Formation of a new Stracraft 2 Pro team led by Boxer is imminent.
Sources say that Intel is currently in negotiations with Boxer over personal sponsorship and formation of his own pro team. An agreement is expected to be reached soon.
According to the source, Intel will sponsor Boxer personally with $180,000 and will also invest in a new Starcraft 2 Pro Team centered on Boxer to the tune of $270,000.
Boxer's name was removed from KeSPA's official Pro Gamer list on November 3rd. It appears that Boxer has now completely severed his ties with the starcraft 1 pro scene.
Boxer has been a major part of the Korean e-Sports Scene ever since 2000 when he first started as a Starcraft pro gamer. The current pro league system where major corporations such as SKT, KT and CJ created and sponsored their own teams was started in 2004 when SKT1 recognized Boxer's name value and created the T1 professional team around him.
Boxer joined the Air Force ACE professional gaming team on 2006 as a part of his mandatory military service. When he returned to his team upon discharge, he could not perform to the standards and was often left out of the team's roster entry.
Recently, Boxer has transformed himself into a Starcraft II professional gamer and successfully reached the semifinals of GSL season 2, perhaps signaling the second return to his prime.
Some Korean Netizen Reactions The only professional gamer above 30 who can support himself and more purely from gaming!
I knew it would be "Im"-Tel!
Once again, it's gonna be the Age of Boxer hahaha
SCII's reach now includes international sponsors! I bet KeSPA's asses are burning now lolol
I thought it was gonna be Intel... Anyway now KeSPA's fate is sealed...
Now company "A" has to sponsor Yellow... (T/N: Referring to AMD)
but so far in SC2 he defnitely isn't what most people make him out to be.
( bad macro, godly micro, innovative )
His macro seems absolutely on par with the majority of the players. His micro does not seem anything extraordinary He is not innovative in any way (not that you NEED to be, idra for ex)
If anything
players like Foxer, TLO, Fruitdealer seem to be on top of the innovation and micro section.
BoxeR to me seems like simply a great all round player. I thnk people tend to label him too much and can't just admire him for what he currently is.
Wow, this is huge! Curious as to who will become head coach and potential players joining the team. Please pick a team name that does not have to do with weird acronyms as well.
Nice to see Intel doing this. I am super excited to see who Boxer brings onto his team. I am sure whoever he chooses will become very successful in SC2. Boxer isn't the type of player to just choose anyone for his team.
Intel to sponsor him? That's pretty damn impressive. I can't wait to see who he brings together to form his team, though. That's the most exciting part of this announcement, imo.

I don't give that a shit.
As far as I am concerned, Boxer can just banshee rush his way to the trophy x4 and I will still call him an Emperor and bow to his name.
What you underestimate is that Boxer's appeal is able to reach to those who are not hardcore starcraft perfectionists. It's that charisma that sponsors are looking for, the ability to appeal to the masses for maximum advertising effect.
I will be very interested in the details regarding Boxer's contract. I need to know whether that $450k commitment is an annual budget or something like a three year contract.
Intel is a sick sick sponsor. But keep in mind that Intel's name power in Korea isn't the same as here in the western worlds.
He needs to get Foxer into his team. There is no way that Foxer would refuse. Iloveoov is a strong possibility as well.

Earlier on in the life of the Brood War scene, before mechanics and match-ups were boiled down to a science, he was able to abuse his superior ingenuity over that lack of robotic mechanics with sick tactics you didn't normally see.
IIRC blizzard has a good relationship with Intel through WoW, it doesn't really surprise me to see intel jumping into the SC2 scene, as it helps blizzard a ton as well.
Reemphasizing what a poster said, I will only buy Intel from now on. Their contributions to growing sc2 esports, and funding my favorite player on top of that, hooked me.

obvious troll is obvious. if you actually watch his games you would see he has awesome micro. his macro is not as good but it seems to be ramping up. and i believe he invented (or at least made popular) stacked vikings.

