when I did a 1gate expand and added on some more for a zealot + sentry defence then when I looked back at my main 3 reapers killed every probe I had because I didn't hear that they were under attack :/).

I know why kpop won. There's no choice for Touhou.
For me, I play better without music but stay calmer with it. Without music i might just rage out and BM every time I lose, with music I'll probably lose more but the music kind of stops me from having an inner dialogue about it.
I'm Terran and I listen to liquid Drum and Bass and some Dubstep when I play. Doesn't really seem to affect my play too much, gets me a little bit more pumped though.

Er, this poll isn't measuring which music makes you play best for each race, it's just measuring which races like which kinds of music best. Because, presumably, most people will want to listen to musical genres they actually like while they play lol. It's still pretty interesting to note the music tastes, it's just that the polls are not showing what the OP says.
Anyway, I play Terran, and I like listening to aggressive rock while I play. Gives me the urge to go roflstomp some nubs.
Whenever I don't listen to music while playing for a week my mmr goes up from facing low plats and high golds to diamonds, because I can concentrate much better. But its more fun to play with music, so im fine playing worse because of it.
On November 13 2011 07:16 Linwelin wrote: Koreans listen to kpop Koreans are the best starcraft players Therefore kpop makes you a good starcraft player
lol irrefutable. It's a big sacrifice to make to get good at SC.
When i'm not so focused on the game to actually pay attention to other things for more than a split second I like to listen to nostalgic music. Nostalgic music to me usually consists of tracks from other video games as well as anime, GSL, and kpop. I'll get a nice rush of adrenaline when i get into loading a match and the pokemon red/blue battle (vs trainer) track starts playing.
I always listen to relaxing music (Insomniac Olympics Radio on Pandora), so when I start to get mad I remember that it's just a game and there are much more important things to worry about
The polls are near similar for every race lmfao, guess it's just what people prefer ^^ I use k-pop or jazz when I ladder or classical for tourney games or practice sessions
But I'm disappointed in the way the music is collected in the OP, as well as with the options available...
can you be more descriptive? i might be able to fix it
Sorry, I should have been more clear, I cam off a bit to rude there
The way I see it, music is to complicated and diverse to group into those categories. While I am sure that you did so because these are the most common groups of music Starcrafters listen to, but I am anal about proper categorization of music (and other things).
In my opinion, it should have been done something like this (though I don't necessarily think you "have" to change it):
-Korean pop -Other pop (modern popular music). -Rock (classic, soft, blues, etc). -Rock (hard, alt, modern). -Death and Heavy metal/etc. -Jazz/Blues -Classical Music -Dubstep/Electronic -Rap -Reggae -Instrumental (Modern). -World and Historical Music -Disco/Dance (ex. Michael Jackson, BeeGees. Includes Funk). -Music from Movies/TV shows/jingles/etc. -Video Game music (soundtracks, etc). -The in game, StarCraft II music. -None -Other
Something like that. Sorry, I'm a bit of a stickler...

This.
I usually play best listening to faster Rock/Metal when I play, a lot of John 5's solo stuff mostly at the moment. Nothing wrong with a bit of KPOP either though
Just thought id mention for people playing music while playing. Test your volume levels i once lost my entire army because i didnt hear the "nuclear launch detected" in a particularly good part of a song
I listen to a wide variety of music, going from early`s 30 to late 70`s. The genres i listen to are: -Swing -Rockabilly -60`s rock (beatles, led zep) -Surf (from beach boys to straitjackets) -Western (gets me in an epic mood to micro) -Latin (bossa-nova, latin-jazz) - Acid jazz
i don't listen to music when i play, but if i did, since i play zerg, it would be the first 40 seconds of this song repeated over and over. i seriously think that whoevers making the zerg music for HOTS should just take the first 40 secs and expand upon it
Classical for zerg...why did you even bother haha Kpop sounds like an interesting choice, i really have shown a liking to it recently, but nothing beats the GSL playlist on grooveshark, always gets me pumped
Does anyone else listen to symphonic or cinematic music while playing? Epic film scores pump me up like no other for gaming. My SC2 playlist is along the lines of Two Steps From Hell, Hanz Zimmer, Howard Shore, E.S. Posthumus, etc...
