Hey wassup guys!
I'm about 800 Master now and I would say the big thing holding me back is COLD HANDS. When I just sit by my computer doing random stuff, my hands don't get very cold... but as soon as I start playing, my hands freeze which makes them clumsy and I keep misclicking and screwing up. This is super annoying and I'm not sure if it has something to do with adrenaline or whatever, but it's a big problem for me.
I even have a travel-size hairdryer which I use to warm my hands up inbetween games. It's very nice and if you don't have one of these, I recommend you get one cuz it's super effective and gets your hands warm and nice. But the effects don't last for a 45 minute game, unfortunately. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/rhNm6.jpg)
Does anyone else have this problem? Why do you think this happens, and how do YOU keep your hands warm?
I have the same problem. Considered getting myself some hobo-gloves with holes for the fingertips. I usually just put on a sweater though.
I have a warm drink nearby (Tea, Coffe, Even hot chocolate would work) and if my hands get too cool, I grab the cup/mug to warm them up again.
Just make sure not to do this while microing/macroing heavily. Moving your hands around a lot too will help, try using hotkeys faster, and spam if you feel your hands are getting cold.
Sometimes when I play I get sweaty palms. If the room is not very cold my hands don't get very cold. Probably cause I spam really hard at the beginning of the game ( you get used to spamming when you live in a 50 degrees F dorm room!!)
Must be the nerves. I have this problem sometimes too, but its more so me feeling cold all over rather than just my hands. A heater fixes it nicely tho
I was thinking it would be cool to output hot air from your PC and blow it over your keyboard... Not sure how practical it would be.
I usually wash my hands with hot water when I'm up, and keep the room pretty warm, but I too get very cold hands from playing.
Same problem here.
I used to play WoW arena with a friend over skype, and whenever we started to queue for matchmaking, we always started simultaneously getting really cold.
Could have been nerves even though we never felt particularly nervous... or simply a case of noticing the cold more while needing to concentrate?
It's especially strange since my rooms always incredibly warm from having computers and laptops on all day.
I have never heard of ones hands getting cold WHILE playing that is rather odd. Seems a little counter intuitive to what should occur biologicly. Are you sure its not that you are noticing more that your hands are cold while playing?
That aside I have had issues where my hands have kept me from performing the tasks required. A handful of practice games seems to suffice for me.
Fill a plastic bag with warm water and use it as a hotpack and warm your hands. I "suffer" from cold hands until I've played a couple of games. After that my hands are really warm.
It's the adrenaline rush that makes your hands get cold. It sucks I find that spamming hard at the start of the game and having something to warm your hands on like a hot cup or hand warmers are really really nice. Yuck =P
This could be do to stress you are feeling while playing the game. Your body will divert blood away from superficial unimportant areas, such as your hands, and have more blood flow going to your vital organs. With less blood flow your hands will be colder.
I indeed get this problem.. more so in longer games.. my hands are freezing cold but sweaty.. weird :S
Was tempted to buy some heat packs but thought it wouldn't make that much of a difference; so i just play through it now!
Woah I thought I just had freak hands, this always happens to me. I'll be fine except my hands start freezing over even when spamming 400 apm -.- Glad to see this is at least not too abnormal
I get this problem, you just got to warm up anyway you can, for me it is spamming early in the game.
My hands get cold all the time when I play... only when it starts affecting my gameplay do I stop (aka I don't really have a solution to it T.T)
when i havent eaten for like 8hours and go play some games i get cold hands, after eating its getting away~
Instead of artificial heating, I suggest taking a break.
Here are some tips to improve circulation:
Form a fist and individually move your fingers up and down. Form a fist and position your thumb on the knuckle of your index finger and slide it over your knuckles in a swiping motion.
These motions also relieve sweaty hands.
I does not happen to me if I use very warm clothes on the upper body, a warm pullover or jacket or something. The body uses the extremities to regulate core body temperature and starts to pump more blood into your arms and legs and your feet and hands get warmer.