True that Boxer is a little overhyped right now, but I don't know why people think 'innovation' is picking some arbitrarily unused unit and using it. Slayer boxer's style in SC2 is distinctly unique actually. He may not be going crazy insane with random builds, but he has unique timings in his harass, and his viking flower is his signature in TvT at the moment.
Innovation can be a lot more subtle than someone who goes nukes and mass hellions in TvP or some shit.
I honestly rather have boxer pick a "fan favorite" team instead of just the best players. Pick up nada, fruitdealer, cellawerra, idra, TLO, julyzerg, tester, fake boxer, zergbong, and intotherainbow!!

not surprise to see the confirmation of Intel. They used to support wc3 the same way back in 2003 by creating Team Intel. i would love to see team AMD returns as well <3
Super sick! I now officially love Intel over AMD and will from here on out purchase Intel products every time I upgrade my computer. Glad I chose Intel for my current round of upgrades!
People who said Starcraft 2 doesn't support pro teams and salaries? Bullshit~ <3
Wasn't AMD the sponsor of one of the Starcraft teams way back in the old days? Then again, AMD's financial power was far more limited back then.
During that time, AMD had Athlon, which could outperform Intel's P3. It's Athlon 64 could outperform Intel's P4. I would argue that AMD was at its prime during it's sponsorship of the team.

Knowing all that should give you an idea of just how magical Boxer was in the Brood War days. You can still go back and look up his VODs if you know anything about BW. They were just so immensely fun and exciting.
Beyond that, what he's done for progaming in Korea is immense. The man isn't a legend only because of his play. He is, without any overestimation, the face of Korean esports. I think it's safe to say that without Boxer, the BW scene would have fizzled out after a while, and SC2 would have had much less interest. He helped to establish a few of the early teams and really, we just wouldn't have the huge competitive scene around the world based on this game without him.
Everyone shits rainbows for this guy and for very, very, very good reason.
Firstly, wasn't the Viking stack first used by TLO in GSL 1?
I seem to remember him using it against Hyperdub.
Then again, something as easy to do as putting Vikings on patrol was probably used by tons of different Terrans during their practice games, so we can't really credit anyone as being the "creator."

Every single person you just listed already has a team.
The foreigners aren't even good enough that Boxer would want them.
If Boxer, after a few months' practice, can make it to the Ro4 in the GSL, why would he want TLO and Idra on his team, when they've been playing since Beta and can't get past Ro32 and 16? Is he trying to recruit the new Hyuks of his team?
Plus, they don't speak Korean, so they can't even discuss strategies and tactics with him in detail. Wasn't the communication barrier the primary reason why Idra never got far in the Korean proscene in BW? Why would that change in SC2?
As for the Koreans, Cool and Tester are the founders of TSL, and two of its best players. If Fruitdealer leaves, they lose their best member and the only one who's ever done anything significant on the team. The team would have such a hard time attracting new members when other teams like oGs and Prime can offer so many better practice partners. TSL would probably disband if Cool left. Cool knows this, and would probably not ditch his friends for cash. The exception is if he convinced Boxer to take on the majority of the roster along with himself as a package deal, or at the very least, take on the people he cares most about in TSL.
Cella JUST reformed the WeRRa clan (forgot their new name) after Gundam molested its members to death. The team is on shaky ground, and if he vacated his leadership position, the clan would be in the same position as TSL. Why would new, promising players join NeoWeRRa when oGs, Prime, and Zenix can offer so much more? Therefore, Cella would also be morally obligated to stay. Plus, why would Boxer even want him? I'm looking through the GSL 1 results, and I can't find his name. Is this guy actually good? Or is he just known because of his position in WeRRa?
Almost everyone else on the list belong to Prime or oGs, the two most famous/dominant clans in existence for SC2. Boxer would need to recruit a KILLER lineup before any of them would give up their positions to join his team. Think about it, Prime and oGs can provide their players with the best SC2 practice partners in the world. Would you give that up to sit on Boxer's team, if the only good person on the team was the Emperor himself? Who would you practice with and devise new strategies with, if everyone else on the team is not A-class?
That leaves Rainbow as the last candidate. As far as I know, his team, Startale or whatever, isn't very good, given that he's the only big name from the team to make it far into either GSL. He also has past connections to Boxer. Combine that with a healthy pay raise, and I could see him making the switch to join Boxer's new team.
If Boxer is to form a dominant team that will carry on SKT1's legacy, he's going to have to do it the same way he formed the original SKT1: recruiting nobodies that have potential, and growing them into powerhouses. All the current best players already have homes, and it'll take a lot more than a percentage of ~$300,000 to get them to move.

