This is going to be a little confusing with iov and lov both being different teams/clans.
lov being the Korean clan. and now iov.

Vanity, or being vain does not generally have a positive connotation, so he is confused as to why an organization would name itself that.
|
Good luck I suppose, but that name...
It makes you sound very narcissistic, and not even in a cute or funny way. Who really wants to be known as a vain person?

Lol at people complaining about name xD
Good luck!
|
These are NA players? I find it really odd how many multi-org teams are picking up a bunch of under-the-radar sc2 players O_O. gl though
|
Haven't heard of those players, it would be nice if there was more information on them/any results they've had.
|
You played me at MLG whiplash T_T how could you not remember, I wanted to be friends too but I'm super duper shy.
|
I don't know who these players are but cheers on getting a team together and putting potentially good players into tournaments.
Weird name imho but then again there is a team called startale...
|
Anyone else noticed that nuMi and DRG have the same name ? xD

Haven't really heard of many of your players, but good luck with the team!

If you don't have a problem with "Evil Geniuses", why would you have a problem with "Icons of Vanity"? Really? Granted, "Evil Geniuses" does depend on an ironic use of the word "Evil", and I'm guessing "Icons of Vanity" is intended ironically. But the ironic use of the word "Evil" is fairly common in the English language, and follows the very common custom where words with very negative literal meanings are used ironically (ie. sick, bad, insane, wicked). In contrast, "Vanity" is rarely used in an ironic sense---I can't think of a single other instance of ironic usage---and doesn't really have a negative enough meaning to be in the company of words like "wicked" and the others mentioned above.

With regards to the name:
"Geniuses" obviously has a good connotation and "evil" can be used to modify that in a way where even if they are villans, it's okay to have villans in SC2.
On the other hand Vanity is not something that people want to be sarcastically associated as icons of, so I do agree that the name choice is weird.
That said always glad to see a new group on the scene! Good luck to all your players, I'll watch out for them in the open bracket at Orlando!

Evil Geniuses sounds like a name that is making fun of itself while icons of vanity sounds like a name thats taking itself too seriously. I also think the name sounds kinda funky.
But regardless, good luck! the more players getting sponsored by teams the better.

I think he means being vain and calling yourself geniuses has similar implications. Saying youre an evil genius is narcissistic as well.
Anyhow, who cares about the name. Good luck guys, hoping to see some of your names show up in tournies.
|
Gl guys. Hope you perform, but I have my doubts :O
|
Best of luck to you guys Get some team matches going against some big names, so you can gain some notoriety!
And I gotta agree with the others in this thread about the awful team name Sorry. In general, it just wouldn't be good to be an icon of vanity.

If you call yourself a genius, you are trying to make yourself look good, but everyone will think you are vain. If you call yourself vain, you are trying to make yourself look bad, and what people think of you will depend mostly on the context (like in this case, nobody knows what it means). But no matter what the context, people are unlikely to think that you are vain just because you are calling yourself vain.
That said, I don't dislike the name all that much. I take it as poking fun at the whole star system of e-sports. As in, "Here we are, ready to put ourselves forward and struggle for fame and glory. Aren't we icons of vanity." But there's no doubt the name is fairly obscure; I'm not really sure that my reading is what was intended.
Edit: clarity.

Cool, Goodluck! fighting~

Good luck with your future endeavors!

Icons of Vanity was Just4Fame before they merged with another team. Then they picked up a Counter-Strike:Source team named Icons of Vanity who are French Canadian and switched names I believe. Hence the name being "odd". I was with them for Quake Live but left a bit ago. Good team, GL! <3Silent

You and I can be friends.
In the case of Evil Geniuses, the name is meant to conjure the idea of the brilliant yet nefarious icons of 60s/70s comic book and pop culture. It's a bit tongue in cheek, they're saying they are brilliant but a bit on the evil side.
Icons of Vanity doesn't work in the same way. There's nothing good about being Vain and thus being an Icon of Vanity means that you are the ultimate example of something bad? I am picturing some sort of chapstick-laden, lip pouting guido in front of his monitor scratching nervously at his diamond earring as he waits for the game to start --not really an impressive or serious image.
A better name would have been something funnier like Expression of Vanity, it's saying hey, we're vain and awesome and it's going to show through in every game we take off your team.

I saw BigBirdY on Lobber's stream a few weeks ago, he looked good! Good luck at Orlando!
|
Awesome, never really heard of any of the players but I do love me some more eSports.
|
I love the style of iovPolskA hes such a gambler at times! good luck to this new organization gogogo esports!
|
who the heck are these players?
|
Love seeing new teams. Even with the weird name, I like the IOV before names.
Best of luck at MLG!
|
@all comments about name.
The name is about as meaningless as other teams names. Being vain can have a negative connotation, however, being a Genius albeit an Evil one is negative as well but they are still great.
|
Oops failed to notice all the other EG relation in this thread. My bads
But go IoV! Can't be killing eSports by creating more competition
|
For some reason I laughed for a while at "WhiteFlash". Hope he can live up to the name.
Team name is pretty random as well, good luck regardless!

this is fishy.

I ran a google search of the players, and turned up this:
http://www.vvv-gaming.com/forum/user/17950-polska/page__tab__topics
"Having those practise partners. I currently play for the new E-Sports team(icons of vanity), theyre good players alot high masters/GM but our actuall team management is atrocious. The main guys told me the site would be up in May 2011(iovgaming.net) but its not yet. We are also sponsored which is nice, but I'm really after clan wars and such and massively improving my play. This being my first RTS(and never even interested in BW)it was a hard transition from Card games to Real time games, but not only will I benifit from vVv because of their high level players, but personally I think they can benifit from me because I seriously do have intense strategies they can learn from."
Why did Polska undercut Icons of Vanity?
I would assume your not a profession player. To disown your team like that is not right...
Maybe 'Icons of Vanity' should be taken at face value...
Any comments from polska?

Icons of Vanity bad name, pwn noob.

How can you nickname yourselves "Kings of Gaming" before you've existed long enough to become champions of anything?

Hey, If you read what i wrote, I said being vain and calling yourself a genius has similar implications not calling yourself vain. Sorry if wasted time arguing against something else.
Either way. I know for sure, BigBirdy and Usurp will do well and i saw some amazing games from Ember as well.