You could try altering your hand/arm positoning related to the rest of your body/desk.
I used to have this problem a lot when I played sitting lower with my hands somewhat raised. I've since raised my chair up a fair bit so I avoid putting any extra pressure on my wrists and it's been a lot better. I have no idea if circulation is a legitimate reason or whether it's coincidence, but yeah, that really helped me.
Never happens to me, infact I have the complete opposite.
When I finish playing I often find a line of sweat where my wrist contacts my laptop below the WASD keys.
When you watch the guys in-between matches in the GSL, they use those pocket hand warmers that skiers use. You could try that.

Yeah well, that could be adrenaline. I sometimes was sweating but still had cold hands.
Funny i have the exact opposite problem, I sweat and it's a huge problem, I wonder how pros do fix wet hands; cuz then you have wet water all over your mousepad
there are usb hand-warmers/gloves, even saw a heating mouse/mousepad.
My hands doing get cold, really tired though
Yeah, it happens to me if I want to win every match possible. I usually just wait it out, sometimes make some push-ups or warm up in typeracer.
Everyone with this problem should start either running, jumping in place, doing push ups or any other intensive workout. Getting cold hands while playing imo is because you keep your hands at a higher level so blood can't circulate as well, and you get cold hands. A way to combat this is just to get the blood flowing, just jump for 5 minutes in place or something before you sit down and play and you should be fine. That's what works for me anyway.
I keep a three wick candle lit next to my keyboard when i play and warm my hands up with it between games. And it smells amazing. Also, make sure you have socks and a hoodie on. It may not seem like it would help, but it does.
Oh god, yes, my hands get absolutely FREEZING. Doesn't matter if I'm playing StarCraft or Dwarf Fortress, my hands always feel like they're about to get frostbite or something. My hands get really painful and weak when they do, too. Happens when I play guitar too.
For playing from home the most realistic and practical thing I've found is using a hot beverage and two-handing it between games or even sneaking it during quieter moments at the beginning. Over long sessions though this has drawbacks, the drink cools or the bladder kicks in.
Another method I know of more fanatic people using is fingerless (or hobo) gloves. Throwing a pair on a heater before play and then using only one glove on their keyboard hand. In this manner they can swap gloves as the cool and there's always a warm one waiting on the heater. Ingenious.
When I play StarCraft 2, my hands normally get cold only during the Winter season. I then proceed to wear 2 T-Shirts and a sweater; with maybe the heater on. Works good for me.
I had this happen to me for a while, but it was more self-inflicted. My laptop would heat up when I played SC2 and wouldn't be able to run unless I had a fan going right at it. So the fan would blow at my hand as well making me very cold.
Now with my PC, I just try to keep the temperature of the room up above 70 and if they're too cold I run them under hot water to warm em up.

It has nothing to do with RSI or hand speed affecting local metabolic rate.
As explained earlier in this thread, it is an acute stress reaction to playing starcraft which diverts blood flow away from the peripheral organs (hands and toes) and towards central organs to allow you to run or fight. However, this isn't good for a precision based game like sc2.
You should instead be aiming to heat your hands up (as you are doing) and/or attempting to reduce the pressure/stress you put on yourself with each game that you play.
Circulation tips above will work for a short term, but they will then be overridden by the stress response after a while.