I start off with slow and soothing music (Sigur Ros, Grand National, Clint Mansell). If I start to own the ladder, I pump it up and listen to head-banging rock (QOTSA, System of a Down, Foo Fighters).
I don't listen to music the majority of the time I ladder, I actually turn of the BGM and only play with alerts and stuff. Every once in a while I put on kpop and play to that.
I just listen to whatever I'm in the mood to listen to. So that usually means some relaxing post rock/indie rock or some death/black metal. Honestly I rarely ever pay attention to the music except sometimes a really awesome solo or melodic hook catches my attention. It's really just something to help pass the time during the slow intros of matches for me.
On November 13 2011 15:15 GeeseHoward wrote: I don't understand kpop. Why is there no punk rock or classical music options since those are the two best genres of music.
Kpop all the way. You want to be as imba as the koreans, you must start with their music first. I'm sure you won't be hearing Mozart if you visit the Ogs house.
Anyway on the serious side, I do think music with a quick tempo will speed up your play a little.
How in the world do you not have a option for trance ? Vocal trance is the best for me when I play, I love to hear girls sing to me while im playing zerg bassically.
I listen to anything with a good rhythmic drive while laddering. Mostly jazz and hip-hop, sometimes straight up funk, sometimes electronic music or even tango.
I dont think listening to music affects my gameplay. However it makes those damn losses much more tolerable when you have pleasant sounds in your ears. I play zerg and listen mostly to trance and psytrance.
voting options are somewhat vague; you only ask if music affects your game play, but you didn't specify if it improved or hindered your ability.
music is a distraction and hinders my play typically. it's much much worse in fps games, as you can't hear important game sounds as well (such as people that are low health, or are sneaking by you etc). thus i only listen to music if i'm just screwing around and don't care if i play like crap as a result.
I don't think music has any effect on how you play, I play zerg mostly, listen to lots of death metal, thrash metal, progressive metal and black metal when I play and don't notice any difference when I play with music and play without.
Best music for Zerg? KPOP! Best music for Protoss? KPOP! Best music for Terran? KPOP! sigh.... I'll just go cry in the corner listening to metal while I play....
Honestly, it doesn't really matter. You will be so focused on the game that your brain will drown out any music that comes out. However, I still like playing music though.
I can't play music when I play. I find it hard to focus on more then one thing at a time, so Starcraft is already very hard for me to play. Throw in some music to blur out some of the alearts and my already semi pathetic game goes to the doghouse.

Sometimes I'm so focused, that after a game I realize that I forgot to click play button on music, haha :D
EDIT: When I have a tournament or important match I listen to dubstep because it's fast and raises my APM, but when I play Ladder or just for fun, I usually listen to trailer, soundtrack, classical music.
I listen to pretty upbeat techno, alterna-rock, classic rock, disney music (hakuna matata is the best song ever when you're smashing in a zerg's face) and most importantly, ska and punk.
Streams that have kpop immediately get turned off. The one exception is Rainbow, but that's because he trolls so hard it's epic fun to watch.
When I started listening to music when playing, I was skeptical and felt it had to be something without lyrics and a fairly fast beat, so I stuck to only Apocalyptica, Escala and similar. But as time has passed, I can now listen to pretty much anything and play at the same level. It doesnt affect me as long as I enjoy the music... If I try to play without music, things to to hell. I can't really explain why...
Best music for me is still most lighter metal genres, as it's what I enjoy the most in general and it has fairly fast beats.
Disney music in general I find great for Playing SC, but I particularly enjoy the Pirates of the Carribbean soundtracks composed by Hans Zimmer. TLO listens to them alot while laddering, it's just such epic music.
Holy shit people love K-Pop and Pop... can't understand that.
