The first thread was closed due to a small and non informative OP.
I was lucky enough to catch the link before it was closed and watched it for about 10-15 minutes and it was absolutely hilarious and informative to see what these guys who obviously aren't into Starcraft like we are discuss Esports and how it works.

Here is the link
http://vimeo.com/30715947
You need to wait and let it load tell the 40 minute mark and from there listen to them talk about Starcraft not only as a spectator sport but how someone from the outside plays it, There is some funny jokes in there to listen for as well.

"Koreans are to Starcraft as Black people are to football" That had me laughing for a long time. So give it a listen..

I wanted to discuss what Joe Rogan is talking about toward the end of the segment about Starcraft were he mentions watching Billiards on TV and how if you don't play it it's not fun to watch. Do you think SC will catch Mainstream people is it entertaining enough for people who have never even played through the campaign?

from wildchild15 on reddit:
switch to html5 player using the small link just down and right from the video window.. allows you to skip to point.

edit: but i don't see it

It was interesting but you could tell that the one guy trying to explain it to the others doesn't have experience explaining the game to people with 0 previous exposure to the game. Right off the bat he was using jargon and specific Starcraft terms like Spawning Pool and I think that turned them off a little bit.

I don't think I agree with his point. My roommate is the polar opposite of a person that would enjoy starcraft but whenever there's an MLG, I'll put it on my laptop and he'll get drawn in for a match or two.

I think the main thing these guys are missing is that they have no idea how great the casting is. You can know next to nothing about sc2 and still be pretty drawn in by the hype and analysis from people like husky and day9.

There are always going to be exceptions to the rule. But I think in general it is true. That being said I think anyone with any type of RTS experience like Dawn of War, Age of Empires, Command and Conquer etc. could watch a Starcraft game with good casters and get drawn in.

That's true, I was more thinking about someone who doesn't play video games at all watching Starcraft if they would get into it.

Perhaps being at an MLG or something can help stimulate a persons interest a lot but in general I tend to agree with Rogan here. I think to love something as complex as StarCraft 2 you would at least have to have tried playing the game before you can truly appreciate and understand the intricacies and nuances of high level play. He makes a very valid point about people not really giving a sh*t about sports they've never played or have no concept of how it works, however most sports are dummied down so that the average person could at least appreciate it to a certain level (e.g soccer, hockey, etc.). Rogan is a known pool-fanatic and to an outside person pool looks like a stupid game where you hit balls with a ball and a stick and try to get it in holes, sounds like a snoozefest but in Rogans case he used to go to tons of pool halls and just play so he can appreciate the sport at a high level. Ask yourselves if you could watch high level chess and not be bored.

Probably hard for any of us to really see it from Rogan's point of view. However, it should be noted that Rogan has stated many times during UFC events that he can't even watch any other sports because he finds them too boring after watching MMA. So...he might not be the best to judge what people will watch even if they don't have experience with it. I never played football, but I love watching it. My little experience playing soccer has absolutely nothing to do with my enjoyment watching premier league. I don't think it is a requirement to enjoy something.

Soccer in the USA is still barely accepted, the only way to watch it is on the extra pay channels like fox soccer or gol tv. So as for starcraft going main stream? It's possible but if the biggest game in the world can't gain ground in the USA what chance does a video game have?

it's really great that SC2 is getting coverage on this. This is a pretty popular podcast

and I agree with what Joe says

it makes sense. It's like that in all sports. It's a little different because people have personal affiliations because of hometowns and stuff but if you don't have a baseball team near you and you don't understand baseball you really won't enjoy watching it.

Unless you're trashed at a game Bring alcohol to MLG pls

I would also recommend people listen to the whole thing all the way through. These are some deep people, and they have some pretty cool stuff to say.
Never fear the darkness, Bran. The strongest trees are rooted in the dark places of the earth. Darkness will be your cloak, your shield, your mother's milk. Darkness will make you strong.

I miss the days when I was like that guy.... I was so innocent and the game seemed to have endless new things to learn. But you could tell that the guy explaining didn't really know how to explain it to the other guys as he was the only one to play it or even watch a game all the way through.

I think if SC2 is going to have a future on TV then there is going to need to be a way to explain the game to someone who has never played the game or heard much about it. Maybe an intro video like they had for each game in the CGS?

I don't think that was the point he was trying to make (it having a future on TV). I think he was arguing that it could be shown in arenas or stadiums like other sports. He was implying that in the future, we could watch games like SC2 visually taking place on a field...like holograms of an SC2 battle taking place. Pretty bad-ass to imagine honestly.

joe just needs to smoke a bowl and watch artosis get all jiggly wiggly and he will be sold.

in all seriousness they just need a better representative to explain it to them and I can see Joe being on board.

i've met joe a couple times (through BJJ) and he is personally someone who can't watch anything he doesn't do. he enjoys watching MMA because he trains, he got his job in the UFC because he was already training under Eddie Bravo and knew the sport in a way most people didn't. he's the kind of person who can't understand the 90% of people who can enjoy something they don't actually understand on a deep level like football or basketball. he has to get deep into the rabbit hole or not at all. i wouldn't use joe as an example of why you should be worried that people won't enjoy watching SC2, he's in a very small minority. i'd say i'm the same way, except i have played SC2.