Edit: The previous post... Read that For comparison, I'm leaving my post here.
For me it's usually somehow related to my nervousness level as well as the temperature of environment and the latest lottery numbers.
I have had experiences that my hands have been cold AND sweating at the same time while playing.
I think it has to do with adrenaline and a body reaction that concentrates blood to the central organs and makes sure they are warm. This is fixed by just getting more warm so that your body either doesn't recognise or doesn't feel the need to do this.
Get a long-sleeved shirt, a hoodie, a jacked or whatever with longer sleeves on top of your usual T-shirt and your hands shouldn't be as cold. If that doesn't work, try with a jacket.
And if THAT doesn't work... Quote this post and mention that my theories are total bullshit. I'm no doctor you know...
My hands used to get very cold and hard to play with when I laddered. I assumed that it was just nerves and forced myself to play non-stop for many hours in a row, don't get cold hands anymore.
Make yourself comfortable when you're playing and perhaps put on some music (helped me, and I recall there being a thread about music while laddering)
This is really strange, it's kind of the opposite for me. I normally have rather cool hands but after playing a few games of starcraft they feel really warm. They don't start sweating or anything, they just feel very warm.
Take a break after each game to calm down. Once you've played a thousand games like me, I don't get cold hands anymore. I've won and lost so many games that I honestly don't care anymore.

nah either i get warm...or get really cold hands...idk why i switch ebtween the two

Yea just put your hands in your pants for like a min and they'll be warm
It's only a problem for me at the start of the game, so just need to get that heat going.
This happens to me a lot. My hands usually get warm after about an hour of intensive playing though. When it's really bad, I use a plastic bag with hot water.
Weird, if anything, my hands might get slightly sweaty.
Yep, I love having that cold sensation. If I start feeling warm at all while playing I have to cool down. (I have a fan running in my room all year round, and I'm in northern Michigan)
This happens to me as well. And it happens to Pros, watching GSL you can see some of them using hand warmers in between games. I usually just go to the sink and run them under hot water for a few minutes.
I have the same problem and alot of friends I know have it aswell, I think it's common for people in scandinavia for some reason :D anyway, I just wash my hands in warm water for a minute or two, problem temporarily solved!

That's just because it's really cold there, it's the same reason you see them in those huge parka like jackets a lot.
i wash my hands in warm water every so often :D
First, do you live in a cold weather environment or is your room set to a cold temperature? In the winters, I have this problem, but I also have a medical condition that i believe contributed to it.. Makre sure your hands are below your heart when you are playing.. if you sit low in your chair and your hands are above your heart, its a circulation issue..

was just going to say that , i never get cold hands at home , but at lans i always do because of the very reason the above poster stated
Yeah, which is weird considering I sweat a lot, so you'd think that it wouldn't be cold but it is.
Really weird lol
After a few games they warm up, unless you play really slow, in which case they'll probably stay cold
i tought it was only me having this issue lol :D good to see that i am not alone
I don't think it's very effective to artificially warm your hands by using hot water or anything like that because it's not touching the underlying cause of your problems and you will notice your hands getting cold again after some time.
First you should try to use exercises like described on the first page to warm up your hands by improving circulation. I would also recommend to try doing some exercises that improve circulation in your whole body like push-ups or sit-ups which will also make you feel more calm from my experience. Then you should make sure there are no other parts of your body feeling cold like your feet. So make sure you are wearing something with long sleeves and long pants and/or thick socks.
Just start working out, seriously you'll never have problems with cold hands again.
You'll feel a lot better in general too

Lol I wasn't getting at you, it's just annoying on internet where someone will come along with a link that is like to wikipedia and wrong and be just be spreading nonsense

And after you stop playing you suddenly feel hot and even sweat?
That happens to me.
It's the adrenaline. You obviously get very nervous.
Your body believes it is in danger and thus more blood is pumped to your brain and vital organs, (taxing that blood on your extremities).
Just put on some more clothes when you are going to play. And grinding games also makes you more used to tense moments in the game and so less adrenaline/ less cold.
Go wash your hands in hot water and then put smth on, I do it and works fine.