I'm listening to nothing or dubstep. It's a habit because back in the days when Idra streamed a lot more I would listen to his music and automatically make a connection between dubstep and good, solid play. ^^ But from time to time I refuse to listen any music simply because it can affect your play by missing nukes (how many drones had to die because of my music...) and stuff like that.
Yes I do listen to music while playing, electro industrial / industrial metal / alternative metal, gives a kick to press them buttons faster heh, however when I focus more on the game, I completely don't know which song is playing...
TL's kpop bias showing, and I have no problems with this... </im so looonely> It was a dead-end poll anyways, basically "what's your favorite genre to play SC2 to?" mostly regardless of race. Not like a race has an objective musical personality, etc
e.g. I listen to what do you even classify this as; Terran
I used to play with loud music, then i got nuked in my mineral line. After that i play with low music in the background so i can hear the nuke warnings. I am to used to SC/BW way of getting a nuke warning with a text, the symbols that is now i never see.
Usualy i listen to WhiteRA's Partymix (i like it) but sometimes i listen to Synth/Goth/Metal
i listen to film music only cannot stand metal, and other genres i like (rock, funk, 70's, classic etc) just either are too distracting or too annoying over time to listen to but this thread rather seems like a troll thread to me, since there is only music listed in the poll that i cannot stand.
When I play faster music I often get higher apm but that causes me to make dumb mistakes and lose more often.
When I listen to classic music or no music at all I am winning much more since I am able to think more clearly and focus on what my opponent is doing, what should I be doing etc. Of course my multitask is not that much greater but I win more still.
To be honest I don't think listening to music affects your play, not positively at least. That being said I do listen to music while playing for extended periods of time, I just make sure it isn't too loud, or too distracting. Usually I end up listening to some instrumental stuff, jazz, blues, lots of acoustic stuff, some very light electronic music like Emancipator, Miike Snow, rjd2 etc. I listen to a lot of heavy rock, metal, death metal, heavier music in general, but never while playing SC. It just doesn't do well together, neither does dubstep, imo. ~low-mid master toss.
Music makes me play worse. I turn it off during tournaments and competitive games. However, laddering with music is just more enjoyable, so of course I listen. Electro House.
Personally, I like dubstep or anything with a solid beat. Anything with a lull in the music is no good, because I don't want to be thinking about what I am listening too.
I feel that dubstep makes me play faster but more sloppier. Calming soothing music makes me think straight and it feels good even after a win or a loss. No music makes me concentrate more at lans tho
I think it has to do with a constant rhythm in your head. I know that when I listen to Trance or House, I tend to have better accuracy on my timings and my macro. When listening to music with lots of vocals and screaming, I have a bigger issue with these basics.
Music always decreases my skill level. When I play with music, I have been playing against mid-high plats... since not listening to music, my win rate has gone up and now I'm playing against diamonds in almost every match up. I am about to be promoted based on my win/loss ratio and etc... so yea :D
I sometimes do listen to music while laddering, but I don't see any difference in my play whether I'm listening or not. I also tend to listen to different kinds of music, so I can't really say what music is best to play for different races.
I dont really see a link between the race you play and what kind of music you like best while playing it. My taste of music doesnt just change because i play zerg and not terran. Maybe this is influenced by the pro streams but imo the 2nd poll doesnt give any reasonable results.
In all seriousness, though, I listen to electronic/instrumentals- Frank Klepacki, some Moby, the aformentioned bw tunes, and just to throw me off Disney and everyone's earlygame reference and homage, U2. Also the Ice Age opening riff. Top that for weird. Who cares what race I play when I listen to this melodiously popular crap? The vulture song is perfect for telling you to backstab in a FFA, and see honeybadger on hakuna matata. Edit: forgot Chagall Guevara.
i listen to pretty much the opposite music that most streamers listen too. I think techno sucks so I listen to folk music while I play. I think the mellow vibes from music helps keep my head clear so I make better decisions.