Pretty sure anyone on any team right now would kill to be in Boxer's team. It is about to be the most legit team in SC2, with a salary already guaranteed and backed by a huge, reputable sponsor. Not to mention you'd be on the same team as fucking slayers boxer. Anyone in OGS/Prime who would refuse that is simply out of his mind. They're just clans, and as SC2 becomes more successful, in Korea there will be a shift from clans to pro teams that are in the spotlight.

Excellent move by Intel. I too look favourably at Intel's "contribution" to e-sports and will purchase Intel merchandise when upgrading my PC, which is approaching it's death bed.
I hope Boxer pick and chose a small but elite team, not only because less ppl = more dollars each, but sponsors will find an easier time to fly them around the world participating in tournaments.
would be weird but Loner wouldn't be a bad choice except communication would be lacking...only player that isn't on a team I believe that's worth mentioning

Yes he accualy said that TLO was what made him really intrested in sc2, or was his "idol" of some sort. Boxer could join TL with intel instead imo :D
As far as i remember BoxeR only said he was a fan of TLO during a ladder match and that he admired TLO's creativeness in an interview. There was no talk of 'Idol'.
Back on topic, it is a very smart move by intel. BoxeR not only has a huge korean following but his international fame is unmatched as well. Both sides will be very content with this deal.
I'm 100% serious. IdrA is probably the most well known foreign player, he's damn good, and most importantly, his current team doesn't have anyone decent besides him for him to practice with.
Loner would also work, for similar reasons.
A team with Boxer, IdrA, Loner would be enormously popular in 3 different countries.
I don't get how Intel is new to the Korean market. On top of that, Intel previously had a "pro team" in WC3. Yes, WC3 had a pro league, lasted 2 seasons, lol.

And the manager of CJ also stated that he won't be continuing his gaming career in Starcraft 2, even though there was a rumors after GSL announcement that he would be changing to Starcraft 2.
The manager however said that the new challenge will not be Starcraft 2. "It's not a decision he has made to play a different game", commenting that "He retired because he thought that he wouldn't be able to try anything else when he gets older. He'll probably start by catching up on his studying"

I Agree, though saying EG as a team is bad is a little much. A more polite way is saying "His team has nobody in korea to practice with."
Though they are trying to change that, so it may be different in a few months :D

This is actually still too good to be true, the return of the king! Now we just need to hope that there will be some good counterparts to this team (in terms of money and big old names) cause we need some rivalry and clash of legends. Besides that, get ooV on board ASAP!
I'm glad Intel actually decided to sponsor the team Boxer wishes to create along with Boxer himself. I remember back in the day Boxer decided to part ways with Tongyang Orion because they refused to provide the funds for the rest of his team, but were willing to pour tons of money into himself.

And since his passion is to work with e-sports and as far as i remember, to spread it world wide and participate in outside of Korea, foreigners would fit to this pretty well. Imo Boxer is the only one (after spunky) who actually could pick some foreigners to his team.
And there is many other sick korean sc2 players who hasn't done shit in GSL. Some of them not even qualifying to GSL S2.

Except TLO is with TeamLiquid and Idra is with EG. I know being on a team with Boxer is a lot of peoples dream, but there is such a thing a loyalty. TLO and Idra are happy with their respective teams and don't lose anything by being on them.

At the begining of sc2 we thought the best players were IdrA, TLO, Dimaga and all of those guys. Then as more and more koreans got into the game most of the foreigners just kinda faded away. As more and more Koreans start playing the game, the less foreigners we will see. I just dont see why anyone would pick a foreigner over a Korean.
Also, IdrA, TLO, HuK already have teams, i doubt they will just leave them if Boxer asks them to.
I just dont see any foreigner ever making it into the ro8 unless they get really lucky with who they play. Maybe i'm mistaken, i hope to be :D

Yes, that is true. But who knows if EG would actually "team up" with boxer's team, providing some of their players a practice house just like oGs did with TL. EG's sponsor is still Intel aswell.