The major cause for cold hands is a an iron deficiency, which may be an indirect result of the poor diet that alot of gamers have (we're lazy in everything but gaming). A well-balanced diet can fix your cold hands, but if its physiological you may need medication assistance or iron pills.
Another cause may be being too nervous, and that is easily taken care with better scouting, more gaming and just having a good opening in the beginning. If you know what to look for and what to do, you won't get that nervous.
Same problem. Similar solution, except it's doubly better than yours:
not my fingers, just my entire being
if the room is cold yes. if its too much, i put my golf gloves on, left and right. (new, for this purpose, actual golf gloves are dirty)
Actually i've been using a fan to warm my hands for a long time. Good think more people are using this method aswell.
For me, it's not so much the hand getting cold as not enough blood flow. I used to have a tall desk and short chair, so my hands were higher than my elbows (which is also ergonomically bad). My hands would get numb after a few games, even faster if the room is cold. After I got a shorter desk and height-adjustable chair, my hands didn't get numb anymore.

I always wear a hoodie. =]
Keeps my hands warm enough with the 150~ apm and super spamming early game heh
Once I slow down apm then my hands may start to feel like the are locking up. =[ sucks midgame when you can't do much about it

my hands get cold when its cold, generally thats about it.
if your hands are getting cold your more than likely not keeping yourself warm enough. being underweight can also lead to the outer limbs being more cold. try putting on socks too(retaining any and all heat will help).
get a dog and rub his belly or something. eat a hot pocket warm them hands up!
Yes, even when it's hot as hell in my room, my hands are getting cold. I don't know what causes this, but what I generally do is rub them together between my legs, gets them hot fast.

sometimes after a really long game my hands will get cold but for the most part some hand and wrist exercises clear that right up. The ones day 9 showed in his mechanics vods have been really helpful I urge everyone to do them

Yeah my hands get cold, but I rather that then sweaty so I just go with it =D.
I normally just shake em real quick in between battles and macroing to get the blood back in em.
When I was playing in a few of my CSL matches I had a 50 minute long TvP on Lost Temple and afterwards, even though the computer room we meet up in is quite warm my ahnds were absolutely freezing and I was shivering after the match lol.
The adrenaline got pumping, badly.
Mine get so cold! My girlfriend wont let me touch her after starcraft cause she knows they are cold. I dont understand...
My hands are only cold for the 1st and 2nd games of the day, it just warms itself while playing. I always wash my hands a lot because I swear so I tkae care of washing with hot water because cold water makes it like if it was the 1st game.
I just use a portable space heater when I play Starcraft 2. It's funny because I've had people walk into my room and say that it's an inferno but I'm perfectly comfortable as long as I'm playing.
What about trying to get hand warmers that the Koreans use, hope that helps.
My hands always turn to ice once I start playing 1v1 games, for some odd reason if I play custom games I'm fine.
My solution for cold hands is below. I use rapid relief creams that are for sore necks on my hands to immediately heat them up.
![[image loading]](http://www.netnutri.com/prodimg/814599002000.jpg)
I started using those hot relief creams by mistake. I sit in-front of a computer for 9 hours a day for work, so when I come home and start playing Starcraft 2 my neck starts to get really sore. One day I was putting some hot relief on my neck and shoulders and I continued to play shorty after. It was not until maybe 6-7 games I realized my hands were not cold at all. I soon realized it was because I had the hot relief cream on my hands from when I rubbed it on my neck.
Now when my hands get cold I put some hot relief on them and I'm good to go.

either you are in a cold room or It is the adrenalin that is doing that. When you are nervous or excited adrenalin kicks in and can cause the following: cold hands sweaty hands shaking limbs etc. the best ways to combat adrenalin is by burning it off by moving around a lot or do pushups etc. eating lots of bananas-2 bananas plus another one an hour b4 u play will keep u calm (idk why but it works, i can attest to first hand experience with this) massaging your middle finger knuckle on your hand LAST RESORT-beta blockers
Being a singer I deal with the adrenalin from performing frequently and these are ways that work ESPECIALLY the bananas.
I get a heating pad, put it next to my desk and in between games I have it rolled into a cylinder shape in my lap and put my hands inside. Blow dryer would get so damn annoying after a while, I couldn't do it.
Happens to me all the time, I always go wash my hands wish warm water when I get nervous or cold hands.
I am the only person I know that gets cold when playing video games, so its good to hear other people do too.
I have never found a solution to this besides sticking my hands under my shirt up against my belly for warming them up when I get chances