Hip-Hop Rock Post-Rock Punk Post-Hardcore Metal (Mostly Sludge, stoner metal) Electro (Ambient, IDM, Synth, Dub, House, Trip hop) Indie Rock Jazz Shoegaze, Dream Pop
I usually have my whole music library on shuffle while playing SC, which results in a playlist consisting of:
50% Black/Death Metal 30% Rock/Core 20% Various Metal/Indie/Other
Don't see any direct affection of gameplay by music genres, in general you don't notice anything beside the game anyway. Guess it should just fit your general preferences.
Horrible poll honestly. Pop, despite being the standard in generic music thats designed to be brainless/catchy, is still a catch all phrase for a huge range of genres. Electronic, and alt rock should not be grouped like that. Furthermore Dubstep is electronic, and widely misused in describing alot of electronic music. IE: people call skrillex dubstep all the time, it's not. And of course, no terran poll, it should be included just for the sake of consistency.
Dubstep is the key to unlocking a Zerg's fullest potential. No exaggeration, it is by far the best. Skrillex in particular gets me more in the zone than anything, and to an astonishing degree. I'm a Diamond Zerg, but with dubstep on I beat my mid-Masters friends all the time. Hard to believe, but it's really crazy.
How about the music Blizzard gives us in game? I don't really notice a difference because the music fades out in the background when I'm playing. When I am listening to fast angry music it increases my APM by a good 5-10 points through out the game.
I listen to my random playlist on itunes, it contains mostly trance and old dubstep, not skrillex type dubstep where it just goes WOBWOBWOB dubstep like this
I also like to listen to psytrance/psychill like this
but I mean I don't have a particular playlist that I like to listen to while playing SC2 I just put my itunes on randomize and listen to what comes on.
I like the ingame music because it's ambient and doesn't distract me. I can't play while listening to my regular music because a cool guitar solo or drum beat starts playing and I instantly turn into a bronze leaguer.
I always found music distracting until I tried mass gaming sessions for the first time. I found that after the 4th or 5th hour, I was going insane--raging at every loss, just going ape-shit. So I decided to start listening while I play, and it really helped. I think it might actually be a little distracting, but it helps you take the game way less seriously, which is something I really needed. Now I always want music while I play. It just really helps take the edge off.
My SC2 playlist is kinda weird. It's got some of everything: RJD2, Robyn, Usher, Dream Theater, SOAD, Styx, Boston, Wu Tang, Notorious B.I.G., Miley Cyrus, Nero, Daft Punk, etc.
I listen to all kinds of music when I play and the volume level really affects me. But it isn't consistent. Sometimes if the music is too quiet I become too relaxed but often if the volume is too loud I cannot focus. Varies so much on mood for ne.
you don't have my category, but Uplifting Trance has been my go to music for gaming since I started playing counter strike. IMO works good no matter what race you play
music can help me play at a certain pace. keeps me from getting too lax. however i do like to listen to classical and jazz while playing as it can be both intense but relaxing at any given moment.
stuff like 1812 overture can start playing at like the most incredible moments in any given game hahaha
I actually found myself playing worse when having music in the background. It's sad because i love music.. but i can see the difference a lot in my play.
I haven't noticed any particular correlation between race performance based on the genre of music I was listening to. I have found, however, that terrible music does not inspire my best play.
I can't play without music, too hard to focus because I hear the keyboard and it messes up with my keyboard/mouse coordination (stutter step becomes shitty). I listen mostly to house I think (fusion radio), I tried kpop on seoulfm but most of the songs are too boring/slow for my taste thus I stopped it. I'd like to listen to MKP radio station (seems like korean rap) because it felt nice for playing but I cant finf it. I have to lower the sound quite a lot however, because it's bothering if the music is too loud. I really think that listening to music can help your gameplay, when I was playing Super smash bros melee (quite competitive fighting game), listening to high bpm songs was helping a lot.
I like to have some epic song playing, so as to make me feel better, when i ladder (Knights of Cydonia <3) For serious games, and in situations when I have to think a lot, I've always felt Radiohead made me cleverer.