Well, you are not the only one. But Idra is by far the best candidate for this, and i'm sure he would do pretty well if he could get some decent practice partners to practice with, and im sure many other foreigners would do well if they could actually practice with Korean players, not just laddering with them. But who knows, CJ entus didn't pick Idra to actually believe he would win an osl/msl more like to let the foreigners in to the scene and let them try out if they are willing to(?).
But anyway, thats how i see the whole case. I don't really care if Boxer decides to pick only Koreans to his team. I'm just happy that he can have the team.

This is dumb.
If GSL was in the US, it wouldn't be 61 koreans and 3 foreigners, it has nothing to do with skill caps yet. Sure, a lot of koreans are super good, but didn't ONLY 8 FOREIGNERS EVEN GO TO THE PRELIMS?
Someone like Tyler could probably easily qualify for GSL, but will he spend thousands to fly over to korea for a CHANCE at it? no.

Um, there have only been a few foreigners actually there to partake in it. More and more will start showing up there and more and more will make it into the GSL. SC2 is still evolving and that plays advantage to evolving gameplay. That is something "foreigners" do very well. If GSL was in America or Europe, there would still be a strong korean presence, but I think the numbers weigh in for home field advantage in another country.

You can take that to the bank.
Well, Blizzcon had a more even distribution of players and the Korean player who got eliminated was done in by influenza all-in.

rofl I doubt it.
Never know, EG is also in part sponsored by Intel. But being realistic, most likely not. Boxer will probably just recruit a bunch of nobodies and spawn many more iloveoov bonjwas to dominate the SC2 scene.
Im a little disappointed that boxer is getting paied so much. Power too him for getting that kind of sponsorship, but I feel like he is riding his fame and while he is undeniably a good player, I don't belove he is good enough to warrant being payed so disproportionately high. I mean he could sponsor a whole team with how much he is getting payed and still have enough to live.

While this is true, I think a lot of people are over-estimating how much money that is for a company like Intel. The cost/benefit is still great when you have someone as famous as Boxer wearing your name. Sponsors love people who win tournaments, but having a legend and/or celebrity is often just as good if not better. Boxer is sure to do fairly well on both fronts.
I think a lot of people undervalue fame when it comes to how much a player is worth to a sponsor.
Sure, he might not have won the GSL, but if you look at the viewership spikes for his games it is absurd to say that he isn't worth much more to Intel than he's being paid.

I see why this is unlikely but for the off chance that this big announcement that inconrol keep keeps talking about on SoTG is related we can say Polygamy told us so... (;

Kinda like when LA Galaxy bought David Beckham? Or.. when Real Madrid bought David Beckham LOL? Or when Mirko CroCop earns more in the shitty fight vs Mir than Lesnar and Velasquez together in likely the biggest title fight in the history of UFC?
You are deluded if you believe skill is the most important when it comes to sponsorship things.

Yeah, seriously. It's disappointing to hear how little business sense some people have. Some people just totally miss the point on why companies decide to sponsor things.

I understand why this happened, but just because I understand why it happened does not mean I need to agree with it. Yeah he has TONS more name recognition then anyone else, and for that reason it was probably a good idea to sponsor him from a business standpoint.
That being said, as a spectator, I would like to see more people sponsored then one person who is famous for a different game, and while he is good, he really hasn't produced anything spectacular yet. I would rather see a large number of people sponsored because odds are out of that group you will find a few who could be the next flash or Yellow for SC2.
I hope he got at least a small motivation to catch a GSL win. He can do it. Proved in SC1 he is a beast. He need a proper team and few training, little luck then GG.
Intel also sponsored the most successful paintball team in the past 10 years Dynasty.
Then there tour bus broke down for this paintball tour with a rock band type of promotion, they simply wrote a check for the remaining balance to complete the tour.
Intel is reaching out everywhere these days to reach youthful gamers, and get brand recognition.