Being a singer I deal with the adrenalin from performing frequently and these are ways that work ESPECIALLY the bananas. Its not just adrenaline. Sitting inactive at a computer playing something like starcraft is just about the worst thing for circulation, which leads to cold hands. There's 1. adrenaline, screws with circulation 2. blood pooling in your legs (like when you're sitting on an airplane for a long time w/o moving) 3. moving around your fingers so much can constrict the vessels in your hands (they're small and relatively exposed)
Worst of all, some people (like me) have something called Raynaud's which basically means that when I start getting cold at all, or getting reduced circulation, the blood flow to fingers/toes restricts even further, in a feedback loop.
As for solutions, I haven't really found any decent ones. Some good suggestions in the thread though.
Isnt it just bad posture? At my setup at home I never get cold hands, but everything is perfect there, chair correct height, arm rests, mouse and keyboard spacing. At work, not-so-much, chair slightly too low, spacing bad and cold hands.
No...I'm always at a comfortable temperature :D:D
Rub em hands bro it's greeeeeaaaat!
My hands are normally ALWAYS cold, like litreally always (I'm a very slim person) so when I first start gaming I run the hot water in the sink and put my hands in to warm them up. Gaming itself warms them up so once I'm good to go they'll normally stay warm from constant playing.
My hands only actually ever get cold when it is the winter. Which it is right now. Guess how I solve the problem is by actually playing faster it seems to warm my hands up. Only problem with that is that it makes me more tired after the game. Its so annoying to type with cold hands, so playing StarCraft with cold hands just worse
Whenever I'm about to play in a tournament I literally have to stick my hands in front of my space heater for a good 3 minutes. I don't know how I'm going to survive at columbus.
No I don't have that problem my hands stay warm throughout the entire time I play but I do get sweaty hands. So I keep a towel near by and wash my hands every few games. Can't stand not having clean hands makes me feel more comfortable.
my problem is that they get sweaty, not that called. they keep sticking to the mouse its grose
Just was them with hot water and it goes away. Works for me anyway.
My hands are cold just when I start playing. After playing for a little, however, I get the exact opposite problem, my hands sweat really badly and i need to wash them often because I dont like my keyboard or mouse getting all grimy.
It's the adrenaline channeling the majority of your blood into your legs in case you need to run away. I actually don't get this, guess my ancestors were smart enough to never be near lions and shit.
I have the same problem, and it's not just the cold hands. Laddering makes me feel extremely anxious and because of it I'm unable to play many games (although I'd love to, the game is awesome).
Guess it's just a psychological thing that gets better by just playing a lot, but for me it's hard to play a lot because of it so it's very annoying.
My hands rarely are cold while I play, sometimes when it's cold it happens, but then I wear gloves, and all goes away. At least me, but I don't play with cold hands, I just can't play fast. That's me I don't know you guys but.

Yea my heart beats fast my hands get cold and I start raging!

yea i have this problem ive been thinking about raising my hands i think its somthing to do with cirrculation but i just try to warm them with my body after a game
I for one know that me and my family have a history of very low blood pressure. I'm not positive they're related, but I do get noticeably cold hands, generally noticing right when the game is almost ending.
I just go outside for a minute, maybe go take a hit off the pipe, and put my hands on my face till they warm up.
I can write on irc, browse the web etc without any problems but everytime I play my fingers come cold so I guess it's just nerves. I tend to have tea or smth hot nearby just like someone else pointed earlier or I just sit on my hand after every game to get them warm again.
Ugh I get this all the time when playing Starcraft, the first game of the day I can barely even right click the mouse to worker split, it's horrible. To attempt to fix it I put on a sweater, sit on my hands, or put them near the heat vent on my laptop, but they don't do a very good job of fixing the issue ):