I'm pretty sure this is just me being superstitious, but I haven't lost a game since I started beginning my ladder session with a particular song in my playlist. I've won six straight on my main and five straight on my alt (with equivalent MMR).
I dont think they type of music effects the way I play but I have to have some music otherwise its just weird.... I would say that without music I play worse cause its kinda like a distraction now that Im used to it.
That being said, if someone came in and changed my metal or electronica to something like country or some mainstream BS then I would probably end up losing as well! :p
I play Zerg, and when I do play it i mostly listen to metal (thrash and death to be more precise). It just gives me tempo and keeps me on my toes and in a way "forces" me to frantically do things

there is no certain music for a race ... its yust if u listen to music that you like your concentration improves a bit.( some scientists checked that)
and thats all .. for me so far i could never listen to k-pop or other pop "crap" while playing, because i simply dislike this kind of music and it would have a terrible effect on my game.
For me it's always been either K-pop, whenever I'm playing a little more casual or I'm in a bad mood etc, otherwise when I'm in serious ladder mode or similar, I'll go with more epic music, most commonly Two Steps From Hell, I've got an about 5 hour playlist with them on my harddrive, about 130 soundtracks
Edit: Not quite sure why you would vote differently for different races in SC2 though
Meh, Am I the only one that, after trying to put some custom music, realised to go so much into the game, that sometimes I am not even able to hear\listen to music while it is playing?
Well, music does affect my playing. Makes it worse. I'm not focusing on the game as much, because some of the focus is on the music. Kind of similar to how I really can't listen to music while I'm reading. I read the words but if you ask me after 5 minutes any specific questions on what I just read, I couldn't tell you. It's especially bad with music I like, I just listen and go on some kind of brainless auto-pilot for anything else I'm doing.
I really need music when I play, or some kind of sound, it can be a movie on my 2nd monitor, a youtube clip or just the raido. I don't know why but I need some kind of sound, otherwise it feels really weird.
I don't play 1v1 ladder with music but i do often play on the other ladders with music. I don't know if it makes me play worse but i'm not taking any risks
I personally listen to music while playing, and to Sergio1992 yes sometimes when the game ends I will be like "When did this song start?" near the end of it. Get so focused I don't even hear it.
I mainly listen to Goregrind/Death Metal while playing.
I really enjoy Cannibal Corpse, Skinless, Devourment, Fuck..I'm Dead, Funeral Rape, and I could go on for hours. While playing a game and destroying people. But I also like to listen to Necro, Circle of Tyrants, Bloodline, and Ill Bill. That Death Rap mixed in with Death metal and the occasional Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time songs.<3 Zeldas Lullaby and pretty much anything on it. Also a ton of Mindless Self Indulgence. I'm not a fan of that style of music but I just love them. I don't feel that the pace of the music has anything to do with how well I play or how fast. Its just music.
But I love nothing more than to play while listening to Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face. Has been my favorite song to game to for the past 5 years, and will continue to do so. Also when I used to play Call of Duty 4 I listened to Suicide Silence, and Dr.Acula a bit but haven't really since I started Starcraft2.
I have one Dubstep; Skillrex - I want to kill everybody, Lets see I like listening to Cocorosie - Werewolf to start a game off since its slow.
I got a little Deathcore which is just Emmure, and 1 Suicide Silence song. As Deathcore is to slow and boring for me, and its not 'brutal' what-so-ever. And I tend to enjoy brutal things.
Why didn't the poll have 'Metal'? I mean I've seen a few others in this thread post Metal genres and I would've voted if there was a Metal choice in the poll. Because I don't listen to anything posted for the most part, Maybe a song here and there but that is about it.
I listen to a very wide range of music types while playing. It's not so much the type of music that is important to me, it just has to be something that I enjoy. I feel like it helps me relax, and be able to focus more.
