Whilst I adore that this is actually do-able, it's upsetting that blizzard states clearly in their ToS regarding modification of game files. Ofcourse I understand why, they can't single-handedly check every file for non-game altering edits, however, it's sad that this is the case.
She sure is a pretty background though!

So quick question, I am dying to do this but how do I return it to default settings if I'm for example, blizzard makes an announcement that they will be banning for this in the future

just back up your entire original mpq file

Or open Support/Repair.exe. It will redownload all modified files into original.

Alot easier to just backup though, I made the mistake of not backing up one of my files when messing around with something and the repair took hours. It's even faster to just reinstall, seemingly.

I dont think this will result in any bans by blizzard because the changes is NOT FOR ANY SPECIFIC ACCOUNT but instead for ANYONE who plays sc2 on the SPECIFIC COMPUTER. Therefore it would be quite hard for blizzard to ban ACCOUNTS.
For example if someone in a webcafe modified the MPQ file, then ANYONE WHO PLAYS ON THAT COMPUTER will have the GUI changed, and this can be hundreds of different accounts. So it is unreasonable and improbable for blizzard to ban ALL the accounts that is used. Therefore I conclude that these modifications are quite safe to use, for anyone still in doubt.

So I found that a guy is using this sc2 background:

... and i want it! but the guy didn't add the mpq/dss file for it and I don't have photoshop or the necessary tools to convert an IU image for my sc2 background.

Could anyone point me to a solution or convert it for me ? I would really appreciate that!

The picture is too small, the resolution will suck after it's resized for the .dds. You got a bigger picture?

ps - to the guy who did the awesome backgrounds for each races (which had a black.white kerrigan sitting down).. why was it 110mb to download????? Everyone else's was like... 0.5mb. =/

I will if someone can link me a higher resolution picture of her. His file was 110mb because he posted the entire .MPQ file instead of the .DDS. To get it to work, just backup your old .MPQ somewhere safe and replace it with his.

SC2 > Battle.net > battle.net.mpq

Edit: can anyone tell me which size of a picture is required for the MPQ files? or is it just the bigger the better? or only depends on your own resolution (1920x1200) So I'd want a picture that big?