I have no idea if circulation is a legitimate reason or whether it's coincidence, but yeah, that really helped me. Obviously, when you're not playing you almost never have your hands at the same place for 20 minutes straight. You need to have your hands / forearm on a horizontal line, otherwise the blood won't circulate properly, resulting in cold hands. You never noticed why your hands are mostly warm when they're loose when you're standing up or something and cold when you're reading in your bed facing the roof ?

This happens to me when the room is cold or I'm feeling a bit cold. Put on an extra layer of clothing, play some warm up games, and keep up the spam!
Yea, no idea why this happens, but yes.. happens to me allll the time
something similar happens to me occasionally, my hands get really clumsy and I misclick a lot, but I don't feel cold.
when that happens its adrenaline, it never lasts very long and the easiest way to get back to playing well is to calm down and tell yourself: "I can beat this scrub easily, all I need to do is to calm down and actually play."

I solve rubiks cube and play more. Both help against both cold hands and anxiety from playing.

Yup everytime I get nervous. I seem to have find that I just have to get relaxed before I start laddering (I am currently having just cold hands while playing ladder). And if I get to a losing streak my hands will get more colder and I can't do shit.

This idea works quite well. it takes some getting used to having a piece of fabric between your hand and the mouse, but as the fingertips are exposed you can still do everything with no loss of accuracy.
It warms the hands quite well actually and you fingers won't feel cold anymore.
Also, check the room temperature, which may be a bit too low. And also the problem may be that your body is just getting cold because you're being too inactive. Do a set of 5-10 pushups between games and your body temperature will increase with warm fingers as a result.

I used to have this problem as well until I moved to a warmer climate, now I haven't had cold hands in months while this used to annoy me as well. Since it is unlikely you will attempt that solution try the following:
If you get heat lamps directed at your hands you can also keep your hands warm, depending on the type you get I suppose it will be more power efficient than using a hairdryer to keep your hands warm.

Well that could be adrenaline that makes your hands cold, i think Day9 talked about that in a daily.
I get really cold whenever i play, not just hands but all over. I almost always play with multiple tops or a jacket on. I would start playing with gloves on as well but i think they'd get in the way when playing :/
I used to get really cold hands when i was younger when playing games on competitive level. it went away with age it seems, i still get nervous in some games but my hands stay warm :p
I had this problem when I lived in a cold environment. If you're keyboard is cold then your hands will transfer heat to the keyboard leaving you with stiff hands. This problem went away when I moved to California. So I would advise anyone having cold hands to make sure you turn up the heat.
Haha yeah happens to me sometimes as well
Yeah but only my mouse hand is getting cold. xD
I think most people get this problem (including myself ;p) and i think it happens because my house is cold lol, as soon as i turn the heating on am fine but if i cant turn the heating on i have a cup of tea or wash my hands in warm water.
I do pushups or pullups between every game. Gotta keep that blood moving. Helps a ton.
My hands don't get cold while playing, but it's almost winter in Australia so my hands don't stay warm for very long. I play tetris on my DS with gloves on to warm up.

When I finish playing I often find a line of sweat where my wrist contacts my laptop below the WASD keys.
I have the same problem, sweat alot when I am playing long macro game.

I'm completely opposite, I heat up a ridiculous amount and have to play with all the windows open in the room to stay at a playable temperature.

I used to have cold hands ALL the time. 24/7. Only hands though. What I started doing was actually when washing my hands, I started using hot water instead of cold water. Now you might think "but the warmth you get from washing your hands with warm water goes away after a few minutes." Well, I've had cold hands for as many years I can remember from this bad habit, yet not once after my little "change"
Also drink a lot of water for a better blood circulation, which obviously should help as well...
Hope this helps!