I used to go with dubstep, but I've started to listen to calmer music instead. While dubstep might be beneficial to your apm, calm music helps a lot with anxiety if you have any form of ladder fear. It keeps your adrenaline from getting the best of you and calms your rage.
i listen music to break the silence. life is boring and music makes it more enjoyable. i dont think i play better or worse when listening i think it comes down to the habbit.
i listen to radio paradise. check it out guys if youre into goooood solid music. i even listen to this at my work and all my coworkers love it. i just feel the need to share this. i know it sounds silly but good music can do alot for you and if you have a bit of taste left after crushing your senses with modern dumbstep please give it a try. maybe takes some hours to adjust your brain to good taste :D
I paced music helps me concentrate, once I am in the zone/concentrated however I completely forget about the music and won't even notice when it stops. However if I notice the music stopped or its play a slow beat it bothers me.
Hmm... I find that when I play to songs I like I do better, whereas if I play to songs I don't, I play worse.
So I went through my entire iTunes library and rated every song, now I play on "Top Rated" with shuffle on, seems to work for me anyway. So it doesn't matter the genre, just if I like the songs I'm listening to or not.
I feel like these questions are kinda of wierd.. Like what does being protoss or teran have to do with what music we listen to, based on results overall most gamers regardless of race listen to kpop. The question should just say.. " What music do you listen to" Unless you were trying to find out if there is any difference that may differ by race personality wise.

Yeah, lol. Usually this is what happens to me too.
hahaahah fuuuuuuuuuu you just ruined my manhood X.X
lolll happy to oblige :D
i like to think that this playlist is closer to the "manly" end of the kpop spectrum... at least it's minimal on the boy bands. + a healthy amount of epik high and a bit of korean indie/rock
...or at least that's what i tell myself to justify listening to this mysteriously catchy synth-laden foreign awesomeness -- also, i do find it beneficial (energizing?) to listen to while sc2'ing
I prefer not to listen to music when I need to concentrate because music is quite distracting (at least for me) and my macro/micro tends to slip because of it.
Yes, it affects me a lot, I have actually played with music on/off and different genres.
I think it may be different from person to person, but I really like to have music on with music that have faster tempo or heavy beats, so yeah, KPop, rock..etc.
without music, just can not play. When in the game ithe music turnd off, i make terribel desicions and lose the game. And without music, i would rage as after every game.^^
I like to use Last.fm as a radio. I like my classc rock radio so mutch, only becasue of this musc i am in plat :D
For me instrumentals are the best. Different kinds of epic classical music, such as the kinds they use in action movies.
One that I love is "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Peer Gynt. In situations where I'm trying to do a lot of things at once, the climax at the song's end helps move me faster. When that climax comes in at moments when I'm not doing alot though it makes me misclicks things.
I deffiantly thinks its help, looking back I can see myself losing and then going mad after a loss in quietness but when the music is playing in the background I just get on with it!
Think all types can be good but not depressing sad songs lol
Trance has a nice steady beat and is usually quite soothing and keeps me relaxed so that I can think. My playlist usually consists of trance + chillstep (chill dubstep)
Right now, whenever i'm liestening to music while playing, i have it on pretty low volume so i can hear all in-game sounds and not miss when upgrade is complete or drop happens. Mostly playing baroque radio with Bach and shit
in my opinion, if you are looking to help your play with music, you should choose songs that match ur "tapping routine" tempo. The song should have a constant and fast beat so you can hit the macro keys at the tempo of the song. if i listen to calm music while playing i get the icefinger syndrome (known by all players who live in cold countries )
however, its true music can make you miss Nydus or Nuclear Alerts which is VERY annoying :p
I used to listen to heavy rock/metal when i played zerg, then i did an experiment the other day to see how music affects my winrate. Kpop improves my winrate by atleast 15% over longer ladder sesions 0.o
Actually, I listen to old rock like The Rolling Stones and other but, yes, I play better when i listen to Dubstep or others with more beats ( I'm a Zerg player )
I can't focus when I play music. Whenever I resorted to playing music while studying, my grades plummeted. Similarly, my skill level, and most notably my ability to watch the minimap and multitask, drops if I listen to music while playing Starcraft 2.
i always listen to music while i play- HOWEVER- i never notice it- i only notice the game sounds- its kinda weird but its like my mind basically goes into full concentration on the task at hand only.
I always listen to music, but I don´t even notice it. I feel it makes me play faster and keep me pumped, but the only times I actually here the music is between the games.
it's more of a mental thing. you listen to your favorite stuff, making you feel less stressed and more comfortable. i listen to anything when playing, it just makes me more confident and at peace.
If Im just starting, I listen to zen soothing music. If im on at least a 2 game win streak, I try to amp it a bit with heavy metal to keep up with the intensity I stop playing after losing 2x or 3x, relax a bit, and then restart again.
When i hear music while i play it's more likely thati get distracted and i start autopilot, and playing poorly while i see myself simply getting stomped while enjoying good music. I'm Terran and i like listening to DnB because it's a more repetitive genre and the beats are fast increasing my adrenaline while not distracting me too much. But hey DnB is my fav genre so i might be biased, as well as the rest 99% who voted.
I feel like there should be an option on the poll for music adversely affecting play. I play worse when I listen to music, but usually at LANs I need to blare music so that I can block out my surroundings. I'd much prefer to play in a quiet room with no music, and just concentrate on the game as much as possible.
But when I do need to listen to music, I listen to happy and upbeat tunes - anything that might help prevent me from getting any mad or negative feelings while playing. Aside from tilting, I want to have fun, not get mad and stressed about my hobby. It's also near impossible to do any meaningful learning after games while angry.
I play mostly music from video games such as C&C soundtrack, SC1 soundtrack, FF7, Street Fighter 2, pretty much OST's from all game genres but mostly previous RTS titles. When im not listening to that it will probably be heavy metal or old school jungle. Something with a bit of pace and aggression to it. Terran player.
At the moment, I'm all about "classical" music (sorry, I just resent the term), as I find that many other things actually overhype me. They make me play faster than I can actually play well, and shit.
I saw zergs had the least votes when it game to the fugly K pop shit and i suddenly felt ashamed it wasn't protoss, but than i saw 2nd for zerg is dubstep and i became happy again, even more happier after i saw protoss are leading on jazz I for one like to listen to the "classics" of rock/jazz/blues/folk/metal kind of music ( the stones, dylan, Louis A, Maiden, ACDC... you name them ) and recently a shit lot of music from the baroque period ( Vivaldi, Bach, Frideric... etc )

Yeah, same as this guy. I can notice my music for short periods of time at certain moments (early game, for example) but nothing major.
I play horribly when I listen to friends speaking in skype though. And I play Zerg, btw.
I almost always listen to alternative rock, or maybe some instrumental music when I need to relax. My playlist is mostly alternative rock and Coldplay.
Bumped. I just looked this up and was astounded at the ridiculousness of the fact that people vote "K-pop and other pop" as a joke and then we don't get a decent and honest result. Just because they're speaking Korean does not mean you will play better. I HIGHLY doubt that almost EVERYBODY listens to K-Pop when they play SC2. I have, and I didn't like it. Meanwhile I listen to dubstep, and it helps. Under K-Pop I feel as though people were honest but seriously, don't vote for something just because it's interesting or funny or whatever. Just say what you listen to! It's NOT that hard! That's almost like voting for a president just because he/she is black or mormon or white or a woman. Get it together people. Look at what's underneath, not the first thing that you see in the music.

It's Starcratifically proven that listening to K-pop makes you better at Starcraft.
There's obviously no other reason for Koreans being so gosu.
I usually listen to hip hop such as SoundzImage, Evan Awake, Shing02+Nujabes, Avens. ALT-TAB Sage used to use may playlist during his stream when he was still in NSHS. It seems to relaxes me during my ladder games so i don't overreact to things.
So damn good when you want to calm down after losing or just to relax yourself during games.
